Obama to Address Nation's Children in School

Postby Thethunderdome » Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:42 am

http://www.examiner.com/x-9115-Houston-Single-Parenting-Examiner~y2009m9d1-Obama-in-the-classroom--President-to-address-school-students-September-8

On September 8th, Obama will be on a webcast for all the kids in public schools to watch and hear what he says. What say yee, appropriate or no?

Also, I understand this isn't the most unbaised of sources but:
http://townhall.com/columnists/MichaelMedved/2009/09/02/abusing_school_kids_with_pro-obama_propaganda

To prepare for this great event, the Department of Education orders teachers in Grades 7 to 12 to ask their students: Why does President Obama want to speak with us today? How will he inspire us? How will he challenge us? After the great event, the department suggests that teachers of younger students (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6) should instruct their students to write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These should be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.

That sounds at best like the kind of lame shit that no one takes seriously in high school, and at worst leaning toward "indoctrination."
If W had had elementary school kids watch his speech and write down what they could do to help him, would you have reacted differently?

sorry if this is a dupe, I couldn't find any other thread about this.

edit: Personally I feel a speech addressed to the children would be fine and proper, but in school I think it is inappropriate.

double edit:
links to activities & letters to principals
http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml

Triple edit:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedSchoolRemarks/

Text of speech. Nothing objectionable in it, so I say "shit that no one in high school takes seriously," and the POTUS shouldn't be addressing kids during class time.

I see no reason for him not to address the children, but the Department of Education ordering the teachers to ask those things is pretty arrogant, if nothing else.

The right just keeps reporting this kind of non-event, but alluding to some horrible plot or damnation of Obama's abilities and/or willingness to consume our children to gain power. In this case I just don't see it. What's the outrage here supposed to be about?

It's no more "indoctrination" than teaching children about Nazi Germany or the USSR.

Really. I mean, the Secretary of Education told school principals in a letter that "The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens." What a bunch of socialist bullshit.

And then he had the nerve to say, "We encourage you to use this historic moment to help your students get focused and begin the school year strong," and "In advance of this address, we would like to share the following resources: a menu of classroom activities for students in grades preK-6 and for students in grades 7-12. These are ideas developed by and for teachers to help engage students and stimulate discussion on the importance of education in their lives. We are also staging a student video contest on education. Details of the video contest will be available on our website http://www.ed.gov in the coming weeks."

Who does he think she is?

Exactly.

On the blog entry the OP linked there's all kinds of groovy info on keeping your kid out of school on the 8th. Yeah, there's a civics lesson, explaining to your second-grader why Mommy doesn't want Johnny or Jane to go to school to listen to the President. But hey, if it's that upsetting and that wrong, bombard the school board with letters and calls, get them to forbid the schools in the district to show the webcast to the kids. It's really simple.

Except Obama does not submit to these views - aside from possibly "God created humanity".

Furthermore, what's to stop any teacher from indoctrinating their class with their own views?

Would you have the Stasi keep an eye on them?

That's exactly my point.
Writing letters as to how he will challenge them and how we can help the president ISNT science, its one mans view point and politics. I wasn't aware PUBLIC SCHOOLS were used to teach what the president wanted us to hear.
