Reactivation of the Stonehenge Turret Network (MT/IC)

The Stonehenge Turret Network

Forty years ago, the stars fell from the skies.

On the eve of 1983, the first fragments of the Calamity Astroid broke apart in orbit over the earth and rained down on earth. The collective yield of all these fragments was estimated to be the equivalent of a billion nuclear warheads detonating over every continent. Every single scientific expert on the planet declared this Sixth and final Mass Extinction.

But humanity had prepared in the decade since the destruction and done the impossible by uniting the entire world against this common foe. Nations that had been at total war against each other laid down their arms and embarked on a mission of Herculean proportions. Development in any area that might assist them was accelerated beyond belief. In those ten years technology advanced by leaps and bounds as if thirty had passed. Every nation by the time 1983 approached had created some sort of defense in the form of disaster management, expansive bunker complexes, or population evacuation.

But some nations decided to confront the fragments head-on.

Santoak was one of the nations and their main defense took the form of the Stonehenge Turret Network system.

Stonehenge was a series of twenty massive 400cm cannons built on Santoak's Northern Fortress Island of Hokkaido on the outskirts of Auckland. The weapons were officially called the "400 cm anti-air-and-surface, gunpowder-and-electromagnetic hybrid acceleration-based semi-automatic fixed-gun system", operated on a hybrid energy principle using gunpowder to initially propel projectile shells, and then accelerate them to maximum velocity with electromagnetic energy. It was capable of launching projectiles with 30-ton warheads at speeds of 20 kilometers per second. These warheads were N2 mines capable of nearly replicating the yield of nukes with none of the fallout that had been specifically built for this occasion so that these shells could airburst to either further shatter or utterly disintegrate the incoming fragments. The effective range of the gun was given to be 6000 KM but theorists believed they could even push the limits to 10,000 KM this was shot down as the propellant needed to reach that range would not only warp the 400cm caliber barrels but the shockwave of the firing could trigger minor earthquakes. While pushing this limit would have extended the range of protection to a majority of North America it was decided by Santoak to consolidate over Asia.

The proposal drawing for Stonehenge's Cannons

To direct these twenty turrets a synthesized control network was established in a bunker half a kilometer beneath the facility. It was formed by a complex of 20,480 supercomputers split into 1,024 sets of eight; each was capable of performing ten billion floating point arithmetic operations per second. Stonehenge was capable of performing a total of 400 trillion operations per second using all of its computational power. Feeding into this massive data-hungry beast was a series of powerful radars, orbiting satellites, weather models of Pacific atmospheric conditions, and about anything else that could give information about the sky. It would be needed in order to intercept hundreds of thousands of fragments.

The sheer cost of construction for Stonehenge nearly bankrupted the Government and when its acceptance into the general defense plan was announced placed the nation on the verge of civil war as some demanded that a focus be placed on bunkers and simply enduring the damage, rather than preventing it. For that decade of preparation a tenth of the national budget was dedicated to its program, forcing many public services to be dialed back or stripped bare to provide for Stonehenge. Thousands died in the construction as workers fell into a desperate fever to complete it before the deadline whatever the cost for failure they knew would mean the destruction of most of East Asia.

But when on December 1st when the first fragments came into the atmosphere, Stonehenge fired the first shot and proved its worth. For the next 25 days, it would be instrumental in defending a billion lives from the wrath of the heavens. On December 25th, First Impact was declared over and the guns fell silent for the final time.

The question of what to do with Stonehenge after First Impact was answered when in 1994 the Angel Ireul hijacked the supercomputer and poised to use the massive cannons to rain untold death upon the world by deploying it as twenty of the largest N2-armed artillery pieces ever built. Only the newly created Evas of the Evangelion Project placed a stop to this attempt though in the battle that followed all but eight of the guns were destroyed. In the aftermath, Stonehenge was declared to be deactivated until a later date.

Well, that date has come now nearly 29 years later.

