The Age of Heroes

Image

The sun rises on a new world- a world not like that you may know. Shattered by a catastrophic impact not long after the extinction of the dinosaurs, Earth is not as it should be. This impact, a star falling to earth, changed not only the shape of the world, but also her content; this star bore strange light and eldritch crystals, warping and altering the planet where humanity slowly arose. Continents were broken, minds shattered, even animals and plants twisted and changed. It is a different world, one in many ways hostile to humanity.

But in the end, it is your world.

You stand forward as one of the leaders of a great city of men. It has been many centuries now since the first tribes emerged in the impact of the Cataclysm, family groups formed from scattered wanderers and survivors, and now civilization in earnest is rising from those embers. Men ply trade upon the waves of the sea, either propelled by oars and scarred backs, or the might of sails. Caravans roam savage lands, making fortunes for their owners if they are not devoured by ferocious beasts. The first priests, and god-kings, and republics lay claim to the passages of the world beyond the sight of their doorways, and bronze-armed warriors march across the hinterland. Men declaim poetry, and gaze at the stars, wielding magicks both powerful and dangerous.

To be a leader in such times is to be given glorious potential, but also enormous responsibility. Civilization is fragile, and dark things lurk both in the hearts of men and in the wilds of the world. Will you rise to greatness alongside your kinsmen, or will you falter and be forgotten? Come, and tell the tale of the Age of Heroes.

The sun rises over many kindreds, sons of prominent sires who have banded together for mutual defense and from bonds of bloodied fellowship. As it begins its journey up out of the west, the first kindred the sun gazes upon are the Xcotl. Thirs is a war-like folks, steeped in equal parts martial ethos and blood-seaked mysticism. From their island home in the marshes of the distant west, their ways are strange to many. Wild plums make sweet their days, however - and the hoot and roar of their brazen bulls is said to lend the air a particular quality. Both to the the west and to the south of the Xcotl's marshes, the land rises - at least in part - into dry, flat plains where endless grasses weave in the gentle breeze. In the north, similar plains give way to rolling foothills which rise steeply into the peaks of a vast, brooding mountain range - a sight almost as impressive as the gleaming coastlands and wide ocean to the east.

The next kindred the Sky-Rider comes upon are the Alikos. They are the guardians of Godhome – keepers of the mountain path that leads to Akroas’ sacred peak – and they are justly proud for it. Their city, perhaps, reflects this – raised as it is astride the gods’ own river. By its banks their generations have prospered – and learned well to appreciate the gleaming opals that fleck its stream. Veins of iron, fat and deep, cross the nearby foothills, and skittish flocks of red deer graze sparingly in the shade of tall, majestic cedar trees. Life, for now, is kind – as will it ever be. Surely. North of Alikos, the land rises steeply into the mist-shroaded cargs of the Godhome. West, where the sun rises, flat fields roll gently into sun-scorched steppes - while East, the foothills of yet more mountains line the horizon, dark and forboding. Soutwards, the gods' own river widens into flat, green plains.

Next the sun's rays bring dawn to the Tachi-na-Vao. On the hilly banks of the Blood of Ishizuki, these stony-faced kindred have made their homes. They share these environs with the great, shaggy herds of Lac-horses - companions animals and erstwhile beasts of burden. Yet they are not alone. Sullen herds of longhorned cattle can also be found grazing in Ishizuki's shallows. They are particularly fond of psarmelons, rich and plump, groves of which dot the landscape. Farther inland, fizzures in the foothills reveal deposits of a strange, grayish ore with the tone and color of a rainy afternoon. North of Nha Tachi, the Congvao mountains rise - tall and majestic. Their foothills can be seen stretching for some distance into the east also, where they give way to grassy flatlands. Southwards, the Blood of Ishizuki widens into a grassy plains and rolling, wind-swept steppes - while to the west, similar flatlands rise once more into the wooded foothills of the Congvao. Tall and mighty.

Soon after, dawn comes to the homes of the Hue. In a dell by a vast and muddy river, these refugees from a distant calamity have set their stakes, for better or worse – and they have thrived. Deposits of copper dot the landscape here, and plinths of granite too; a fact of no little note for enterprising souls. Odd stands of majestic cedars likewise make an appearance. At night, these trees resound with the buzzing insect-chitter of great, moon-pale creatures that wing their way across star-lit skies – said to emerge from hollows in the earth. What can rumors make of such a people? Said to cavort with bats, sing to cedar-trees and blame both good fortune and ill luck on the whimsy of mighty 'demons'? Much and more, probably. But regardless, the Hue are as they are - and no man should discount them.

The sun's life-giving rays next touch upon the Aederfolk. Led by the scions of the House of Gwyr, these braves have made their home on the shores of the Bay of Dagonach. The coastal plains that surround them are home to many wonders – including errant herds of great, gray oliphaunts. Stands of swarthy stone as black as night dot the landscape here and there – and along the shore, pools of sweetkelp prove the truth of its name. Farther inland, fields of wild sugarcane hold some interest also. North of the Aederfolk’s city, the coastal plains give way to rolling hills. Westwards, fertile grasslands stretch on into the horizon – while to the east, the coastal floodplain is crisscrossed by a long gleaming river. To the south, along the coast, coniferous woods grow surprisingly thick – a welcome barrier to the wind blowing in from the sea.

Dawn next arrives on the hillsides of the Bari. From the promotories of their highland sanctuary, these kindred are old in both honor and pride - and justly so, for they have survived many trials and tribulations to reach this far. Flocks of sheep graze here - bleating impertinently admist the rolling hillocks - and deposits of native copper are well in evidence for those with eyes to see. Stands of olives - tart and black - and patches of wild wheat the color of sunlight ensure that none go hungry. As far as geography is concerned, the abodes of the Bari hold a vast, forboding mountain range to their south and west, while to the east a vast, green woodland stretches on beyond even the most distant horizon. Northwards, these same woods give way to flatter, breezier fields and savannahs. What wonders - and horrors - the lands beyond them hold remains to be seen.

The sun next rises upon the Nirat. Between the twin rivers of the Great Mother and the Tap, their fertile garden-city thrives. A vital link in a once vibrant kingdom, these upstart heirs to fallen Kheterata are ruled by a self-styled Vizier. Fed by fecund mud from the rising of its two mighty rivers, it should surprise no one that life and greenery is plentiful. Stands of ropegrass wave in the wind here, neck to neck with patches of wheat – wild and golden. These are turbulent times for the people of Nirat. The realm of which they once were a vital link is shattered - yet wise men and clever crones all speak of a reforging. Or at least war, or rumours of war. Wether Nirat, wild and fecund, shall come out on top in all this, remains to be seen. Her sister-cities are, after all, as keen to wear a Khetarch's crown as she is - and that honor is not one they are likely to share.

The Ravarii are the next kindred the sun alights upon. Flavored in equal part by the hills of their homeland and the favor of their merciful gods, the Ravarii are accomplished seal-hunters and prudent homemakers in equal measure. Theirs is a fine city, Ravar, nestled by the banks of the River of Rest. Copses of pale-pink cherry trees are in evidence here; and great flocks of tawny-faced river-seals converge each spring beyond the shallows. Veins of copper make likewise an appearance, in between tall stands of rock as pale as mother’s milk. North of Ravar, great mountains loom into the skyline – and to the east and south the River of Rest winds onwards through a land flat and grassy until it empties into the great, blue sea. West, beyond the river’s banks, great, green woodlands spread beyond the ken of mortal men.

