Azmanev Airport, Azmenabad
The vast hangars of the former Azmenev airport had stood empty for 20 years. Now, however, the former international airport was awash with workers, busy preparing for the big day. Workers stood on platforms festooning the vast space with advertising, Azmen flags and posters. Meanwhile, stalls were being set up in the cavernous space, ready to welcome thousands of visitors from across the globe. Here and there, Azmen military vehicles stood on sparkling podiums in red white and green.
Around the hangars, police and security forces were on high alert. Azmenabad was still reeling from the recent terror attacks by east rinaera, and the city would not forget the tragedy, nor would it forget those who died during it. Furthermore, with so many high tech weapons on display a security breach could prove disastrous.
However, in spite of the fear and uncertainty, this was a time to show the world a resurgent Azmeny, victorious against all odds. This was a chance for patriotism, for joy, for hope, and to show the world Azmenabad’s prestige had been unshaken. Many Azmen looked forward to it, and had booked train tickets and flights to Azmeny, eager to anticipate this patriotic spectacle. President Korolev himself was to be there, to open the expo.
And for his government too, the expo had many advantages. It would be a good starting point for negotiations, the world would be there. And above all, an opportunity to show domestic critics his solidarity and commit want to Azmeny’s security ahead of the Presidential elections, which had been postponed already due to the terror attacks of December 31. Korolev hoped to launch his campaign, knowing well the patriotic supporters of his Azmen Communist Union would be out in force. It was his time to shine.
The powerful men of the State Exports Bureau were another group which had good reason to look forward to the expo. Azmeny had over the years developed a successful, state-run weapons industry, which with international help especially from the EFU, had begun to show signs of bearing fruit. This was a great opportunity to publicise this, to reassure allies and warn foes. And of course, to make sales to interested states, and provide income for the economy to grow.
