Delegate Simone Republic Elected in The North Pacific

MAGICALITY CITY - Simone Republic has been elected Delegate of The North Pacific in a hotly contested election which ended on May 11. He faced two strong opponents, Francois Isidore and Dreadton. After a closely-fought campaign, Simone Republic and Francois Isidore received 42 (48.84%) and 29 (33.72%) first-choice votes respectively, and advanced to the second round, while Dreadton was eliminated with 15 (17.44%) first-place votes. When Dreadon's voters' second preferences were distributed, the final tally was 50 (58.14%) votes for Simone Republic and 36 (41.86%) for Francois Isidore.

In the concurrent races, Chipoli was elected as Vice Delegate with 75 (96.15%) votes to Queroquestan's 3 (3.85%) - the latter did not campaign. Meanwhile, Marlducro successfully challenged incumbent Speaker Arawi, receiving 46 (61.33%) votes to Arawi's 24 (32.00%). Terre des Riches also campaigned for Speaker and received 5 (6.67%) votes; although they were not able to match the totals of their two more experienced opponents, many observers noted their enthusiasm. Terre des Riches has since been appointed as a deputy speaker.

Delegate Simone Republic soon published his opening address, in which he stressed bringing a fresh perspective on the affairs of government. His current cabinet is as follows, although certain positions are as of yet unfilled:

As most of you know, a few days ago I posted a draft for a Security Council Liberation of the region League of Christian Nations on the Security Council forums. This followed two updates where the North Pacific Army supported a military liberation of the region, on the grounds that it was held by a coalition of forces including The Communist Bloc, a region with which we are at war. This operation was not conceived by The North Pacific, but we agreed to jump with our friends and allies in Libcord.

As we have explained many times before, we have no antipathy towards leftism in NationStates. Our war with The Communist Bloc is in response solely to in-game actions and has nothing to do with their leftist ideology. The North Pacific does not operate based on any political ideology that exists outside of this game. Our operations are dictated by our goals and interests in gameplay, which are separate and unrelated to ideology in the real world. Despite that, The North Pacific has also long been a force for confronting fascist and extreme views that cut through the boundaries of this game, which demands strong united opposition regardless of states of war or NS ideological conflicts. That remains true, which is why I must address this incident.

At the time we became involved in the military liberation, we were not aware of the homophobic and bigoted posts on the RMB of the League of Christian Nations which have since been brought to light. Neither we nor those in Libcord were approached about the region, and no Do Not Defend request was submitted, so we had no immediate reason to suspect this was a region we would not be inclined to defend. Had I been aware of the posts, I would never have drafted a liberation of the region. The posts that came to light were several years old, but we do not believe there is enough evidence demonstrating the region has fundamentally changed or would not continue to harbor such posts if they happened again. I recognize that not everyone agrees on this point, and can make their own reasonable conclusions, but our region feels very strongly about this language and without a clear shift in culture, our people do not give them the benefit of the doubt. For this reason, I have ordered the withdrawal of the North Pacific Army from the region, and will not support any attempts to liberate it going forward, either militarily or through the World Assembly.

Freedom of speech in NationStates has its limits. I believe, as my region does, that NationStates is a game where players of all identities deserve to feel welcome and accepted, and regions that allow such hateful sentiments to run rampant have no place on this site. The North Pacific remains committed to fighting all forms of hatred, bigotry, and fascism wherever they may arise in this game. I am sorry that I muddied this stance in my remarks supporting the liberation draft and I unreservedly apologize for that error. I did not realize the extent to which the target region's leaders and members had views abhorrent to me and to The North Pacific. Although I am broadly known for advocating free speech, and as a Christian myself believe that religious beliefs alone do not warrant such a raid, I made the statement regarding free speech before I was made aware of the extent of the situation regarding LoCN, and I apologize for this mistake. I also profusely apologize for taking the extraordinary step of presenting a liberation to the Security Council without consulting anyone involved in the operation.

The nature of military gameplay is that many times there is little time to get all of the information that is needed, and even more than in other areas, decisions have to be made quickly. I have learned much since becoming Delegate of The North Pacific, and I still have much to learn. I want to thank everyone who reached out to inform me of what I was missing, and I want to thank the community at large for its vigilance and strong stance against people and views that have no place in our community, and which we must all continue to stand against.
