I want my America back… and I seem to be getting it.

Postby Soviet Taoistan » Sat Aug 22, 2009 3:52 am

Seeing all these cries about how Obama is ruining the U.S., turning the country socialist, and generally changing everything for the worst… I was just kind of surprised. It hit me while watching a news clip of a woman at a town hall meeting exclaiming in tears that she was horrified at what ‘my America’ was becoming. Somehow I think her American experience has been different then mine.

I was a sophomore in high school on 9/11, when my father’s religion and my family’s ethnicity began to matter. My mom is a Catholic of Mexican descent and my father is a Sunni Muslim immigrant from Pakistan. If racial profiling is correct my family has come to the U.S. to take jobs and then blow them up. While I am agnostic myself and was as typical a teen as possible, if a bit of the goth side, things got a bit weird.

The occasional comment at school was pretty easy to ignore since I was a bit of an outcast already and my school’s large Asian population and my own group of mostly White and East Asian friends would throw a hissy-fit is anything really happened. But shit gets real when the local mosque has cameras pointing at it without any notification and getting on a plane involves unscheduled interviews. A handful of hate crimes latter and suddenly it was surreal. I could barely believe I was still in California.

In my America these thing shouldn’t happen. While I am not Muslim myself, I had been to my dad’s mosque and it was about as radical as a peanut butter sandwich. The sermons were mostly about beening kind to your neighbors and the importance of maintaining the family. Since Obama has been elected, the atmosphere in my local community has relaxed. The camera boxes were removed after the local newspaper started poking around, though this actually happened shortly before the elections. After Obama was elected, both the Pakistani side of my family and the Mexican side feel like we are no longer targets, or at least not directly targeted by the government. Heck, for the first time last month my 13 year old brother was not pulled aside for an extra check at the airport because of his name, as was done for the last 8 years.

Another funny fact, I did eventually drop out of High School. Mostly because of teenage apathy and general screwing up. However, after a couples of years of community college, I got into U.C. Berkeley and graduated magna cum laude. If it wasn’t for the wonderful safety net that is the California Community College system, I would have been completely screwed. Now I am trying to pick between Stanford and U of Chicago for grad school. So when the possibility of a heath care safety net for uninsured people is decried as an invasion of the government, I say let them in. The government has been intruding in fear creating, destructive ways for the last 8 years, give them a chance to introduce an optional system aiming to actually help some people. Full disclosure, until I accept on of my schools’ admissions offers, I am uninsured myself.

My America embraces people of all creed and colors, tries to help its citizens when they need it, and generally attempts to assist more than restrict both locally and internationally. On these criteria, I think I am getting my America back after a long freaking time of living in Bush’s America.

Sorry if that was long-winded but I just wanted to provide an alternate point of view then what I have been seeing lately.

I agree that to acceptance between people, OF the people of America is something that needs significant work. My own feelings regarding illegal aliens vary but for one simple fact. Volume. Our nation supports monetarily, physically and socially a large contigency of aliens from Mexico (and other places too.) The trouble is in the strain they put upon our social systems. Ones designed to help people just like you. Who have no healthcare. The trouble is in deciding if we should provide that care to people who willingly seek to subvert our immigration system. It is our country. We want more people, we just don't want them illegally. Legally they must help pay for the sytem that supports them through taxes and even voting. A huge volume of illegal peoples only serves to subvert the work our governments do. Thus we end up with a crumbling social network as a huge group of "shadow citizens" soak up the social network, leaving people like you and yours out on a limb, or worse, seeking illegal means yourself.

Heartless jerk, that's a new one...

Its nothing group related, the federal governments job isn't to help anyone regardless of who they are.

The role of the government is to serve as protector of its citizenry. The government serves the people. Not a handful of people. Not the super rich. And most definitely not only when times are good. All the people. All the time. Since you oppose that, it's not much of a stretch to say that you prefer a government that caters to heartless jerks. Or perhaps you want the polar opposite and have a government that does not serve, but is served by its people, ala North Korea.

Or, more likely, you want no government, but want all the amenities it has provided, living out your faux libertarian fantasies of how it's all about the "individual property rights" or something like that.

This assumes that the maintenance of law and order, the arrangment of defense, and the enforcement of property norms (which I assume would be the basis of even the most lassez-faire of governments) is not a form of help towards citizens.

I'm glad that you were specific in your second post since which aspect you found over or under-prioritized was not clear. On the issue of government assistance, I happen to disagree with you as I see heath care as similar to social security and fully within the powers and responsibilities of the federal government. That and I could use some coverage the next time I don't get any from school or work. :D

But I understand where you are coming from. I certainly would have liked the government to be less 'helpful' in the ways that they were trying to help the U.S. for the last few years.

Then why have a government? Personally, I find law enforcement, common defense, food and drug standards, education, and yes even healthcare to be very helpful.

Tell me, don't you ever find the FBI doing it's job to be the least bit helpful, or should we just let Ted Kazynski go and see who he blows up next?

Right, because what we want is an America where people feel under threat at all times and where you get to choose who gets services and who is denied them.

So, we should immediately disband the entire military, right? Because they exist to "help" people by defending the nation against foreign threats, but the government isn't supposed to help people, so...

Bring The Troops Home Now!

And then fire them.

Right?
