Tamara - In a meeting between the leaders of Agausia and Estonia, President Simon Aioviḱara and President Alar Karis discussed the potential for Estonia to help the Agausian technology sector. The meeting took place at the presidential palace in Tallinn and was focused on exploring avenues of collaboration between the two nations.

President Aioviḱara began by thanking President Karis for the warm welcome and expressing his country's interest in learning from Estonia's successful tech industry. He emphasized the importance of innovation and technology in driving economic growth and development in Agausia, a nation that has struggled to recover from a major tech crash in 2014.

The 2014 crash was triggered by Russia's invasion and annexation of Ukraine, which had a profound impact on Agausia's economy. The tech industry, which had seen a period of budding growth, was hit hard, with many startups and established companies going bankrupt. The crash had a ripple effect across the small country, leading to widespread job losses and further economic hardship.

President Aioviḱara acknowledged the challenges his country has faced and expressed his desire to avoid a repeat of the 2014 crash. He saw Estonia, with its thriving tech ecosystem, as a potential partner in helping Agausia rebuild its tech industry.

President Karis welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Agausia and highlighted Estonia's experience in building a successful tech sector from scratch. He spoke about the importance of a supportive regulatory environment, investment in research and development, and a culture of innovation in driving the growth of the tech industry.

As the meeting between President Simon Aioviḱara and President Alar Karis concluded, some observers pointed out the current situation in Ukraine, where Russia's ongoing invasion has raised questions about the stability of the region. The conflict has raised concerns about the safety of foreign investments in the area and made some question why foreign companies would flock to Agausia, which is located in close proximity to the conflict zone.

Despite the uncertainty created by the conflict, both President Aioviḱara and President Karis expressed their commitment to promoting economic growth and development through technology and innovation. They emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration between nations, even in the face of difficult geopolitical challenges.

As Agausia continues its efforts to rebuild its tech industry, it will need to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape. However, with the support of its international partners and a commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship, Agausia remains optimistic about its future as a thriving tech hub.

Illiterate widow from India to be deported following Immigration ruling
Dunedin, Drongonia

The family of an Indian widower fighting for permanent residency status told media they are "frustrated" and "so angry" with the decision passed down from the Immigration and Protection Tribunal yesterday.

The 72-year-old Indian national, who is not named in the tribunal’s decision, came to Drongonia to join her daughters, both citizens, shortly after her husband died in mid-2019. She was issued successive visitor visas until her last visa expired in March 2022, and her application for another visitor visa was declined. Immigration authorities said she did not meet the length of stay requirements, and had exceeded the permitted time in Drongonia on a visitor visa.

Her daughters appealed on her behalf, on humanitarian grounds, hoping their mother could live the remaining days of her life with them and their families. She was an illiterate widow who has never travelled alone, and was fully reliant on her daughters, they said. It was important they looked after her, in keeping with their Indian cultural values of caring for their elders, the women wrote in their application, sent with many photographs attesting to what the tribunal called their “mutual companionship, care and love”.

The women also wrote that the mother and daughters went to a temple together every week, where the woman was a member. She also shared her Indian cultural values with her three grandchildren, aged 5, 12 and 16.

However, the tribunal said in its ruling that she "has failed to meet the criteria for permanent residency status, and has subsequently failed to meet the criteria for continued issuing of visitor visas." The tribunal did, however, grant the woman a six-month humanitarian visa, which the ruling stated "would give her daughters time to appeal her case in court, should they wish to do so. They may also use this time to wind up the woman's affairs on her behalf and prepare travel arrangements for a suitable flight to India." The tribunal also ruled that the woman and her daughters were eligible for a $764.90 'travel supplement' to assist with arranging independent travel to India and avoid the woman being deported, which would automatically forbid her from re-entering the country.

Her GP in Drongonia said it would be “impossible” for her to live in India alone without social support, where she was likely to have a mental breakdown and her health would deteriorate. If she were deported, she would have to live on her own. She would be particularly vulnerable to exploitation as an elderly and illiterate woman, her family said.

Labour leader Phoebe Schofield took to Peaker to advocate for the woman, calling the decision "disgusting". Similarly, Immigration Advocacy Drongonia head Kendyl Smith said in an interview with TVDG that the decision was "unjust and callous", saying she and others would assist the woman's family with a further appeal.

      Health Minister's Reform "A Nightmare,"
      Says Opposition Leader

by: am news team / mercredi avril 12 2023

      Image
      Image
      Image Image Image Image

Backlash against the government has intensified following the untimely revelation of Garnier's public healthcare
reforms aimed to "reduce spending." The widely unpopular reforms, following the continuing protests against
Dubois's nickel agreements could not come at a less inopportune time for the government's PR team.

The opposition SDP-Liberal-Greens leader Clairvaux Baudelaire has jumped on the bandwagon and has described
it as "a nightmare, simply a nightmare" on social media. No doubt the administration has not slept this past
week, as these cascading unpopular decisions have led to some experts calling it a "crisis in governance and
      sense."

The reform is set to reduce overall spending by 2% over five years and privatize certain aspects of healthcare
such as non-emergency surgeries and ambulance services, a detail met with mixed applause and jeers during the
announcement. Much of the intense scrutiny is focused on privatization, which advocates claim would alleviate
wait times and stress for nurses.

However, the Nurses Union has released a letter condemning the reform and rejects privatization outright, and
stresses the need to address plateauing wages - something the reforms "miss entirely." The letter has also
threatened strike action if these demands are not met or if the reform is fully implemented.

With the looming threat of a government crisis, some have speculated that Dubois' less loyal factions, such as
the pro-China voices, could swoop in and trigger snap elections by calling a no-confidence vote, provided they
get support from the SDP-Liberal-Green and other minor parties to reach the 60% threshold.

Pundits from both sides of the table have argued that it's not likely, however, given the Conservative's tight
leashes on party members, the intense bickering between the SDP-Liberal-Greens and far-left SBL coalition, and
far-right party Fleur de Lisieux announced it would back the Conservatives during a motion.

The Conservative Party of Saint-Lisieux has not responded to requests for comment.

MSD apologises for sending welfare recipient to brothel for job interview
Invercargill, Drongonia

'grave mistake'. Photo // File

The Ministry of Social Development have issued a formal apology to an Invercargill woman who was sent to what turned out to be an illegal brothel for a job interview.

The 23-year-old woman, whose name has not been revealed for privacy reasons, was reportedly sent for an interview at what the Ministry's staff described as a 'modelling agency', only for her to discover on arrival that the south Invercargill-based agency was a front for a brothel operating illegally. The apology also acknowledges that when the woman left the interview and informed MSD staff of the situation, with the apology backing the women's story that they "did not believe her".

The woman's unemployment benefit was subsequently cut for failure to attend the interview that she had agreed to, under the pretense that it was for a modelling agency. MSD also acknowledged in their two-page statement and apology that when the woman returned a week later to reapply for the same benefit, she was denied because of the interview incident. The Ministry called the error a 'grave mistake' in its apology.

Prostitution is illegal in Drongonia, and when approached by TVDG, Police officials said that "although this is an ongoing matter, we are able to confirm that Police have received the details of the incident from both MSD and the initial complainant, and an investigation into the company is ongoing."

TVDG reached out to the woman, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity. She told TVDG investigative reporter Ryan Bird that she saw the Ministry's actions as "totally wrong, morally speaking." She also told Bird that "although I [she] support[s] the legalisation of sex work, it should never be done under duress like this" and added that she felt "really violated by the whole experience." The woman also told TVDG that she is now "happily employed" in an unrelated industry.

The Ministry of Social Development confirmed in a statement to TVDG that the woman will be compensated for both the 'emotional distress' caused by the incident and the wrongful termination of her unemployment benefit. MSD did not reveal the amount she will be compensated, but previous cases of wrongful benefit termination have usually resulted in backpayment of the missed benefits from the date of termination until the date of payout, as well as an additional cash sum.