By the time noon rolls around, the sun shines upon yet another kindred - the Valdani. By the roar of the River of Kings, that mightiest of streams, stands their home, Valda. With their nomadic past behind them, these now-settled kindreds have made the homes of their foes their own – and are better for it. Veins of iron glisten in the nearby foothills; and stands of pale-yellow sand-spuds too. Good for eating they are, despite their appearance – especially when roasted by an open fire. The local goats are especially fond of them, and the old staple crop of fallen Suzer too – wheat. Coarse and oaty, waving in the breeze. North of Valda, the foothills of the Star Mountains vie with rolling plains - flat and fecund, while to the east stretches the many leagues of the Dreaming Wood - green and ancient. South, as the river flows - and eastwards also - woodlands and hilly crags give way to yet more plains.

Lastly, the sun shines upon the lands of the Huang. Sprawled across the Yu river valley like a great, indolent cat, the Huang are masters of everything the light touches. Theirs is a happy and diligent kindred – and they rule with pride from the bastion of their people – the tribal capital of the Hao. Up and down the lush banks of their mother river, patches of wild rice fill many bellies – and in several of her lesser tributaries, pale, gleaming tin – soft and pliable – gleam invitingly. Farther inland, humble stands of medicinal herbs vie for space with croppings of pale, precious rock-salt. North of the Hao, their river turns west as the lands rises into tall, pine-studded mountains, while to the east, plains and mountains vie for supremacy with a distant, gleaming coastline. Westwards, a tributary of their mighty river rolls on, wide and muddy, into a sea of grassy plains as far as the eye can see - a view mirrored likewise to the distant south.

And so the sun sets, and then rises anew, a fresh day of the Age of Heroes.

The Forest Under Midnight

The River of Kings, Valda
18th of Summer's Hand

A high eerie melody crossed the steaming riverlands, the morning's mist covering the source of the elegant strains. Gossamer clouds glinted in shades of vermillion, crimson, and beaten gold, as the sun rode upward in his endless dance out of the west. His rays fell first upon the trackless depths of the Dreaming Wood, where the beasts of the Three crept and slept, and then traveled down the length of the many small streams who emerged from those arboreal margins across the fertile plains of eastern Valda.

The rumble of the River of Kings swallowed them eagerly, adding their strength to his might, the snow-fed waters of the greatest mountain of men tumbling as a voracious rapid through the wide lands of the chosen of the Three-in-One. But even his roar could not wholly drown out the melody, a melody which now more clearly resolved itself as many voices raised in song, men and women singing to greet the dawn.

Valda was a humble town, bare and spartan in many ways, and visitors from beyond her ken and the Thousand Hills oftentimes thought her a strange sight. For Valda was not a village raised of her own accord, like so many, earthenworks and mounded huts established across some likely hillock, or in some fertile dell. No, Valda lived in the shadow of giants, great white marble pillars and the last crumbling walls of ancient marvels integrated into the very shape of her construction. Her palace, where the Hierarchs held court, was as much monolithic stonework from those who had come before as it was the newer and cruder additions of the masons who served the Faithful. Valda was an upstart, a lesser son of greater sires.

And that did not make her any less proud, or haughty, or quick to anger. Quite the opposite, in fact.

There is an old proverb - "A held tongue is wiser than a held sword in the Thousand Hills" - and this is most certainly true, for insults are avenged not necessarily upon merely man who speaks them, but upon his kin, and the kin of his kin. For such slights are dark and festering things, and come not from a single root, but are torn out stem and branch by the hot-blooded warriors of the City of Iron.

Today the Valdani did not march to war, for it was hot summer, and even the most brash and stalwart of the sons of Valda were not so foolish as to plan a campaign in the sweating times when rivers ran dry and men marched wearily. But in the central square of the city a different type of striving was underway; a great monolith, raised and graven by the will of the Great Houses, to commemorate the conquest of ancient Suzer, and tell the stories of the Ancient Heroes who took these lands for their own.

Not many people would commemorate the slaughter of thousands of innocents, the extinction of an old and noble kindred, the loss of so much art, culture, and learning.

But the Valdani were not many people.

Alikos, Iron Gate of Godhome
Year 0 in the Time of Wonder

With curtains of red and gold, Akrates draws his golden chariot across the sky. Before long he will take his rightful place at the peak of Mount Akroa, Godhome, before departing once more at dusk to do battle with Those That Walk The Night. While he fights with sword and might, his kin live a life of splendor in his palace above the clouds, each bright dot in the dark a descendant of the King of Gods.

But in the light of his chariot the Great-Father looks upon both god and mortal alike, and so it is a time of labor and learning. Only in strength of mind and matter may we prove worthy of Godhome’s hallowed halls.

The first year of the Time of Wonder, so noted by the elders and declared by the Speaker himself, was one of building - the ancestral homes of the ancient tribe were sturdy and hale, but hardly enough for the burgeoning populace of Proven and Aspirant. The Aspirants carried stone from Akroa’s base in the mornings, and mortared cobbles for their new homes in the evenings - but the Proven were not idle either, as the elders scavenged the finest grain from the riverbank and the warriors watched over the city’s most honored souls.

From labor, strength. In strength, honor. In honor, prosperity.

Aederfolk

Once in the olden days, Balar was king in heaven. As long as Balar was seated on the throne, the mighty Gedymdeith, first among the gods, was standing before him. He would sink at his feet and set the drinking cup in his hand. Many in number were the years that Balar was king in heaven. In antiquated times even for the Aederfolk, Gedymdeith gave battle to Balar and he vanquished Balar. He fled before him and went down to the dark earth. Down he went to the dark earth, but Gedymdeith took his seat upon the throne. As long as Gedymdeith was seated upon the throne, the mighty Ard Feainn would give him his food. He would sink at his feet and set the drinking cup in his hand.

Many in number were the years that Gedymdeith was king in heaven. In the times of our forefathers, like Gedymdeith before him, Ard Feainn gave battle to his lord. When he could no longer withstand Ard Feainn, Gedymdeith struggled forth from the hands of Ard Feainn and fled. Gedymdeith moved like a bird through the sky. After him rushed Ard Feainn, who seized Gedymdeith by his feet and dragged him down from the sky. Ard Feainn tore from Gedymdeith his eyes, and ate them. Ard Feainn rejoiced and laughed at his victory. Gedymdeith turned back to him, to Ard Feainn he began to speak:

"Thou rejoicest over thine victory, because thou hast swallowed my sight. Rejoice not over thine victory! In thine inside I have planted a heavy burden. Firstly I have impregnated thee with the noble spirit Cahir. Secondly I have impregnated thee with the tempest Senuna, not to be endured. Thirdly I have impregnated thee with the Emyr who will unseat thee. Three dreadful gods have I planted in thy belly as seed. Thou shalt go and end thy suffering only by striking the rocks of thine own mountain with thy head!" When Gedymdeith had finished speaking, he went down into the Earth and hid himself.

The clouds parted and the golden rays of honey graced the land landing on the village of Zhai Cheng below. Tribal King Wei Liang sat in a humble chair in the largest hut in the village of Zhai Cheng. He was a hearty and hale man, hair as black as night with sharp intelligent eyes. His body was strong and muscular from years of hunting and protecting his people.

