I updated the character roster. CSR has reserved the Governor of NY position.

Also, as an announcement, I will be placing a soft cap on Senators, since we have a fair number of them but no Representatives. I will be willing to accept Senators if someone had mentioned writing an app about a Senator before this new rule and exceptional applications, but until we get at least two-three representatives I will be reluctant to accept more Senators.

Character Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Newne Carriebean7
Character Name: Welles Augustine Fletcher
Character Gender: Old Dude
Character Age: 74
Character Height: 6'2
Character Weight: 141 pounds
Character Position/Role/Job:
11th Governor of Arizona
(Since January 3, 1959)
Apache County Sheriff
(January 14, 1926- January 14, 1933)
(January 12, 1950- December 30, 1958)
Portraying Sheriff William "Wild Bill" August Clemson in the radio program "Sheriff!"
(February 3, 1942 - December 26, 1945)
Appearance: (Photo required) Don Knotts
Character State of Origin: Missouri
Character State of Residence: Arizona
Character Party Affiliation: Republican (Democratic until 1924)
Main Strengths:
Cowboy Image- Welles Fletcher often cultivates his origins as a ranch handler, and uses his 'rough and ready' image to try and, if not entertain those that come to his rallies, at least ensure that they vote for him. A Fletcher campaign rally is infamous for his copious amounts of alcohol and the tirade laden speeches Fletcher's supporters give to him throughout his time as Sheriff for Apache County, a tradition he has carried on during his time running for Governor of Arizona.

Savior of the White Man- Self-proclaimed title, his actions as sheriff clearly dedicate his undying commitment to the american caucasian in his opinion, and he had numerous cases of questionable morals and actions throughout his time as Sheriff, including showing prefferential treatment to White prisoners and often assigning Latino or Black prisoners longer prison sentences unillaterally as his authority as a keeper of the peace.

Declaration of Populism- In breaking with most political norms, Welles Fletcher has rejected almost all major party donations in favor of smaller ones, even if he has to go to 'questionable' lengths that are still 'within' the limit of the law to ensure what small political machine he wields is weld in a blunt or stiff manner for the Governor's friends who play billards with him and serve as a political clique. On the outside, he tries his best at connecting with the average voter, often relaying the exact same stories about how he's cleaned up the streets of Yuma County and he's doing the same thing across the entire state to 'enemies of the regime'. Comments which have only drawn more controversy for the Arizonan politican.
Main Weaknesses:

Brash and Crude- Fletcher's not the most classy individual when it comes to large social gatherings, and he's more likely to turn whatever speech he gives to a tirade against whatever enemy comes his way.

Broken relations with the Establishment- The only thing the Governor has in common with President Johnathan Kacklson is their party affiliation and that they're both old men. Outside of that, if you didn't know his party affiliation, you'd pass him by in the street as another angry Democrat.

Narrow Mandate- Winning by less than 150 votes out of 300,000 cast doesn't exactaly give you a wide mandate to rule in normal circumstances, but Fletcher refuses to listen to criticism or constructive thought, instead relying on the friends, lackies and general yes-men he plays Billards with for most political advice, ill-advised as it might be.

Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)
Born April 24, 1884 to Cornelius Crawford Fletcher (1863-present) and Rachel Morgan Deborah (1858-1914) in Crawford county, Missouri, Fletcher's early life regarded fond memories of picking cherries for a local farmer that had always helped out his parents in times of need. Cornelius "Chip" Crawford was well known as a master financial wizard and was involved in local Missouri politics for quite some time. Although Chip seemed to be grooming Fletcher's older brother, Lyman for a possible role as County Clerk, a freak harvesting accident in 1903 put a damper on that political plan. Lifelong Democrats, the Fletcher family took their horse and buggy all the way to St. Louis to see the 1904 Democratic National Convention, where Welles got a first hand look at all sorts of political machinery. To their disappointment, Fellow Missourian Senator Francis Crockwell came in third place upon the start of balloting.

In 1908, without even telling his wife, Crawford packed up everything in the house and bluntly stated they were going on a "trip". Rachel was understandably pissed at this, but a mellow personality refused her the backbone to stand up to the irratic action, so she meekley accompanied him and the rest of the family out of Missouri to the Indian Territory. Welles decided he's had enough of his father's bumbling mistakes and leaves in dead of night a few months after they arrived in Oklahoma. His life on his own was probably one of the most dangerous times of his life, forcing him to get out of the house.

Being drawn to the City of Phionex, Arizona, he arrived there a couple months after being on his own. First getting a job the next year as a local secretary for a law firm, he enjoyed his time at the law firm until deciding to finish up some sort of education four years later. The Year after the Titanic hit Ice, he applied for the local university, but was rejected. Deciding to give up on any sort of formal-education, Welles decided to go into farming instead. Buying some land in Cottonwood, he's remained there ever since. Investing with a local friend into the success of his farm, he enjoyed large wheat and cattle crops for a long time.

