A simple fact of American society is that large swaths of towns and populations that once depended on domestic production and industry were hurt when these industries moved production to mexico, china and the like. Same with coal and green energy initiatives. Communities gutted and a memory of the pain passed on. Few argue that the overall standard of life will increase with tariffs and trump lies plenty about who will pay. But bringing these industries and jobs back state side will always resonate with sections of the populace because it hurt them and in many cases people felt left behind in the economic growth that resulted. Facts don't care about feelings but the reverse is also true. Sometimes ones pride is worth a degree of pain. Now if someone offered a road to rebuilding american industry and bringing back shuttered towns without tariffs then they would care which option was better.

Personally I would consider shifting resources from the military to a militarised federal law enforcement to be a lateral move.

Always fascinates me that many of the GOP Neocons (Bush, Cheney, Bolton, Rice, Kristol, Frum, Wolfowitz) never were in the military or just copped out and joined the national guard despite supporting the war in Vietnam.
