The Anarcho-Pacifistic Corporatocracy of Unibot
--World Factbook Entry--

Image
Official Flag of Unibot

Introduction

Unibot, the nation, was the eccentric creation of Eduard Heir. Heir, early in life was an artist and a robotics-major who emerged from Stash Kroh, an industrious, subterranean society. Although, known to be impulsive and foolish, Heir is also a genius (though an absentminded and romantic one) having engineered several impressive feats of robotics and nanotechnology that revolutionized the modern cosmetic industry. Such inventions brought him fame and fortune –- and later, political power as the president and ambassador of a corporatocracy that spawned from his corporation, Heir Industries inc., which famously combined the Arms Manufacturing and the Cosmetics industry to create a shocking megacorporation. Eduard helped to further the legal divide between his megacorporation and the nation it spawned for its employees, by naming the nation-state, "Unibot", after his envisioned 'grand invention' which has never been built or even publicly discussed.

Unibot employs between 6-10 million employees every year, exporting to countries all across the universe –- with a revenue stream that allows Heir (the Corporate Executive Officer of Heir Industries and President of Unibot) to waste astronomical amounts of currency on pointless business ventures such as glow-in-the-dark cars, and phonetic-toilets that can read the newspaper for the user. Eduard Heir represents the affairs of Unibot in the hallowed halls of the World Assembly, when he is not found gallivanting around the Applied Science Wing of Heir Industries' various laboratories. By sending Eduard Heir to the World Assembly for his "ambassadorial" position, the sneaky corporate boardroom of Heir executives have basically gotten rid of the pestering, clueless, idealistic twit from the management of the corporation.

Economy

As an affluent, high-tech industrial society in the billion-dollar class, Unibot's economy is based on the sole revenue and profit of Heir Industries. Employees of Heir industries do not have to pay an income tax to Unibot, however they must remain employed with Heir Industries in some fashion to receive a wage and benefits, and the right to live in Unibot. Unibot exports nearly all of its cosmetics, and pharmaceutical based products, and exports the entirety of its lethal or harmful weaponry and/or technology. Employees are mandated to live in the provided suburbs for employees, which are designated to individuals according to their wage and their number of dependents. Employees are also encouraged to undergo extensive cybernetic and cosmetic surgery in addition to psychoactive reconditioning therapy to increase their overall productivity, worker enthusiasm, attitude, promiscuity and aesthetics. Heir Industries is a leading global manufacturer of cosmetics, industrial robots and is contracted by various nations for defense purposes, every year, with a steady and profitable clientele from its own region. Unibot is the manufacturer of industrial robots for everything from automotive and metal fabrication to food and chemical production in addition to plastics -- and exports skin-care lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, makeup, hair dyes, sprays and gels, deodorants, baby products, bath oils and many other types of cosmetic items to the most prosperous of nations, with a solid consumer reputation. Vegetation and a small agriculture system in Unibot, provides the rest of the employees of Heir Industries with a varied nutrition which ensures that Unibot can be independent from food importation. Primary materials, such as raw metal, oil and wood, are purchased and imported generally from third world countries for Heir Industries' manufacturing sector in Unibot.

People

Nationality:
    Noun: Unibotian(s)
    Adjective: Unibotian

The populace of Unibot is entirely composed of the employees of Heir Industries, who are primarily a homogeneous community. Few citizens of Unibot do not contribute to Heir Industries, with the exception of a small contingency of children and elderly people that are dependent on an employee for their living. Children of Unibot will traditionally be employed by Heir Industries by the age of seven; however some will not contribute to the workforce till fifteen to seventeen (after their education) if they plan on being an associate of the Research and Development, or the Financial department of Heir Industries. Male laborers generally contribute to the consistent, 42% annual turnover rate of Heir Industries’ employees and Unibot’s emigrants. Reasons for leaving typically include that their workplace left them unsatisfied after twenty years with no promotion to a management position. There is a significant gender disparity among higher executives in Unibot. Only 39% of executives are female, and that disparity is even less for those of ethic minorities, who represent 21.3% of all executives. Most executives are male, above 50, and caucasian.

Standard of Living

Personal freedoms are unusually high in Unibot, as there is no formal law enforcement other than the security department of Heir Industries, additionally; there is no formal law to disobey, when one is not attending their workplace. However, various psychoactive reconditioning therapy treatments that are compulsory for employees of Heir Industries (as apart of their orientation programs) have been criticized in the media for ‘brainwashing’ or otherwise, cognitively promoting a heterosexual, monogamist, optimistic, hypergamist, obedient, pacifistic demeanor. As citizens are unlikely to deviate from these norms, the culture is extremely homogenous – however as no formal law exists, there have been instances where deviants have immigrated to Unibot to practice homosexuality or polyamorous and naturist beliefs, and/or use recreational drugs freely. Education in Unibot, is scarce and minimal, employees of Unibot receive onsite training, and pamphlets to instruct themselves on mathematics and language. ‘Home schooling’ for children from parents or formal educators is still widely popular, however lately, there has been a fair minority of parents who opted to have their children educated with an alternative educational philosophy that provides a naturalistic, spiritual and primal environment for children to learn in. Furthermore, poor environmental practices, a general lack of recreational physical activity, and a minimal employee health insurance package (which provides only 42% of employees with coverage) in Unibot, contributes to a substantially lower life expectancy than other development nations boast.