Another man Kong Jianzhu entered the hut and bowed respectfully in Huang custom. Kong Jianzhu was likewise strong as well, his hair black and skin tanned from being in the sun for so long. Jianzhu his given name meant builder in the Huang language which was a fitting name considering his rough and calloused hands had seen many a hut built. Kong Jianzhu was a close friend of Wei Liang and the two often worked together to ensure the continued prosperity of their people.

" King Wei Liang I bring word from the people they demand more housing I would advise to have some of the men taken from other projects and put to work raising more huts" Kong Jianzhu said in a blunt tone of voice.

Wei Liang nodded in agreement and thought back to past events. At one time Zhai Cheng was built downriver the great Yu River flooded periodically which could be devastating. Indeed, most of the village was destroyed in that flood all those years ago. Wei Liang as king would lead the people to a mighty hill that would protect them from the river. Ever since then the tribe had been protected from the elements. Still rebuilding was expensive, and it would take time until every man, woman and child could have a roof over their heads.

As Wei Liang was lost in thought he finally remembered that Kong Jianzhu was waiting on him. "Yes Kong Jianzhu it shall be done" Wei Liang said in a strong and steady voice.Kong Jianzhu nodded and left the hut. Wei Liang followed. As king his title came from tribal custom in Huang culture a leader was to aid the people many hands made light work and hard work was one of the greatest virtues to the Huang. Together many great things would happen in the future.

Xcotl

It was a strange thing, to be the first to see the Sky Rider. The Sky Rider was a mighty being that produced heat and light throughout the world. It gave its lifeforce to the very world. It was why that the Sky Rider was only used to the Muxpei, the Blood Thirsters. The Gods Beyond the Grave and the ancestor-spirits that are massagers to those that still live. Those who are able to help excersie their ancient magic. However, the magic is gone, the rituals lost in their retreat. But the gods were still watching in their way.

Their leader, Xantipak, had lived far more than a human should. The gods blessed him with using tainted blood to keep him empowered and youthful. A connection to the gods so long the blood flowed through their ever-hungry maws. In exchange for the blood flowing, magic came down and the School was made. But now all was lost till now.

Hundreds of their kindred now stock the fields, gather food from marsh and ocean. 2 more seek to improve the situation of their lot. The scholars, ever enigmatic, try to understand the bones of giants. This was their resting place before the Children of Blood made their sanctuary. Perhaps they were like the Brazen Bulls? A magical resource that was blessed by the Muxpei in order to make sure that they can collect their tithes for the gods once again.

There was much to do and so little time. As the explorers look to go in different directions to understand what lies beyond the island. As the river flowed betwixt them. So, see if there's anything that could be of further use for them. As there is, there was much to do and so little time.

Starting resources: Brazing bulls, Pricklepears, Plums, Giant bones.

Ebbs and Flows

Nha Tachi
Thang Trong, Thirty-Second Day

The Blood slowly rippled as it traveled through the hills, a shining mirror for the sky. To the Tachi, this simple river was the precious gift of the most noble of the divine, which allowed for all of nature to subsist upon its banks. Scattered willows draped their trailing boughs over the waters, waving slightly in the breeze. A herd of longhorn cattle stood in the cool shallows, lazily chewing upon the reeds, lowing gently as they did. The flapping of wings echoed over the valley, as a single crane took flight.

But most importantly, a fat catfish swam below the stone upon which Chien son Hao Phan perched with bated breath. He was a young man, whose voice had broken just mere months ago. He wore the brown wrapping of a monk, and his hair shaved short and simple.

Chien waited as it meandered towards him, silent and focused. It drew closer...and closer still...and Chien raised his spear and struck!

The fish squirmed and thrashed violently as it was pierced and drawn from the river, but it was too little and too late. After a few moments, Chien managed to remove it from the spear and place it into the basket of reeds beside him.

"Another catch, Ten Hy!" Chien proclaimed proudly, waving at his master, who had been observing the youth carefully from the shore. "That's the third one today!"

Hy nodded in approval.

"A good harvest today, Lin Chien. Vao smiles on your work."

"A consolation prize for all this sweat." Chien remarked, wiping his brow with his forearm. It was a rare day where no clouds covered the horizon, and the mist had burned away early this morning. The air was humid and wet, and the wind sat still. And Chien was drenched in his own sweat. Lazy wind! Such disrespect for harmony and the way things should be.

But whether the wind would do its duty or not, the fisherman of Nha Tachi would do theirs. Day in and day out.

"Ebbs and flows, lin." Hy remarked, looking over the contents of his own basket. "There is no pleasure without suffering."

Chien nodded. To be a fisherman was to understand the river, and to understand the river was to understand harmony itself. Despite the drudge of the work, fishermen and farmers held high status within Tachi society. To feed others was one of the highest callings, and the monks would often spend their days in toil and teaching alike. This tutelage was not merely one of the physical act of fishing, but the wisdom that Hy would provide.

"Ebbs and flows." the youth repeated, before hefting the basket onto his shoulder.

Year 100 of the Star-Count
Turn 1

Image

This year’s spring has been usually balmy. Warm winds and gentle rains have been the order of the day – and many kindreds can take solace in bumper crops and fine harvests. As a result of the unseasonably kind weather – and perhaps the gods’ own benevolence – all Rural Districts and Orchards produce 2 extra Food this year. If this largesse continues, even peasants will grow fat!

The Valdani: Sweet and balmy are the Valdanis’ days this year. Some men grumble still, of course - as is their wont. But for some, contentment is simply not in their nature. Meanwhile, the brave explorers heading south enter a lush, green land – trailing the banks of the River of Kings. Thickets of apple trees linger here, and veins of a pale, grey ore glisten in the wan sunlight. The deepest of the riverside thickets are haunted by a queer species of tall, malevolent birds, however. Flightless, and tall even beyond the height of most men – their distinctive bills are sharp, and their quorking cries hold no love of man.

Alikos: By heating the ore, by melting the slag, by cooling the metal over and over, degree by degree, the Alikos’ persistent forgemasters have devised a method of working hot metal to shape it as men might require. Surely, this skill will ensure the safety of their kin in years to come - and the grief of many a foeman's widow. If the gods will it.

The Aederfolk: Northwards head the Aederfolks’ explorers – into the rolling foothills of the land of their sires. Deposits of copper are in evidence here – green and almost iridescent. Flocks of sheep also – wild and wary at the sight of man. They feed well on stands of golden barely; a friend to all who know their keep.

The Huang: The Huang have crowned their first true king, a man both righteous and true. By his rule shall the people know Heaven’s mandate is upheld. These news gladden the hearts of many – and if any men demur or question these proceedings, they are wise enough to keep their misgivings to themselves. With moods high and spirits lifted, no malus to stability may effect the Huang for the next three years.

Xcotl: The bold scions of Xcotl head west this year, following the Sky-Rider’s wake across the heavens. With their familiar marshes behind them, the land rises into rolling hills and wild, grassy flatlands. Stands of coal – black and swarthy – dot the land here, a useful boon for smiths and artisans alike – and rooty tubers of some sort too; pale and yellow. Of greater note though is the fierce and furious kindred that people these grasslands. They walk upright, for the most part – and are hirsuit brutes with coarse, black pelts. Their screeching and cawing give pause to even the bravest!