Neither the Minister of Social Development Joanna Barber or her office responded to TVDG's request for comment. Associate Minister Lily Holmes labelled the incident as a "terrible mistake which will not go unnoticed by the Ministry."

2050 Canada Infrastructure Report - Alaska
April 14th, 2050
02:23

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — Infrastructure Canada has released its 2050 Infrastructure Report, which categorises the infrastructure of each province, details the condition of each category, and grades it on an A-F scale (A - excellent; B - good; C - fair; D - poor; F - failing). Based on the grade each category received, Infrastructure Canada provided a list of possible solutions to help improve infrastructure within the province. The goal of the report is highlight what needs work in each province and how funds from Infrastructure Canada's 2.4 trillion dollar budget should be allocated.

Each week, CBCN will take an in-depth look at one province, show where its infrastructure excels and where it falls short and compare it to the previous report in 2045. This week's instalment will go over the infrastructure of: Alaska!

Image

AVIATION — Aviation is extremely important to Alaska's economy, which generates approximately $4.6 billion annually to the province's economy. The province is home to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Alaska's largest airport, which sees an estimated 6.1 million passengers annually. The airport is also a massive cargo hub with significant operations from domestic cargo lines such as FedEx and Cargojet, as well as international cargo lines such as DHL and UPS. ANC is among the top 5 airports globally in terms of freight tonnage. With much of the province's communities accessible only by air or water, aviation is a necessity for basic goods like fresh food, mail, and healthcare. With no intention to expand the road network, an estimated $1.8 billion is needed to correct infrastructure deficiencies in more than 200 of Alaska's airports. This category's grade remains unchanged from the 2045 report.
Image
Cargo operations at Anchorage International Airport

BRIDGES — Alaska has over 1,700 bridges, however, the majority of them are over 50 years old. While 91% of bridges in the province are in fair condition or better, the best and most economical time maintain them is before problems arise. The Alaska provincial government has plans in place to improve bridges, but a more strategic funding approach is needed in order to avoid problems as well as replace bridges that are functionally or structurally deficient. This category's grade was lowered from a C in the 2045 report to a C- in the 2050 report.

DAMS — There are 186 dams in Alaska. Of those 186 dams, 28 of them have high hazard potential, which means that if they were to fail, it would potentially result in loss of life and cause economic harm. In the last few years, the Alaska provincial government has been funding improvement projects for many of the province's dams, including 21 of the 28 high hazard potential dams. Despite the improvements, a provincial program is still needed to provide low-interest financing to dam owners to cover costs for maintenance, planning, and repairs, and should also provide financial incentives to dams that are kept up-to-date. With the province actively improving its dams, this category's grade was raised from a C in the 2045 report to a B- in the 2050 report.

ENERGY — Power generation in urban or highway-accessible areas of the province have typically been maintained in good condition. The province's transmission systems, however, are severely outdated, with many transmission lines needing maintenance, repairs, or replacement. Furthermore, in remote areas of the province, power generation facilities are in fair to poor condition, with operations and maintenance being the biggest challenge. Funding is needed to finance repairs and maintenance, as well as more training programs. This category's grade was lowered from a C- in the 2045 report to a D+ in the 2050 report.

PORTS — There are over 125 small boat harbours in Alaska that serve diverse maritime users. The condition of these harbours vary by municipality and how much they are funded at the local level, with many facility owners unable to maintain the aging infrastructure of their harbours due to a lack of local funding. The Port of Alaska in Anchorage receives a vast majority of all consumer goods entering Alaska, and has been kept well maintained in recent years. However, the lack of a deep-water port in the province's Arctic region is a barrier to providing the necessary infrastructure to develop the northern reaches of the province and its resources. This category's grade was lowered from a D+ in the 2045 report to a D in the 2050 report.
Image
The Alaska Railroad

RAIL — Alaska is unique in that it is the only province in mainland Canada that is not connected to the national rail system, mostly due to the province's mountainous terrain and environmental preservation policy. Because of this, Alaska operates some of the oldest rail infrastructure in the country, with the Alaska Railroad operating from Seward and Whittier on the southern coast to Fairbanks in the province's interior, passing through Anchorage and Denali National Park on the way. The railroad's deteriorating infrastructure is mainly due to a lack of government funding, as the railroad is independently owned and operated. This category's grade remains unchanged from the 2045 report.

ROADS — Alaska maintains over 5,800 miles of road, of which over 3,800 are paved. Along with the roads maintained by the province are roads that are maintained by cities, villages, and native corporations. Roads in Alaska have begun to deteriorate in recent years, leading to more roads in fair to poor condition. A higher gas tax and funding is needed to keep Alaska's highways maintained as well as improve them. This category's grade was lowered from a C in the 2045 report to a C- in the 2050 report.

TRANSIT — Mass transit serves nearly 75% of the population in Alaska's four largest cities. Modes of transportation include fixed-route bus service, where an all-electric fleet has recently been introduced, paratransit, vanpools, and accessible elderly/disabled transportation that are almost always reliable. Improvements to bus stops are needed in order to encourage year-round bus ridership as well as increased safety in bus stop designs. This category's grade was raised from a C+ in the 2045 report to a B in the 2050 report.

WATER — Water infrastructure includes drinking water and wastewater. Like the province's energy infrastructure, water infrastructure is typically on par in Alaska's urban areas, while services to rural communities vary from piped water to no service at all. Residents in over 25 rural communities do not have in-home piped water or access to a community watering hole, and instead must haul water. Infrastructure Canada estimates $1.5 billion dollars is needed to fund drinking water infrastructure. The same issues arise for Alaska's wastewater, where residents in communities with no wastewater infrastructure are challenged with limited access and high cost of maintenance and operation for wastewater infrastructure. Grants, funding for preventative maintenance, training programs, and risk-based asset management is needed to improve Alaska's wastewater infrastructure. This category's grade remains unchanged from the 2045 report.

Infrastructure Canada estimates that $22.7 billion dollars in funding is needed to repair Alaska's infrastructure, while programs from the provincial government need to be put in place in order to keep its infrastructure well-maintained. Next week CBCN will recap the infrastructure report for Alberta.

APRIL COLD SNAP SURPRISES RAZENLAND
Friday 14th April 2023

Gorinsk - A cold snap across the nation of Razenland has taken by surprise the nine-million-strong population, after a recent spell of warm weather. Although Razenland is no stranger to cold winters, March is usually the last of the cold months, and a gentle increase in the temperature across the country was beginning to see the snow melt in the foothills of the mountainous South Region. Equally, in the Far North Region, the snow, ice and frost seemingly ever-present on the ground was thawing nicely, and the bulldozers and snowploughs which work throughout the winter months were being withdrawn for summertime maintenance, ahead of a projected return to their wintertime duties by October.

The plummeting temperatures have brought snow and ice back in plentiful supply, stranding trucks on the roads and even causing a small amount of disruption to the railways, necessitating the reactivation of snowplough-fitted locomotives on clearance detail.

Razenland’s ports are always susceptible to icy conditions, and the return of snow and ice puts on hold the prospect of the typical springtime surge in maritime trade.

The mineral-rich industrial belt will suffer for the enforced longer winter, as will the agricultural zone in the Central and South Regions, as experts predict a poor harvest this year.

Director of the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture, Yuliana Trubila, encouraged farmers not to be put off by a “quick flurry” of snow, saying they would be credited with Razenland’s prosperity in the coming months.

BREAKING NEWS:
TWO DEAD, TWENTY ARRESTED IN COUP D'ETAT ATTEMPT

15th April 2023
ImageImageImageImage

BREAKING NEWS
Two people have been killed after members of a far right militia group attempted to storm the headquarters of the Tangatarehua Self-Defence Force in an apparent coup d'etat attempt.