For the next twenty years, he kept up on local gossip, politics and maintained his farmstead with pride. However, in 1922 some farming friends argued he ought to run for County Sheriff. He soon geared up for a vicious campaign, but was generally suprised at the general apathey that many had throughout Yuma County, although he ended up losing to the incumbent by a 6 point margin.

Content with his little political experiment, Welles refused to contemplate another run for public office...until another group of farming neighbors finally convinced the man to run three years later. His political campaign was a modest one, proclaiming him to keep farmers safe in his local community, and vowed an increase in general spending for the county government. He took advantage of more attention in the local race owing to a band of gangsters that had plagued Yuma County. Promising to modernize the police force, increase the jail size and county court house to have multiple trials, he won on an anti-crime message against the incumbent office holder.

Taking office as the sheriff of Apache County in 1927, his first year was met by general stonewalling by the state government, led by Democratic governor George W.P. Hunt. Getting along much better with the brief return of a Republican in Phoenix, he had then been blocked in getting his more "racially charged" ideas through the mainstream Arizonan Party. However, his department or staff never suffered a pay cut despite the Depression's impact on the State, although for a solid while he did have to supplement lowered department income by donating his salary and working without one from 1929 to 1932. Eventually, even Hoover's monumental loss to FDR in Arizona even unseated his job as sheriff, leaving him as just another one of the millions of unemployed Americans.

He went back to farming for a number of years, and from December 8, 1941 until the end of the war he agreed travel to California in order to do several small radio broadcasts on wild western shows, usually with some message of backing the American war effort. The culmination of several small radio gigs was his stardom role in the series "Sheriff!"He dressed himself up in Cowboy attire and signed a deal with NBC to star in the radio program "Sheriff!", mostly based on adaptations of various encounters and events that he had undertaken whilst serving as Apache County Sheriff for many Years. The show would run from 1942 until 1945, with 489 episodes being made in that time. Gradual contention with the studio over creative liberties with respect to episodic directions and a concern that he would be jipped from his paychecks prompted him to leave on sour terms in NBC following the end of WWII in the Pacific.

Although he initially welcomed the election of President Johnathan Jackson over Harry S. Truman, he quickly broke with him over a disagreement with Interference in State's Rights penning several letters in the local newspaper that slandered and slammed the commander in chief for, among other things: 'an absence of mental faculties' and a 'worrying cognitive decline throughout his newest endeavor'. He has borrowed a term from South Carolina Senator Ellison D. Smith about the election of FDR and coined the Jackson presidency as an "era of jackasses and dumbasses."

Taking his old job as Sheriff of Apache County back from the incumbent in 1949 (following a surprise upset that corresponded with Carry S. Hammond's performance in Arizona over Issac E. Flowers), he began to plan for a statewide campaign. Welles sent out numerous flyers and papers that proclaimed him as the 'candidate that WILL keep Y'all safe'. He lambasted large scale government corruption and began to make phone calls to see which conservatives might support him.

He didn't get a whole lot of help in a prospective 1956 gubernatorial run when testing the waters of national Arizonan politics and so opted to ignore goading calls by Democrats to run as the GOP nominee. Unsurprisingly, his wisdom was proven correct when the incumbent Democrat of (not Ernest McFarland) defeated (not Horace B.Griffin) by a wide margin. The tidal wave of Democratic success was so sweeping that he only narrowly held on to his position in Yuma in '56.

Two years later, Welles decided to mount a run for Governor. He ran on an anti-crime and anti-mormon message, which alienated a significant portion of Arizona's Mormon population, but brought in some more fundamentalist christian groups which disliked certain mormon groups for their practices of polygamy, which became an issue following a raid by the incumbent governor that broke up hundreds of Mormon families. This hurt both the Incumbent Democratic Governor and Welles's candidacy, although in the end Welles didn't lose quite enough support from voters to end up winning the election by a narrow, razor thin margin of 0.35% of 301,000 votes cast.

He has seen his office as a mix of helping the people of the state and attacking the president. In his weekly radio addresses he frequently slams President Johnathan Jackson as an 'enemy of the people of Arizona', 'crook' and 'lying, cheating, no good-' and even barred him from his gubernatorial inauguration (not that he'd want to go anyhow). Although he went through a honeymoon phase with the legislature, this quickly turned into the definition of an abusive marriage and divorce, as Welles frequently targets the "sit on their ass" state congress with "every failure known to arizona". This is in spite of some failures falling on the shoulders of the governor's office, to which he readily prepares and purges a political lackey that had talked shit about him or fallen out of favor with Welles.