Tachi-na-Vao: By virtue of trail, error - and no small amount of the gods’ own luck – the wise elders of the Vao have settled on a series of tenets, rules and remedies to aid prospective mothers in the trials of birth. As long as these ways are well observed – and sincere libations offered to the appropriate gods and spirits – the Vao shall surely multiply.

The Conclave, Valda
Twelfth of First Seed, Year One Hundred Two of the Reckoning

Sweat streaked the brow of the laborers as they heaved the beams into position, limbs trembling but hearts glad. The city of the ancients was a defensive fastness, to be sure, many of her approaches protected by the River and the surrounding hills. Such natural advantages had not turned back the Hundred Companions when they cast down the Priest-King and his black sorcerers, but they had served the Faithful well for centuries since then.

Now, however, men were putting greater thought into war and warfare than ever before. The close-packed huts set against the stone ramparts of crumbling edifices that had been raised through winter and summer were only an exemplar of the ambition the most recent crop of Hierarchs had instilled in their Houses and kinsmen. With sturdy timbers and broken stone they now raised a great hall, half cut down into the soil to cool it and help with heating it if winter storms buffeted the plains from out of the Great Grass Sea.

Those with wealth, of course, raised their children on their own terms - with tutors and governesses and maidservants to ensure the prosperity of the youths when their own mothers and fathers were busy about the work of their kindreds. Those with less wealth, however, simply made do. And the Hierarchs had decreed, before the wisdom of the Three-in-One, that a start would be made on a city to rival the ancients - the foremost achievement of which would be a fine Creche, a fortified hall where the sons of the people, all people, may be educated by learned men and cared for by the beneficence of the lords of the city.

Not entirely an altruistic measure. Childcare took up much of the labor of any given household, either mother or father often caring for newborns and those too young to work in the fields and diminishing their potential to give of the strength of their backs to fair Valda. By bringing together these burdens upon productive members of society, more would be able to be done for the good of all.

Ceremonial Flute

The Birthing Grounds, Nha Tachi
Thang Lam Mat, Seventh Day

“The oil, Li Cam!” called Thao daughter Yen Ly, gesturing at a small stone bowl impatiently.

“Yes, Ten Thao!” her student replied, and Cam scurried over to grab the bowl, averting her eyes away from their patient.

The development of a place for birth was a new concept in Tachi culture, but a welcomed one. Bringing life into the world was a dangerous process, and always had been - after all, such a thing had killed the god Ishizuki. Many monks had spent the last few years attempting to improve the chances of success, searching for ways to chase the wicked spirits away.

And some, it appeared, had found favor with the divine.

Bearing the vessel in her hands, Cam Denh hurried over to bring the heated bowl to Thao, who watched the progress of the birth with care. The pregnant woman sat upon the newly-devised birthing chair, arms gripping the handles tightly as she strained. Thao Ly was the master midwife, who would soften the birthing canal through application of warm liquids. She had long, spindly fingers and nails bitten to mere nubs, and the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes marked years of experience.

Two other midwives were present - the twins, Huyen and Tam. Huyen crouched at the feet of the women, hands wrapped in soft wool taken from the underbelly of a Lac. Tam stood at the door, a wooden ceremonial flute in her hands. Beauty and harmony would draw the favor of the gods, which would drive the wicked spirits away.

The flute-bearer held the most important role of the four - should she fail in her task and the mother die, they would be at fault. It was not a crime to fail - but it was an immense shame upon the one who had sought beauty and failed to achieve it. But should the child come hale and healthy, the status and praise lavished upon the performer was great indeed. It was worth the risk to Tam, evidently.

Hours later, a squalling child emerged into the world, carefully guided by delicate hands and wrapped into soft cloth. Tam sighed in relief, putting the flute down and resting chapped lips. Huyen looked over the child, examining it for defects. Thankfully, there were none.

“A blessing is upon us.” Cam breathed, smearing a perfume of tallow and psar fruit upon the mother’s weary forehead. “Beauty, born of your struggle.”

“Harmony reigns.” Thao added proudly, with a curt nod. Their work was not done yet - there were many offerings to be made, of fruit and fish and cloth. But they had succeeded in the most important duty - and for that, they could be proud.

The sun rose in the west, Zhuan Chao dreamt of his ancestors who watched over him and his family from the heavens. They stood on clouds high in the sky and they nodded at him, Zhuan Chao bowed in response. He then woke up from his sleep with a warm feeling inside his stomach. He got up and walked to the ancestral shrine.

He brought some steamed rice buns, some roasted river fish, and most important of all rice wine,or mijiu a family recipe these were the favorite foods and drink of his grandfather Zhuan Tian who built the family hut from his two bare hands.

All Huang honored and worshipped their ancestors. Ancestral worship and filial piety were cornerstones of Huang culture since the earliest days of their tribe countless eons ago in the dreaming time. As Zhuan Chao prayed he felt a breeze combined with fragrance of flowers. It was strange but wonderful. He got up and bowed once more before going to begin his work harvesting rice from the water near the farm. It was him and eight other family members including his wife and two children who were old enough to work. His other two children were with the elders his mother and grandmother.

He was grateful that he had people to look after the children. His mother was more then seventy winters old, his grandmother might as well be ten thousand years old, she outlived everyone years of drinking tea and verbally eviscerating anyone who acted a fool gave her a long life it seemed. But while he was grateful not everyone was so lucky to have older relatives to watch the young.

That's why after the farm work was done a place where all children could be looked after and cared for was being built in the village. Working together many great things would be accomplished in the future.

Turn One of the Ravarii (Retropost approved by OP)

A new generation was coming of age. The population had expanded, and with that, the need for housing. Of course, teenagers and young men and women needed jobs to do as well, and such increases in activity created new demands for wealth. Cut stone was becoming ever more useful, both for decoration, as well as in construction. Stomachs also needed to be filled, but this was a year when the seals were not hindered as they reproduced, as a handful of learned elders had stated that last year had been a time of significant hunting, and the stocks needed to recover.

Thusnelda the Kind-Hearted continued to oversee her people, working alongside those she trusted to administer justice where it was necessary, but primarily to help organize the tasks of the Ravarii peoples, distribute resources, and fulfil the necessary rites, oaths, and customs.

Less able men, and their children, competed with each other to build effective rafts which could carry ever greater weights of stone to be floated downriver to the city itself from the mountains, whilst many young men, their backs glistening with sweat in the sun, worked in the mountains to cut rock and stone. Many people worked hard to enable new huts to be raised, and a large area was cleared for stone cutting. Already, a number of men with some experience in this practiced with the first arrivals of stone, honing their skills, sharpening their tools.

Those less physically strong, whether male or female, assisted their compatriots in many ways- whether bringing food and water, or transporting and aiding the occasional wounded, or otherwise getting involved with the necessary tasks to run the community effectively.

This was a time for laying foundations. The foundations of prosperity and greater food stockpiles. All with the aim of honouring the commandments of the Merciful Ones.