Image
Flames can be seen coming from the TSDF headquarters in Kotahiteitei, Tamaki following a failed coup attempt.

Members of Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau, a far right neo-fascist militia infiltrated the TSDF barracks in the Kotahiteitei district of Tamaki this morning, where the commanding officer was taken hostage and reportedly killed.

Twenty members of the underground group, which was founded by popular author Piripi Kei Tiki, were arrested by the Rōpū Tiaki Motuhake [Police Special Tactical Unit] , while Kei Tiki himself died at the scene after choosing to commit the ritual suicide act of Kawa Whakamomori.

The group, who publicly describe themselves as an 'anti-communist, pro-monarchist' paramilitary 'dedicated to the protection of the Empress and traditional Rehuan values' was originally founded as a club for right-wing university students to counter-balance the alleged dominance of 'leftist' groups on campus but over the last few years reportedly grew into an underground militia, with several members joining the TSDF as part of a plot to infiltrate the upper echelons of the military.

Today's events raises concerns about the effectiveness of Tangatarehua's intelligence community, with the Office of Unconstitutional Activities releasing a statement that they were 'completely unaware of the existence of this group or any national security threat posed by it.'

Reports suggest that the group originally sought to infiltrate the Imperial Guards (an elite military branch commanded directly by Her Sacred Majesty the Empress) but that the group's members consistently failed the physical and mental aptitude tests required to join.

WHAT WERE THE GROUP'S AIMS?

At 7am local time, prominent author and public intellectual Piripi Kei Tiki posted a 'manifesto' on his website, as well as on various social media platforms, explaining who Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau were and what they planned to achieve.

In his 75 page treatise, the full contents of which cannot legally be produced here, Kei Tiki decried the 'wanton materialism and loss of spirituality' of modern Tangatarehua and called for a 'radical de-westernisation' of the nation and its political system.

The manifesto demanded the immediate cancellation of the 'western-imposed' 1979 constitution and called for Tangatarehua to immediately re-militarise including a demand that Tangatarehua should develop nuclear weapons.

Kei Tiki also called the the resignation of the Rangatira and suggested that he himself should be installed as Rangatira, citing his noble ancestry as well as historical precedents in which previous Rangatiras have been replaced by the Empress for undermining traditional values. Specifically he compared himself with Te Rata Whakahoki, who in 1891 replaced Te Ahunga Whananga as Rangatira and went on to lead a violent suppression of Christianity.

The manifesto claimed that "two generations of Rehuans have been brainwashed by western values. The result is that they have no souls - their spirits have been replaced with the western obsession with money and materialism."

He called for the restoration of the nation's Mana [pride/spirit] and stated that Parliament should be dissolved on the grounds that 'democracy is incompatible with the values of the nation. It is an attempt to shackle us to the backward, government-by-peasantry values of the west which promote only ignorance and spiritual emptiness'.

In his speech to the TSDF during the siege of the barracks he stated his belief that "A 2000 year old warrior culture cannot be destroyed at the whim of a few fat, ignorant westerners!"

WHO WAS PIRIPI KEI TIKI?

Piripi Kei Tiki was born on December 12 1958 into a Toa [noble warrior] family in Kaitohura, although he lived most of his life in Rakipa. In 1976, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Imperial Tangatarehua Army and fought during the tail end of the South Pacific War.
Image
Piripi Kei Tiki was, until today, considered
one of Tangatarehua's greatest literary figures.

After the war ended he became a prominent academic and was often associated with the postmodernist intellectual movement. He also began a successful career as a novelist, writing mostly in the genre of science fiction.

Kei Tiki is widely regarded as Tangatarehua's finest author, with several of his books not only international bestsellers but the recipient of major awards. In 2003, he was even shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Among his most famous works include the sci fi novels "Obsku" and "Do Robots Think About Mechanical Goats?" and the semi-autobiographical "A Photocopier Lightly".

Several of his works have also become popular films, such as "Blade Walker", "The Majority Report" and "Partial Recall".

His novels often question the nature of reality and the reliability of memory - a theme that, in light of recent events, might shine some light on his historical revisionist views.

Indeed, signs of his growing political extremism can be seen in some of his later novels. The novel "Cease your laughter, the soldier told me" depicts a future in which Tangatarehua has fallen into anarchy, after totally embracing western values, democracy and pacifism. In the novel Tangatarehua is overrun by immigrants, who silently colonise the nation, crime gangs run by Taurekareka effectively rule the nation which is itself hyper-capitalist.

Even more telling of his views is his popular debut novel, "The Woman in the Low Palace" - about an alternative reality in which Tangatarehua won the South Pacific War and went on to colonise must of southeastern Greater Dienstad. One of the curious themes of the novel, which seems to have gone unnoticed until today, is the idea that the media shapes perception which shapes reality and Kei Tiki seems to suggest in the book that the west needn't have defeated Tangatarehua in battle - all it had to do was convince the people that they had lost via propaganda.

This view, though at the time assumed to have been used fictitiously, is a common conspiracy theory among Tangatarehua's far right: The idea that Tangatarehua actually won the war, but that the Empress Awhinatia te hunga rawakore was an agent of the west and used her influence, along with that of the media, to bring Tangatarehua under the control of the global capitalist elite.

Piripi Kei Tiki has also been known to have a history of mental illness, with one of the mother's of his children claiming that he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Indeed many people who knew him have suggested that today's events were his idea of performance art, or him attempting to fabricate a justification for his desire to commit suicide in a public place.

For all his recent decrying of western values, Kei Tiki was known to be "very fond of western culture and advances" - for example he lived in an American-style house in a gated community in Rakipa, drank Scotch whiskey and read French and English literature.

His daughter, Aroha Kei Tiki, released a comment to media stating that she doubted her father genuinely held the far right views that he claimed in his manifesto.

"I don't doubt the sincerity of his co-conspirators," she said, "but I don't think that Father genuinely believed in what he was saying. I think for him this was another work of fiction that he simply lost himself to, he always struggled to know what is real and what isn't and this time he simply never returned to reality."

COUP TIMED FOR SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARY

The manifesto revealed that planning for the coup attempt began as early as 2016 but was specifically timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the day that Te Huinga Rangatiratanga o Tangatarehua [the Tangatarehua Imperial Rule Association] seized power.
Image
The coup attempt has coincided with the 80th anniversary
of the Tangatarehua Imperial Rule Association seizing power

On April 15th 1943, exactly 80 years ago, officers of the Imperial Tangatarehua Armed Forces stormed Te Whare o Tangata [Parliament] where they arrested and outlawed all opposition parties and politicians, marking the beginning of a fascist military junta that would last until 1979.

Despite previous assurances from the Tiakitanga [Police] that would be on alert for any violent far right demonstrations today in light of the anniversary, today's coup attempt went off relatively unnoticed until a fire at the TSDF headquarters alerted passers by, who called the fire brigade to investigate.

The relative inaction of the police and the Office of Unconstitutional Activities has sparked fear and speculation that Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau may have been more successful at infiltrating their way into the upper echelons of Tangatarehua's government agencies than previously assumed.

Despite this, it appears that the coup was an abject failure, with Piripi Kei Tiki ending his occupation of the base by leaping off the balcony and impaling himself on a taiaha [wooden spear] in an act of ritual suicide, with his final request being that his body be eaten eaten in the act of ritual cannibalism, or kaitangata.

He reportedly begged members of the TSDF to consume his flesh before his death, saying "I lay down my life for my comrades! I ask you to consume my body into yours. That way so too will you absorb my spirit, so that the warrior spirit can be returned to the defence forces of Tangatarehua!"

One TSDF member present at the event, who asked to remain anonymous, stated that he believed it was a joke and that Piripi Kei Tiki was performing an act of theatre.

