Ostensibly a tariff scheme will incentivize domestic manufacture over import, which makes the US less reliant on vulnerable trade routes and foreign issues, while ensuring job growth internally, itself increasing taxes.

In the immediacy there's basically no arguing that tariffs will hurt consumers, though.

Tell me how the United States plans to get rare earth elements that are not found within its borders.

Sure. In the USA we have regulations that are in place for good reasons but complying with these rules increase the costs of our goods. Such regulations can be environmental, worker safety, beneficial to children because of child labor, and probably other things too.

These tariffs should at least level the playing fields between good guys following good rules and bad guys not constrained by having to follow similar rules. The tariffs will also strengthen our manufacturing sector which is a very important sector. The stronger the good guys' economies, the better the world. If the bad guys cannot outcompete us by just having lax environmental and other regulations then they will be manufacturing less under these bad regulatory models. This should reduce the harm in those countries that occurs from lack of regulations. The less bad stuff by bad guys the better the world will be.

You mean the ones being mined in the Mojave? Or are you worried about the refining, which is being done in Fort Worth, TX?

Why should we permit a strategically essential resource to be held by our enemies without making any effort to break their stranglehold?

They're actually found in Wyoming, Texas, and California. Rare earth elements are actually not rare, China just has zero issue turning their country into a massive strip mine.

What part of Wyoming, Texas, and California are you referring to for manganese, niobium, strontium, tantalum, or tin? Trace amounts aren't the same as mine-able amounts.

Pssst. Electing a politician is not science.

Testing an idea means trying to disprove it. Trump will not go for that….nor will his cult.

True I should've said experiment, I dont know I'm hearing how his economic plan will be really bad and that he is going to implement it so I would think he would try to disprove those assertions.

Fair. But it is important for things like electronics and unfortunately isn't found in large quantities (and isn't mined at all) in the United States.
