Pausing to prepare for the future and assess the challenges ahead

“Grey Wardens can inspire, make you better than you think you are.”

There's going to be plenty of thoughts here and I will do my best to keep them short

As of right now, I am stepping down as First Warden of The Order of the Grey Wardens. This transition has been a long time coming and one I'm ready for, decided last December when I was not only getting tired but anticipating some RL changes. I've served as First Warden for a little over a year and a half now and nearly half of my entire time on NationStates. That's a long time and a lot of energy. This change is going to be odd, ngl, but I'm ready to rest and explore. TGW itself has much to look forward to with the F/S update finally here and all the new challenges it presents, and there's no question to me my successor is set up for success heading into this new gameplay landscape to tackle this all head-on.

This last year and a half has brought plenty of things to look back on and I'm immensely proud of where things stand today. I took on this position knowing The Order needed the groundwork for F/S and two potential frontiers in The Amaranthine Isles and The Frontier which meant bringing more structure and organization than ever to an already massive military force. That included digging deep into regional development, building a standard for foreign affairs and negotiating 6 treaties, and most of all learning to balance the identity of the TGW Benevolent Thomas created with a TGW that would last years on into the future. These were no small tasks and my hair feels past grey at this point. But it also feels well worth it when seeing where the community and regions of The Order stand today, still the elite defender military it always has been with top talented officers, promising up-and-comers, and a standard of excellence that comes from within yet ready to take on something new. That work was realized by an outstanding performance at the 2022 Defender Awards, winning a stagger 12 awards in total. As Tim referenced in his own resignation, there are plenty of regions that come and go with ideas of grandeur but I'm confident that The Order is in a place now to realize the visions set almost two years ago and keep pushing up--far from the peak and still climbing.

I can't finish off as First Warden without a massive amount of thanks to everyone in The Order either, particularly to those in Warden Command and those who make our community what it is. I came to TGW in 2021 feeling like I was spinning aimlessly and in need of a place that would take a chance on me, and now I can't really imagine myself having ended up anywhere else than the home I found here. The advice and guidance and friendship from everyone has been invaluable to me as First Warden and everything that has come from this term has been from tireless work from those at all levels of The Order. I am a better player than I was in 2021 and simply much off for the better in ways I could not be more grateful for. These things are probably the core of what makes being First Warden a sustainable position, even if just for a year, for the exceptional amount it demands from you.

I may be stepping down, however, like any other past First Warden I'm not going anywhere. There are a lot of things coming up IRL for me that I'm very excited about but I also still have quite a few things on my to-do list that need to be ticked off and now hopefully I'll have more time for them. I'm excited to enjoy TGW in its first ventures for the F/S and finally see the first nation spawns pay off for what has been promised in the last year and half. Much of the work that has gone in has been to build a regional identity for The Order rather than exist solely as a military organization and, in my opinion, that's also what makes naming my successor even more fun as The Grey Wardens' first "homegrown" First Warden.

I am thrilled to announce effective immediately First Warden Sir Merlin

First Warden Merlin has been a longtime dream to Warden Commanders as someone whose NS career started and stayed in TGW compared to the many of us who moved regions prior to becoming Commanders. In many ways, having someone homegrown from start to finish hit the top of the leadership is how you know you've succeeded in building a region, and, while Merlin was undoubtedly already that as a commander, it's a milestone for us after all past First Wardens started out elsewhere

There's no doubt in Merlin's skills or leadership presence stepping into the First Warden seat after having held down the High Constable's office for 3 and a half years with a steady hand and judgment that will only serve him better going forward. Having built up experience in TGW since 2017, Merlin brings in a wise understanding of TGW's past to help guide it forward through F/S and balance the dynamics of having frontiers mixed with a highly active military. There's also hardly another commander who has been as reliable or long-lasting as Merlin's presence has been, helping to support TGW and defending at large through tough times and low activity in 2019. Merlin is a hyper-qualified military officer through and through who will continue on work building up regional infrastructure and keep TGW pushing up the peak to success as his predecessors have before. I cannot imagine a TGW that exists without Merlin and am very excited to see his term as First Warden with all the talents and unique perspective he brings to the table -- onward and upward, friends

It's been real. Best of luck to First Warden Merlin and cannot wait to see where TGW goes next!

A happy stepping back to one of the greatest players of recent years. The Order's growth in foreign affairs and personnel during your tenure, as well as the overall strengthening of defender institutions and unity, is largely due to your personal efforts as well as the strength of your leadership.

Congratulations to Sir Merlin on his ascension to the post of First Warden. GK (and her predecessor Tim as well) left exceedingly large shoes to fill, but I have little doubt you can fill them. Congratulations as well to The Order itself on having its first home recruited, trained, and grown First Warden, that is a huge landmark and a testament to the kind of work your leadership has been putting in over the past several years.

Merlin jogs through the halls of Weisshaupt Fortress, his blue robes stinking of yesterday's mead and raisins. "The gall to make someone wake up this early on may day." He uttered under his breath, fully knowing that the day was turning to dusk.

The wooden throne waited at the end of the room, prepared for Merlin to announce who would be his replacement for the role of High Constable. Merlin sat on the throne and opened another bottle of mead, watching the raisins rise to the top.

"As my first action as the new First Warden, " Merlin says as he pours the mead into a chalice. "Is to appoint Tim as my successor to the role of High Constable."
