As of 2024, Most of us on NS are above 18, All of us above 13. Meaning we all had a childhood, some not so good ones, but we can all agree we were pretty dumb back then, and yet compared to the children of today, I have a question. Are kids getting dumber? I'd say Yes, I mean look, I have a friend who's a 7th grade teacher, and yet her children can barely read at a 1st grade level. Mind you, 12 year olds not being able to read what 6 year olds should be reading, now, not just are they dumb mentally but dumb socially. Today, at Walmart I heard an 8 year-old shout "9/11 was an inside job." why? Just why. Another thing is the dad just laughed, like no, your kid is not cute for that. If I did that at 8 years old, I would get my ass beat. So, are kids getting dumber? If so, why?

I'd say it's more the quality of education combined with more distractions for the youth. And as for being socially dumb, I see it as a side effect of being raised online. You can say just about anything online without having much backlash at all, Get banned? Just make a new account. People our age (Over 13) were raised mostly off screen, with the screen being an addition, but now the screen is the primary, with in person being the addition. If you were raised in an environment where the worst thing that can happen is a slap on the wrist, then what would be your incentive to think before you speak when 90% of other interactions are rewarded?

Yes, there is value and incentive in aged accounts to be careful, but the thing about being a kid is you have no aged accounts, and most people don't notice the value in an aged account until they have one. If you are not ban adverse, then you'll likely never get an old account. I know many people who dich and remake facebook and other accounts because they had a bad interaction with their old one. I would not doubt that some kids think they can just hit the reset button if they get in real trouble with their words or actions if they were raised by the internet.

I don't have a research paper or anything like that handy, so as a non-answer, I am going to say "Is the newer generation getting dumber?" is inconclusive.

With that said, as I have mentioned before elsewhere, I don't think that we are getting dumber with each generation; it's just that the newer generations have countless ways to record either their ingenuity or the stupidity (hey it's not all stupidity! ♥)

What a kid did in the 1600s, for example, no one knew because no one bothered to record that "Little Timmy jumped across the fence and fell into the bushes", or that record was lost to elements and time. Nowadays, voluntarily or not, someone's antics are going to be on Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok...

So again - maybe not that kids are getting dumber; their dumb antics just effortlessly went onto the internet for everyone to see.

The parents don’t do that. That is the problem. So someone needs to do something instead of just passing the responsibility to the next person. One thing is for certain — it should not be the child who has to do it. And that is the status quo created by multiple generations of stupidity and incompetence. The current youngest generations are far smarter than the ones who are ruining their futures through addiction.

Gen Alpha being dumb is the fault of algorithm control associated with authoritarianism (e.g. TikTok). Communism would not be beneficial because it would still contain social media. The problem would be that social media would become universally accessible in utopian communism. It also means people wouldn’t necessarily have to work, leading to worse addiction to social media. Destroying the “artificial” scarcity of capitalism at best fails to solve social media. It’s not the influencers, it’s the technology.

Now, back in my days (2014 lmaooooooooo), we had timers for kids in the phone, when like, 2 hours passed, the phone would auto lock with a parental control along with parents playing big brother in the kid's phones seeing what they see in youtube (back then we didn't had youtube kids luckily) and could blockade what they shouldn't see.
I propose we bring back the good ol' days.
