The Tokyo Incident [IC | MT | OPEN]

Postby JSDF-JAPAN » Sun Mar 26, 2023 4:44 am

THE TOKYO INCIDENT

OOC

Nobody would have thought it was possible.

Not here.

Not again.

In the wake of the horrifying events of the Second World War, Japan threw down her arms and vowed never again to wage war in 1954 as a result of the Security Treaty between Japan and the United States, the Japanese Self-Defence Forces were formed, subject to strict legal and constitutional limits on its use of force. Japan's Constitution renounced war as a sovereign right of the nation and prohibited using force to settle international disputes. As a result, the JSDF is only authorized to use force in self-defense or in defense of Japan under attack.

Never again would Japan repeat the mistakes of its Imperial Past. Never again would they inflict even a tenth of the pain they had suffered.

Into a new age they would march, having turned rifles into plowshares.

But time and geopolitics have a funny way of smothering hope into the muck.

Massive political infighting in their ally of the United States had resulted in a gradual withdrawal of American troops as the domestic situation in their Deep South was on the verge of escalating into a Civil War. The two Koreas had just suffered the Second Peninsular War which saw over ten million dead on both sides, for no real gain and literally no change in the border. The People's Republic of China was now building up its military to unprecedented levels. If this was for a showdown in the Taiwan Strait or a strike north against a weakened Russia or even against Japan, was far from clear.

In the middle of all of these, the Japanese Isles stood on a knife's edge as the world seemed to descend into chaos. But the Japanese saw themselves as above that. They thought they could ride out the storm.

However, in 2020, a massive economic downturn struck the country brought on by a bubble created via speculation, allowed to run rampant due to members of the Zaibuatsu Megacorpations benefiting too much from it. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese became destitute overnight as banks and the stock market crashed. Protests erupted across the country as citizens demanded better government response to the crisis. But the rise of Ultranationalist factions in the government made cooperation nigh impossible leading to political deadlock. The situation was exacerbated by the assassination of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, ironically by an Ultranationalist who felt he wasn't doing enough, leaving a power vacuum in the government.

Amid this turmoil, rumors began to circulate that members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) were growing increasingly dissatisfied with the government's handling of the crisis. The frustration with the lack of decisive leadership and the perceived inadequacy of the government's response to the crisis fueled growing resentment within every rank of the JSDF. The military leadership began to choose sides.

In 2021, Yoshihide Suga was appointed as the new Prime Minister, tasked with regaining control of the country and restoring stability. However, tensions continued to rise as high-ranking Generals and officers of the JSDF publically grew increasingly critical of the government's handling of the crisis in direct contradiction to the constitution. Suga attempted to placate the military with promises of increased funding and support, but it soon became clear that this would not be enough to assuage their concerns.

By 2022, the situation had become increasingly dire. Suga attempted to assert his authority by cracking down on dissent and increasing surveillance of citizens, but these measures only served to further erode public trust in the government. The JSDF grew bolder and more organized, staging small-scale protests and demonstrations in Tokyo and other major cities.

There had to be a breaking point and that came on 2022 December 25...

Miyoshi Michi, 8, and his mother and father made their way through Tokyo Station, the air was filled with the festive spirit of Christmas. Colorful lights twinkled from every corner, and the sound of joyful carols could be heard throughout the busy station.

They were all bundled up in warm winter coats and hats as they made their way to their destination, the massive Christmas tree set up by JSDF veterans. As they walked, they passed by a large truck parked at the side of the road.

Michi noticed a man with dark glasses and clothes jump out of the cab of the truck, a baseball hat concealing his face. The man ran into the crowd and shoved anyone in his way out of the path. Michi didn't think of telling his parents about the man. Maybe he needed to use the bathroom. But he left the truck engine running.

"Hello there!" a volunteer in a Santa Costume exclaimed as he walked up to them. "Merry Christmas! Would you like a gift?"

Michi's eyes lit up with excitement as they eagerly accepted the presents offered to them. They tore open the wrapping paper to reveal toy cars, dolls, and candy canes.

The parents smiled with gratitude, thanking the volunteers for their kind gesture. They felt the warmth and generosity of the holiday spirit all around them.

As they continued on their way, the family felt a sense of joy and community that only Christmas could bring. They held hands and sang carols as they walked through the station, spreading their happiness to those around them.

Then suddenly everything turned white and Michi couldn't hear anymore.

When the truck bomb detonated in the middle of crowded Christmas celebrations around Tokyo Station, it was the deadliest bombing in history up to that point. 378 people were killed instantly and as the sirens grew louder over the screams and moans of the many hundreds of wounded, everyone knew that the death toll would get even higher.

But the dust hadn't even settled and social media was already rife with claims that the perpetrator was a Far-Left Extremist which was quickly parroted by members of the JSDF which were now blaming the National Diet for this. They called for Martial Law to be declared but once more the National Diet, perhaps as expected, deliberated not because of infighting but because this had simply never happened before. There were no provisions in the current Japanese constitution or laws for martial law.

What the JSDF was demanding they do was not only impossible but outright illegal.

As the awful night progressed, the clamouring now grows louder.

The office of the director of the National Intelligence Service was dark and had a secretive atmosphere. As a space that controls all information in Joseon, the office itself delivered a sense of pressure to the visitor.

Foreign Minister Han Soyeon was one of the few people who felt no pressure. Due to her nature as a foreign minister, she had a lot to discuss with the National Intelligence Service, which is why she has no choice but to visit the office of the head of the National Intelligence Service frequently.

"Would you like a cup of tea? You can choose between coffee, green tea, or black tea." Park Joo Tae, director of the National Intelligence Service, stood up to greet Han Soyeon.

"I'd appreciate it if you could give me black tea. By the way, you must be very tired from the situation in the neighboring town." Han Soyeon sighed as he sat down.

"It can't be seen as the neighboring town. Anyway, it's a place that exists in another multiverse, right?" Park Joo Tae took hot water from the water purifier into a cup and put a tea bag into the cup. Steam was coming out of the cup.

"I see. That's not the neighboring town. Even so, it's true that it's bound to bother you. The expansion of the JSDF's authority will eventually shake up the geopolitical situation. If that happens, it's hard to stabilize here anymore."

"I'm sure it's going to be a problem. But even so, we have no justification to stop them."

"Why?" wondered Han Soyeon.

"First, we are not their 'neighbors'. Faraway countries, not neighboring countries, have no security interface with each other, so there is no reason to talk about security-related issues. Second, we are different from Korea in their multiverse." Park Joo Tae brought a mug of black tea in front of Han Soyeon. Then, he put his green tea bag in another mug.

"In what way are we different from Joseon, no, Korea in the multiverse?”

"First of all, they have been Japanese colonies for 36 years. So what they feel about Japan in their universe is bound to be different than what we feel about Japan in our universe right now."

"I see." Han Soyeon took a sip of tea. A subtle warmth began to coil throughout her body.

"In other words, we have no reason to prevent the JSDF from strengthening its authority. China in the multiverse tried to expand its military power and gain hegemony like China in our universe. But there's no America in their universe. So, there's no U.S. military in their Asia." Park Joo Tae put hot water in a mug with a green tea bag.

"They must be very troublesome. So in their universe, China is a superpower?" Han Soyeon laughed. She took another sip of tea and went on. "Then Japan in the multiverse is experiencing a security crisis.”

"Yes, and there have been recent bombings. and the JSDF is demanding martial law. The problem is that there is no legal basis for martial law in their constitution."

"Then shouldn't martial law be not declared after all? If they try to declare martial law without legal grounds, it's against the Constitution."

"That's not something we should worry about. They'll take care of their constitutional issues. What we need to worry about is the geopolitical crisis that the expansion of the JSDF's powers will bring. What if they rearm the JSDF into an army? What if they invade the Korean Peninsula in the multiverse again? How should we respond?”

"They might try imperialism again." Han Soyeon put down his mug and rose from his seat and approached Park Joo Tae's seat. "If that happens, our government should not remain silent."

"That's right, but we can't stop the trigger to cause that situation. Their universe's Korea is focused on the confrontation between the two Koreas. And we have no justification."

Han Soyeon clasped her head. "Then what should I say in an official statement? Do I have to write, "Criticism, but not criticism?

"Let's announce that we respect the geopolitical situation there, but let's not let Japan fall back on the path of imperialism. That way, we can avoid the statement becoming an empty cry."

Nicholas Marksby

Tokyo Station, Tokyo, Japan |2021H JST, 25DEC22

Nick Marksby was not getting any sleep tonight.

A habitually light sleeper, he had been awakened by the tremor caused by the detonation of a bomb a few blocks away from his midtown Tokyo apartment, and had peered out his window to see fire. In seven minutes, his phone was going off- a call from his boss.

Marksby was a journalist for Meridon News Corporation, one of the country's largest news casters, serving as one of the anchors for this region of the world. It was often quiet here, asides from the occasional festival day, cultural insight piece, or political rally. Today, however, didn't seem like much of that case.

When he had awoken fully, he scrambled to the closet, throwing his suit and jacket on like a madman. His camera crew was to meet him there, and coverage was to begin in an hour's time from the closest block the police would allow.

Fumbling for his door keys as he latched his domicile shut, he had practically sprinted to the filming scene. Cameras were already set up to cover the event, and his set aides quickly helped him in straightening his hair before the cameraman began a countdown as the man prepared to make his broadcast to the public.

Hundreds of miles to his north, however, he was unaware of another growing predicament.