100 Peasants work with great effort and sweat in bringing stone for use in construction or for cutting from the mountains (+3 stone)
100 Freemen delve into the plentiful riverlands. There they hunt, they net, they harpoon and trap. They forage and gather, and harvest wild crops. (+4 food)
100 Freemen spend time amongst the wise, the elderly, and the faithful, learning the ways of their culture, faith, and traditions, exploring the concepts which have led the Ravarii to their prosperity- becoming adopted amongst the scholars.
100 Artisans ply their trades and sell their wares in the urban district. Trade is not a zero-sum game, and the tribe grows weaker as unwanted is exchanged for desired. (+1 Wealth)
100 Scholars enjoy less active forms of gathering food in the riverlands- from fishing and netting to visiting areas of fruit bushes and trees that they have encouraged the growth of over the past years. (+4 food). In times of rest, they seek greater understanding about the very nature of the world itself- how it works, and what does what and why- they search for Scientific Knowledge.

Alikos, Iron Gate of Godhome
Year 2 in the Time of Wonder

“Stone is a fickle mistress, my dear Perpheas - though the same chisel is used for all kinds of shaping, it is how and where you apply the hammer that can change the very nature of your effect. Let us use a simple split as an example.”

The weary mason Anthistes led a lengthy lecture for his doe-eyed apprentice - the Speaker had ordered a tripling of the city’s stonecutting capabilities in as many years, which meant young blood like Perpheas would be taking up their own shops much earlier than Anthistes had anticipated. I had intended for him to take over my shop, the old man lamented with a sigh, disguised by a grunt of effort as he lifted a block of stone onto his workbench. But perhaps it’s better this way.

“I am using my very same chisel and hammer as every day, no trickery afoot here. With the force of a child, un-Proven-” The hammer pinged off the back of the chisel, and a small shard of stone flew off into a dark corner of the room. “-the stone cracks in some direction unaligned to your intent. Too strong a blow, from a brute with only power as his tool?” With a mighty swing of the hammer, the stone shatters out from the chisels path, leaving a pile of jagged rocks on the table. “Just as the berserker forsakes finesse and control for power, so too is it the case here. Only with the proper strike of a learned man…” Anthistes heaves a new block onto the table, taking a moment to breathe before readying his hammer.

Crack!

A jagged line splits the stone block in twain - hardly a clean break, but the cut follows the direction of the man’s chisel almost perfectly.

“...can one truly become a master of stone.”

Turn Two of the Ravarii

For the Ravarii people to be able to grow in number it would be necessary for them to make advances in their understanding of the world around them, and so it would be that the scholarly amongst the people would continue to study, not just about the world around them, but even attempt to learn about the nature of learning itself. Some amongst them would be dutybound to gather food for the community, but others sought the ways of arcana. The gift of the Merciful Ones. A way to access the spiritual power the Merciful Ones had left in the land they gifted to the Ravarii having lived in it for as long as they had.

Others realised that fundamentally, expansion required more resources, more wealth, more value to be taken from the gifted land. So it would be that more stone would be brought down from the mountains to be cut. Perhaps one day soon the people may begin to live in stone and wooden houses, and already there were those amongst the skilled masons and carpenters who were considering the best designs in terms of practicality, keeping the houses warm, and the best use of resources.

In terms of construction, yet more effort was applied towards training up masons and stonecutters, and there was also increasing amounts of labour put towards clearing land aside, and laying the foundations for, the construction of a creche. This would be an area where the community could with more ease care for the children of all at large, freeing up additional labour, and sharing the duties of life.

Where Thusnelda the Kind-Hearted spent most of her time however was in the construction of a shine to honour the Merciful Ones, and the ancestors of the Ravarii people. Here sacrifices, libations, and dedications would be made. Here, future generations would be blessed and rewarded for how her own generation had honoured and thanked the Merciful Ones for the gifts they had given the people. Yes, this was a most important time for the Ravarii.

It was the beginning of a new era for the people of Ravar.

Xcotl

Within the first two years, the people built up their homes anon. With the Sky Rider greeting them more than the whispers that Xantipak used to hear. The Muxpei haven't been reconnected in generations. The mysteries of the blood forgotten from the minds of man. Many of the scholars who were descendants of these blood priests were no more than mundane wisemen. Even with them trying to pick and disturb the graves of the Giant Bones, they seek to try and figure out the gods plan, something that could help them reconnect with the Grave.

At the very least, the explorers have found interesting things. Black rocks that help make fires burn and tubers guarded by howling creatures that resemble a shaggy man. Many of the explorers were only armed with cudgels and bone weapons carved from the Bulls. They didn't want to try and mess with the Shaggy Men. So, they left them alone and reported on what they found. The Immortal of Xcotl had ordered to go towards the mountain, see if there's any metal that could be of use in the mountains.

Back home, with the huts made, the soldiers have gone about helping with the food gathering as there were no enemies and the needs of the people for housing were met for now. The peasantry have sought to go build a paddock so that the Brazen Bulls can be placed for both food and sacrifice. As these holy beasts of the field were the ones who would help the People of Blood go back to their profane gods, and bring back the magic that they so needed.

Starting resources: Brazing bulls, Pricklepears, Plums, Giant bones.

Year 102 of the Star-Count Ends
Turn 2

Image

Tachi-na-Vao: Try as they might, the wisest of Tachi-na-Vao have yet to truly master the art and technique of shearing. Their bleating charges are the ones that must shoulder the blame, they insist – for the Lac-horses, though loyal companions and trusty steeds, are ill at ease with their shaggy coats at the mercy of Vao blades. Considering this, and many other petty grievances also, the people of Nha Tachi have grown grumbly. Most bemoan the long hours of sweat and toil, be it in the fields or the workshops, and others betray resentment at their overlords for their perceived lack of care. Simple complaints, perhaps – but worrisome. For a people’s voice is dangerous when charged with wrath.

The Huang: There is much to celebrate for the Huang. The knowledge of Childbirthing – the caring for prospective mothers both before and after their quickening – and the child also, have been established. This, surely, is for the good of all. In other news, wanderers out of some distant western land have arrived at the city - and petitioned the Sovereign of Heaven for funds to make their homes therein. They are strange a strange folk, pale of skin and yellow of eye, but seem man-like enough, if queer. Should homes be built for them, and three Wealth provided, these Freemen will cease their wanderings and join their might to the Huang.

The Valdani: Fearlessly do the men of Valda set forth to plunder the ruins of ancient Suzer. Dead and silent have these lain since the city’s fall – yet soon, the work of many do indeed unearth something. Behind a muddy storeroom wall, a dozen queer stone jars are hauled from a small culvert – their cloth seals still intact. Inside, their contents are a thin, fruity liquid the color of burnt blood. Its taste is as foul as poison – but its after-effects surprising, and pleasant enough to gladden the hearts of any brave enough to imbibe! This, along with other trinkets and a few unsettling iron friezes, leave the explorers with at least 2 Wealth and 1 Wine for their efforts. But from where, oh where, could the folk of Suzer have gained such goods? Whatever the case, these events have set minds abuzz and tongues wagging. In the hard-man dives along the River of Kings, men ponder aloud at what other treasures might lie hidden beneath their feet. Did not the culvert have other tunnels sprawling from it? Other, more cautious heads, insist that such ventures are unwise. Suzer may be fallen, but to disturb their buried catacombs? No. Nothing good can come of such ventures. -2 Stability until the turn’s end.