On January 7th, Lord Project Asuka Ikari the supreme commander of the SSDF (Santoak Self-Defence Forces), made the following announcement at the end of her usual State of the Union speech after Prime Minister Ikari Soryuu had made his:

"The danger of developing threats abroad to the Home Islands has led the SSDF to decide must take drastic measures to ensure its protection. As of just before this, I have given the Engineering Corps the orders to begin measures to reactivate the Stonehenge turret network. Stonehenge will serve as the ultimate point defense system for Santoak capable of intercepting hostile air threats in the forms of aircraft and missiles of all measures. Its range all the way to the limits of Central Asia and to Australia and Hawaii is a declaration of Santoak and the SSDF commitment to self-defense. It will supply us with the means to total air domination over this area that the SSDF sees as necessary for our protection. No doubt this range will cover nations hostile to us and should they protest I will now say upon them this: Santoak will no longer tolerate your attempts to impose your tyranny nor evil over East and South-East Asia. Santoak has sworn itself to be a peer amongst these nations and regards their protection now as our National and Socialist Duty."

"Councillors and Representatives, Stonehenge will be expected to be reactivated in a month with all eight active turrets and we will explore the possibility of restoring the other twelve. In the meantime, before it is reactivated and to ensure its protection I have ordered the deployment of three divisions of the Ground Forces totaling around thirty thousand men and accompanying air support to guard against any evils that may desire to prevent us from its reactivation."

"Additionally as a member of the UCN, we will declare that this action was taken to ensure peace and protection over Asia."

"That is all."

What the Lord Protector left unsaid was Stonehenge's capability of becoming the most lethal artillery battery in the world, capable of extending Santoak's reach over the majority of Asia and all of China, just like the dreaded Ireul had attempted to do.

To say this would be controversial both domestic and abroad... was to say the least.

I'll just keep it simple:

This will be MT or near Post-MT but no space battleships or anything like that. Imagine tech if it was 2050-70 as kinda the soft limit. If unsure just poke in the OOC.

We're an abomination of a nation with New Zealand and Japan fused together where Japan is.

Also we have to deal with Kaiju. So there's that.

Coming in from the southeastern pacific, the GMF Totec was cruising at speed for the Stonehenge complex, or at least the nearest port to it, with the mighty battleship being escorted by an array of USVs and a few destroyers that were quite small when compared to the beast. Flying the Gonswanzan flag, she was a strange creature, as she broke the waves and soon docked at port, after hailing to the port and the crew announcing their intent. A simple tech exchange, with an inspection of the complex. Simple, really, as the Gonswanzans hoped to sell them the rights to the very powerplant that fueled the Totec along with perhaps even selling them the fuel as well, given Gonswanza was the only country on the planet that could produce fuel for such a reactor design... Even if one could modify the reactor to produce fuel and power to feed another reactor to produce power by consuming said fuel.

Regardless, peaceful intent was to be had here, and heck, even the crew of Totec offered to power any facilities that needed it, given they were not going to charge the railguns for use any time soon and it would be sitting idle at port... Though if the proposal is rejected for power to be taken from Totec, the reactor would be shut down to save on otherwise precious fuel.

North Island, known additionally in Santoakian as Hokkaido, was the realm of the SSDF. The fortress island acted as a bastion for Santoak against the threats created by the North American Rift. Other than the coastline, most of the island's core was mountainous or made with rugged terrains such as thick forests or rolling hills that made the job of any attacker harder than any right than it should be. A series of fortifications and bases built upon the island as a garrison only made it worse while the mountains themselves had been practically hollowed out for SSDF facilities. The entire cliffside could suddenly yawn open, revealing their facade covering armored doors that protected massive missile batteries or cannons aimed out to sea.

It was generally regarded that any threat coming from higher than the 35th parallel had to go through Hokkaido first.

It was one of the many reasons that Stonehenge first broke ground right on the outskirts of Naval Base Auckland.

The moment GMF Totec entered Santoak airspace a squadron of ASF-X Shinden IIs with a pair of squadrons made out of F-15Js made way to ensure safe escort. The last thing the SSDF wanted was any risk to their reputation or another national embarrassment, which was now placed on the line with their radical move to reactivate Stonehenge. Currently, the National Diet was railing the SSDF in sessions over the estimated costs and the potential of it triggering an arms race in the Pacific.

Pilot ships would move to guide the GMF Totec into Port Moresby just adjacent to Stonehenge which was connected by road and railway for about a kilometer. Port Moresby had fallen into disuse in the thirty years since the Angel M.A.G.E attack which resulted in the shutdown of Stonehenge in the first place. Several new warehouses were being rapidly constructed in order to replace the ones that had collapsed with age and rust or from battle damage. In fact, the port and the area around it still bore many scars from the Angel attack all those years ago. After all, it was where it had first made landfall. Old craters, both small and massive, dotted the landscape. The larger ones had turned into small lakes and plant life bloomed in groves around them due to the anomalous radiation signatures Angels left behind them.