As a result, his relationship is incredibly tense and strained with the legislative branch, so he opts to utilize executive orders to work around "do nothin' guber-nance" as he decries it. Welles has vowed to veto whatever educational proposals and will not support a nickle's worth of the bare minimum for skoolin'. He justifies this by saying that he's not completely cutting funding to county school districts, but in his words "just one knee-caping the education system." He's very much for the bare minimum of schooling, and vetoed a bill that would increase funding for schooling. This completely torpedoed a behind the scenes compromise that had been a in the works set in place after a few weeks worth of negotiation between Welle's informal "Billard Clique" and both house and senate party leaders, much to their enraged chagrin.

Already there are rumors that Welle's billiard clique lackies are inadequate in staving off their inevitable political obliteration by 1960, and those both within the Democratic and Republican party are angling, scheming, plotting their rise up the totem poll of political power, even if they have to stab Welles in the back to do it. A few months into his tenure, and the sharks are already smelling blood. Can Welles pull off an upset like he did in '58 or will he end up a one term governor?

Other Info:
Although Welles originally affiliated himself with the Democratic Party while in Missouri (Voting for Woodrow Wilson and James Cox both in 1916 and 1920 respectively) and for some time in Arizona, he changed his party affiliation in 1924 to Republican in a fever of Coolidge "limited government" fanboyism.

Owns a collection of "Sheriff!" memorabilia estimated to be worth $3,000 dollars, stealing it from the NBC studios as an act of spite upon the cancellation of his syndicated radio program in 1945.

In 1932, he was unsatisfied with Hoover and so voted in FDR, although came to regret his decision throughout the man's first term, and has been a straight ticket Republican voter since Alf Landon's suicide run in 1936.

Owns a 21 acre-ranch in Cottonwood, Arizona.
Currently married to 80 year old Nessie Phelps of Burnside, Arizona.

With his views, he will have a tough road ahead. The best case scenario for him is that Dems and GOP nominate liberals and no sitting Dixiecrat decides to go for a third-party run, so he can carry the South and become potentially a kingmaker in case no one wins the electoral college.

Well, if either Huey Long expy or George McGovern expy win the Democratic nomination, an some Rockefeller expy wins the Republican, he has a slight chance. Though the Long expy could probably carry much of the south no difficulty.

Depends on the compromises they might have to make to keep moderate Dixiecrats in line, but yes, a Southern candidate for the Dems will help them in the South.

Mhm. If someone as ruthlessly charismatic as Long wins, or as classically southen as LBJ, then the Dixiecrats will win about 2 states, whilst the Democrats basically sweep the nation. Sparks just risks alienating the North and California waaaaaay too much.

Depends on the GOP candidate as well. The war in Africa is becoming unpopular but the economy has been growing and Republicans get credit for that. So it really depends on the candidates if Dems or GOP win.

BTW, what is the position of your character on the war in Africa?

He's an Isolationist on trade. Likely for pulling out, but still sending some support. He's a populist, he goes where the wind blows.

That could potentially be a popular position. Pulling out could help him win anti-war crowd but still sending support could him calm fears by the pro-war crowd.

Debating to have Joyner run for governorship in the Dixiecrat states first to build his political base or attempt to go straight into presidential campaigning on the State's Rights ticket

I'm going to be honest with you and say that winning the White House is out of the question and even getting kingmaker position due to the electoral college is kinda a long shot, so it might be better to run for governor for a Southern state. You are far more likely to win (especially if you run as a Democrat) and actually exercise power IC. Assuming the RP survives that long, perhaps you can then go for a presidential run in 1964.

Coincidentally, I started writing one about a representative after I wrote my first one, I’ll get it done in an hour or two probably

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: The Central Federation
Character Name: Alexander Kane
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 50
Character Date of Birth: December 29, 1909
Character Position/Role/Job:

-Mayor of Houston (1940-1946)
-US Representative from Texas 18th District (1946-incumbent)

Character Country/State of Birth: In the state of New Jersey
Character State of Residence: Houston, Texas
Character Party Affiliation: Democrat
Faceclaim: Himself
Main Strengths:

-Expirience: Having been in multiple different public offices, he has a variety of political experience that helps him be credible.

-Plays the game: Will do whatever he needs to do to get ahead in the political game so he can make a difference.

-A Great Compromiser: Is willing to make any compromise he needs to, as evidenced by the compromises he’s made with the progressives of Texas.

Main Weaknesses:

-Secrets: Not much is known about his past or family before adoption. He is very secretive of his personal life.

-Alcoholism: He is addicted to alcohol, and drinks a lot of it every day. Due to this he often is hungover after he goes on a break for any decently long period of time.

-Discriminator: Despite him appearing to be moderately supportive of rights for most people, he is against civil rights for non-whites.

Biography: Kane was born December 29, 1909, and was immediately put into an orphanage in New Jersey, where he was adopted by businessman Aaron Kane in 1919. There, his adoptive father taught him how to compromise, which would be a very important part of his political career, and enrolled him in a private school in Princeton, New Jersey. Everyone around him was reportedly very conservative.