"The things he was saying were so ridiculous that most of us were laughing. We thought it was a joke, like a late April Fool's joke or something," he said. "It wasn't until he jumped off the balcony and impaled himself on the taiaha that we realised, holy shit, he was serious. Most of us just didn't know how to react. It was pretty shocking and gruesome."

However, for the family of Colonel Kahorere Tamihana, today's events will not be remembered as a joke.

Colonel Tamihana, who was the senior commanding officer on duty, was found in his office with his throat slit and several of his limbs removed, following an attempt by the perpetrators of the siege to consume him in the ancient act of kaitangata.

It is believed that the attempt to cook his body was the reason that much of the building caught fire, which in itself was the event that alerted authorities to the coup attempt.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The coup attempt was declared to be over by 2:28pm with the death of Piripi Kei Tiki. Armed police stormed the TSDF headquarters and arrested 20 members of the far right militia, most of whom immediately laid down their arms.

The Most Honourable Rangatira, Te Rata Rongomau, condemned the events of today and the murder of Colonel Kohrere Tamihana and has declared a nationwide state of emergency, expected to last for 72 hours. During this time all police in Tangatarehua will be armed (police do not regularly carry firearms in Tangatarehua) and investigations and further arrests can be expected over the next few days as members and supporters of the group are tracked down and arrested.

Those arrested are likely to face charges of High Treason, which is the only criminal offence in Tangatarehua that still carries the death penalty. There is a strong possibility that today's events could lead to the first executions in Tangatarehua since 1980, if those involved are indeed convicted of high treason.

Today's events may well be a watershed moment in the modern history of Tangatarehua, revealing a deeply entrenched generational divide and raising questions over how the nation responds.

"The fact that a prominent author and academic like Piripi Kei Tiki was harbouring these revisionist and anti-democratic views very well might make them appear legitimate in the minds of many members of the public," said Dr. Maia Taera of the University of Whakaara. "It also suggests that democracy might actually have less popular support than previously believed - with most people until now keeping their views silent. I expect that this is not the last time we will see serious attacks on our nascent democracy."

While polls show that 95% of people under 30 support democracy and that 80% support the pacifist constitution, support for democracy is only 30% among those born before 1979 and 60% of people over 30 support re-militarisation.

"There may be some legitimacy to the arguments that Piripi Kei Tiki made," said Dr. Taera. "While I for one reject the notion that they were brainwashed or that there is an international capitalist conspiracy, what we do have in Tangatarehua is a younger, highly westernised generation who take pacifism and democracy for granted coming into conflict with an older generation who believe in a more traditional, technocratic and aristocratic form of governance and who may well be nostalgic for Tangatarehua's mythical warrior past."

TIMELINE OF EVENTS:

Image
Colonel Kahorere Tamihana, who was murdered in today's coup attempt

0730: Piripi Kei Tiki posts copies of his manifesto on his website and on several social media websites.

1100: Piripi Kei Tiki arrives at the TSDF barracks in Kotahiteitei, Tamaki claiming he is meeting Colonel Kahorere Tamihana, an old friend, for lunch.

1105: Colonel Tamihana greets Kei Tiki and the two travel to his office for a cup of tea.

1115: A signal is given by Ianga Wikiriwhi, a TSDF member who is also a member of Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau, which alerts 14 other 'sleeper agents' in the TSDF to join him and Kei Tiki in the Colonel's office.

1120: The Colonel is bound and tied up, Piripi Kei Tiki reportedly apologises for the ruse and states that it is nothing personal against him.

1125: Six other members of Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau, who are waiting outside the barracks, are permitted entry and given access to the armoury. They are told to guard the perimeter and ensure that no one exits or leaves the barracks.

1130: Piripi Kei Tiki tells Colonel Tamihana to write a traditional death poem, warning him that the group intend to kill him and eat him via the traditional cannibalism ritual kaitangata.

1200: Piripi Kei Tiki leaves the office, unable emotionally to witness the murder of his old friend.

1202: Members of Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau slit the Colonel's throat. They then prepare his body for consumption by chopping off his limbs.

1230: Reports reach the Department of State that the barracks has become uncontactable. Suspicions first raised about the status of the base.

1300: In an attempt to 'cook' the Colonel's dismembered body parts, members of Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau attempt to start a fire in his office, setting alight his desk. The fire soon spreads into other rooms.

1307: A call is made to the fire brigade when a passer by in Kotahiteitei notices smoke coming from the TSDF headquarters building. Several similar calls are made over the next half an hour.

1322: The first fire engines arrive. Members of Te Raupapa o te Whakangungu Rakau open fire on the trucks in an attempt to dissuade them entering the base, causing damage to one firetruck.

1334: Reports of an active shooting event reach the Department of State. Secretary of the Interior Anahera Natana Uruwera orders the Ropu Tiaki Motuhake [Police Special Tactical Branch] into action. The Kaitiaki of Tamaki also orders local police forces into the area to keep order.

1351: The first group of police officers arrive at the barracks and surround it. Gunfire is exchanged between the Police Special Tactical Unit and members of the militia.

1400: Piripi Kei Tiki appears on the balcony overlooking the central yard dressed in the traditional uniform of a Toa. He gives a speech to assembled troops, outlining much of his manifesto and extolling him to fight back and march with him to the Rangatirapa to overthrow the government. His speech is met with laughter and ridicule.

1408: The Police Special Tactical Unit enter the barracks in an armoured personnel carrier. Several members of the militia are apprehended and arrested.

1415: Piripi Kei Tiki continues to speak, despite the growing presence of police who have by now mostly secured control of the base.

1427: Piripi Kei Tiki begs for his body to be eaten as he prepares to commit Kawa Whakamomori, an ancient suicide ritual.

1428: Piripi Kei Tiki launches himself off the balcony, impaling himself on an upright taiaha on the ground. He is declared dead one minute later.

1432: The remaining members of the militia surrender to police and are arrested.

FIRST STRETCH OF NEW RAILWAY TO OPEN FOR SPECIAL TRAIN
Saturday 15th April 2023

The presidential train is set to be the first to cover all one hundred miles of the newly-laid railway line so far constructed in Razenland. The line will ultimately connect the under-construction port town, known as Novigrad, with both capital city Gorinsk and other nations across the continent via a challenging route through the mountain passes.

Slightly more than one hundred miles of track have been laid, with one hundred miles now electrified. The new railway’s construction was begun in the old railway town of Balga, where there is an interchange with the existing railway system, ostensibly for the transshipment of rails, sleepers and ballast for the new line. The presidential train can thus travel from Gorinsk directly to the new line.

The whole concept of a new railway linking the high seas with the continent inland was started by President Volotka and colleagues on the Committee for Strategy of Ports and Railways just over a decade ago. Having started his working life training to be a driver for Razenland State Railways (RSR), Volotka worked in his native Far North Region at two medium-sized freight yards, where he shunted wagons and sometimes moved trains between the two yards, over a distance of some two miles.

Eventually he would be switched to a role in the administration and management of the local freight yards, before joining the regional management for RSR. Although a successful career seemed likely for Volotka, political issues in his home region prompted him to join the successful One Nation political party, following which he was selected to represent the party in the general election of 2010. He won his local constituency seat and became an Member of the National Assembly, whereupon he was placed into the Ministry of Transport, where he would begin to work specifically on railway projects. The Committee for Strategy of Ports and Railways followed, and he was heavily involved in long-term strategy planning, from which came the idea of Novigrad and the (Razenland) Transcontinental Railway.

Volotka presented the Committee’s plans to President Viktor Smolski in 2013, and was commended for his work. Smolski idealised increasing productivity within the domestic workforce and also liked the idea that Razenland could profit from trading goods overland instead of using its icebreaker fleet to continue to allow ships to circumnavigate the continent - and Razenland - by sea.

But when Smolski won his second term as president in 2014, he moved quickly to persuade the Supreme Council - the upper chamber of the National Assembly - to ratify a decision to give him more direct control over lawmaking, effectively making Smolski not just head of state, but head of government, too. This paved the way for reallocation of funds from healthcare, social care and education to military spending in the name of national security and defence.

