SE Turkey Quake

Postby Senkaku » Mon Feb 06, 2023 2:42 am

Not sure if this needs its own thread or if there’s an inactive Turkey megathread somewhere, will leave to mods to judge.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey a couple hours ago, heard some initial reports on it on the BBC’s evening radio service that NPR carries as I was coming home from work. Further reporting indicates the scale of damage is indeed massive— cities from Antakya & Adana all the way to Diyarbakir are reporting thousands of collapsed buildings, and the death toll appears to likely be in the thousands (the last figure I saw was already over a thousand, and I don’t feel the need to give updates every time that’s revised upwards as it surely will be). There also appears to have been extensive damage inside already-wartorn northern Syria, and the disaster will be complicated by the harsh winter weather much of this region is experiencing.

I’m sure everyone’s thoughts are with the thousands still trapped in the rubble and the rescuers working to save them. This looks set to be one of the worst earthquakes in recent memory, up there with Haiti and Sichuan, in terms of humanitarian impact (mercifully it doesn’t appear to have generated any Mediterranean tsunamis). Presumably the death toll will rise over the next few days and then stabilize, and Turkey will present estimates of damages— by way of discussion, what will this mean for Turkey & Syria? What will this mean for the Erdogan government and the AKP, for the Turkish economy? Will there be any effect on the Assad regime or other Syrian forces? Given Turkey’s pivotal role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, should we expect Ankara to make diplomatic concessions to either side in exchange for aid?

It’s obviously too soon to say yet how rescue and relief efforts are going, but I’d just note that major disasters like this can be moments of great opportunity or great danger for authoritarian governments, depending on how their relief effort performs and is perceived by the public. On a personal note, being from the PNW, I worry that the horrific scenes now coming out of Gaziantep and other cities will be a grim prologue (from a U.S. perspective) for the eventual next slip of the Cascadia subduction zone off the US Pacific coast, as we’ve spent decades building up urban areas full of structures that we know can’t withstand the expected strength of that looming disaster.

It’s terrible what’s happened. I’ve seen pictures of a few destroyed houses. I’m thankful to not have any direct friends or family living there, but I know a friend’s friend who’s been sitting outside for 6 hours in the snow.

Political Islam still continues to kill our people. It is predetermined scientific principles, not mythological hopes, that save lives. Their so-called religious brothers did not make statements as quickly as Armenia and Greece. Those who want to look for real friends will look at the Balkans and the Caucasus, not the Arab countries. This could possibly be even worse than the 1988 Armenia Earthquake.

It even affected cities as far as Beirut. Italy is expecting tsunamis.

What I have seen so far of footage is absolutly devastating and heart breaking.

political Islamists absurdly accuse the US country. They're really open to believing these people's conspiracy theories, just like the mythology they believe in.

As much as I dislike it, this really doesn’t feel as though it has a lot to do with political Islam.

The area that this earthquake effected is absolutely massive. A good portion of Turkey, almost all of Syria, Most of Lebanon, Eastern Cyprus, Portions of Iraq, Jordan and even parts of Iran, Georgia, and Armenia felt this earthquake. I hope the best for everyone effected by the quake, and Rest In Peace to the ones killed.

There’s apparently been a 7.5-magnitude aftershock in the past hours.

Mtwara wrote:I didn't know Turkey was prone to earthquakes - are buildings designed to withstand any particular magnitude of earthquake?

It’s expensive to build reinforced foundations and joints that can absorb the energy of the shaking, we don’t even mandate it in some regions of the US that are quite vulnerable to earthquakes. Even reinforced buildings can suffer damage with quakes of this size, though.

Vistulange wrote:I'm not sure if this counts as evidence, but I'm willing to take a risk.

In Turkey, there is extensive talk about the government levying a tax ("deprem vergisi", literally "earthquake tax") for use on earthquake precautions, which began after the 1999 Gölcük Earthquake. The current government—which is the "Political Islam" here—has often been accused of using the funds of this tax for other, unrelated projects, thus people accusing them of killing people by negligence.

The part about the conspiracy theories refers to HAARP, which for some reason has attracted the attention of Turkish conspiracy theorists, often sharing cloud constellations and U.S. Navy ships along with the idea that the United States is (somehow) causing earthquakes.

Separately, the Directorate of Religious Affairs (known as "Diyanet") has decreed that prayers will be read aloud from mosques across the country, including the affected provinces. The volume of these prayers is expected to hamper search-and-rescue efforts, since people using whistles or just yelling may be suppressed by the loudspeakers. This is perceived as a publicity stunt by the government, once again linking back to "Political Islam" killing people.

Therefore, while Hakinda has not articulated it well, it is not completely detached from the situation as much as it seems.

Turkey is, historically, quite seismically active. As far as I know Turkey has adopted European building codes, so in theory, newer buildings are designed to withstand a specified earthquake load. How well that was implemented is another matter. And of course older buildings aren’t part of that and I doubt many of them have been retrofitted.

I'm never sure what to say. Condolences seem so week and powerless, "thoughts and prayers" are actively offensive. I suppose it's worth mentioning that there are charities that are already very active in the area, and donating to them would be a good idea.

UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the Red Cross/Red Crescent have been at the Turkish border with Syria since before this started. And are probably in a good position to help now.

If anyone else knows other charities that they think would be worth mentioning, please do.

EDIT: Someone reached out via telegram and recommended a couple more. I don't personally know much about these charities, but I am willing to assume good-faith on their part unless given a reason not to. They are:
AKUT "Turkish NGO focusing on search-and-rescue efforts" - https://www.akut.org.tr/en
and
Ahbap "another Turkish NGO which has a more general purpose of helping those in need." Their website does not have an English version, but Google Translate seems to do okay. - https://ahbap.org/bagisci-ol

Erdogan declares seven-day national mourning in Türkiye over deadly quakes
Türkiye will observe seven days of national mourning after deadly earthquakes hit several southeastern provinces, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced.

"Due to the earthquakes that took place in our country on February 6, a national mourning period was declared for seven days. Our flag will be hoisted at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, February 12, in all our country and foreign representations,” Erdogan said on Twitter.

At least 1,651 people were killed and 11,119 others injured in 10 provinces due to two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Monday.

Early Monday morning, a 7.7 earthquake jolted Kahramanmaras and strongly shook several neighbouring provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis.

Later, at 13.24 pm (1024GMT), a 7.6 magnitude quake also centred in Kahramanmaras struck the region.

After the earthquake, an "air aid corridor" was created by the Turkish Armed Forces to deliver search and rescue teams to the region.

"We mobilised our planes to send medical teams, search and rescue teams, and their vehicles to the earthquake zone. We have maximised the readiness of our aircraft to provide the necessary transportation service," National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said.

He later announced that a naval personnel transport ship would dock at the port of Iskenderun in Hatay later in the night to carry those injured to hospitals in Mersin province, about 140 kilometres (87 miles) west.