Xcotl: Sometimes, it is said, a good answer reveals more questions than it actually answers. This is certainly the case when it comes to the contents of the mighty boneyards that litter the shallower parts of the Xcotl’s marshy home. The bones therein are pliable enough once dried, and enterprising artisans have already made beautiful carvings from several samples – sure to fetch wealth and admiration at market. Yet Xcotl’s scholars have other concerns. Should the bloody magic of their ancestors be known to them again – such sorcery would no doubt be well aided by idols and carvings of blessed bone. Such, at least, are their theories.

North into the mountains trek Xcotl’s bold exploreres. The land rises here, up and off the riverland plains, into breathtaking views worthy of song. Just below the treeline, a smattering of shallow grottos hold mushrooms of surprising girth – brown and cave-slick. Farther up, seams of a grey, stormy ore give the explorers pause – for such a metal is known to them. Yet these news fade in comparison to what the explorers see in the shallow mountain streams, just below the snowcaps. Flakes and nuggets - yellow, pale, and glistening. Like gold.

Alikos: To order a man is simple – but to order many? To shape and command the efforts of many hands and many minds in such a way that they work as one, to the beat of a single drum and the will of a single purpose? – that is a matter far more complex. It is also a matter the clever minds of Alikos have come to know. Mass Labor is revealed to them.

The Ravarii: A system of checks, notes, balances and – above all – the evaluation of any discovery by ones capable peers. This the wisest of the Ravarii have compiled into a simple, comprehensible system. A tool, they claim, of honest inquiry and Scientific Knowledge. Long may it aid them. All is not well with the followers of the Merciful Ones, however. A grim and terrible portent have been seen by many – stalking even the very outskirts of their humble city. A queer, flower-faced lizard-terror stalks the land, said to feast on children and lone hunters both. It must be fought, all men agree – or perhaps it is better to simply wait until it leaves of its own volition! Surely, braving its flowery might is a venture not meant for mortal men. While the brave debate, all attempts at hunting and harvesting from the local area with have reduced effects – as all wildlife flees.

Aederfolk: This year is a quiet one for the scions of the House of Gwyr. And that is something to be thankful for – as no news is, in the end, good news.

Learned Patience and Piety

The Shrine of the Three-in-One, Valda
Second of Harvest Moon, Year One Hundred Four of the Reckoning

Eldest among equals, Valerian, stood while the other two sat. Eldest he may be, but the gray sneaking into his beard and infiltrating his temples had not dimmed his fire. He paced back and forth, his hands clasped firmly behind his back, listening without comment as Marcus, the youngest, spoke in measured tones.

"We must have faith. The Father will reveal to us, in time, the secrets of his creation. This was his promise unto us. It would betray inconstancy to turn our hearts elsewhere, when he laid this charge upon us already."

Gallus, the middle, spoke forcefully, his fingers drumming on the crumbling marble plinth that had been incorporated into the amphitheater surrounding the sanctuary.

"Wisdom is to seek after that is known, certainly, but we must also be practical. Learned men speak of what they hope, not what they are sure of - this is the province, and ordained to them. But we as men of stone and iron must seek surety above all else, and hope oftentimes proves hollow. It could be a month, or a year, or a century before the Men of the Tower feel confident in their methods and precepts. And yet every month brings more stillborn infants into this mortal world, more wives and sisters laid to rest in the halls of stone to wait the immortal day."

Valerian raised a hand, cutting off the other Hierarch.

"This we know. This we have always known. It is a price of our Fall, that children come forth in pain. We can no more stop such suffering than we can make the wolf graze."

The blonde-haired Gallus pressed forward, perceiving a chink his opponent's rhetorical armor.

"We cannot stop it, no. But we can ease it. Grace is given to us, in part, to lessen the effects of the First Iniquity, ever since the Son came forth to teach us how to live as better than beasts and barbarians. If we turn the efforts of the Tower thence, we do his work in this world, even so."

Ultimately, as they argued, the sun rode high over noon-meal, and then sank still toward the east, bespeaking the close of the day. Anon men and women began to file into the furthest reaches of the shrine, preparing for evening prayer, and the Hierarchs were forced to conclude their meeting with no resolution. Two to one, they continued to back the independent study of the Tower of Wisdom, though some grumbled against such ivory-white learning with little practical value.

Of the strange Suzerian drink, and the catacombs, little changed. There was wisdom in listening to the caution of the elders, and time was taken to review the artifacts retrieved from the depths, to determine if ought of a curse or dark force may lay upon them. The Valdani did not fear such things, having been loosed from those burdens by the coming of the God-Clothed, but curses oftentimes held real warnings of real dangers, and it would be foolhardy, not merely brave, to ignore misgivings of the spirit.

The Hue

It has been many moons since the Hue came to this place. Fleeing that accursed demon, and now the Hue live here along the Uji river and in their new homeland. So far, the Hue has not had any trouble here, the river clean, the land free of any threat, and here they have been thriving. Maybe even better than in their own homeland, but that is something that few would speak about. Since it is told how great their old homeland was and saying that their new homeland is better. Is pretty much an insult to their ancestors and those that died to that demon. Regardless, the settlement of Ngai, their first and capital city, is alive and well.

The short black-haired, and brown eyed, high chieftain Thach is busy overlooking the landscape from his balcony in the royal palace. A descendant of the first high chieftain of the Hue, Uyen, a strong and talented. woman. It was because of her that the Hue first settled and laid the foundation for the Hue to thrive. A legacy of being a great leader and one known for steering the Hue toward a better future. A legacy that is now on his shoulders now that the last high chieftain, his mother is dead, and Thach became the new high chieftain.

A legacy that Thach hopes to be able to live up to. Now the destiny of the Hue is in his hands and to say that it is stressful for him is without a doubt. But he knows that this is his weight to carry and already he is working with his builders about new homes for the Hue since there is an overcrowded problem in Ngai and housing is very limited right now. A problem that Thach thinks will be resolved soon with their resources are well enough to support such a task. Still, this is his first year as high chieftain, and all he can do now is wait and see what problems come their way. And hopes and pray that he can do what he can to weather any coming storm, either small or big. That is his duty to the Hue and to his family's legacy. Time to see if Thach is capable like the ones that came before him and have the Hue continue to thrive.

"They smell bad." Qian Tai said in a matter-of-fact tone. King Wei Liang looked at Qian Tai with a disapproving expression as if that truly mattered at all when it didn't.

As distasteful as Qian Tai's remark was, he was not lying, in truth these foreigners did smell something foul, having traveled for leagues without bathing. They looked strange, they smelled strange, and they sounded strange. The Huang had interacted with other tribes even warred with such tribes, but those other tribes at least look similar to them, had similar customs and beliefs, and spoke tongues that were intelligible.

The Xi people, or western people however were completely different. Not to mention the queer yellow eyes they possessed. When the Hao asked why they traveled to the lands of the Middle Kingdom they shuddered in fear.

"A black tornado from the heavens... red lightning and...and... I am sorry I cannot say anymore." The elder of the tribe stated trying his best not to shake. The tribe came from a great plains' region, a land of endless grass countless leagues away from the Middle Kingdom. They herded four legged beasts and rode like the wind, but their lands were destroyed in a great calamity and they lost their heavenly beasts in the maelstrom as well as most of their kindred.

King Wei Liang who now had the support of Heaven weighed his options. He felt sympathy for these western people. As long as they proved themselves to be of harmonious character they would be welcomed in the Celestial Kingdom. In time they would become one with the Huang people. There were a few of his advisors who disagreed with him of course but that is human nature for men to disagree and argue about what course was best to take.

