Japan prepares for war, poised to be military superpower

Postby El Lazaro » Tue Dec 06, 2022 11:13 am

Ok well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s technically true.

PM Fumio Kishida has decided on a defense spending hike of nearly 60% (16 trillion yen or $125 billion dollars) to Japan’s 2023-2027 budget, bringing Japan’s annual spending well over that of Russia. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party seeks to double the budget of the Self-Defense Forces within the next decade in response to mounting belligerence from Russia and China. 51% support the measure, and 42% all oppose it, according to a Japanese pollster.

Article 9 of the post-war constitution prohibits the use of war to settle international disputes, and prevents the existence of an offensive military. The LDP has previously advocated for the abolition of the article, and critics allege the new military plan - which would expand missile strike capabilities and bolster deterrence - is an unconstitutional violation of Japanese non-aggression. China has called the move a dangerous escalation and a threat to international peace, and Russia recently deployed missile defense systems to the disputed Kuril Islands.

So, NSG, thoughts? Is Japan justified in its military buildup? Is the region at risk, and why?

Personally, I believe America and its allies must be prepared against emerging totalitarian empires. Even if it jeopardizes the principle of pacifism, rebuilding the Japanese military is important for deterring a major war and curbing unprovoked aggression from the enemies of democracy.

Japan has no business spiking their military budget when they know they don't even have the manpower nor the resources to field such a larger army. That shit could be used for something else.

Japan is only reaching a new chapter of it's destiny. Like the apprentice becoming an equal master. The US forbid Japan from rearming after defeating them, then immediately asked Japan to forget about their silly or short sighted prohibition and rearm once the cold war got going, but Japan refused. Now they're seemingly finally ready to move beyond focusing only on economic progress.

Japan is effectively as rich as they're able to get, it is overdue to reinvest that money into their own defense and ambitions in that they've earned it. The alliance is still there, but now they're restoring their full sovereignty. This is not anything to fear. They'll be a splendid fellow power.

I do not trust the japanese with a bigger and stronger military, especially when Nippon Kaigi has a lot of power over the LDP.

I don’t think that’s the concern. I’m sure Japan will stay an American ally for the entire foreseeable future now. I just don’t like the escalation, and I also liked how Japan was pacifist as I’m a pacifist myself.

Japan has an agreement with both Taiwan and South Korea, if one is attacked, Japan will also attack the aggressor, Japan can and must rearm, to ensure peace in East Asia and also the order in the Pacific.

The disconnect between Liberal propaganda and the realities of Liberal foreign policy is astounding sometimes. Liberal warhawks have shown time and again they don't care about spreading Liberal ideology so much as they do ensuring the continued flow of capital to the benefit of corporate shareholders and the detriment of working class laborers. The West only opposes totalitarianism when said totalitarians are getting in the way of their profit margins. This has always been the case and will always be the case. It's pure copium to believe otherwise at this point.

Good to know.
Anyway, whatever Japan is up to, the current paradigm is self-defeating.
In the light of current events, the questionable character of some neighbors, and that the US is no longer a party of good faith in defense agreements, it is long past time for Japan to take off the collar and put more of its defense into its own hands.
At this juncture, a reinvigorated and autonomous Japanese military culture may work out better than in days past.

If this was supposed to be a "gotcha" it's a rather piss-poor attempt since the AR-15's association with mass shootings is erroneous. The majority of mass shootings involve handguns, and even for the ones that don't the AR-15 still doesn't stand out statistically.
