I prefer not to. One of the benefits of atheism is that I don't have to engage in meaningless and possibly harmful rituals.

I'm fasting as we speak. It's no big problem for me. I fast quite a lot outside of Ramadan, actually.

I have fasted for Christian holidays and with my boyfriend for his Catholic traditions (I am of the Friends Church). I think fasting goes better when you meditate on your faith and why you are fasting. It can help one come closer to themselves, God, and their faith.

What do you think of fasting?

While I do not fast, partly because it's not required of me, but mostly because my hypoglycemia makes it inadvisable. But I respect those in my family and out to do so, for whatever reason.

I tend toward the opposite idea. Getting together with good friends and family, enjoying a shared meal and good company seems closer to God in my mind than magic crackers or even no food at all.

I do it because it is kind of a fun challenge and I can give mine lunch money to charity. Don't really care about the religious aspect but I have always like the idea of fast-a-thon.

What do you think of fasting?

Considering the points of the fast (from what I remember reading) are:
[*]To put yourself into the position of someone who has no choice but to go without
[*]To use the time to meditate on the faith
[*]To work on one's self-discipline
...I'd say it's admirable. I've tried a go-totally-without fast, which is probably a very bad idea, but it showed me what some people feel like on a daily basis. And frankly, it's sickening that anyone is allowed to go through that.

Also, as I recall, groups for whom it would be inadvisable (children, pregnant/menstruating women, people with medical conditions) are not required to fast.

You shouldn't do it. It's dangerous, inconsiderate and illegal. Those limits aren't posted just to inconvenience you!