The Idlers

The Foothills of the Congvao
Thang Xuan, Thirty-Second Day

Danh son Quan Ha, chosen overseer of the stone gatherers, looked over at his work crew in confusion.

There had been many issues as of late - quiet grumbling behind closed doors, lower yields, men “falling sick” and “harassed by evil spirits” at a much higher rate than average. He had gone door to door yesterday, criticizing his overseers for their poor performance. It reflected badly upon their honor for the men to be missing, he argued, and they had nodded in agreement. He had thought that enough to solve the issue.

In a way, it had. All of the stone gatherers had indeed all shown up today. Roughly a hundred men sat around the hill in small circles, chatting idly and relaxing. A few were playing Tsun Yut, a game where men competed to toss round stones as close to a central stone as possible. It was a beautiful day - thick clouds blanketed the sky, and a gentle breeze stroked the ground. And yet...not a single one of the workers was working.

As he surveyed this dreadful sight, two of the nearest overseers noticed him, and dutifully approached, faces pointing towards the ground in deference.

“Lin Yen! Lin Lam!” Danh chided, gesturing towards the working men. “What is the meaning of this?”

Yen, a man in his later middle age with sinewy arms and a long beard, knelt to the ground.

“Ten Danh,” he said calmly, “the men are overworked. I have given them the day off.”

Lam nodded. He was the younger of the two, a stout man with broad shoulders. A large hat woven from reeds adorned his head, and he chewed idly on the rind of a psarmelon.

“Their hearts swell with anger.” he said, spitting the seeds onto the ground. “The men have worked long and hard for over two working seasons now. But where are our periods of rest? Where are our festivals? They ask me these things, and I have no answer. And we toil to produce wealth for Ten Toda, not for the greater good of the people.”

“Indeed,” Yen chimed back in. “I apologize for our failure, and accept the proper shame. Our honor is indeed marred for our inability to control our lessers - but I value the wellbeing of my subordinates more than my honor. May you discipline us as you see fit.” he said.

It was an indirect challenge. Yen was deferential, yes, and acknowledging his failure - but he did not feel shame for it. A proper apology came with answers and a solution. This was simply a statement.

Danh scratched his head. Ten Toda wouldn’t be happy with this. Toda was the current patriarch of the Thi Family, the largest amongst the six families that made up the tribe, and thus the chief of the Tachi people. He was an ambitious man, formerly an enforcer of the laws, and eagerly sought progress regardless of the consequences. Many had grown discontent with his rule - he was a restless man, stalking from project to project with intensity and passion. He would be popular with the later generations, perhaps - but at the cost of the anger of the present.

A greater good, brought through a smaller evil. A classic tenet of Tachi philosophy. But philosophy was just that…ideas. It did not always translate so well to the flesh and blood of reality.

“Very well.” Danh sighed, and his foremen sighed in relief. “Let the men rest.”

Bending over, he lifted a hefty stone to his shoulder, hefting it in a single mighty movement.

“But let them see the ways of a man worthy of authority.” he finished, piercing the two with an admonishing glare. Leading by example was the surest way to respect. If his foremen had to be reminded through demonstration? So be it.

The Wages of Sweat

White Hills, Valda
Eighth of Last Seed, Year One Hundred Four of the Reckoning

In long ages past, the gods of Suzer had given to their beloved the White Hills, the Tranquiline Halls, which stood watch over their fair city. From these hills had come iron, their most treasured servant, and stone, which laid the foundations for their proud temples and edifices.

And the God-Clothed had come, leading his chosen, the men of Valda. The pagan deities of the ancients had risen against his might, and fallen. Their worshippers had wailed and gnashed their teeth, despaired and thrown themselves against the blades of the Valdani, and they too had fallen. Their temples had been pulled down, their statues destroyed, their holy places desecrated for the dens of iniquity and perfidy they were.

And thus they had passed from history, ghosts now and bones, and vanished.

But the Valdani had remained. The White Hills, peaceful and sublime, now turned to a new purpose. Where ancient men had placed high seats and burned offerings to their false gods the people of the City of Iron sweated and labored, cutting down into the bones of the earth, their eyes no longer toward the sky and the gods but the fundament of the world their Father had given to them for dominion.

Many of the tools the sons of the city wielded in their work were little better than the instruments of savages, heavy stone mauls resisting the beating, adzes of flint scraping away the skin of the hills to lay bare the gray flesh beneath. But some were burnished iron, and they bit the deepest, hewing from the layers of rock and stone free boulders which would be broken, chiseled, and graven into many forms for the use of Valda, Queen of Cities.

The ancient gods must weep to see their gift so ill used. But those vanished shades of dead men's faith could no more trouble the living than could their worshippers return from the grave to contest with the victorious Three. Thus it was in Valda, and thus was as it should be.

Alikos, Iron Gate of Godhome
Year 4 in the Time of Wonder

The wails of child and mother alike formed a strange sort of chorus in the Birthhome of the Iron Gate. Each was a cause for joy across the entire city - one more future Proven before the gods, though it would be decades before they were yet ready for such an honor.

Just across the broad river that split the burgeoning city in two, dozens of men clambered about a structure of wood and stone. The truly massive building was set to be the first smithy of Alikos - the works that the artisans claimed would be possible upon its completion were simply too significant to ignore, though the Proven as a community remained skeptical.

No matter - with time under Akrates’ eyes, the Proven would surely prosper.

With time, labor. From labor, strength. In strength, honor. In honor, prosperity.

Xcotl

The exploration of the mountains of the north brought more mysteries of their area than any answers. For Xantipak, he has been given immortality, but he still had the mind of a human. However, he has even questioned his immortality as he felt himself slowly slip away as the years go by. His unnatural youth no longer there as the connections to their bloodthirsty gods were not there. Even with the scholars comprehending the power of the giant bones, the people were still hesitant. They were not prepared for the expenses of the Blood Thirsters. For as powerful as the magic given to them, so too was great the price.

But the Immortal One was a patient man. Born 100 years as a young boy, now the elder priest. He knows the power of patience and his sense of time. Even as he orders the people to prepare more paddocks as the final one is done, the scholars try to learn about childberthing. The techniques needed to help the mothers bring about the new generation of able bodies for the sake of being ready for when the connection of the Muxpei is restored.

Until then, the world around them is mysterious and more exploration was needed. This time, going south of them beyond more of the fertile flatland and opposite of the mountains with mysteryious ore and golden wealth. They can't figure out the ocean, but they can at least understand about the nearby lands around them.

Starting resources: Brazing bulls, Pricklepears, Plums, Giant bones.

Year 104 of the Star-Count Ends
Turn 3

Image

The winters have been unseasonably long as of late. Men shield their eyes against a pale, diminished sun - and huddle by their fires. On the seas, fierce winds whip the blue expanse into white-capped fury. Yet spring, in the end, does come – and blossoms into pale but welcome summer. If the seasons should change to make this the norm, the gods must surely be ill-pleased!