Life Expectancy:

[1] The traditional Unibotian language is a strictly oral language, thus it is likely the low written literacy statistic is a product of it's oral nature;

[2] Pacitalian Development and Advancement System (PDAS) is an alternative to the CHDI or UNHDI measurements of human and social development. This report and score is official as it has been administered by the Pacitalian government, through the Directorate of Human and Social Development and the Directorate of Foreign Affairs. It was publicized on January 24, 2011.

[3] Zasredoism is a belief system fundamentally based in love, unity, friendship, life, death, absurdism, peace and the universe’s boustrophedonical progression to equilibrium through the harmonics of Sixty-Four. Zealous believers deeply worship Lucy of the celestial and scintillating heavens, and the all-merciful Walrus, and fear the wickedness of the Taxman, and his demidevils… Mean Mister Mustard and Maxwell Elliotson, the hammer wielding adjudicator of death.

Sociopolitical Overview

Failed States Index:
    44.2 [Moderate] (2009 est.)[1]

Unibot has had a stable, democratic government for some time and it is likely to remain that way. Although impressive economic growth is counter-balanced by the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, and rapid development projects are creating immense environmental pollution. Unibot also continues to suffer from human and labor rights violations carried out directly by the state. One area in need of improvement is uneven development, due to the fact that employment in the various sectors of the economy is often divided along ethnic lines. Nonetheless, Unibot is relatively stable and prosperous and is likely to remain so in the foreseeable future.

Executive and Legislative Branch

Unibot, as a corporatocracy is democratically run with employee ownership. Employees are given a share of Heir Industries after they have been employed with them for two years. An assembly of stockholders, which includes all said employees directly elect by plurality, the board of directors. The board of directors, is a fifteen member body of elected members who jointly oversee the activities of Heir Industries -- internally, they'll appoint a Chairman of the Board, a President and/or Chief Executive Officer, vice president(s), Chief Officers, a Secretary, an assistant secretary, a treasurer and an assistant treasurer. It is the duty of the Board of Directors to:

  • Govern the corporatocracy by establishing broad legislative policies, by-laws and objectives;
  • Select, appoint, support and review the performance of the chief executive;
  • Ensure the availability of adequate financial resources;
  • Approve annual budgets;
  • Address stockholders and employees on the organization's performance.

As of June 5th 2010, the Board of Directors consists of:

    President and Chief Executive Officer:
      Eduard Heir
    Executive Vice President:
      Ulaş Dorenbos
    Senior Vice President:
      Bartholomew Stroeken
    Chairman of the Board:
      Walter Freeman

All of the following directors seek reelection in the 40th Annual Shareholders' Convention, from July 1-7.

The indicators are not designed to forecast when states may experience violence or collapse. Instead, they are meant to measure a state's vulnerability to collapse or conflict.

Parishes

Image

Unibot is divided into 17 parishes that have no administrative relevance. The parishes represent the traditional divisions made by the original landowners, merchants and discoverers from centuries ago who claimed the eastern island that is modern-day Unibot. Some parishes are named after the original land or plantation owner (Roel, Gerben, Crowley..), others are named after the King who sponsored the expedition or the initial land-claim (Aloysius, Johan, Ceres..) and others are named after the original community or settlement that existed in that area (New Werner, New Arjan.) The capital parish, Heir, was named after the founder and current president of Unibot. A 50 sq. km area of land has been set aside for the Johannes Naval Base (or Marinebasis Johannes) to comply to terms made with Knootoss government[2].

Military

Pacifism

Generally speaking, Unibotians are strictly pacifists. They are opposed to war and violence as a means of settling disputes and/or gaining advantage. Unibotian pacifism is traditionally rooted in deontological philosophies, with Unibotians viewing that every human being has the duty to respect one another's right to live and inhabit the universe. Unibot can maintain such a strong anti-militaristic view without too much opposition or exploitation by foreign forces because Heir Industries is such a leading arms manufacturer in the international market, that it supplies many of the globally militant nations in the world that Unibot would otherwise be threatened by.