Meridon Defense Forces
Meridonian Navy, Regiment Marines Commando
1 Marine Amphibious Regiment, 4 Battalion Marine Commando
C Company

-
Somewhere in the Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan -2221H JST, 25DEC22

Fires crackled between the assembled Marines of C Company 4/1, who were enjoying a reprieve in their month-long 'field acclimatization' exercise in the snowy woodlands of Hokkaido. As special operations capable soldiers, every infantry Marine had regular exposure to the extremes, so they should know how to fight in it when the time came. This was the end of week two. None of them were particularly thrilled about shivering around a bonfire, thousands of miles from home, and dozens from a cute Japanese girl to spend the night with. Instead they were cold and wet, darkness hanging heavy over the starlit sky as they huddled around the fire.

Their number was about a thousand strong in total- closer to nine hundred, actually. C Company itself was about 250 in all. The four companies of the battalion were camped out in a few mile's stretch along a half-frozen creek in a training area somewhere in the pristine forests of the province. C Company was, coincidentally, where battalion headquarters was camping out for the night- its commander had a penchant for rotating along his subordinate units.

Tonight was Christmas, the halfway point in the most miserable holiday vacation in their life. Command had known morale would not be particularly high, but these soldiers were the Navy's finest, and Meridon expected no less than excellence from them. Their training had certainly put them through worse.

Around the fires, the specialty canned goods were broken out from the logistics units. Candied yams, coffee cakes, mashed potatoes, and turkey- nowhere near as good as the real stuff, but just about as good as they could get. Coffee and cocoa was brewed from the snowmelt, and each man was given a sip of brandy. Revelries were shared, and watchmen were greeted by their comrades with cups of warm beverages- even those manning the pickets along the treeline were included.

While this exercise was supposed to simulate a combat exercise, the battalion commander was not above giving his men a well-needed break. They had been out in the woods for two long weeks, and they'd be here two weeks more.

One such watchman, Lance Corporal Martin Chester, was located with Charlie- a radio operator, monitoring the exercise control frequency, which was their sole link between the JGSDF assisting in this exercise and them. The last time it had been used was at 4:00 AM this morning, when the coordination of a supply airdrop for the battalion was conducted. Otherwise, for training integrity, it was kept quiet.

"Flash. This is Moonray for Lineman Sunray, priority. Respond immediately, over."

Moonray? He hadn't heard that one before, and it wasn't any JGSDF unit. He was familiar with all of their callsigns. But if someone was able to access this frequency and know the identity of the battalion Sunray, it wasn't a joke.

"Station calling, identify. Over." Operating his radio set from a tarp-covered hut, his answering of the call drew the eyebrows of the two other Marines currently in the hut with him. They gathered close.

"Lineman, this is Moonray, Meridonian Naval air early warning and control craft operating from 1 Carrier Task Group. I am on station to provide you a critical update on authority from NORCOM. Acknowledge. "

"Moonray, Lineman. Send message, over."

"Lineman I relay message from NORCOM- reads: Extreme political disruption has emerged following a terror attack in Tokyo. At this time consider exercise suspended. We are organizing your exfiltration at this time. Assume static positions and maintain combat readiness. Expect further updates, this net. Acknowledge receipt."

His companions looked incredulous. They shared a look, a few whispers, and then a response.

"Moonray, we receive. Out."

Lance Corporal Chester threw his cover on before exiting the tent and tugging on the arm of his battalion commander, LCol Calvin Ridgely, who was in a semicircular formation with a few other officers. Ridgely was one of the RMC's top infantry officers, with experience in combat in desert heat and artic sun alike. Beyond his ruthlessly optimistic personality, he loved his troops like sons. Knowing their lives might be at risk, he acted immediately.

The word passed like wildfire. Snow was tossed over fires, dinners stuffed into mouths or thrown out as men scrambled for their tents. Rifles were thrown off safe as night vision goggles were thrown down, plate carriers slid back on, whitesuits slipped over the exterior of their uniforms. Only time would tell how the SDF would react.

Yokohama Bay Bridge
December 26th

It was a busy afternoon in Yokohama as people were commuting back home from work. The sound of car horns filled the air as people tried to make their way across the Yokohama Bay Bridge. Most of the train network had been on lockdown ever since the Christmas incident and some idiot had overturned a truck on the other bridge over Tokyo Bay.

It had only been a single day since the Tokyo Station bombing had occurred yet for everyone on that congested bridge everything felt... unreal. It had been the deadliest direct attack on Japan since the Second World War. Everything screamed at Officer Takashi as his squad car sat trapped between cars midway of the bridge. Police checkpoints had been set near the blast radius and stops were not uncommon now. Flags flew at half-mast while an hour of mourning had occurred earlier in the day. With political bickering, the Diet was a stalemate as always with the topic of Martial Law. Takashi couldn't remember the last time an actual law was passed.

Despite all of this life seemed to continue on like normal as if it had never happened Japan was so deeply shocked by the attack that it was doing its best to pretend it never happened. War even last year with the Korean situation felt so distant from their shores. Only the elders now remembered what it was like to be in a state of existential uncertainty.

Suddenly a low-flying jet roared over the bridge so close that the windows on the cars vibrated. Takashi managed to catch a glimpse of it that told him it was an F-2 Fighter belonging to the JASDF (Japan Air Self-Defense Force).

He wondered what on earth it was doing buzzing the bridge on its own he muttered as he watched it rapidly soar over the skyline of an evening Tokyo.

He never saw the Type 93 Air-to-Ship Missile skim over the waters of the bay...

The missile hit the mid-span of the Yokohama Bay Bridge with a deafening explosion, sending a shockwave that reverberated through the entire structure. The shockwave from the explosion shattered the windows of buildings nearby on the bayfront, sending glass raining down onto the streets that shredded passersby below. The bridge shook violently, and cars were thrown off the edge, plummeting into the water below. Then the middle began to give way in a terrible groan of creaking metal. People screamed and honked their horns in a panic as the bridge began to crumble beneath them. Cars began to fall into the water as the gap cracked open, sending debris and dust flying everywhere. Some people were able to crawl out of their cars and swim to safety, but many were trapped in their vehicles as they plunged into the water below.

As the dust settled, Officer Takashi crawled out of the backseat of the car where he had thrown himself to the ground to avoid the blast. All the windows of his car had been shattered. A massive gap where the mid-span had once stood. The scene was chaotic, with smoke, debris, and the sound of car alarms blaring. He had been in the job for nearly five years by this point, but he had never seen anything like this in his life.

He jumped out the backdoor and got to his feet, his training kicking in as he surveyed the scene. The sounds of screams and cries filled the air, and Takashi's heart sank as he realized the extent of the damage. He saw several cars that were teetering on the edge of the destroyed section of the bridge, and without a moment's hesitation, he raced toward them.

As he reached the first car, he saw that the driver was trapped inside, his legs pinned beneath the crumpled dashboard. Takashi immediately radioed for backup and began to assess the situation. He could see that the driver was in immense pain, but he couldn't tell if he had any other injuries.

The officer knew that he had to act fast, as the car was in danger of falling off the bridge at any moment. He tried to reassure the driver as he worked to free him, but the man was understandably panicked. With one final push, Takashi managed to free the driver's legs, and with the help of some passersby, he was able to get him out of the car just as it started to slide towards the edge of the destroyed section.

As he moved to the next car, he saw that it was a family trapped inside. The mother was crying, and the father was trying to calm her down as their young daughter sat silently in the back seat. The car was in a precarious position, with two of its front wheels hanging over the edge,

Takashi's heart raced as he tried to figure out the best way to get the family to safety. He could see that the father was injured, and the mother was in shock. The officer quickly radioed for more backup, but he knew that they might not arrive in time.

"Close your eyes," he yelled as he grabbed a piece of rubble off the ground and smashed open the back window. "Come on! Come on!"

"My daughter! My daughter!" the woman cried, managing to get her daughter to crawl through the shattered back window.

"It'll be okay, It'll be okay," he shushed the poor crying girl as he carried her back several meters to a safe area before running back to the car. But by then it was too late as he saw it start to tetter off the edge.

"No! No! No!" he shrieked as he grabbed the boot of the car, somehow believing he had enough strength to pull it back down as the boot lifted higher and higher up. He dug his fingernails onto the metal surface and they started screeching as he slowly lost his grip. Eventually, he had to let go. The last thing he saw before the car disappeared over the edge was the desperate eyes of the woman.

Then that terrible splash that nobody could have survived.

Takashi laid sat on that very edge, breathing heavily as he watched the first responders start to arrive on the scene, ushering people away from the edge and rescuing more trapped people in their cars.

"What the hell..." was all he could stammer before he passed out.

By the end of the day as rescue operations finally ceased the death toll was estimated. Eighty-seven dead and more than four hundred were wounded, many from the glass shards of shattered windows all around the bay.

The F-2 was eventually brought down by an F-15J on the outskirts of Tokyo. The pilot didn't eject.

The JSDF later announced that the pilot was a rogue who had switched off his transponder during a routine patrol and infiltrated the airspace of Tokyo by flying mere inches off the surface of the sea before they entered range to launch their missile. They claimed that they believed he was influenced by foreign or socialist agents. They said that if the National Diet had allowed the JSDF to ennact Martial Law this would never have happened, if it was unclear how Martial Law would have stopped this Internal issue.

But that latter bit didn't matter as outrage on Social Media erupted calling for the Diet to break the deadlock at once and declare Martial Law, even spilling onto limited protests on the street that resulted in minor acts of vandalism. Many JSDF members outside of uniform were spotted in these protests.