The Valdani: Strangers have come to Valda – queer of garb and foreign of mien. A smattering of worn men and road-wary women – armed with iron and riding strange, hump-backed beasts. They claim themselves a caravan, or the remnants of one, originating from a kindred some distance to the west – beyond a river they name ‘the Tap’. They beg the assistance of the sons of Valda – aid for their wounded and the protection of their warriors – against the depredations of ruffians. Skin-hunters. Head-takers. Chimulans. If the Valdani would escort them back to their city – a journey that will likely take a season – they insist that their king, the ‘gallant Wadi-Maru’ will be most generous in his reward. While wise men might agree or disgree on this subject - there are good news from The Tower. A system of certain scientific inquiery, they insist, have finally been agreed upon. Men of iron may well shrug at this, but all who welcome truth - for truth's sake - will surely appreciate such news.

The Hue: Calm and quiet are the days of the Hue. Dull and slow for some, perhaps – but wise men know, and clever crones concur, that calm and quiet is preferable to the alternative. There is only one note of oddity. In late spring, strange figures are spotted on the outskirts of Ngai. They are shadows in the underbrush and fading footsteps on the hill-paths - gone when looked for. Are these mere wanderers? Or other interlopers entirely? Time, to be sure, will make light of all - and muddy waters, if left for a while, will settle.

The Huang: To deal with foreign folk on your doorstep is one thing - indeed, the scions of the House of Hao have shaped the Huang from a generous medley of tribes and peoples - but this? No, this is something else. To invite strangers into your city? Strangers as strange as the Xi? Pah, pah again and thrice pah. In this manner the commons may grumble – but the course of the Huang is set. And for now, at least, all is well. Smelly and queer the Xi might be, but the King of Heaven has spoken. By Wei Liang’s decree, the largesse of the Huang are extended to the one-time plainsmen.

Tachi-na-Vao: Foreigners are also the talk amongst the Vao this year. Scouts report spotting bands of them – robed men and spear-armed handlers – traversing the Congvao’s shallows to the south. They have yet to surmise the Tachi-na-Vao’s existence, apparently – but should they trek farther north it would only be a matter of time. Their numbers are not many – and mayhaps swift action could end a threat to the Vao before it even materialized? Others, however, council caution – for these strangers are not yet enemies. And perhaps they need not be.

In any case - alas, to add insult to injury, or at least disappointment to mystery, the secret of shearing still continue to elude the Vao’s wisest. Surely, they insist, a breakthrough must be close at hand – for it is merely a matter of technique! For now, however – the Lac-horse continue their stubborn resistance; shaggy coats sacred to the touch of mortal shears.

Xcotl: With songs and gentle massages, with herbal draughts and many a swift but clever technique – the knowledge of childbirthing has come to Xcotl.

To the south, Xcotl’s bravest have entered once more into a flat, grassy land. A floodplain, this – swept by sea-winds and flowing with reeds as tall as grown men. Deposits of the same cloudy-gray ore found in previous years are evident here – and elsewhere, in the white coastal shallows, banks of fat, black-and-brown sweetkelp prove far tastier than one might expect. Tall, flightless birds wade here also – mean of eye and bright of feather. Clever artisans could do much and more with plumage from these cretins – but it would need be bought in blood.

Alikos: In time, labor. The seasons pass in relative silence for the Guardians of Godhome. Prosper the Proven certainly will – for the omens are well in their favor – but as far as the art of writing goes? It is as difficult as navigating the thickets of a strange yet familiar language – and never mind the fact that all men speak it, all day every day. It is, to put it bluntly, a struggle. In other news, both the wise of Alikos and the public eye have lately become enamored by a great young orator. He is obviously ambitious, and – what is more - rapidly gaining the favor of the rabble. Although he has yet to actually disparage Alikos’ elites, he has hardly voiced support for their endeavors either. What, if anything, should be done about this?

The Aederfolk: Quiet comfort is still the lot of the Aederfolk. Seasons follow seasons, young follow the old, and life - in its way - is as it always has been.

Ravarii: These years are tense ones for the people of Ravar. What hunting happens is organized with care and conducted with caution, routes carefully planned and every man and woman alert to danger - stony mauls and fire-hardened spears at the ready. It is a relief then, as autumn follows summer follows winter, when the flower-faced lizard-beast finally lumbers on. North, some say - to lands unknown. Its tracks are no longer found by errant hunters, its old haunts empty. Whatever this horror sought in the lands of the Ravarii - be it sustenance or something else entirely? - it has moved its presence elsewhere. And for that, at least, many mothers and fathers are no doubt thankful.

The Strangers

The Chieftain's Hall
Thang Nhiet, Twelfth Day

“I say we strike first!” proclaimed the lawman Shiro son Da Banh, his sturdy hands clasped tight on a stone-tipped spear. “We are many and they are few. Other men are all soulless devils, seeking to take our land. Time has proven this over and over.”

“If we struck first against unknowing strangers without knowledge of their motives…would that not make us devils as well?” the monk Hy son Dai Quy interjected, raising a finger.

Shiro scowled, clearly annoyed at the objection. “Do you ask a fish if it will swim or a bird if it shall fly? No. We know that those things are and what they do. Likewise, we know what bandits are and what they shall do. There is a time and a place for philosophy and a time and place for action.” he said, thumping the butt of his spear on the ground for emphasis. "This is a time for action!"

“Calm yourself, Lin Shiro. Lin Hy makes a good point.” stated Toda son Hurong Thi, silencing the room. The chieftain was a rather unassuming man, despite his status. There was little that distinguished him from the other men in the room - no crown, no great stature, no regal robes or royal scepter. Just a tired-looking middle-aged man with graying hair. The weight of responsibility was no small burden for a single man to carry.

In the Tachi religion, when a man died, their good deeds were weighed against their evil deeds upon a scale. If the scale was balanced on the side of good, they would pass on to the next life. If the scale balanced onto the side of evil, they would be destroyed. But not all men were treated equally by the Sun Deity Vao - the more responsibility and power a man held, the heavier the wicked deeds weighed in comparison to the good. An evil king could do much greater harm than an evil fisherman, and thus the king was held to a higher standard. It was not uncommon for the chiefs of the Tachi to resign upon catching an illness or growing gray hair - to die as chieftain was a risky endeavor indeed!

“We cannot strike preemptively.” Toda sighed, sitting cross legged on the woven rug. “I cannot afford the blood of innocents on my hands.”

“Your inaction will lead to the spilled blood of our own, cousin.” snarled Shiro in reply. “And that is far worse in the eyes of our gods.”

“We do not know that.” Hy said, putting his hand on Shiro’s shoulder. “I am not saying that you are wrong, Ten Shiro. Your passion and courage are noble and honorable, and these men likely do indeed come with greed in their hearts. But we must uncover the truth before taking actions that cannot be undone.”

“Hmf.” scoffed Shiro, pushing Hy’s hand off. “And how will that be done? Shall we send a man off to reason with those who do not speak our tongue? Shall we watch from afar as they intrude on our lands? Then it shall be too late to catch them by surprise when they do come!”

“I shall go amongst them.” Hy interrupted, and the room grew still. “If they are good, than I shall have averted slaughter. And if they are evil and I am slain? Then you will be justified in striking every last one of them down.” the monk finished calmly. The other elders looked curiously at Toda, awaiting his judgement of the proposal.

Toda thought for a moment.

“Honorable words from an honorable man.” Toda declared with finality after a few moments, clearly pleased with this outcome. “Very well, Shiro - you have an answer.”

Shiro shook his head at Hy in disgust.

“When you look down upon us from Heaven, know that you could have lived.” he retorted, before turning and leaving the dwelling.