This caused fissures within Smolski’s party, and a breakaway faction split off to form the Centrist Union Party, causing not only the One Nation majority to be slashed at the 2015 general election, but the creation of a new One Nation/Centrist Union coalition. In fact the CUP had the more elected representatives in the National Assembly after that election, despite being a brand new party, but President Smolski insisted One Nation hold the majority of the cabinet positions. Witold Volotka was one of the few CUP defectors to be given a cabinet role, becoming as he did Director of the Ministry of Transport.

This meant his vision could now be turned into a reality, and the wheels were set in motion for the (Razenland) Transcontinental Railway to be constructed.

Eight years on, Voltoka is the President of Razenland, and just over one hundred miles of his railway have been built. The presidential train, comprising one staff car, one kitchen car, one dining car, one lounge car and one sleeping car, will be the first non-construction-traffic train to traverse the part-built route.

According to sources, a centre-cab shunting locomotive, of the type Volotka himself used to drive, will be used to haul the train over the hundred miles of the new route. Although the journey might not be fast, this selection effectively adds one more locomotive to the otherwise small and prestigious fleet of presidential train locomotives which - unlike ordinary locomotives, many of which have a ‘white star of independence’ on their noses - will gain the honour of displaying a presidential gold star.

The train is expected to depart from Gorinsk on 17th April.

Anaportan Arms Announces New Shipyard Locations

Saturday, April 15, 2023

Anaporta, Ansarai – In a press release today, Anaportan Arms announced its intentions of opening two new shipyards in the port cities of Bespiency, Forbedst, and Enklavton, Fixturn, about an hour after the Senate passed its final bill to expand the navy, the last bill of the legislative session this morning before the election season kicks off this afternoon.

The bill, calling for 113 warships to be built over the next 10 years, is the latest in a series of laws aimed at rebuilding and expanding Ostaja’s military prowess as it secures its footing on an international stage. Vice Chancellor of Defense Aleczander van der Brand has already authorized contracts for Ostaja’s inaugural fleet of combat drones, approved by the Senate back in February. Most of the requisitioned drones are being constructed by Anaportan Arms and the manufacturing newcomer Ostaji Aerial Arms Company.

The announcement is a dramatic turnaround for Anaportan Arms, following late January’s reports of potential layoffs for the spring. The manufacturer has been an important non-agrarian employer in the states of Ansarai and Ridgeslik along the so called Eastern Industrial Belt. The expansion to west coast states, unthinkable weeks ago, will undoubtedly diversify the economy – and potentially politics – of the area in the coming months.

The receiving state governments welcomed the news of the shipyards. Governor Benson (FUP, Forbedst) welcomed the announcement, saying “We are looking forward to partnering with Anaportan Arms to ensure our nations security and to grow our economy even more.”

President Aioviḱara threatens early elections over budget stalemate
Author: Tsëzaris Ḱant́oni
Saturday, April 15, 2023

Image

Tamara - After nearly three months of negotiations and two failed votes, Agausian President Simon Aioviḱara gave the parliament a stern ultimatum. He demanded that the parliament vote and agree on a budget by the end of the month, warning that he would begin procedures to dissolve the parliament and call for early elections if they failed to do so.

The reason for the president's ultimatum is due to the ongoing disagreements between the United Alliance and the New Socialists. The two parties are part of the government coalition, which also includes the Social Democratic Party and the Farmers' and Greens' Union. However, their disagreements over several key issues have resulted in a deadlock, preventing the passage of a budget.

The current stalemate within Agausia's coalition government has reminded many of a similar unproductive parliamentary session in 2006 when the United Alliance and the New Socialists, both part of the coalition government, had disagreements that led to an impasse. Although the parliament was not dissolved at that time, the situation resulted in a lack of progress on key issues.

President Aioviḱara's warning has come as a surprise to many, as it is rare for the president to intervene in the budgetary process. However, the president has made it clear that he sees no other alternative, given the ongoing deadlock and the importance of ensuring that the country's finances are properly managed.

The prospect of early elections has sparked mixed reactions among Agausians, with some welcoming the possibility of a fresh start, while others are concerned about the potential costs and disruption to the political system.

The current deadlock has caused some embarrassment as the Opposition has managed to vote entirely in favor of two budget proposals that they have sponsored. This has highlighted the government's inability to come to a consensus on crucial issues, further complicating the political situation in Agausia.

The opposition's success in passing these proposals has also added pressure on the government to resolve the impasse and pass a budget that adequately addresses the needs of the country.

Calgary Approves Funding for New Sports and Entertainment District
April 16th, 2050
05:03

CALGARY, ALBERTA — The Calgary city council has approved funding for a new sports and entertainment district in the city's downtown. The approval is years overdue, as the Scotiabank Saddledome, the city's primary sports and entertainment venue, is among the oldest in the nation, and is severely outdated in comparison to the newer venues around the nation. The arena is the oldest in the National Hockey League, as the Calgary Flames have been playing in the building since it opened in 1983.

The new sports and entertainment district will be located just north of the Saddledome, running along Olympic Way and stretching eastwards towards the Elbow River, which currently is largely comprised of surface parking lots. Plans for the district include a new 21,000 seat sports and entertainment arena, which will be the new home of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, the Flames' minor league affiliate Calgary Wranglers, the major-junior hockey team Calgary Hitmen, and the National Lacrosse League's Calgary Roughnecks. The arena will also include on-site practice facilities for the four sports teams and retail space that will remain open when there are no events going on.

Flames.

Further additions to the district include a ten level parking garage, which will consolidate all the surface parking in the development area into one small area of the plot. High rise buildings will be constructed around the arena, which will include a 48 floor hotel, as well as mixed-use commercial and residential buildings. At ground level will be space for a wide variety of shops and restaurants, which will provide new opportunities for local businesses in the city.

Additionally, the entire district will be less than a fifteen minute walk away from VIA Rail's northern high-speed rail corridor, which runs through Calgary. The new rail service, which began construction earlier this year in January, will provide easy and cheap access to the district and the city as a whole for people travelling to the city from significant distances. For people living in the city, or the city's metro area, bus service will be improved to the district. An underground rail service has also been proposed to the city council, but has not yet been approved. If approved, the rail line will run from the new district, north through the city's core, through the city's northern suburbs that aren't serviced by the surface light rail CTrain, and will terminate at Calgary International Airport.

The district as a whole has an estimated $2.1 billion dollar price tag. Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, the owner of the Saddledome and the teams that play in it, have agreed to personally finance 65% of the cost (approx. $1.365 billion dollars), while the remaining 35% will be financed with taxpayer dollars.

Groundbreaking for the arena is expected to take place next month, with the arena having an estimated completion date of July 2053, which means the Flames only have to spend three more seasons in the old dome. The district as a whole has an estimated completion date of summer 2055.

Agausian Orthodox Churches deliver bilingual Easter services in honor of Ukraine
Author: Dimit́ri Beliḱi
Sunday, April 16, 2023

Image

Odssa - In a heartwarming gesture of solidarity and empathy, Agausian Orthodox churches across the country delivered Easter services in both the Agausian and Ukrainian language. This move was made in honor of the Ukrainian soldiers who died in the Russian invasion and as a tribute to the large number of Ukrainians who fled to Agausia in the wake of the war.

The decision was taken after consultations with the leaders of the Ukrainian community in Agausia. The Ukrainian language is widely spoken in Agausia, and the move was seen as a way to acknowledge and honor the sacrifices made by the Ukrainian people.

The churches were adorned with colorful Easter decorations and were filled with worshippers, both Agausians and Ukrainians. The services were conducted in both languages, with hymns sung in both languages. The congregants were visibly moved by the gesture of unity and support, with many expressing their appreciation for the effort made by the churches.