As the 26th of December came around, out of the freezing snow, JSDF colonel Uyehara Gina marched into the camp. He had a foul look on his face that showed he wasn't pleased with the current arrangements on this date. He would have clearly preferred to be home right now in Kyoto with his wife and son in the midst of the emergency. At the very least she had called and said that she and little Hideki were going out into the countryside to be with her parents until the entire thing blew over.

He watched his breath mist in the frigid air as he wondered how the hell it had come to all of this. His Grandfather had been part of the Imperial Japanese Army during the war. He never told Gina what exactly he did during the war but the way that he had drowned his sorrows in the drink told Gina all he needed to know. A man who came home from the war filled with shrapnel and guilt.

Japan was supposed to have moved on from that horrific era, to put behind that dark legacy of unrestrained militarism and imperialism. To have learned from those mistakes and never ever repeat them. They were supposed to be better than their forebearers in this new world and bear that torch for the next generation.

So how the hell was that torch now flickering? How was that dream now dying as he watched his country start to burst at its seams and start to repeat its mistakes? What would it look like for his son when he grew up and took up that torch? Would there even be a torch to pass on?

These questions and doubts weighed heavily on him as he approached where the Merdion troops had been based. He was one of the coordinators of the entire exercise. Normally he would have contacted them via radio but the radio back at the HQ was going through some technical difficulties and it would be faster if he just hiked out here and explained the how situation.

"Colonel Uyehara Gina! JSDF!" he yelled out as he approached where he remembered the camp would be located according to the maps. "T-there's been an incident and I need to talk to your Ridgely."

Unlike the white suits of the troops, Gina was dressed in a woodland camo that stuck out like a sore thumb against the snow. It was deliberate as he had no intention of being tagged and he had no idea if the Merdions had gotten the word. It would so happen that he would enter the sights of one Lance Corporal Chester.

Koriyan Special Crimes Taskforce Headquarters- Kyotoko: 1800 hours

The air was heavy with the lingering smoke of unfiltered cigarettes as various agents of the taskforce received a briefing regarding a shipment of experimental weapon systems that was hijacked and stolen about 2 weeks ago while in transit to Koriyan Armed Forces test and review personnel. The slideshow of pictures taken from the incident illuminated the whole room as the projection reflected off the smoky haze while simultaneously obscuring the face of the presenter who seemed to drone on in a monotoned voice. He was a member of the Koriyan High Command Office judging by the uniform he was wearing.

Do you think it was an inside job? asked Ryuski Somahura as he took a long drag from his own cigarette letting the smoke slowly filter out through his barely opened lips while he thumbed through the file that was presented. My money's on someone from either the JSDF or someone with a vested interest in seeing the JSDF assume a greater stance in international conflicts.

Katsumura Naofumi took the file from Ryuski with one hand and the cigarette with the other and dumping it into an old cup of coffee. If it was JSDF they were sloppy in execution, if an interested party did it did it, then their image would be tarnished. My money is on a rogue actor- sophisticated criminal element, but for sure someone who has a vested interest in the matter.

Ryuski frowned slightly as he watched his cancer stick float lazily atop the coffee, as he listened to Katsumura's theory. Do you have a candidate in mind? he asked as he took a bit of take out.

My money is the Japanese Defense Minister. she replied

About this time the presentation ended, and the warm glow of fluorescent lighting filled the space to the bemoaning of other agents in the room who had grown accustomed to the darkness of the briefing. The partners stood up as the presenter exited the room and the Section Chief of the department took the front of the room. This case is of extreme importance to the KSCT and we have been tasked with investigating. Katsumura; You posited that the Japanese Defense Minister could be the mastermind behind the attack- As such I'm assigning you and your partner to investigate that angle. Which means you're going in undercover to a host nation. I'll make sure your travel arrangements are prepared. Once your in country make contact with our counter-parts in Japan and see about getting assistance in the investigation. Although I shouldn't need to tell you that provide only the bare minimum information as required to gain that assistance. Information is power and we also do not know if anyone in that office is compromised.

Chief... what about gear? asked Ryuski as he flipped his jacket over his shoulder with a new cigarette hanging precariously from his lips.

Glad you asked. Standard load out and foreign operations electronics. You'll have an operational budget as well. 50,000 local for discretionary spending and 250,000 local for operational spending with approval. If anything else is required anything specific while in country use your budget to procure. You are not authorized to obtain items for use that are considered illegal within the host nation unless life and limb is at risk. replied the Chief as he took a drink of his coffee.

Roger that sir. Lets go Katsumura- we should pack.

Katsumura clipped her under shoulder holster front clip before grabbing her own jacket and following Ryuski from the room into the general operations office where various agents and junior agents sat at desks filing reports and answering phone calls. Ryuski weaved in and out of the space and stopped by his own desk where he opened a draw and grabbed his badge and clipped it to his belt. Katsumura did the same. I'll see you tomorrow Kat.

Same Katsumura replied as they entered different elevators.

Meridon Defense Forces
Meridonian Navy, Regiment Marines Commando
1 Marine Amphibious Regiment, 4 Battalion Marine Commando
C Company

-
Somewhere in the Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan -0814H JST, 26DEC22

"Contact in the treelines, 2-2-4." A whisper came among the sentries mounted on the outskirts of Charlie Company's position, where Marines sat with loaded weapons. Colonel Uyehara was seen at least a mile before he ever came close to any positions, not like he was attempting to hide. Thermals caught him first from a hovering scout drone, then thermals from the overwatch sniper team, and gradually, at least a dozen rifle barrels swung his way. In the darkness of the dawn and the cover of the snow, the Colonel would never have known this.

"What in the fuck is this geezer doing? Lost in the snow?" One sentry nudged his teammate as they watched him continue to their position.

"Fuck if I know. Crazy cunt." He wasn't armed and he wasn't carrying any equipment, and it wasn't until he got in range that they identified his uniform as military. At which point, the watch team's radios cracked into their headsets.

"Spirit 3 Sunray for watch teams, safe all weapons. Contact is unarmed and solitary."

The call from Charlie's company commander was received by the watchmen, who flicked their weapons selectors to safe as he finally came to shouting range.

From snowbanks and behind treelines closest to the Colonel, three pairs of armed men emerged with rifles at a low ready. Facepaint was over their faces in shades of green- the only 'green' part of their body beyond their plate carriers exposed. Their weapons were covered with white wrapping, tape and paint, and their whitesuits covered everything else.

There wasn't a translator on the guard teams. The men there, only knowing basic Japanese, gave him instructions in English.

"Konnichiwa. Commander- that way." The sentry pointed backwards towards what, from a distance, looked like a collection of snowdrifts, but at this distance a trained eye could distinguish as camouflaged tents and bivouacs.

Lieutenant Colonel Ridgely was in full combat gear himself, sat in a dugout covered by a tarp looking over a map of Sapporo. Radios were active intermittently about him, and as the Japanese officer entered the hut, he and the five other Marines manning the station- including Chester - gave him a look.

Ridgely wasn't familiar with the man, but he was with the rank, and offered the Japanese officer a handshake. Not sure how familiar the man was with English, he would have a translator on hand nearby to communicate- that being Chester.

"Colonel- welcome. We've heard there's been some disturbances in Tokyo- accept our condolences. Seeing as it's just you out here, I believe it's safe to assume that we aren't suddenly unwelcome in your country. What do you have for us?"

"I can speak English perfectly well, thank you," he said in English and nodded at the sentry as he trudged towards the hidden tents. His men were capable of doing the same, even if he had to whip the spirit into them to actually get off their lazy bums.

He took off his cap as he entered the tent and noted that everyone here was in full combat gear for what should have been the relative downtime for this exercise. It must be bad here too, he decided.

Uyehara Gina took Ridley's hand with a firm grip before replying, "It's... worse than a disturbance," he said grimly. For a moment he found himself several hours in the past, sitting speechless and pale before his phone as he heard the voice on the other end list the massive casualties that had occurred. "There was a bombing at Tokyo Station that took place last night. We think it was a truck bomb. Even for us, it's still unclear and muddy but from what I've heard the death toll could easily be beyond a thousand."

It hurt to speak them out loud even after all the time he had to process the information.

"A-a-and if that senseless slaughter wasn't enough," Gina struggled to get the words to come out of his throat, "There was just another attack on the Bay Bridge. A missile of some sort mid the bridge and destroyed it... alongside many people on that bridge. There was a congestion of cars."

He stopped himself now. There was no point letting out his grief. Not here. Not now. He was a god-damn professional and he had to act like it.

"I haven't heard anything about High Command saying you're unwelcome but neither is it the best to leave now. Even if the National Diet hasn't approved it, the navy has just been sent out to patrol the waters due to the increased threat. They're stopping and boarding every ship entering or leaving our ports. The rumors are they're going to do the same to all aircraft as well. If you were to try to leave even if you wanted to, and this isn't coming from me personally, they may try to detain your unit for possible suspicions. We have no idea who carried out the attacks but whoever did somehow took control of an F-2 Fighter Jet to bomb the Bridge. Paranoia is starting to infect every level now..."

We deeply mourn the series of terrorist attacks in Japan. Terrorism cannot be justified under any circumstances. We hope that the people behind the terror will be arrested and justice will be served.

However, we have no choice but to express concern about the recent moves of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. Even though there is already a judicial body called the Japanese police, trying to declare martial law without foundation in the Constitution just because a terrorist attack occurred is an act that puts democracy at risk. We do not want democracy in one of the democracies in Asia to be jeopardized.

Of course, we are well aware that the security situation in Asia in the multiverse has recently been compromised. Expanding the capabilities of military organizations such as the military and the Self-Defense Forces is an inevitable factor in saving countries facing a security crisis.