In the distance like gigantic titans, the guns of Stonehenge loomed. Some were pointed at the skies, some had their barrels resting on the ground, while others had been demolished or ruined entirely. At least eight of the guns still remained.

Once the Totec had come into port an underwater high-yield cable would be offered to connect the ship's reactor to the main facilities of the port and provide auxiliary power to the supercomputers which the technicians were struggling to reboot.

Standing at the edge of the pier were two women. One was dressed in a white lab coat that blustered around in the strong sea breeze of the dawn. She had short blonde hair. The other was a more diminutive woman who seemed to stand in the scientist's shadow in a simple brown technician's uniform and had a clipboard by her side.

To the first person of importance that left the ship or they encountered if allowed onboard the woman in the lab coat would announce, "Greetings. I am Ritsuko Akagi, the leading director of operations here at Stonehenge, and this is my assistant technician, warrant officer Maya Ibuki. I would like to thank you for coming to assist but I'm afraid I must be direct here: one does not provide energy or offer a revolutionary power plant for free. What does Gonswanza want in return?"

VonRudol could only laugh, as her assistant who was of a shorter build and dressed in a cloak that hid her features responded in signs, before Rudol herself translated for her. Seeing that one of their eyes were artificial, it was likely they were a scarred mess under all of those clothes.

"Well, my aide here says that we wish to inspect the Stonehenge complex, along with perhaps acquiring the details of the weapons themselves to benefit Gonswanzan weapons... While we do have railguns, there were musings about Stonehenge using a combined system, from satellite reports and what the guns looked like from above. Of course, we are offering our reactor design in return, heck, we could even sell you a physical reactor and the fuel necessary as well, given we are the only supplier in the world with such capabilities. For now. It's nice to get ahead of the competition, no?"

Rudol then steps aside as the inspectors, five well dressed men in suits, step up. They all seemed almost military or ex military, yet, she simply whistles to let them relax.

"These fine men are the aforementioned inspectors. They will be gathering information and pushing pencils as we walk and talk, along with offering mild input if there are any concerns. Glorified engineers, really. All that we say and do here stays here however, beyond the tech exchange I am willing to offer. All the press will ever know is that Gonswanza and Santoak shook hands, traded business cards, and maybe even talked some mild gossip about global affairs."

In short, a more secretive meeting. But that didn't mean it all had to be in the dark.

Entering the Suez Canal and exiting in the Indian Ocean, the OFA Oder was at cruising speed heading for the nearest port near the Stonehenge Complex. The Ayshirean government was suddenly interested in a nation on the other side of the world and the Oder was the closest ship nearby giving her crew and captain their orders. The captain was dismayed but orders are orders. The nation of Santoak also slightly piqued his interest as he heard about their ancient past and their journey was almost finished. He also had another mission given to him personally by the Prime Minister who flew in a helicopter all the way to his ship. As the captain looked on he thought he saw the massive complex in the distant and leaned back in his chair. They had arrived.

As the ORP Oder approached the dock the captain briefed the rest of his officers on their true mission. While it'll be presented as a simple diplomatic visit the Sejm had become interested in acquiring technology from Santoak and how much of a threat they posed to Ayshirean interests in the region. After the captain finished briefing his officers they went back to their stations all eager to execute their task. The captain though was wary, unsure whether or not the Santoakans could be trusted and what their real reason behind reactivating Stonehenge was. He hoped to find out but knew that would be very unlikely, never the less he would serve his countries interests to the best of his ability. He ordered the ship to begin slowing down and dock at the port, once done they would wait to see if anyone would greet them.

As the Oder came to a stop the captain noticed another ship, with the flag of Gonswanza. He was surprised but relieved as their nations have traded with each other and and had no reason to fight, and there were plans for the Sejm to approve a proposal to buy a few ships from them and increase trade. He ordered the ship to come to a complete stop behind the ship and got up to look out of the bridge noticing a small group of people on the dock. He looked at them for a bit then ordered two marines to escort him to the dock, he had always been paranoid about being assassinated and wasn't going take the chance. Two marines armed with Ak-107s came up to him and saluted.

