Golansky, Fixturn – Following two weeks of discussions, debates, and votes, Ostaja's first Council of Governors has adjourned with two new Constitutional amendments: one authorizing a massive influx of representation in the Federal Senate, and another enshrining the freedom of the press.
The Congress, hosted in Fixturn's capitol of Golansky (formerly Coty), was initially called after weeks of peaceful protests across the nation opposed what has been perceived as too little representation in the Federal legislative body. The Senate, currently holding 97 seats, has been cast as unable to fully represent all 234 million citizens in the country. The push to enlarge the Senate comes from citizens of most political parties, typically grouped in provinces who are represented by an opposing Senator. The need became most apparent in late February, when Fixturn increased the number of seats in its legislative house to 103, despite being one of the smaller states in the Federal Republic.
Should this amendment pass the Senate, President John Carl Michaels, a politically neutral official by Constitutional mandate, will convene a committee to determine just how to implement the measures before the June elections. While no details can be officially offered before passage of the amendment, most in the political sphere are confident of the amendment's approval, and a member of the President's staff, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that a plan will likely be offered in early April.
Other matters were discussed at the Congress, including concerns over freedom of the press. Initially, the Constitutional Commission argued that Ostaja's Article V rights, which include freedom of speech, assembly, and petition, were enough to protect the press, should the government attempt to influence it. However, it has become apparent that the representatives at the Congress disagreed, hence the passage of the amendment.
Some matters garnered some serious support but failed to be returned to the required five out of seven state legislatures. These include, but aren't limited to, protection of gun rights for Ostaji citizens and a national term limit amendment for Senators.
Chancellor Ryan called a special session of the Senate for later today to vote on the amendments. In an official statement, she shared her support for the two amendments in the hopes of ensuring public representation and transparency of governing through the free press and media.