But we believe that there is a dangerous perception within Japan's Self-Defense Forces to justify Japan's colonial rule and imperialism in the past, and a perception of racism toward its neighbors, given recent remarks by Toshio Tamogami, a general of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. Peace in Asia could once again be at stake if such an organization takes enormous power. We hope that Japan in the multiverse will not repeat the same mistakes as it did in the past. Imperialism and colonial rule are unjustifiable crimes. We want Japanese politicians to uphold the principles of democracy and peace.

Warm tea and cold walls of the residence

Grand Duke Casimir I, along with his family, left the capital city of Artane for a seaside residence, where the wind was much cooler and more pleasant than the hustle and bustle of the city. For the children, it meant seaside activities such as building sandcastles and learning to surf, for his wife, an opportunity to rest from cosmetics and skin regeneration, and for Grand Duke Casimir I himself, a more enjoyable place to work.

He attended online meetings, signed virtual documents with a special device, read reports and news from around the world from a comfortable armchair, when he received a sudden request for a conversation from the Chancellor of Foreign Affairs, which he accepted without hesitation.

Grand Duke Casimir I leaned back in his chair, looking into the eyes of the stressed Chancellor. "What's happening, Chancellor Mainard Larue? I've signed everything you sent me. I checked all the documents twice."

"Yes, yes, Your Grand Majesty, I just received them a moment ago, but a few days ago, some things happened that leave us with no time to lose! Japan, one of our diplomatic, technological, and trade contacts, is going through an economic crisis that has turned into a political crisis! We have to start reacting somehow before it's too late," the Chancellor calmed down after releasing his emotions, as he still had a few things to prepare before issuing a statement. "I'm contacting a few people right now."

"Yes, we need to act before this crisis spreads to other countries. Please give me the contact information of our ambassador in Korea; we need to start some joint action."

"Of course, Your Grand Majesty. I'm sending it right away."

Ambassador Lothaire Babin

Dear Right Honourable Jeong Dohyung,

We hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. We, the Grand Duchy of Japuile, are deeply concerned about the current economic and political situation in Japan. In this regard, we would like to humbly propose a joint political and economic action plan to mitigate the negative effects of this unstable situation and prevent its spread to other countries.

We firmly believe that by working together, we can achieve more than we can individually. Our joint efforts will have a greater impact and possibility of success. We understand that the Grand Duchy of Japuile does not have a large army or navy, but we would like to assure you that we are willing to provide our contacts and influence to help stabilize Japan.

Furthermore, we would like to express our readiness to support Korean security during this difficult period. We are willing to send our small fleet of battleships to protect the Korean coast, or provide any other assistance that may be required.

We sincerely hope that you will consider our proposal and look forward to working with you to achieve our mutual goals.

Respectfully,
Lothaire Babin,
Ambassador of The Grand Duchy of Japuile

Ridgely's expression was already terse. Hearing that nearly a thousand people had been killed- on Christmas, no less- was not a welcoming thought. He shook his head and offered his condolences to the Colonel, on behalf of his countrymen.

"..That's not ideal, no." Letting the Colonel speak of the Navy patrols and the Air Force closing airspace, it seemed like their window was closing quicker than they thought. Them taking a defensive stance may not have helped their odds now, but..

"..We have orders from our highers that the exercise has been suspended on our end. Our government is hoping to get us out peacefully, but we've been told to sit tight until then. I suppose, then, the question remains. Unless you're just here as the bearer of bad news, perhaps you've got a way out."

Meridonian Navy
MRS Kohina (R11), Sistine-class aircraft carrier

-
North Pacific Ocean, approximately 175 miles southwest of Tokyo

Another routine day of flight operations aboard Kohina. Yet, the air was tense.

Everyone on board had heard about the events that had taken place in Tokyo last night. Kohina had scrambled a Herald AEWC aircraft to monitor the situation, and, as a precaution, had kept a rotating flight up, in addition to its constant four-ship patrol of fighters.

The Tactical Actions Center- or TAC, as it was more commonly referred to- was the beating heart of 1 Carrier Task Group, with controllers monitoring the airspace about the carrier. Kohina had a current total of eleven aircraft airborne- a constant 4-ship Combat Air Patrol, an AEWC supporting it, a plane guard helicopter hovering off of her starboard, 2 Wasps conducting a training mission two hundred miles south, a tanker, and two aircraft returning from a training sortie that were due to land in the next five minutes. Her escorts had two, both helicopters- one running a training mission, the other shuttling mislabeled mail. All 13 of these aircraft were being kept watch of by the overhead AEWC aircraft, and so was traffic over Tokyo.

Which is why it was immediately raised alarms when a JASDF F-2 was detected, operating without its transponder, outside of approved military training routes. The TAC Officer on Duty, a Lieutenant Commander, was tugged to look at the screen. Coffee cup in hand as he had just woken up to begin his nightshift, his brow was arched.

"He was on normal routing until a while ago- a failure, maybe?" The operator suggested. "..Why the hell would be flying that low, that fast? There's no way they'd let him do something funky like that around Tokyo."

"No, they wouldn't. Wait a minute..." The operator saw a disturbance on his screen, tapped it, and frowned. A hand went to his mic.

"Darkspear for Whitecap, we've got-"

"Darkspear, Whitecap, launch detection, one ship yours three-thirty one-seven-three!"

The sound of chairs scooting and legs moving rapidly across the TAC erupted as the controller leaned in. Whitecap, the overhead AEWC, had caught the F-2's launch almost immediately as it conducted it, the unmistakable radar and signal return of a land attack missile. Critically, Whitecap had not mentioned this missile was moving away from them.

The reaction was immediate. The TAC talker practically screamed the phrase over the scrambling of officers in the war room-

"Sound action stations! Away alert five!"

A switch flipped, the bridge was alerted, and within seconds things began to run into motion. Within thirty seconds, the TAC talker had sent the orders to the task group AD coordinator aboard the destroyer Caster Ridge, and the air group coordinator down the hallway aboard Kohina.

From five ships across the task groups, air search radars lit up immediately, sweeping the sky for a missile they couldn't detect. Aboard the carrier decks, pilots sleeping in their jets were jostled awake as the ground crews scrambled to start the engines of the fighters. As soon as the pilots got the message, switches were flipped, engines roared to life, and the grey figures began to line up for launch on the bow catapults.

Already airborne was a four-ship of Wasps, who broke from their lazy circular hold overhead the fleet and began to rocket north towards the threat. Their own radars began to illuminate the Tokyo coastline looking for the missile that had already hit.

It was about three minutes after the alarm had been sounded. The alert fighters had just been launched, the only part of them visible the orange afterglow of their burners taking them rapidly to altitude. The fighters, streaming close to the Japanese ADIZ, got their first hint after not a single radar indication had returned positive. None of the ships had detected anything either. A few minutes from there passed, and they continued forward. Neither the ships, nor the fighters saw anything.

Then they confirmed it with their targeting pods, seeing smoke in the far horizon of the coming dusk.

"Whitecap, this is Victory 1. That missile might not have been inbound- I'm seeing something got hit in Tokyo. We can take a look but we're not in contact with Japanese ground controllers."

"Victory, this is Whitecap, negative. Abort mission, contact Red Crown on 8 for marshal instructions."

Just on the border of the Japanese airspace, the four fighters aborted their ingress, turning back for home.

To who it may concern to our friends in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and to Japan as a whole-

Meridon wishes to extend its sincere condolences regarding the violence occurring in Japan, and wishes to make it known that Meridon is prepared to offer assistance in finding and bringing to justice the perpetrators of these disgusting attacks against your people and your nation. Meridon would also like to communicate that it is prepared to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Tokyo following these horrible attacks, should the government of Japan request it.

However, we are concerned by calls in your nation for martial law, a highly dangerous precedent that Meridon does not see as beneficial to neither Japan nor the relations your country shares with Meridon. While we remain committed to fostering a friendly relationship between our two countries, at this time we do not believe that Meridonian military presence within Japan- particularly, the battalion of Regiment Marines Commando (RMC) that is deployed in your northern province.

While unfortunate, Meridon hereby informs the Japanese Self-Defense Forces that we are suspending the training exercise indefinitely until the internal situation in your country is able to stabilize. We intend to remove our forces from Hokkaido via military airlift flights from Kenbetsu Air Base in eastern Hokkaido. If this is not amenable, the Defense Forces would intend to conduct an extraction of our forces via tiltrotor flights from a nearby Amphibious Ready Group at a location of mutual agreement. We request your rapid acknowledgement and approval of these plans.

If Meridon is able to assist in any way during this time of crisis for your nation, please let us know.

Respectfully written,

Dear Ambassador Lothaire Babin.

We thank the Grand Duchy of Japuile for its thoughtfulness. Like The Grand Duchy of Japuile, we are deeply concerned about the current political situation in Japan. Terrorist attacks are obviously terrible violence that cannot be justified. But we're convinced that there's a force inside Japan that's trying to take advantage of that chaos to strengthen its power. And that force doesn't seem to fit the values of democracy or peace.

We agree that there is a need for political and economic action jointly with The Grand Duchy of Japuile. If the two countries jointly form a consultative body and work closely together, they will be able to better defend peace and security in the East Asian region.

We are also willing to conduct joint military exercises with The Grand Duchy of Japuile's fleet. If the two countries conduct military exercises together, they will be able to facilitate military cooperation between the two countries and strengthen their defense of the stability of Korea and East Asia.

Thank you very much for deciding to join us in this difficult time.

Sincerely,

We should reach Japanese airspace in 8 hours. announced the pilot as the cabin lights dim.