"Come along now men don't want to make a late entrance now do we?"

The marines escorted him out of the bridge and to the dock.

"The area is on media lockdown already. The National Diet has been rather argumentative about the process and choice we made to push forward for its reactivation. Those luddites will try to find fault with anything regarding us these days so the less the public knows, the less they can whine, and the more we can focus on the task," she said, "I do suppose we have been struggling with finding a reactor to power Stonehenge. When Calamity approached the National power grid suffered rolling blackouts to supply additional power to Stonehenge even though we had built several powerplants solely for it. With the thirty years of disuse and us losing most of the technical knowledge required to continue maintenance, I'm afraid we can no longer hope to use them. A reactor like one of yours and the ability to replicate it would solve most of our issues and speed up the process considerably."

Ritsuko paused for a moment in thought before again. "Very well. As director here I can afford a brief tour of the facilities itself and maybe provide a bit of explanation for information that isn't marked as extremely confidential. Answer some questions while you're here."

"But I will have to place down some ground rules. For one, you and your five inspectors will be under armed guard at all times. If this is an issue then I apologise but given the sensitive nature of Stonehenge I really can't afford to risk it. Second, no cameras or any sort of recording sensors on you. And finally I will be honest here," a darker look came across her eyes, "for security if you are found in any way involved in espionage you will be treated as a foreign agent intruding on our soil, necessitating all means up to and including lethal force."

Maya spoke up in an unsure voice, "I hope it doesn't have to come to that! I don't like seeing blood... not again."

"Maya," Ritsuko muttered.

"Sorry."

The Director turned back to Von Rudol, "If that's understood I have three jeeps down near the gangplank. I'll drive the first one. Want to ride shotgun?"

"Show of force?"

"Show of force."

Waiting on the dock itself was a single woman. She was dressed in a curt and decently formal duty uniform. Her hair was bleached white and kept in a bun underneath a peaked cap with the emblem of the Santoak Self-Defence Forces and the title "Mobile Suit Division." She stared up at the Captain of the Oder with a cold emotionless look.

Before he could walk a single step forward there was a loud whine of engines from behind a port warehouse nearby, sounding like a tsunami crashing against a bastion wall. A cloud of dust was thrown up over the warehouse. Something was lifted out of the dust cloud but the only thing that could be visible was the blue afterburners of its thrusters.

The dust faded away in the updraft created by it to reveal a massive humanoid festooned in the armor of red. Nearly twelve meters tall the Mobile suit carried on its shoulder a 360mm Bazooka fed by a three-missile magazine. Clenched in its right hand was a massive axe whose edge glowed yellow hot with heat. And in the center of its head was a single cyclops' eye that blazed a furious crimson.

It hovered over the warehouse and landed barely a meter behind the woman, causing the earth to tremble. She didn't flinch.

With the massive Mobile Suit standing behind her she opened her mouth for the first time, merely asking the question "What is your purpose here?"

"Most certainly! However, ot would be better for Gonswanza to deliver the reactors, as construction cam be... Complex. One minor flaw can easily destroy its capacity to produce power and keep it offline for years, given prototype runs on the smaller scale. And don't worry, the only recording device is just paper and pencil, but sensitive information won't be gathered."

Hopefully. Yet, with the new ship incoming, Rudol and company turn to look at it, with Rudol's aide waving to it like a happy child. VonRudol however calms her down, as the inspectors watch the crew of the incoming ship disembark for their own meeting. The Gonswanzans, however, dont move from their positions, unsure who exactly they were meeting... Until they saw the flag. Which... Didnt help as they failed to recognize it. This was... Unexpected.

"Good, I am interested in these reactors of yours. We've always had advanced technology thanks to the acceleration we gained for preparing for calamity all those years ago, but we've struggled to power them now that we have a growing population and that power's needed elsewhere. Hopefully one day we can learn to construct it in a safe manner, under your licence to be sure." she began to walk down the gangplank to the cars when she noticed Rudol's staring at the Ayshire ship and the "diplomatic processes" currently taking place across the port.