The conflict in Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014, with thousands of lives lost and many more displaced from their homes. The Agausian government has been supportive of the Ukrainian people, offering aid and asylum to those who fled the conflict.

However, Russian Orthodox churches in Agausia did not follow the same approach. In addition, some religious leaders in Russia criticized the move made by the Agausian Orthodox Church, seeing it as an act of political provocation.

They argued that the Church should remain neutral in political conflicts and focus on its religious mission. Nonetheless, the gesture made by the Agausian Orthodox Church was widely appreciated by those who saw it as a symbol of solidarity and hope.

(27th RAMADHAN 1444•MONDAY)

"Selamat Tinggal Ramadhan" was held for the first time in Sarawak Darulhana

Ostaji Election Season Kicks Off, Sovereignty Party Faces Leadership Shake-Up

Monday, April 17, 2023

Election season has come to Ostaja, with campaigns officially launching just two days ago. The two governing parties, the Federal Union Party (FUP) and the Sovereignty Party (Sov) each held their party conventions today to vote on party platforms ahead of the June 1st contest.

Over the weekend, Aleczander van der Brand, Vice Chancellor of Defense and the current leader of the Sovereignty Party, has announced his intention to run for reelection to the Senate, but not for party leader. Rumors of this announcement have been running rampant in Osto ever since the VC was the only Sov vote in favor of Chancellor Ryan’s failed Rural Weatherization Act (RWA) last week. Many aides and party members have been quietly concerned that van der Brand has not pushed hard enough for more conservative principles in his role as coalition partner. Van der Brand defended his vote citing his Vice Chancellorship and the national security risks related to an under-developed border region.

His abdication allowed Ashlyn Tyler, current Vice Chancellor of the Treasury, to easily win the leadership contest to replace van der Brand as party leader at the Sovereignty Party Convention on Monday. She has gained popularity in the party following her success in rallying the Sovereignty Party against the RWA, citing excessive taxes. The Sov Party platform for the election cycle, as a result, focuses on lower taxes, but also includes plans to continue expanding the Ostaji military and supporting free trade. Tyler also indicated that sharing the victories related to trade and defense her party championed in the coalition this year would play a central role in campaigning.

The FUP, which also held their party convention on Monday, updated their party platform as well. While it contains many similar provisions as the Sov platform – trade expansion and defense the largest intersection– it also cites plans to strengthen union power, improve infrastructure, and protecting social spending legislated under the Farm and Fish bill. Most provisions from Chancellor Ryan’s RWA appeared in the platform, although the act was not mentioned by name.

The opposition parties – the Greens, the Ostaji People’s Party (OPP), and the Ridge Movement’s Political Wing (Ridge) – all plan to hold similar conventions later this week.

Council by-laws to become more potent, govt proposes

A Bill will be put before Parliament tomorrow allowing City and District Councils the authority to create tougher by-laws.

The Council Bylaw Amendment Bill 2023 proposes that local government authorities be given the power to create and enforce by-laws regarding offences which include community service, home detention and involuntary rehabilitation as potential punishments. Currently, by-laws passed by local councils are only permitted to list financial penalties under $10,000 as their maximum punishment. The only exception to this stipulation is that laws regarding dogs include the ability to sentence offenders to a ban on pet ownership within the local council area.

Common by-laws include smoking or alcohol bans in public places, parking enforcement, anti-littering enforcement and dog registration. Currently, Nelson City Council has the most by-laws on its books, with 103. The harshest by-law to exist nationwide is a 'nationally understood by-law', which forbids members of the public entering train yards or entering train tracks outside of the designated crossing areas. The penalty for this is a fine of $10,000, the maximum allowed under current law. The by-law has been enacted by 82% of all local governments in Drongonia, with those on English Island being notable exceptions.

Local Government Minister, Donald Wood, told TVDG via a phone interview that he believes the Bill to be "a fantastic idea which will help locals shape their communities in a more meaningful way" and that he is "very optimistic it will pass through Parliament with cross-party support." Local Government Drongonia President Mike Cadwallader posted via his Peaker feed that he was "very enthusiastic" about the Bill, and that "the support among LGDG [Local Government Drongonia] members is near-unanimous."

Under the proposed Bill, Police would still be in charge of enforcement of offences, with exceptions for noise, dog, and parking-related offences. For example, Police who catch someone littering will still have to issue a fine on behalf of the local council, with the fine's proceeds being split 80-20 between the council and Police. This payment structure has remained unchanged since the 1980s, when by-laws were first introduced under the Labour Nolan Government. In the case of offences handled by Noise Control, Dog Control or the council-owned Transport Entity, the officer assigned has the authority to issue fines payable to the council.

Labour leader Phoebe Schofield posted on Peaker that she is "hopeful that with some tweaks, the Bill can come to pass."

Breaking: Labour Unions Votes For Joint
      Strike, 300,000 Workers Involved

by: am news team / mardi avril 18 2023

Following the recent announcements to cut public healthcare spending and the Nickel agreement protests boiling
over into civil unrest, tens of thousands of the nation's employees who work in the medical field and nickel
mining industry have voted overwhelmingly to walk off the job in protest.

The vote for a strike mandate passed with ease and over a record of two days, and the deadline for a deal with
the government passed yesterday evening after negotiations between the regional administrators council,
representatives from Electron, and union leaders and indigenous chiefs collapsed.

The Fédération des Médecins (FM), the national union representing medical professionals, has voted for strike
action in conjunction with the Fédération Nationale des Mineurs (FNM) in response to last week's controversial
      Nickel Mine agreements.

The two labour unions represent almost 300,000 workers, which means that an unprecedented 6% of all Saint-
Lisieuxians are participating in the strike. Already, the federal police agency, the ANP, has heightened its stay-at-
home advisory into a stay-at-home order, ordering millions in the capital city of Thérèse to avoid public places.

The response from the opposition has been swift, with the Social Democrat coalition and the far-left SBL parties
now openly working towards a no-confidence vote despite their many grievances. Even the far-right FDL party
has shown willingness on social media "to cooperate if civil unrest continues."

"I support the protestors fully," said Jean-Luc, a passerby who was ordered to stay at home by police near
am.news headquarters, "although the looting and civil disorder I cannot accept. Is the government willing to
put its foot down and call in the army? Or reason and détente? I do not know."

Another passerby on a bicycle interrupted the interview: "This government has not shown any willingness to
cooperate or see sense, so it is only just to remove them from power!"

Minister of Internal Security, Catherine Delacroix, had this to say in this morning's press meeting: "There will
be negotiations with civilized people who are voicing their displeasure at the government's recent actions, not
      thugs and cross burners."

We'll leave the reader to decide who's the more reasonable voice.

UPDATE: The far-right Fleur de Lisieux Party has announced it is seeking compromise with other parties, including
the far-left SBL, on a vote of non-confidence to trigger a snap election. More to come.

Local Analysis
The Pembemala movement: A legacy of violence and racism in Sarawak Darulhana

Image

In-depth: Decades after Bela's founding and Haji Ahmad Bela's death, the radical Malay supremacist movement may be even more influential today than during its inception

Last month, the United Nations announced its decision to remove the Malay extremist group, Pembemala(Pembela Bangsa Melayu), from its foreign terror list.

The move was met with backlash from Southern Sarawakian's rights advocates and the South Sarawak condemned the decision as “rewarding” Northern Sarawakian's extremism.

While Pembemala hasn’t been directly linked to a terrorist attack since 2013, experts assert that the radical right-wing movement may be even more influential today than during its inception.

A history of violence and racism

Pembemala is a splinter group of the North Sarawak political party Bela, which was founded by Haji Ahmad Bela in 2000. The Brunei-born radical ran for elections under Bela several times, before finally landing a seat in the North Sarawak parliament, or Dewan Undangan, in 2003.