OOC: Japan if you need to you can take limited control of my agents arrival to speed things up.

The wheels of the plane touched down on the tarmac at Haneda Airport as the evening started to roll around. The Tokyo Cityline served as the foreground before a sky that was bright amber orange with the cold blue tendrils of the night starting to reach outwards to claim part after part of it. However, the first thing that the two agents would notice as the passenger plane taxied down the runway was the sudden screech of engines above them. Peeking out the windows of their private airplane they noted in the darkening sky the single red glow of a low-flying fighter jet of some kind. Seconds later it was followed by three more double lights, indicating twin-engine fighters.

Somahura walked forward to the cabin to check in on what that had been to find the pilot and co-pilot listening intensely to the radio. "-ll pilots, this is Haneda Airport control tower. Due to unforeseen circumstances, all flights into and out of Haneda Airport have been grounded until further notice. We are advising all pilots to turn back to their origin airport or land at the nearest available airport outside the Tokyo metropolitan area."

The Tower Controller paused for a moment to let the message sink in before continuing. "We repeat, Haneda Airport is now on lockdown and all air traffic is suspended until further notice. We urge all pilots to comply with this directive and seek alternate airports. Please maintain communications and await further instructions."

"Well, at least we've got wheels on the ground," The pilot shrugged.

In the back cabin, Naofumi's Cell Phone rang. One of the few people who had this number was their Japanese Security apparatus contact but the number simply read [BLOCKED]. Answering the phone a voice came on. Male, mid-forties maybe, certainly Japanese. "The first pawn on the chessboard has moved and now it's Black's turn. There's been an incident at the Yokohama Bay Bridge. The airport is about to go on lockdown and nobody arriving is going to be let out for possibly days, even those with your clearance. If you want to get into the center of this you'll have to go through unofficial channels, and of course, that has its own risks. You're still free to try the normal channels but I can't guarantee you won't be deported by the end of the day. So what's your choice?"

Katsumura held her phone out in front of her as she and Ryuski took in the voices warnings of the state of Japanese internal affairs. About the same time an attendant of the craft entered the cabin with news. Ryuski held his finger to his lips in the universal quite signal as the man spoke.

So, what's your choice?"

The line was still connected so Ryuski answered the mans question What do you mean? Sir, I think you have the wrong number. It was a code phrase if he man on the other end was who they thought it was he would understand its meaning, if it wasn't then there was plausible deniability. As the line closed the pilot commented over the P.A. system. Lieutenant. Theres a lot of police activity at the terminal. Looks like ground crews are being escorted inside. Ryuski turned to Katsumura and gave a stern look. If you want to back out... now's your chance. Katsumura tilted her head and smiled. And miss this adventure? Never. Ryuski jumped into action and started working on a plane to disembark and get into the country unnoticed.

You. he gestured to the attendant. Alter the flight manifest and make it appear you are here for maintenance- no passengers. The attendant nodded and moved to carry out his order's. He then looked out the windows to get his bearings and survey the local area. Like most international airports there was a natural buffer zone with little urban sprawl to the North and East with a spattering of hangers between here and there. Change out to tactical bdu. Radio silence. Katsumura nodded and started undressing as she walked towards the sleeping room where her bags where located. Ryuski followed suite.

Make sure you have all your documents in order in case we are stopped and detained. Take 25k of the cash we got work on new ID's. Ill take the other half and get us a place to lay low. Once we have our base of operations set up I'll send word to the Chief to send more money via electronic means.

So the mission hasn't changed? she asked as she emerged from her room clad in black fatigues with his pack on her back right as Ryuski did as well.

No. Mission hasn't changed.

If your going to leave I suggest the left landing auxiliary hatch because you got about 7 minutes before 3 squad cars reach our position. announced the pilot over the P.A. once more. With the warning in hand the two partners pushed through the hatch and emerged within the landing gear's holding well before slipping down and making their way to the nearest structure with the least amount of light. A light drizzle starting to fall which would help mask their footsteps from any roving patrols. Bounding from place to place taking care to avoid camera's as much as possible the came upon a guard in a guard post at one of the gates. Ryuski unslung his bag and produced a pair of stun-knuckles which his slipped onto his right hand as well as a small bottle of chloroform and a handkerchief. Slowly they made their way to the rear of the post and Katsumura gave a quick knock. The guard inside shocked stood up and walked out of the guardpost to see who knocked on his door. quickly Ryuski took the man from behind and placed the chloriform soaked cloth over his face causing the man to pass out shortly thereafter. Ryuski took the mans badge and used it to access the local camera feed and reviewed the footage.

When he wakes up he's going to think everything that just happened was a weird dream. Lets go. Sticking to the shadows as much as they could the duo made their way to a parking lot for extended parking for the airport. Look for a vehicle that has a tag from yesterday and is pre-paid for atleast a week. instructed Ryuski as he split off and starting searching. One by one searched until they found a small sedan. Taking out his phone and placed it against the door and opened a frequency jumping app which started cycling through different known car fob signals before it found one and created a car profile allowing Ryuski to unlock the doors and start the engine.

Impressive commented Katsumura as they got in and clicked their seatbelts and drove away from the parking lot after slipping the ticket into the kiosk producing a cash refund, which Ryuski took and placed in the glovebox before turning and hitting the road. Kat. The contact mentioned something about the Yokohoma Bay Bridge. Lets start there tomorrow.

The pair drove for about 30 minutes before they found an extended stay hotel. Ryuski parked the vehicle and went inside coming back shortly after with room keys.

Iraxon III Arkon, sole ruler of Exarkyon, had a decision to make.

Fifty citizens were caught in an Asian country. Why such a number were so far from home Iraxon had no idea.

That did not matter. What mattered was that it somehow became a very popular story, and now Iraxon was obliged by default to do something.

It would be the first time Exarkyon did anything outside of the Tyrian Sea since World War II, a conflict only the more educated Exarkyamed even remembered. The Exarkrion war and local conflicts dominated their world.

But today, the outside world was in the spotlight.

Fifty citizens. Trapped.

First, he would hear what everyone had to say.

The Throne Room

The throne room was an uncomplicated, octagonal room. There were no intricate details in the walls, only banners. The room was tall, though, providing some sense of its importance. One side was the door, six sides had the chairs of the Councilors, and the final one was Iraxon's own seat, the throne of Exarkyon. Iraxon took his seat. The six Councilors took theirs.

Assembled in the middle of the octagonal room were various people, military and diplomatic leaders as well as advisors and representatives. Iraxon began the session:
"As you are all most likely aware, fifty citizens are currently trapped in the Asian country of Japan. The nation has experienced devastating terrorist attacks and rising paranoia. This has become the focus of recent reporting. Rationally or otherwise, the people demand action. We will provide it to them.

Now that the intentions were set, the suggestions came. Many suggestions, some more rational than others, came. The conclusion was a statement, declared by Iraxon and approved by all present:

"Exarkyon condemns the recent terrorist attacks in Japan. We are concerned for fifty of our citizens who, as a group, went to Japan and are currently unable to leave. We ask that the Japanese government allow our citizens to return to their homeland. We, as the Holy Empire of Exarkyon, are willing to provide our own vehicles for transporting them home if Japan declines to allow private transportation to be employed."

The Arkon has spoken. Exarkyon will get its citizens back.

Eirene, Greek Goodness of Peace

Postby Japuile » Thu Mar 30, 2023 10:09 am

Seoul and Limne Conferences

Seoul

On December 29-30, a double political-military conference took place; one held in Seoul and the other in Limne, the Grand Military City. Grand Duke Casamir I, accompanied by experts on domestic and international security, arrived in Seoul to discuss the prevailing situation in Japan. "We should not act individually but together to solve the Gordian knot in Japan caused by the economic collapse that is dragging the entire Japanese politics," said the Grand Duke. They decided to call their organization 'Eirene', after the Greek goddess of peace, until the situation stabilizes, and anyone willing can join the joint activities. The Grand Duchy assured Japan of their humanitarian readiness for help.

Limne

The Limne conference was attended by military men from both countries. The Grand Duchy was represented by Gascon Géroux, the Generale (Grand Admiral) of the Grand Navy. They stood in front of a military shipyard, against the backdrop of black battleships preparing to sail. "Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed members of the Joseon military, I humbly request permission to share some crucial information regarding the current operations of the Grand Duchy of Japuile's Navy. Our Black Artillery Battleship Fleet, under the guidance and approval of South African and Egyptian authorities, has been tirelessly engaging Somali pirates, minimizing their hostile activities. However, in light of our commitment to maintaining strong ties with our Joseon counterparts, we are prepared to transfer the majority of our Black Artillery Battleships to engage in joint exercises with your esteemed fleet. We have taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and protection of our forces during this time, with reserves on standby to defend our borders in the absence of our main force," stated Gascon Géroux.

It was Ms. Lee Dami, the Commander of the VII Maneuver Corps, who led the Joseon delegation at the Limne meeting. She began by introducing the status of some of the available army troops to Gascon Géroux.

"We are prepared to send an Army division and an Air Force combat wing to support the security of the Grand Duchy of Japuile if necessary. We are also prepared to support the distribution of logistics so that Black Artillery Battleship Fleet can operate smoothly on the Korean Peninsula and in our territorial waters."

Lee Young, commander of the 5th Fleet, opened a map of the Pacific Ocean and began explaining. "There are currently 3 Carrier Strike Groups from our navy standing by near the East China Sea, and we can immediately deploy them in case of emergency. We are ready to cooperate with your fleet."