"Unlike you, it seems that they didn't exactly have permission. We're working on having them declare their cause. I won't have them interrupt us." she would point at the Mecha in red " "That is one of our Engineering-Focused Mobile Suits, the RX-87s "Zaku". That axe is actually meant to help clear debris than to be used in combat, though it is quite capable of either. It meant being able to switch between a logistic and combat role when we're in difficult close-quarters terrain. Or in this case to send a message."

Von Rudol seemed... Well... Unimpressed. As her aide seemed excited again, Rudol puts a hand on her head, almost pushing her down to stomp out her energy.

"Walkers do seem a bit inefficient, high ground pressure with a small base and poor balance means its more likely to fall over or sink into the ground. But while I would ask how you overcame the limitations, I feel it would be pointless as its not related to why I am here."

She was awfully blunt about her opinion on walkers, though then again the MoD was experimenting with robot dogs to provide recon support for infantry.

As they walk along, she takes out a cig, just to smoke, as her aide signs something to her. She responds in sign, before patting her head.

"Shh... Sometimes people worry too much for me."

The captain looks up at the massive robot impressed at the technological achievement before looking at the woman and answered her question "Uspokój się przyjacielu I come here not as a enemy but as a friend."

"Maybe for your circumstances, they would not fit. However, given our doctrine, terrain, the fact the neural link necessitates a humanoid structure, and a few dozen other reasons I say it makes sense. They're also lighter than you'd expect, the ZAKU is one of our largest engineer suits and it's twenty-eight tons at most. The Joint Councils put a bit too much production into them than I personally think is wise but it's exciting and what gets the public to fund another round of exuberant military spending. Not that I complain. A lot of that funding goes into my projects as well." she said, "I think you know how hard it gets when the bigwigs start counting pennies and axing your programs."

Ritsuko got into the driver's seat of the Mitsubishi Type 73 Light Truck, the tarp roof having been removed. She'd crack open the passenger's side glove compartment and take out a pair of black aviator shades. "I suppose I should start now. Stonehenge as you know was built in the late 70s to counter the threat of the Calamity Asteroid heading towards us. Instead of doing what the other nations were doing - building bunkers and praying - those pig heads, including my father, decided to take God head-on with a massive cannon. I think men back then were compensating for something."

If Von Rudol got in she would press the gas on the jeep and begin rolling through the port. A pair of dug-in Type 10 tanks bid them farewell as they would pass by the small gate of the port before emerging onto the highway. In the distance just a kilometer away the metal titans of Stonehenge's guns loomed. "'400 cm anti-air-and-surface, gunpowder-and-electromagnetic hybrid acceleration-based semi-automatic fixed-gun system.' That's their official name. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. As the name suggested and what your analysts predicted, it operates on a hybrid energy principle using powder to initially propel projectile shells, and then accelerate them to maximum velocity with electromagnetic energy. My predecessors didn't go for a full railgun design as we didn't have enough juice in the whole country to power them and railguns had been a fairly recent technology here in Santoak. We had been short on time and therefore a hybrid build was settled on. Those guns could launch shells up to 30 tons at about sixty times the speed of sound. You could hear the roar of them firing all the way at Hamilton down south. The effective range was judged to be about 6,000 kilometers but some hollow brains thought they could push to 10,000."

"All this might sound excessive and it is excessive even today but that's what we thought we needed in our darkest hour those four decades ago, an impossible project for the country to unite against. While most of the world simply endured, we resisted. And look where that got us."
Yes I'm an Evangelion fan, how could you tell?

We're an abomination of a nation with New Zealand and Japan fused together where Japan is.

Also we have to deal with Kaiju. So there's that.

The next words I hear better be a reason for why I should allow you to remain here and not push your boat back out to sea, with or without you on it."

He blinked and paused for a moment surprised to hear his native tongue in a foreigners mouth, he shook his head and snapped to hoping this wouldn't all be for naught.

"So where did you learn Polish not many people speak my countries language and I've come here on a diplomatic mission and to establish trade with your country if that's possible if not we will gladly comply and head back to European waters."

The captain and his men then scurry back onto the deck of the Oder just in case the woman and the massive machine decides to push them, the captain was anxious knowing full well that the massive machine could cleave his ship in half and didn't want to be stranded on the other side of the world.

The captains face turned into one of disgust at the mention of Moscow remembering how the Russians had brutalised his ancestors many moons ago. He sets that aside and nods his head before speaking. Of course, Rudol hopped in, with her aide and the lads. Fun stuff, truly.

