Well, I finished Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson yesterday, really good historical fiction read by the way, and The Teacher's Funeral by Richard Peck today. I have a Reading Olympics competition coming up in April and I'm trying to read as many of the books on the list as I can, so now I'm crankin' em out. :p

That's not anything like Mein Kampf, is it? I'm reading Mein Kampf.

That book makes absolutely no sense.... :(

The Emperor's New Mind, by Roger Penrose. This is heavy-duty stuff. Basically it's an argument against the possibility of artificial consciousness (I think)...but to get there he covers just about every major scientific topic of the time: Cantor's set theory, the Diagonal Process, the Continuum Hypothesis, Turing machines, the Halting Problem, the Turing Test, real numbers, complex numbers, the Mandelbrot set, Hilbert's program, the Foundational Quest, Gödel's theorem, Russell's Paradox...and that's just the first few chapters!! That's before he even gets into quantum physics, and a whole raft of other stuff. I started reading it some years ago and, not surprisingly, got bogged down! The book is practically an education in itself, but it's not (so far) too hard to follow.

I'm gonna hafta check that out. Any book that Jorge Luis Borges said is one of the best novels in literature is worth a look, by me!

A book on the history of California and the automobile from the birth of the car to Breedlove's Spirit of America land speed runs.

It's kind of awesome.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

As a student, I have the pleasure -or displeasure, depending on your view- of being engaged in multiple readings at the same time. I consider Gottfried von Strassburg's Tristan to be my main pursuit at the moment.

Also reading:
The Presidential Difference: Leadership Styles from FDR to Barack Obama - Fred Greenstein
The Strategic President: Persuasion and Opportunity in Presidential Leadership - Edwards
The Politics of the Presidency - Pika and Maltese
Presidential Leadership in Political Time: Reprise and Reappraisal -Stephen Skowronek
And, various Supreme Court cases. I believe Smith v. Allwright is next up.

One Hundred Years of Solitude,

in Spanish :'/

Me: Ma, what does imán mean?
Ma: Magnet
Me:...soo, basically a word I should already know but don't know because every time you had to say magnet to me when I was younger you'd just say it in English even though the rest of your sentence was in Spanish?
Ma: yep :D

EDIT: Also reading The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, and Memoirs of a Geisha (also in Spanish, but this one is easier)