//TL;DR- Japuile and Joseon have formed an organization called Eirene, which will welcome anyone and aims to bring together countries that want to act together during the crisis in Japan. There will also be organized naval exercises Japuile and Joseon.

"I may have a way to get you out if I can be patched to Tokyo. I have a few friends in the Defence Ministry who have the ear of the Minister himself. Once the phone lines clear up, hopefully soon, I can try to arrange for your men to be evacuated to your task force out at sea via helicopter or whatever elements." Colonel Uyehara said, "How willing are you to leave some of your equipment behind? If this does happen it has to be before Headquarters starts getting itchy feet. They're starting to suspect everyone by this point no matter who. I can't assure you they won't take drastic action with the temperature turning this high. So speed will be of the essence to get your men out quickly and there's already minimal room for your men."

Said drastic action seemed to be manifesting already. Suddenly above the base, there was the very faint buzz of a jet engine. Barely a speck in the sky, a JASDF AWACs craft began to circle the base for about a minute before suddenly static started blasting through every communications device in the camp. The noise began to fill every frequency in the area.

Outlying scouts of the Merdion camp would begin to signal back reports that the only three roads out of the area now had armed Komatsu LAVs blocking them and unknown JSDF troops starting to disembark from them. At least a hundred of them right now between the three roads but the rumbling of distant engines suggested more incoming.

Legatia wrote:To who it may concern to our friends in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and to Japan as a whole-

Silence. The silence was all Merdion seemed to receive from the Japanese government or the JSDF.

The reason soon became clear.

Minutes after the first scouts spotted the Komatsu LAVs, a Japanese Twitter thread exploded in views and jumped to the front page. Earlier in the day CCTV footage from the Tokyo Station bombing had quietly leaked from an unknown source. The thread belonged to a rather infamous right-wing Japanese individual part of the Uyoku dantai - a term used against Ultranationalist internet trolls - who had recently gained traction thanks to his firey talk show with some of Japan's largest far-right figures by the name of Kazutaka Komori. The thread went on for nearly several hundred words but using enhanced photos claimed to have found the identity of the bomber who was last seen fleeing the scene minutes before the blast. While not using any source, Komori claimed that this man was a Merdion National who had snuck into the country during the recent joining exercise with the JSDF.

Now, there was utterly nothing of substantial evidence behind this and it wasn't even clear the individual in the footage was the bomber.

But something in the equation had changed for Japan.

9 August 1945.

Nearly eighty years since Japan had been assaulted on such a scale in not just one, but two attacks.

Japan was afraid. And so the fearful populace latched onto what answers they could find in this chaos, the one thing that seemed to make sense, even if what they had to latch onto was fearmongering bullshit. All that paranoia, fear, and anger at a world slowly unraveling itself was now starting to bubble up even from the relatively docile and content Japanese middle class.

And it wasn't going to be limited to just Twitter and fringe internet sites. Just half an hour after the thread started to gain traction, Nick Marksby began to hear from fellow Japanese colleges that several major news networks were about to parrot this insanity. Such was the desperation that now even the most reputed news channels might just jump onto it any moment.

And if this conspiracy hit the news tickers for an entire traumatized nation to see...

What the hell would that do?

Meridon Defense Forces
Meridonian Navy, Regiment Marines Commando
1 Marine Amphibious Regiment, 4 Battalion Marine Commando
C Company

-
Somewhere in the Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan -2034H JST, 26DEC22

Ridgely smelled the rat. He wasn't suspicious of the Colonel before him, but he knew something was happening.

The long range radios went first. The Meridonians were not aware that they were being circled, but they could tell something was at work as soon as their communication with their own AEWC went offline. It had become more constant as the situation deteriorated, and it being cut off now was a sure signal of things deteriorating fast.

The operators in the hut with the LCol took their headsets off as static jammed their long-range comms- the only remaining communicators were their short range radios, whose frequencies the JSDF would not be aware of.

"We've got no choice about the stores we left back at your main camp, but we're taking everything we have in the field with us. Commandos pack light;" he winked, recalling an addage from his training days in the wetlands back home in Kalua. But this joking belied the sense of weight falling upon the officers' shouders, knowing that a conflict was soon to come. The fact that they were blocking roads was not a good sign.

"..If you're willing to help us, what you need to do is get that jamming down. We have a task group somewhere off shore that will get us out before your friends here try and nab us. As a disclosure- we don't go out without some shooting, so if you've got lines to your friends my scouts are calling on the road, I'd advise they steer clear. Now Colonel, you're more than welcome to stay with us, or leave as is your pleasure- but we're moving."

Ridgely tugged the shoulder of the nearest radio operator, passing the word of their increasingly precarious situations. The camp had already gone dark, but it wouldn't be surprising if aircraft above were tracking them. A low flying drone they might have a chance of, but were it jet fighters, they would be dead very quickly if Kohina was not reached.

With the roads blocked- the Marines were entirely on foot, anyways- they would move on foot. East, towards the ocean, and towards air support. Static positions were pulled up, and the Marines began to maneuver away from where the enemy knew- or, thought they knew- where they were.Within five minutes, their white forms trudged through the darkness, weapons trained in every direction as they maneuvered to avoid detection before the net closed around them.

Cordelia, Cordelia Federal Territory, Meridon

The first to hear about these conspiracies was not the newscasters or the Meridonian anchorman trying to do his job. Embedded within the Japanese media apparatus was an Abroad Intelligence Service (AIS) agent, their codename Hanako, who had been monitoring the entire situation carefully since its emergence. When she had realized what was about to be broadcast to the entire Japanese public, she had rapidly communicated this information to her handlers, who relayed it to Cordelia within the hour.

From there, it was disseminated across the intelligence community, where it reached the Fleet Intelligence Office of the Meridonian Navy, who had two significant assets deployed in the area. The Defense Staff had been worried about the radio silence- this rumor had all but confirmed their worst fears.

The President, at a conference dinner with youth leadership in Aranui, was pulled from the meeting and briefed. In thirty minutes extra, the order was given.

An urgent IMMEDIATE priority message was relayed to both units- 4 Battalion never received it, but 1 Carrier Task Group did.

As the Marines made their way through the snow, a pair of Backwave electronics warfare aircraft operating on a training sortie close to the Japanese coast picked up the wave of electronic jamming from range..

North Pacific Ocean, approximately 175 miles east of Sendai

A radio crackled across the controlman's headset.

"Darkspear, Lightning 4."

At this time at night, the TAC was lit red. The night watch crew were beginning their shift, but the tension in the room was clear. After the scare from yesterday, they had been alerted to the developing situation that had gone from simply tragic to possibly dangerous. While training missions had not been shelved, the CAP had been doubled- tonight, 2 flights of four Super Lynx fighters circled high above the aircraft carrier silently.

Lightning was the only training mission about at this time, a pair of E6M3 Backwave electronics warfare aircraft operating north of the fleet. The orbiting AEWC, Snowdrift, had detected the launch of an AEWC platform from the Japanese and re-tasked the fighters on a training sortie- who had on board specialist equipment for electronics warfare- to investigate.

The controlman raised a hand to his microphone.

"Lightning 4, Darkspear, go."

"We have airborne electronic jamming activity in the vicinity of Point Sierra, on communications bands. They're jamming long range communications."

"Darkspear, Snowdrift, we concur with Lightning's last. Our radio comm with Lineman is out. They're being jammed."

The TAC Officer rose from his chair immediately to peer over the controlman's shoulder. Overlaid on a digital map of Japan was sensors input and datalink contacts from all of the taskforce's assets. Snowdrift's airborne radar did not reach far enough to cover the area where they currently were, lying a small range beyond where the radar could reach, to determine what type of aircraft was actually doing the jamming.

It was at this time the ticker machine in the room began to loudly print the message from Cordelia. It was ripped almost immediately and rushed to the TACOD by hand. He gripped the document in his hand, the dull red light illuminating the off-white paper as he read.

The man tensed, The gloves were coming off. His hand reached for and fumbled as it found a telephone receiver, the officer clearing his throat as he gave the orders.

"AIR, TAC. Launch the alert fighters." The message was brief, and the man hung the phone before he heard a response.

"Somebody get the skipper on the horn. This is going to be a long night."

--

The still darkness of the glassy Pacific ocean was interrupted by a pair of fighter engines igniting aboard Kohina's flight deck, as another quartet of fighter aircraft began to roar into the sky to join the eight already in air. Snowdrift had ordered a four-ship flight already airborne to skim the Japanese ADIZ and gain radar contact on the airspace above the Marine's fighter group. Their fighters would be a scant 10 miles from penetrating it as their radars would sweep the sky for whatever was flying above the task group.

Beneath the flight deck, crewmen began to arm and ready fighters for additional operations. Some already had weapons from prior missions, but those that did not were quickly rectified.

Things were very quickly spiraling towards danger.

40 miles west of Vladivostok
Solchak Army Base, Manchuria

Colonel Yevgeniy Chekov, commander of the 15th Guards Armored Brigade, watched his brigade train though a pair of binoculars when his communications officer Lieutenant Aleksey Foderov handed him message from St. Petersburg. He read the message which had cause him to frown. Yevgeniy looked at Aleksey with a frown on his face, "Well Alek, we better ready our unit as shit going down in Japan. The Japanese military has decided to overthrow their own government and is quickly heading towards a Second Great Patriotic War." ("Nu, Alek, nam luchshe podgotovit' nashe podrazdeleniye, tak kak v Yaponii tvoritsya der'mo. Yaponskiye voyennyye reshili svergnut' sobstvennoye pravitel'stvo i bystro dvizhutsya ko Vtoroy Velikoy Otechestvennoy voyne.")

