Proposal: Lowing the voting age to 16

Postby Wutaco » Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:04 pm

Description: Lowering the Minimum Voting Age to 16

NOTICING that at 16 most people have political views and it can be frustrating to have to wait to vote until there 18.

DECIDING that the voting will be optional for people between 16 and 18 because some people at that age either cant decide or dont want to vote.

STATING that it will not allow under 18 year olds to run for parliament/congress/other but it will allow them to vote.

OBSERVING that it will allow for a greater precentage of people voting which will lead to better politicians who are more popular.

We hereby lower the voting age to 16 years of age

What do we think? Good?
You keep sending them, I'll keep knocking them down!

"NO!" The UnDelegate waves a large framed poster in the face of the delegate of Wutaco"

That is a major violation of national sovereignty and many nations do not use voting any way. Go and read the passed resolutions and learn from them!"

"More people voting leading to better governemnt? Hogwahs!" He grumbled as he headed back for his Unofficial Office.

Yes, lets definately let 16 and 17 year olds vote. It has long been a dream of my nation to render political debate on the issues obsolete and replace it with a popularity contest. It will also be a great benefit to our nation to have the write-in campaigns to elect the pop-star-of-the-month.

Oh, I can just see the highlights of the electoral process now; "I'm voting for "X" because he uses a U-Phone and he approved me as a 'friend' on his blog!!!"; "I can't vote for "Y" because he doesn't wear designer clothes."

Oh, the glories of it.

[/sarcasm]

No.

Just no.

English...speak it. Also, go insult Grovdale if you are really just that against it. Not to play devils advocate (As I am opposed to this personally.) but you act like 16-18 makes you a joint smoking hippie.

If you are opposed as you say, why start the topic for the proposal? That generally indicates support for an issue when you put that proposal before the WA for debate.

But that is the only reason, to have it debated and see if the community is willing to go along.

Who said the voting age is 18? Just because it is in (some) real world countries, doesn't mean it's exclusive on NS.

Different nations have different ages of majority. If you want, you can have 10 year olds vote in Wutaco. This is not a WA assembly issue, and I'm sure this "proposal" is illegal.

Not to mention.... not all WA members have elections in the first place.

I will only vote in favor if I can attach a bill that will also lower the legal drinking age to 16.

The idea of lowering the voting age to 16 would be best dealt with individual governments of member states, honoured ambassador to Wutaco.

Eighteen? Don't you mean seventeen? Well, it's 17 here...

The same is true for some people aged between 18 and infinity, and why are you assuming that voting is compulsory?

While in theory it is a plausible idea, it isn't an international issue. Firstly, not all nations have elections, secondly, not all nations have voluntary voting and thirdly, those of us who have progressive voting find this unhelpful. We opted for progressive voting for a reason; to introduce young citizens to the democratic process of electing government officials. Nations have their own systems for dealing with this. This is more of a domestic issue than an international.

The last time such a proposal was put before the WA it ended up in the Silly and or illegal proposal thread.

Simply put the problems with this sort of proposal are as follows: 1: not every WA member nation has a human population, and therefore 16 might be very young, or extremely old, for them. 2: Not every nation has it's inhabitants vote on anything, so therefore this is arguably a attempt to sneak a idealogical ban against dictatorships inside the back door.

Please, reconsider.

The Queendom of Gynocracy already allows voting at the age of 12 so we support this proposal.

By the way, 'lowing' is what cattle do, on a technical point.