For ceremonial purposes, Unibot does maintain a small ceremonial armed forces and navy. Members of the Unibotian Ceremonial armies wear a florescent and flamboyant uniform not unlike something a member of a marching band would wear in a technicolor film, and our encouraged to grow mustaches and keep their hair long -- in the case of female officers, just the latter, obviously. Sergeant is the highest rank in the Unibotian Ceremonial armies. Military history of the Unibotian Naval Army includes a naval blockade of IASEN slave-ships [1], using yellow-painted submarines. Heir Industries has recently published several corporate by-laws on the subject regarding the security of Unibot to safeguard against non-customers attempting to steal products (particularly firearms and weapon technology). Heir Industries has protected Unibot with several non-lethal security systems that is operated by the Unibot Security Team and the Unibot Defense Force (UDF), which supposedly includes directed-energy and electromagnetic technologies, laser induced plasma channels, malodorants, as well as sonic and pressured air weaponry.

Directorate of Human and Social Development and the Directorate of Foreign Affairs Report on Unibot

Pacitalian Development and Advancement System (PDAS) is an alternative to the CHDI or UNHDI measurements of human and social development. This report and score is official as it has been administered by the Pacitalian government. The final report for each country is dependent both on empirical evidence and on the advice of diplomats and consular staff from the Directorate of Foreign Affairs (DFA), who monitor the situation in each country. The DFA then forwards all its information to the Directorate of Human and Social Development (HSD), which administers the ranking system. It was released publicly on January 24, 2011. The following is a summary of the government’s 185-page report. [1]

--- Economy: 7 points ---
Unibot's unusual mono-corporate economic structure has produced what appears, on the surface, to be a decently affluent and industrialised society. However, there are significant concerns that arise from any investigation into the country's economic situation. The economy is diverse but extensively planned. It relies on employee loyalty to a single corporation, which holds title, at least indirectly, to the state's legitimacy. Furthermore, a notable incongruity exists between the government's reported per-capita GDP, which can be considered over-inflated, and its average hourly wage, which is among the lowest wages for workers in industrialised states. The level of inequality present in the country is profound. Unibot's communications network is extensive and very highly developed. The country's service sector is incredibly small — just 10 percent of the total labour force is employed there — for a country that claims to be developed. Foreign investors and corporations would benefit from the country's minimal taxation but this cannot happen without deregulation. As a result, Unibot's economy can be considered tenuous at best, and by no means strong and/or stable.

--- Education: 0 points ---
Astoundingly, the country's literacy rate is estimated to be less than 40 percent as of 2011. This is another reason it is difficult to make any reasonable assertions as to the affluence of Unibot's population. Claims to employee-citizens being brainwashed and/or conditioned can be at least partially substantiated, and legitimate education in Unibot is of poor, if not outright appalling, quality.

--- Environment: 0 points ---
Population density is high and, by extension, the country's standard of living is low. It is troubling to note in this report that less than 40 percent of the people in Unibot have access to basic sanitation and that not all people in the state have access to potable water. Environmental standards are essentially non-existent and the environment in general is subject to the whims of the country's "corporatocracy". Natural resources, regardless of their level of endangerment or their value, are considered to be the property of industry and are not protected in any way by law or regulation. Unibot is cautioned that a lack of environmental stewardship, (1), opens the door to serious natural disasters, famine and/or degradation and, (2), exacerbates socioeconomic inequality.

--- Government: 6 points ---
The state exists to serve the whim of the "board of directors" of Heir Industries, the sole proprietor in the country's economy. This is an untenable situation and provides no significant protection to the people of the state. The services provided to citizens are minimal and few are of any consequence to the public interest, and the provision of essential services like education or health care are subject to an individual's employment by Heir Industries (though this is still no guarantee to their accessibility).

--- Influence: 5 points ---
Unibot is somewhat active in international affairs but it is hampered by minimal influence in said affairs. The international perspective of Unibot is generally that it is a nation of little consequence in the overall workings of the international community. It may have the reputation of somewhat of a rogue state having been ejected from the World Assembly for non-compliance with several of the organisation's regulations. Many nations may also look at Unibot and its corporatocratic social structure as an example of a failing or failed state.

--- Liberty: 7 points ---
The assertion that Unibot is a free, liberal democratic state is a difficult one to entertain. The nation claims to have a vibrant and healthy democratic society but it is visibly hampered by the country's obvious population conditioning, low household income, lack of proper education, and appallingly non-existent civic empowerment. While there appear to be no (or at least inconsequential) restrictions on movement, conscience, association or opinion, and a predominantly pacifist attitude, it can be easily argued that such freedoms are negated by the aforementioned conditioning of the population, and that the liberties and freedoms of individual citizens are depressed in the interest of maintaining corporate legitimacy in the state. The lack of competition in the economy is also a serious detriment to the country.

--- Final score: 25 points ---
25 / 72 = F (34th percentile)