Alek facepalms before responding, "Oh you have to be fucking kidding me. After all the shit they did during World War Two, they want to go to war with us again."("O, ty, dolzhno byt', shutish'. Posle vsego der'ma, kotoroye oni sdelali vo vremya Vtoroy mirovoy voyny, oni khotyat snova poyti s nami na voynu.")

Yevgeniy shook his head in amusement at his communications officer's response, "We do as we are told Lieutenant. While war is never fun, sometimes it is needed to prevent more bloodshed." ("My delayem to, chto nam govoryat, leytenant. Khotya voyna nikogda ne byvayet veseloy, inogda ona neobkhodima, chtoby predotvratit' novoye krovoprolitiye.")

The New Russian Federation government remains silent on what is happening in Japan but quietly increases the readiness of the Russian military just in case war does break out. 4 Su-35 fighters and a A-100 AWACS aircraft take off from an air base near Vladivostok and headed east to test the Japanese response to Russian fighters nearing their ADIZ.
History remains the same except Russia remained neutral during WW1, reforms were made so no USSR and Russia controls all Soviet territory plus Manchuria. Now in March 2023, the New Russian Federation has been formed.

Zircorp Institute of Japanese Science, Chiyoda City, Japan

The institute was a stark, brutalist block, an empty concrete monolith overlooking the station plaza. It always seemed out of place, even before the bomb went off. Far from looking like a place of science.

Looks like the attack didn't change much then.
That was a lie.

The Zircorp Institute of Japanese Science's usually cold and grey face was dressed up for Christmas, or as close to "dressed up" as you could get for such an unforgiving construct. There were lights on the lobby roof and a small Christmas tree inside. They even had a special event for the holidays, where children could go in and learn about the science behind Christmas! It seemed like it would just be random facts over stock images of "Christmastime" but it was actually more than that, and very popular too.

There was a near-blinding flash, followed by a blast of air that shattered all of the glass in the building. Hundreds were dead outside, and many more were injured. A truck bomb apparently, although nobody really cared what kind of bomb it was. It was clearly an orchestrated terrorist attack, although nobody really cared about that either. The government believed the person responsible was "Far-left" but again, nobody cared.

Zircorp did though.
They cared a lot.

Luis Gustavo Almeida and his assistant sit at a table in a blastproof room. Assistant places a file on the table and Luis reads it.
A:"Damage report. From the blast? Apparently some of the corpses were found on the skybridges. 15 in total died in the Institute."
L:"Christ, Hugo."
A:"We haven't entirely ruled out the possibility the attacker was targeting us. The JSDF did say they were far-left, didn't they?"
L:"YHmm. I'm worried. That building was doing crucial research for our GLADIUS Initiative."
A:"I don't know why we're still doing that. They couldn't get it to work in the 80's, they tried again in the 00's and now we're doing it again? I keep trying to convince you to cut funding for it."
L:"Well, you said it yourself, didn't you? There's a possibility that the attacker was attacking Zircorp. Maybe they were trying to destroy GLADIUS."
A:"That's true, I did."
L:"And if they were trying to destroy GLADIUS, then don't we have countermeasures for that?"
A:"Oh no."
L:"What do you mean? This is a chance for the company to finally break out of just being a 'corporation.' This is a great day for us!"
A:"First of all, people died. This isn't something to be excited about. Second, the UN will gut us if they find out what GLADIUS is! And this sounds like you're trying to deploy it."
L:"No, no, no! It's not like that!"
A:"What other reason could you possibly have for military escalation? What will the Marines even do anyway? It's not like you can arrest atoms."
A short pause occurs.
A:"What, are you going to do the Special Assault Team's job for them?"
L:"Precisely. Tell the Director-General that I want a meeting with him. And you're on thin ice. One more word and I could have you fired."
A: *sigh* "Yes, sir."

Naramoto Military Facility, Naramoto, Japan

A chain-link fence surrounds a small military base. There are watchtowers at all 7 corners of the irregular septagonal fence. Inside it, a congregation of prefab buildings huddled around a command centre take up half of the space, while the rest is made up of a small airbase. On the runway, a Lockheed C-130 Hercules, adorned with the Zircorp logo on its wings and fuselage, is parked while 2 Toyota Hiluxes and a squad of Zircorp Marines load into the back. A lone marine, Director-General Pereira, stands near the ATC tower. An assistant runs towards him with some paper.
A:"Sir! This is important!"
P:"Hmm? What is it?"
A:"I don't have time to explain!"
P:"Bullshit! We have half an hour till we leave."
A:"That's the thing. Schedule's been hurried up a bit. Apparently the Russians are going to war, which means we might not have enough time to find the people who planned the attack before they're killed, whether by Russian hands or Japanese."
P:"Why would Japan kill their own agent? Wasn't the attack supposed to be caused by the National Diet?"
A short pause follows. A look of realisation appears on Pereira's face.
P:"Oh yeah, right. Because the JSDF took power."
A:"Are you ok? You look a little pale, and you don't usually forget things like that."
P:"I'm fine. I'm just cold is all."
Pereira moves towards the C-130 and yells at the troops loading into it.
P:"ALRIGHT! I HAVE SOME BAD NEWS! THE COMPANY CHANGED OUR SCHEDULE SO NOW YOU NEED TO LOAD YOUR SHIT IN FASTER!"

Kalingrad City - Fort Kalinka - Ministry of International Communications Building

Theme

Small chandeliers brightly illuminate an old yet glamorous hallway as two polished black shoes clatter over the hall's red carpet. The man is wearing a uniformed suit, topped with the party badge on his chest. He walked in an elegant manner, keeping his posture straight and his arms swinging in unison with his walk. The man is none other than the Commissar of the Ministry of International Communications (MIC) himself, Stevreschka Osch, regarded as having one of the most important elected positions of the Party. He looks simple yet refined, as he continues walking and checking on the furnishings, admiring their elegant rustic charm. Indeed, the MIC Building used to be a gun powder magazine for the fort, before being transformed into a MIC headquarters after the Janpian Union established itself. As Commissar Stevreschka reached his office, he gently opened the door and swinged it open, only to be greeted by Sarina, the secretary of the People's Marshal. He maintained his hands on the door knob, partially looking at the Secretary and half of his office.

Commissar Stevreschka:"I believe this matter must be something important?"

He said in a calm and formal tone, clearly putting their respectful positions in manners, noting that she is under the People's Marshal. His hands are still on top of the door knob, not fully swinging the door open.

Secretary Sarina:"The Office of the People's Marshal would like in regards, for you to look into an important manner at Tokyo"

Commissar Stevreschka:"Tokyo? We are still focused on the current Boldonian Crisis, yet--"

As he continues on speaking, he swung the door open, only to see the People's Marshal herself infront of him. Though she is rather short of course, with a very small height of 4'5 as compared to him standing at 5'6. She is dressed in a red uniform, looking up with a faceless, yet childish emotion.

Commissar Stevreschka:"--A-ahh.. I-I see. So it is really this important that PM Natya have to see me myself..."

The Commissar maintained his cool, as he grasps a bit of air, only for her secretary to answer

Secretary Sarina:"Indeed. What do you think I am? Whenever the People's Marshal go, I'm always there... That is to be expected.."

A warm wallow of guilt falls on to the Commissar, as his pride gets slightly damaged from her words. He closed the door behind him, and readjusted his suit. PM Natya simply look in curiosity, not understanding what's going on at the room. A short awkward silence follows, only breaking as the Secretary speaks up again

Secretary Sarina:"Anywho, I am sure that you are aware of the recent explosion at Tokyo? Now, a simple message from this ministry would suffice. But I'd reckon that there must be an action done for the Party, nay, the Revolution's advantage."

Commissar Stevreschka:"That is the directive of the People's Marshal herself right..?"

Both of them looked on to the People's Marshal, only to see her gone from her former position. Instead, they saw her flopping down the chair, with her head near the floor and her shoes up high the seat's cresting rail.

Commissar Stevreschka:"I'll take that as a yes. Though by actions, what should it be?"

Before the secretary could answer, the People's Marshal answered, remaining in her upside down position.

PM Natya:"A people's revolt of course! ... or was it .... no ... freedom of navigations? Yea... that one. We need an intelligence report first"

Secretary Sarina:"Y-yeah as the People's Marshal said, we have to secure our national interests in the country through Revolutionary action. Though we have yet to consult the Revolutionary Council for any feasibility on to such. But in due regards, contact the Japanese government and our embassy to forward our concerns. Though it would also be nice to have the Party to publicly support the ongoing worker's unrests."

Commissar Stevreschka:"Aye. I can set it up immediately. Just asking though, was this already consulted during the Union of Party Members Committee (UPMC) session? And a bit of curiosity, shouldn't JURIC be the one in charged on intelligence matters? Seems weird to immediately result on to sending our warships with the lack of structural intel as to what is going on in there."

Secretary Sarina:"Nay. This wasn't consulted to the UPMC. Take this as an executive action from the Office of the People's Marshal instead. As for the intelligence part, as I've said, we are still yet to consult the Revolutionary Council"

Commissar Stevreschka:"Understood"

With both of them understanding their directives, they both bowed down, as the Commissar opened the door for them and smilingly guided their way out.

Secretary Sarina:"Natya come here, its time to go! There's an ice cream at the MIC cafeteria! We also have a meeting with the RevCon later!"

Natya's face grew in excitement, as she immediately slid down to bump her head, standing up, and went out of the office room led by her secretary. As she gets out, the Secretary looks back at the Commissar

Secretary Sarina:"We'll leave this to you then! Pleasant for a small meeting!"