"Impressive. Gonswanza was hoping to create similar guns to boost the range of their naval howitzers, pairing high performance powder with plasma ignition and extreme chamber pressure, but even that has limits. An electromagnetic booster could actually surpass the disadvantages of railguns and even offer similar performance as well with a lower cost. All that aside, however, I do wonder if perhaps the site is truly safe from these so-called... Kaiju. If not, the reactors and fuel will need to be buried deep underground in secure, hardened bunkers to keep everything from being damaged."

A valid concern, looking over the scars that had remained from the last attack.

The captain seemed relieved at the thought of going home but knew he'd be demoted if he went back with nothing but that was something we was willing to accept.

"It seems your economy is strong, it's pretty impressive if only my country was the same but with the constant foreign deployments it'll never reach its true potential, anyways since we offer you nothing our visit here is done I presume, Do widzenia pani." He then quickly issued a order for the men to get the ship ready to leave wanting to make for home as soon as possible. He then turned around and started to head back to the bridge humming to himself and praying that the Sejm will understand and hoping that he can successfully convince them that Santoak poses no interest.

"A two-stage booster of course wouldn't be without its drawbacks and difficulties. The last generation that used Stonehenge ran into difficulties with extensive barrel wear from use and heat warping. After all, you have to deal with the heat output of both the propellant gases and the railgun system itself. We used rifling on the barrels since the shells we used had to be rifled to work properly and given the sheer velocity we were sending these rounds at, they wore out quicker than had been estimated. Changing barrels with guns of that size? It won't be a fast job. People died because of that," she said, "But I'm still thankful we choose this two-stage system. As you said, it surpassed many of the challenges we faced even if we had to make compromises."

The moment Rudol mentioned the Kaiju Maya spoke up from the backseat.

"Yes. Angels or more officially known as M.A.G.Es. One of the reasons Stonehenge was built on the North Island of Hokkaido was to guard against outside threats even though the existence of Angels was not yet known." she spoke in a rapid and excited manner, "Conventional munitions are often regarded as generally ineffective against Angels ranked highly on the Serizawa Scale but Evangelions are not. In fact, Stonehenge was where the Evangelion Project was first deployed. They were instrumental against Ireul, ripping the Angel from its attempt to infiltrate Stonehenge's servers and forcing it into an engagement amongst the cannons. I'm afraid I can't say anymore, ma'am, security clearance."

"Yes... like Maya said we have the Evangelion Project to counter these Kaiju but I always like to err on the side of caution. Of course, we could dig bunkers for these reactors but I'm concerned that we have to dig so deep. It sounds like not to protect them from damage, but to protect us from its damage. Tell me, assume the worst possible circumstances have occurred: how devastating is one of your reactors entering a critical state going to be?"

Just as he turned around, she spoke "When I mentioned Moscow I noted a reaction from you. I'm trained to notice tells like that. At the mention of Moscow he stops. He twitches before coming too and responding to her question. "Officially we're at peace but they've been supporting terrorists within our borders for years now." He clenched his fists remembering the pain the Russians had caused him and so many others. "We even have to pay them annually every year and a majority of our oil comes from them, they even control the damned pipe lines in our country, next thing you know they're controlling our entire economy!" He kicks the door in a fit of rage then after a few deep breaths calms himself. "I apologise for my outburst the Russians are a touchy subject in my country considering what they did to our ancestors and what they've done to us in recent times."

"Given past trials... Worst we had happen aside from a railgun destroying itself and capacitors detonating was the reactor shutting off in an intentional test. Then we tried again to see if we could make it explode, but funnily enough if anything went wrong with the fields, it would just shut itself off. I mean, aside from the possibility of the system entering a feedback loop and discharging, which is purely hypothetical, but if you've ever seen a tesla coil discharge, imagine that but a hundred times brighter. It's quite safe even with the impossible circumstance, but I'd rather not have to ship over engineers and parts every other week after an attack because the poor thing fell out of alignment. And I'd rather err on the side of extreme caution, given past incidents elsewhere that I can't talk about."

Something about bioweapons, likely, but again, that's just dust in the wind. Dust that can't be revealed without her executing everyone in the area to keep that secret buried for good. Even if it was her own cross to bear in secret, a dire skeleton in her closet of bones.