In 1932, 2 years after he graduated from high school, Kane got accepted into the University of Houston, and studied law there. During that time he met lawyer John Smith, who took Kane under his wing. He became a lawyer working with Smith in 1938. Turning out to be an outstanding lawyer and compromiser, Smith suggested he try to run for Mayor of Houston, as he would do good in this divided city.

He won the election by less than 500 votes, but was by far the most popular mayor to that point, being re-elected with the 74% vote. In 1946 he attempted to run for the House of Representatives, and once again won (this time by a closer margin) over his fellow Democrat, Eugene Worley.

Now, after 14 years in the House of Representatives, Kane is aspiring to become President of the United States.

Other Info:

Kane is very deep into religion. He has never been seen in a relationship.

Think i'm gonna go for a 3rd and final character, a US Representative. Might for a hard-line Republican this time.

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: The Rio Grande River Basin
Character Name: George Graythorpe
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 40, soon to be 41
Character Date of Birth: 1919
Character Position/Role/Job:

USAAF Lieutenant, Bomber Pilot (1940-1946)
US representative for the 4th District of Illinois (1948-1956)
Governor of Illinois (1956-present)

Character Country/State of Birth: Illinois
Character State of Residence: Illinois
Character Party Affiliation: Republican
Faceclaim: JFK and George McGovern, combined with Mike Gravel
Main Strengths:

Hellraiser. Known for fiery anti-establishment speeches, hammering home his points on inequality. Prides himself on ethics, but if a scandal strikes his opponent, he’ll let ‘em have it with both barrels.

War Hero. Flew B-25s, and won’t hesitate to tell you about it, and his Purple Heart. Was injured on a bombing run over Okinawa, and daringly escaped during the night.

Charismatic populist. Popular amongst the left, detested by the right. He’ll tell people what they want to hear, and he’ll tell it in a way to charm a snake.

Main Weaknesses:

Establishment? What establishment?. Burned all those bridges long ago.

Screw the rules, I have ethics!. Follows through on what he thinks, sometimes a little too hard.

Unstoppable force, meet, immovable object. Very used to getting his way, and won’t hesitate to try and ram through powerful people.

Biography: Born in 1919 to a greengrocer, and a local entrepreneur, both staunch reformist republicans, George Graythorpe showed promise from a young age. Intellectually gifted, and top grades in school, he became a school president, and debate team captain, as well as learning how to fly in an Aeronca aircraft, receiving a license through the “Civilian Pilot Training Program”. At 21, after abruptly finishing his degrees, he headed off to war. He became a bomber pilot, who earned a medal for escaping a Japanese POW camp, whilst wounded, winning the Purple Heart medal for his efforts.

Upon return, he almost immediately began a political career, raising hell against the establishment, and easily taking an upset victory in the primary, facing State Senator Harold O. Lowe, despite running a low budget campaign, he appealed to the voters, going door to door, as many suffered from Jackson’s union policies. As it appears he was winning, spurious allegations of being a fascist sympathiser were thrown at him, for having supported Henry A. Wallace. Entering congress, he became a member of the House Committee on Labour Relations, as a rabidly pro-union member. In his 2nd re-election, he once again faced a challenge against WW2 Medal of Honor Recipient Joan Fuss, who was seen as the inevitable winner, but after showcasing his firm beliefs, once again won a dark horse victory.

After 8 long years, he turned his eyes to the governorship, held by a retiring democrat. Despite his easy victory in the primaries, his opponent seemed insurmountable, leading him by 20 points, but with vigorous campaigning, and his opponent’s inaction, he seized victory by a mere few hundred votes. His first action was to audit the states expenditures, then immediately beginning a slim down of the civil service, whilst increasing taxes, and introducing a massive welfare increase, Social Security, Universal Healthcare, and a resolution to the slight budget deficit. He also organised a conference on Union issues with the governors of Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio. By his second election, he had the backing of the Democrats.
Now, he stands as the youngest governor, and a damn effective one at that. He has no ties with the establishment, or business, but he’s already made clear what job he wants now. Representative Judy Cheshire of New York has already said that she’d be open to running with him, but if she wants to, well, let’s say her ethnicity and gender aren’t helping her.

He would run on an openly pacifist and rabidly pro-union left wing stance, with progressive civil rights including legalising marijuana and abortion federally, hoping to come in as a dark horse, seizing the North and the Union states, and possibly California, sacrificing the South, to toss him into the election. He realises that all of the possible republicans are fascist or racist, and maybe a liberal option is what they need. He doesn’t believe he’ll win, at least not against the expected Democrat candidates, all with equal parts charisma, populism, connections and power, but he is running to make a point. And hey? Who knows. America might just come home.