Saying this, she moved out of the room, leaving the Commissar alone once again. He closed the door and lets out a big heavy sigh.

Commissar Stevreschka:"Now to commission someone..."

Ministry of International Communications

Under the Office of the People's Marshal, the Janpian Union of Government Worker's Party, the sole vanguard representation of the Janpian Union of Revolutionary States, has stated its concern to the growing unrest on to the Japanese state, following the recent explosion at the Tokyo Station. As such, the Revolutionary States condemns the unlawful killing of civilians in this plainly unjustified act of terrorism, and we solemnly stand with the fallen victims of this attack. Within this note, the Ministry of International Communications has set any necessary measures and directions to assure the safety of any party members currently living in Japan. We would also like to advise every Janpian party member to follow the instructions of local authorities for their own safety and to exercise caution when in public spaces. Furthermore, we would also recommend to any party members currently residing in Japan to evacuate to the nearest Janpian embassy for their repatriation, with all necessary documents or requirements laid out on our website. Following the said directive, a warning travel notice is also issued for anyone travelling to any Japanese states, with heavy imposition to anyone travelling to the Kanto region.

However, as an internationalist vanguard of socialism, the Janpian Union of Revolutionary States also recognizes the growing unrest in Japan, which our Ministry believes is the root of the aforementioned terrorist act. As such, the Janpian Union of Government Workers' Party would also like to proclaim its critical support for the growing agonizing conditions of the workers, which has been noted for their worsening treatments from the state. This has been evidenced by their recent acts that curtails the freedom of the people, along with their ineffective deliveries brought from a failed system known as capitalism. It has been noted that the economic downturn of 2020 was a direct result of luck and assumption, which brought the current political instability and exposing the weaknesses of the capitalist economic system, resulting in to a society where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. With this divide between social classes growing larger, the ugly face of capitalism began to make its face clear for everyone: It is a system which favors luck and greed, with commodities made by the workers under the control of monetary value held by the stock market.

With such conclusions drawn by the Ministry, the Janpian Union only sees one possible solution for the said problem. And that is, to unionize the workforce and a install a new democratic government with the authority of the people at the helm. Within such rights that the workers must also take their labor production and set their bonds free from the unrest. Furthermore, we would like to notify or warn that such production will also be held by the military or the government, as clearly evidenced by the growing support for Martial law at the national diet.

Onwards for the Revolution!

Naramoto Military Facility, Naramoto, Japan[/align]
Background music
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules took off from the runway in a normal, if flashy and short, fashion. The Hercules is famous for its ability to take off from runways that not even planes half its size can use, which is handy because the Naramoto Military Facility is quite small.
The immense plane's shadow shifted as the plane itself glided unopposed directly towards Yokohama. Near Hatsushima, a pair of Mitsubishi F-2B fighters began to follow the Hercules from a close distance, acting almost like escorts. They had the roundel of the JASDF and displayed the insignia of the 7th Air Wing. A third F-2B flew in shortly after and the pilot nodded at the Hercules's flight crew, before taking position below and forwards of the plane's nose. As the group of planes passed over Kamakura, the fighters broke off. The transporter passed over the E16 highway, which seemed to be a sort of border of some sort, because as soon as it did so, the F-2Bs from before fired at the plane's wings and cargo door.
As the enormous plane tumbled out of the sky, the marines inside unbuckled their seatbelts and got sucked out of a hole in the door, deploying their parachutes shortly after. The Director-General's chute had gotten tangled up with another marine's, but they landed in a tree and were... mostly unharmed. High above they could see the three fighters flying away, as if mocking the survivors. Wether the planes were actually Japanese or if this was a false flag operation is unknown.

P:"What happened?"
M:"I... I don't know sir! We were shot down?"
P:"I know, I'm not dead, I can see that. I mean how are we still alive?"
M:"We both had chutes? We landed in a tree"
P:"Hmph. I thought Japan wasn't trying to kill us, what the hell? What did we do?"
M:"Maybe they don't like foreign troops on their soil? We are technically foreign, even if I was born and raised here. Zircorp is a Brazilian company. Maybe they're viewing it as an invasion?"
P:"Whatever. How are we meant to get down? Do you have a combat knife?"
M:"Yes, just let me-"
Before he could finish, a Mitsubishi UH-60J passed low and fast overhead, before stopping and hovering nearby.
P:"What the hell? What are they doing, looking for corpses or something?"
M:"Maybe. That's the search-and-rescue version though, maybe they want to save civilians injured by the crash."
P:"Judging by their recent actions, I doubt the JSDF want to save anyone. Well, other than themselves."
M:"I don't know, it's possible."
The UH-60J then picked up 3 people, 2 civilians and 1 marine, and flew away towards the wreckage itself.

Captain's Quarters

The coffee never tasted good enough. The beans were either too burnt or too damn undercooked. Who could complain, coffee is better than nothing. Captain Jones walked out of his quarters and journeyed over to the command center. The bridge was clamored with officers shuffling about. Consoles were firing off bits and pieces of intel, simply not enough for one to analyze. Reports arrived from home, a coup in Japan. It was the reason they were out on the icy Pacific today. Japan is under new management, he had said before. New boss, same as the old. But the new boss thought differently and operated differently. The high chairs in every diplomatic office don't like it when leaders think differently. But the approach given to the fleet was quite... aggressive. Maraguez, being quite left out when it came to controlling the Pacific, rarely ever enjoyed being able to showcase its power. Seeing as though a world power in the Pacific is having its own problems, the chairs at home practically jumped on the chance to provide military assistance against a rebellious force. Jones never got into details about the grumpy men at home though. The way he saw it, a world power needs help, and cooperation may lead to a gracious reward; perhaps retirement is here.

The goal is simple, get in contact with any remaining friendlies, and establish vital naval and air military assistance. Easier said than done, who could be trusted? It was impossible to send out a broadcast without releasing classified intel or risking cooperating with the wrong team. News of a catastrophe at the Yokohama Bay Bridge was already known, which made it clear Japan's airforce was not to be trusted, which meant most likely that the navy couldn't be trusted either. Heavy precaution needs to be taken.

Klaxons fired off from consoles. A reminder for the fleet, they had just entered the knowledgeable range of long-range missiles. The alert died after a few seconds. The officers continued their shuffle, with a little more pace. They were no longer within their comfort zone.

Flight Deck

The air was cold. The strong wind only biting his legs only made things worse. Orders from the bridge called for a small patrol. His squadron was of course called upon. He heard a familiar voice behind him, "You alright, Lieutenant?" He turned around to see it was one of the flight deck workers. "I'm fine. It's just another day." He smiled at him. "You said it Lieutenant."

Over the Pacific Sea
300 kilometers off the east coast of Tokyo
Patrol Flight

The MJ-1A's twin turbofan engines rumbled smoothly alongside the other three fighters. They cruised at an altitude of fewer than 10 kilometers, to get a good look at the air above while keeping eyes on the sea. Nothing has been spotted so far. "Well, this seems a bit boring." The plane's active radar wasn't picking up anything bad, which, while it wasn't exactly good, wasn't exactly bad either. "Why do you think we're even here in the first place?" "Because the boss said so. I don't ask questions, I just do my damn job." "But what is our job? So some military just turns on its people. What does that have to do with us?" A worthy thought, but it wasn't exactly right. "Ever think that if people hear about some crackpot military men turning, other people would get the same idea?" "I don't know man, I just wanna get back home." "As soon as the job's done."

Mess Hall

Shit was never supposed to happen, but it always does. That's what she was thinking when she wandered into the mess hall. She wasn't happy at the idea of being stuck on a ship for time here. She wasn't happy to be in the mess hall. In fact, she wasn't happy when the infantile boys sitting at one of the tables wolf-whistled her. She shot daggers at them and they quickly turned away. The line at the mess hall was mostly gone, but that was because she was late. The food would be a little cold, but not too cold. She picked up a tray of food and wandered over to an empty table. She sat comfortably, as comfortably as the metal table would let her sit, and began eating. Halfway through her meal, she was interrupted by a Seaman, who came to sit at the table in front of her, "I didn't know we'd be shipping off with heli pilots." She looked up from her food surprised, looking at the Seaman with a confused face. "How did you know I was a heli pilot?" He pointed at her arm, "I noticed the tattoo." The tattoo he was referring to was a skull with a hammer, and an inscription saying, Give 'em Hell. "How did you know about this tattoo?" "I had a brother in the airforce, he flew helis while I was in school. Same tattoo. He would always say, "Crush 'em hard, -" She finished the saying, "And Give 'em Hell." She took a liking to the Seaman, "What's your name, Seaman?" "John. You?" "Anne, Ensign." "Oh shit, sorry Ma'am." "It's fine Seaman, I'm not up for professionalism right now."

Her bunk was small, but it was comfortable enough to sleep in. Hopefully, she could get some rest until she could do something useful. It was all confusing to her. She'd heard the stories of Japan in the war. A sad story really. Having helped the allies in WW1, it was expecting at least some type of compensation for providing assistance in the Pacific. Yet in Versailles, it was all but forgotten. Combined with terrible timing, and the introduction of a new imperial thinking, Japan felt no other choice but to expand. The embargo of oil further forced it to expand. It was only downhill from Pearl Harbor. And now this... She heard a saying once, "Loose lips sink ships." She never knew what exactly it meant, but to her, being on a ship meant hoping it didn't sink. Any slip-up and we could be hit by a missile. She heard of the tenacity of Japanese soldiers. Defeat was impossible for them. God I hope there's no loose lips...