Ahmad Bela’s anti-Southern racism and Malay supremacist ideology made him an outsider in the Dewan Undangan. His beliefs included expelling non-Bumiputras from North Sarawak and advocating for a state dictated by Malay's law.

Parliamentary members would often boycott his Dewan Undangan speeches and ignore his proposed legislation. Ahmad Bela only served a single parliamentary term due to the Dewan Undangan passing an amendment banning parties that incite racism from running.

Following Ahmad Bela's assassination in 2007, Bela split into two groups — Bela and Pembemala. Pembemala, or “ Defender of the Malay Nation” in acronim-Malay, was run by Ahmad Bela’s son, Haji Muhammad Adat.

Osman Jelani, a Samarahan-based investigative journalist and Bela expert, explained to DHNews the meaning behind Pembemala's name as The Defender of Malay Nation still being will happen through his son.

“So as long as the son was alive, the main vehicle of the Ahmad Bela movement was Pembemala,” Osman said.

Both organisations were declared terrorist entities in 2013 after a Bela supporter, Hasyim Indra, gunned down 29 worshippers at the Holy Temple in South Kuching. The UN then added Pembemala to its terror list in the same year.

Organisations affiliated with Bela have been involved in anti-Non-Bumiputras violence over the years. Semboyan, a Malay underground terror unit, committed several attacks in the 2010 against Southern Sarawakian.

The suspects behind the 2006 killing of Majid Ghani, the Brunei-Malay Anti-Discrimination Committee’s West Coast director, are believed to be from Pembemala's Malay Defense League.

The UN Department justified its delisting decision by citing that Pembemala hasn’t been engaged in terrorism for a number of years, but Osman said that reasoning doesn’t hold weight.

“The grossest thing to come out of that announcement is the pretence that they haven't committed a terror attack in five years,” Osman said. “Are these not the same Pembemalaist who organised anti-Southern and anti-Non Bumiputras pogroms and race riots all across the country last May? That doesn't count as Pembemalaist terror?”

The last known terror attack to be committed by a Pembemala member was in 2004, when an North Sarawak soldier abandoned his post and shot four Southern's tourist.. But Osman explained that just because the group hasn’t been violent under its original name doesn’t mean it’s inactive.

According to Osman, Ustaz Haji Zulfikli Hasis took over as the top religious leader of the Pembemalaist movement after Ahmad Bela’s son, Muhammad Adat, was assassinated in 2007. At that year’s annual tribute to Ahmad Bela,Zulfikli declared the deceased extremist was right and his work must continue.

To Be Continued

      |
Prime Minister Dubois has announced the government will fully withdraw from the Nickel Mine Agreement signed last week with US corporations and will restart its years-long public healthcare reform process. Protestors in the capital have celebrated in the streets and on social media, with the hashtag #OuiDubois trending locally, a catchphrase used extensively during Dubois's reelection campaign three years ago, now appropriated by anti-government demonstrators to mock the prime minister and the ruling Conservative Party.

    The Events So Far:

One week ago, tensions flared over the signing of a nickel mine agreement that many indigenous communities and the miners' labour union claimed would outsource the revenue of future nickel mines and negatively impact the archipelago of Saint Catherines' ecosystem. US electric battery giant Electron, one of the agreement's signatories, has faced mounting scrutiny in Oceania and the United States for its purported failure to disclose unpaid wages and its African sources of lithium that have faced previous human rights violations.

Recently, indigenous chiefs from the Saint Catherines island chain also claimed its meetings with the government before the signing had promised to prevent the nickel industry from privatizing just weeks before the dealmaking started a year ago. The nickel mines of Saint Lisieux generate billions of dollars worth of revenue for the state-owned mining company Lisieux Nickel, which has a decades-long revenue-sharing agreement with indigenous communities.

Two days after the agreement, the Dubois administration proposed reforming the healthcare system by relying on third-party private contractors and companies to shorten wait times, a part of the many efforts to cut deficit spending across the board. The opposition and FN Doctors Union quickly pounced on the proposal and called the reform a "nightmare." Meanwhile, indigenous leaders saw the healthcare reform as an attempt to wrestle control of indigenous-operated healthcare and bring private interests in between the interests of indigenous Lisieuxians.

Today's news of the government taking steps back from its position has shocked political analysts and correspondents but was welcomed by the unions, their supporters, and the opposition online. "It is surprising because of how firmly this government has stood by its convictions before, such as the Prisons Act debacle a year ago," said Marcee Duvall, a political science professor at the University of Thérèse, "though, I suspect it had more to do with the Fleur de Lisieux coming out and vocally opposing the reforms, even suggesting it might back the opposition during a no-confidence vote."

The Conservatives are now polling dead last, with only the Libertarian Bloc trailing behind. Meanwhile, the Fleur de Lisieux has come out of the scandal as a clear winner, indicating a significant jump from 10th most favourable to 3rd, according to LisieuxForum.gov. Almost 59% of those polled who indicated they leaned right, agreed that they have a more favourable view of the FDL, compared to 3% agreeing they have a more favourable view of the Conservatives.

Interesting that Delacroix has said she will leave her position. It's been apparent for months that the Fleur de Lisieux have been courting her to their side of the pen. I don't think it's because she necessarily disagreed with the decision, but more like she's jumping ship. Wonder if other allies of Dubois will follow suit.

Agausian Appellate Court denies appeal of Albanian national
Author: Ant́oli Svórod
Friday, April 21, 2023

Image

Odssa - Arben Dauti, an ethnic Albanian national, has had his conviction for drug trafficking upheld by the fourth district appellate court in the city of Odssa, Slavuri Region. Dauti had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of trafficking a substantial quantity of illegal drugs.

Dauti's case has been closely monitored by law enforcement agencies and the public, as it highlights the ongoing problem of drug trafficking in the region. Agausian law enforcement officers conducted weeks of investigation, which led to Dauti's arrest for trafficking heroin from central Asia to central and western Europe.

During the operation, law enforcement officers seized a total of 20 kilograms of heroin, along with a large sum of cash believed to be linked to the drug trafficking operation. Dauti was subsequently charged with drug trafficking and money laundering.

In the appeal his lawyer argued that there were inconsistencies in the prosecution's case. Dauti's lawyer argued that the police had violated his client's constitutional rights during the investigation and arrest. The defense claimed that the evidence was obtained illegally and should be suppressed, and that the trial judge had erred in allowing the evidence to be presented to the jury. However, the court found no merit in the appeal.

Dauti's case serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the need for continued efforts to combat this illegal activity. The court's decision is a clear message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated, and that those involved in such activities will face severe consequences.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies, the problem of drug trafficking continues to be a significant challenge in Agausia. In recent years, the region has seen an increase in drug trafficking, partly due to the war in Ukraine which has forced traditional black market shipping routes to reroute.

However, authorities remain committed to combating the illegal drug trade and are working to improve their strategies and tactics to address the problem. The fight against drug trafficking is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies continue to work tirelessly to keep the region safe from this dangerous activity.

Green leader Dianne Fitzgerald harassed, car set alight in Invercargill

Longtime Green Party leader Dianne Fitzgerald became the victim of what Police are calling 'targeted political harassment and intimidation' over the weekend, as vandals damaged her car and Invercargill home, as well as painting 'anti-communist' messages on the footpath outside.

Police were called to Fitzgerald's property in Redleaf, North Invercargill, in the early hours of this morning following reports of ongoing property damage. Fitzgerald's Tesla was set alight, with her front fence also being spraypainted with what Police have described as 'inflammatory' messages. According to witnesses, the messages read 'No commies in Drongonia', 'f*g lover', and 'f*ck off red scum'.

Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, but denied to provide further details. A statement was released earlier today by the Parliamentary Security Service, the agency which is responsible for the safety of Members of Parliament and their families. It read, in part, "PSS has been informed by Police of an attack on a member of Parliament. The appropriate precautions have been taken to ensure Ms. Fitzgerald's safety while an investigation is ongoing."

Fitzgerald told National Radio's weekend host, Peter Henry, that she "is not scared" and that "the attack just solidifies our belief that we're doing the right thing, and angering the right people." She also told Henry that she believed the attack was "the work of far-right extremists" It is believed that the attack is in response to the recent introduction to Parliament of Green-backed bills such as those to ban the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030, increase taxes on those earning more than $60,000 per year, and to ban the sale of cigarettes to those born after 2010. None of the bills have made it to a vote.

Labour leader Phoebe Schofield told media this afternoon that "under a Labour government, these dangerous terrorists will be crushed. Every person, regardless of political affiliation, deserves to be safe in their own home." She added that "the anti-LGBTI propaganda itself should be an additional crime, but this government is too cowardly to follow decent examples and implement hate speech laws."

Prime Minister English told TVDG the attack was "unacceptable".

Protests enter second week as McDowell administration faces increased scrutiny

TOKAI - Protests have entered their second week as Torisakian citizens have taken to the streets in large numbers in recent weeks to protest against a range of issues affecting their daily lives. Demonstrations have been triggered by a combination of factors, including increased housing costs, inflation, rising unemployment rates, increased taxes, and social justice concerns. The protests, which have at times turned violent, have seen over 300 people arrested and nearly $1 billion dollars in property damage caused.

While protests have occurred across the entire country, the most concentrated areas have been Tokai, Koradai, East Lake, and Auerila. The most violence has been seen in Tokai, where an estimated 150 people have been injured over the past ten days. Tokai also has the highest police presence with the Tokai Metropolitan Police, Tokai SWAT, and the Torisakia Counter-Terrorism Force (TCTF) involved in controlling crowds and limiting violence and damage.

Many protestors say they are frustrated with the government's response to the country's economic challenges, including rising housing costs and inflation. These issues have made it difficult for people to make ends meet, with some struggling to afford basic necessities like food and healthcare.

"[I] was promised with a well paying job and an affordable home right after university by McDowell's own promises." A protestor who wished to remain anonymous said. "In a year since I graduated I have yet to find a job in my field of study and I have completely given up on finding a home or apartment. At this point it's more affordable for people to live in their cars, if they can even afford them".

The unemployment rate and worker's rights have also been a key issue for protestors, who argue that the government has not done enough to create jobs, support those who have lost work due to the economic downturn, and not providing a livable wage or benefits for those who are employed. Many workers and workers unions have gone on strike, bringing many areas of the normally bustling Torisakian economy to a standstill. Torisakia National Transit Authority workers went on strike on April 10th, and as such several subway lines have been shut down across the country. Healthcare workers have also staged strikes, bartering for a reformed work culture and better pay.

"We're some of the heroes of this country yet we're living paycheck to paycheck not knowing if we'll be able to even eat three days out of a week" An anonymous healthcare worker told TNN. "Something has to change. We're done sitting around waiting for these "leaders of the people" to do it. They've proven they can't. It's time for action".

In addition to economic grievances, protestors have also been calling for greater attention to social justice issues. Many are concerned about systemic inequality and discrimination based on race, gender, and sexual orientation. They are calling for the government to take action to address these issues, including by implementing policies to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace, schools, and other areas of society. While Torisakia has enacted legislation regarding protections for people within the LGBTQ+ communities, many say that the polices are out-dated, vague, and plain "not effective".

"Being treated with respect is a basic human right." Another anonymous protestor said, shawled in a Pride flag. "How can we call ourselves a democratic country if we don't even respect our own citizens anymore? It's sad we went through this over 40 years ago and it's still an issue". The protestor is alluding to the anti-LGBT protests and riots of the 1970s which led to the first LGBT protection laws.

The government has responded to the protests with a mixture of force and dialogue. While some police forces have been accused of using excessive force to disperse crowds, the government has also attempted to engage with protestors and address their concerns.

"A nation that is divided within itself cannot stand as a beacon of hope and leadership to the world. Unity must be restored before any true progress can be made" President Doug McDowell told reporters in his daily press meeting. "I call on all Torisakian citizens to return to a demonstration of peace and willingness. When [we] speak rationally and listen with empathy, we break down the walls that divide us and create the conditions for peace".

President McDowell has made several public statements acknowledging the protestors' grievances and promising to take action to address them. However, his approval rating has declined sharply in recent weeks, with only 42% of Torisakians expressing confidence in his leadership.

Many protestors have been calling on McDowell to resign, citing his economic policies as "anti-Torisakian and Plutocratic", his undelivered promises from his 2020 presidential campaign, and his vague and "word salad" responses to the demonstrations, with some believing McDowell is more concerned about dispersing the protests rather than addressing the issues they are about.

McDowell was re-elected President of Torisakia in 2020 as part of the New Democratic Party and has pushed an agenda of expanded economic freedom and social welfare reforms. McDowell was first elected in 2016 following the impeachment and removal of Rosalind Dupond, a Conservative, as President during another turbulent time in Torisakia political history. With the 2024 Federal Election approaching, McDowell will be ineligible to run again in accordance with 13th Amendment of the Torisakia Constitution, which states that no one may serve as President for more than two terms.

The protests have become a significant political challenge for the government, with many citizens calling for a major overhaul of the country's economic and social policies. While it remains to be seen whether these protests will lead to lasting change, they have made it clear that many Torisakians are dissatisfied with the status quo and are demanding action from their leaders.

Record High Temperatures Threaten Golyna

Orchard Park, Callahan: On a normal spring day, Orchard Park in Inner Callahan is quite busy, full of children playing, picnics on the Central Lawn, and other activities. But today was no normal spring day. Orchard Park was chalk full of people, from sunbathers on the Lawn to swimmers crowding the pool to a dangerous level, the park was full of people. Anywhere else in the city was nearly deserted, unless the building was air conditioned. This scene is now day to day life throughout most Golynan cities and towns, all because of a major heat wave striking the country. Along the coast, temperatures are reaching up to 43 degrees Celsius, while the inland region near Richterville has had temperatures climbing to 38 degrees Celsius. Only a few outliers in the Southerly Province have been recorded with temperatures going as low as 15 degrees Celsius, a standard spring temperature for parts of the plains. The weather is so bad that a nationwide heat warning (with parts of the Southerly Province exuded) has been issued. "We want to make sure that those in our nation are safe from these dangerous temperatures," said a spokesperson of the Civil Weather Service. "Things are heating up, and that can cause major issues for our medical system, so we recommend you stay inside as much as possible, especially in humid areas." The heat wave is predicted to die down in the coming weeks, but at the time it is unknown how long it will last.

Sudan Conflict: Ten Sarawakians successfully transferred to safety, said Awang Kassim

SANTUBONG-Ten Sarawakians who were in Sudan have been moved to a safe location, said Foreign Minister Datu Seri Pehin Haji Awang Kassim bin Awang Ismail.
He said the operation was a preparatory step by the Sarawakians Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, to gather Sarawakian in a safe location for the evacuation process out of Khartoum later.
"Alhamdulillah, yesterday, after making an in-depth assessment and with a mandate from the Wisma Adenan Special Team, our Embassy officers in Khartoum managed to bring out two Sarawakians from their place to a safe location.
"In the operation, our officers also helped with moving two Canadians, one American and two South-Sarawakians citizens from the area," he said in a statement.
Awang Kassin said that although the operation was extremely high-risk, it had to be carried out to ensure the safety of Sarawakians who needed help.
The situation in Sudan, especially in most locations in Khartoum, is getting worse all the time with the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Commenting further, Awang Kassim said the situation in Sudan is very complex and frequently changing, with both warring parties still fighting.
He said that the ceasefire that has been proposed several times by the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United States has not been observed by the warring parties.
"Let us pray to the Almighty to take care and protect the safety of our people in Sudan, and for the operation to bring them back to their homeland to be eased," he said.
