NationStates Tennis Tour indoor hard court season 8 RP thread

This thread will be the thread where roleplays and results will be posted for the NationStates Tennis Tour's indoor hard court season.

Scorination Details
All tournaments are scorinated on xkoranate. Singles tournaments have best of three tiebreak sets and doubles tournaments will be best of two sets with a match tiebreaker.

The logarithm ranking points are used. To determine the doubles seeding the average of the two doubles player's logarithmic rankings are used. Draws for both the singles and doubles competition are seeded. All roleplays are scored with quality over quantity emphasized. Multiple roleplays submitted on the same day will be counted as one larger whole. All players without ranking points will have a skill level equal to the lowest main draw player's logarithmic points, if that nation has roleplayed previously or in the tournament.

Where there are more entrants than available places, a knock-out qualification round is played. At the conclusion of each tournament, rankings are updated to reflect the new points earned by players. These points last one season.

Ubung Open or SSB Ubung Open for sponsorship reason, is an annual indoor hardcourt tennis competition sanctioned by NatioanStates Tennis Tour (NSTT). Held for the first time in 2020, this is the third installment of the competition. In this edition, the event is elevated from Tier-1 to Tier-1 Mandatory. As with the name, the city of Ubung is the host city of the competition.

ABOUT

Pemecutan or officially United Kingdom of Pemecutan is an islands country located in south central of Mandalanusa, part of a larger archipelagic group named Jambuvan Archipelago. A unitary state, it is consist of 4 constituent countries, Pamecutan, Kanginan, Petang Islands and Segaranusa. It also controlled 2 Crown Estates, Batubulan and Tandeg Suci and 1 Occupied territory, Gili Anakan which located in Cendana Islands. Ratu Hawir Bhuja is the head of state which literally means King of the Kings. The seat is currently vacant and fill by an interim leader entitled Ratu Panglingsir. The majority of the population are Girian ethnic (78%) with Jambuvan Malay as the largest minority (11%). It has 3 official languages, Hanacaraka (RL Balinese), Pemecutan Malay (RL Bahasa Indonesia) and Anglish (RL English). While Sanatana Dharma is the major religion (86%).

Ubung is located in the northern shore of Giri Island. It is the largest city in Pemecutan in term of population with around 1.5 millions people reside in the city. The city was incorporated in 1911, in the first wave of administrative changes in the country. It is created by merging 6 towns (locally named Pakraman) including Merta Gangga, Sedana Mertha, Ulun Pasih, Alas Petak, Baruna and Ubung itself. The city have been emerge as the economic powerhouse of the country with many companies have their headquarters there. The economy of the city is also supported by Port of Ubung (the busiest port in Pemecutan), cinematic and manufacturing industry among others. Ubung is also divided by two rivers, Tampak River in the east and Gangga River to its west.

THE VENUE

As with the previous edition, Ubung Open organizer use Gangga Assembly Hall as the venue. A multipurpose building, Gangga Assembly Hall is located in Merta Gangga Town in the northwest of the city near Gangga Beach, one of tourism spot in Ubung. The venue is a complex of two main buildings, Gangga Center (the larger) and Segara Hall. Some changes are made following the third edition. These including court number and size.

Six courts will be develop in Gangga Center. The Main Hall will be hosted the Main Court which for this event will be name Baruna Court. The court is accommodate with 2,500 seats. The other 5 courts will be placed at the east and west wing of the hall with a capacity of 1,000 seats each. These courts is numbered from Gangga-1 to Gangga-5. A media center will also be build for the press. While in Segara Hall, the second main court is established. Located at the center point of Segara Hall, the court which is named Jukung Court is holding 2,000 seats. Another 3 courts are established at the side hall. These courts can accommodate a maximum of 1,000 seats. It is named as Segara-1 through Segara-3. A media center is also placed in Segara Hall to accommodate the coverage in the hall. With the new setting, the venue is holding 10 courts or 2 courts short from the last edition.

Players that come via air will be arriving at Ubung International Airport which is around 11 km south of Ubung city center. From here, they will be escorted by private vehicle to their resting place at The Bale Ubung Hotel or Ubung Jineng Hotel. Both hotels are within close distance to the venue.

SINGLE COMPETITION

A total of 56 competitors are confirmed at the end of the signing period. With this numbers, no qualifying round will be held. And no wildcard is given. All 56 players are automatically start the competition from the First Round (or Round 56). The exception would be the top 8 seeds which will starting their match in the Second Round (or Round 32). DOUBLE COMPETITION

There are a total of 30 players confirmed to participate this edition. With this numbers, 2 qualifying spots are given. And there are 3 wildcards given. After the qualifying round, all players will be starting the event proper. The exception would be the top 4 seeded pairs which will starts the competition from the second round. International Tennis Trophy

The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association is proud to present the sixth edition of the International Tennis Trophy. Held at the end of the indoor hard court season, this unique format where players compete for their country is the last opportunity for players to earn points for the NSTT Finals. The event is jointly hosted by the cities of Prescott and Somer.

About Electrum and Prescott
Electrum is a sports-mad country. It loves its Olympics and its football, but the most important sport is tennis. Tennis in Electrum is administered by the all-powerful Electrum Lawn Tennis Association.

There are a few quirks when coming to Electrum. One of them is its digital currency, the Synergy, which is known for its ubiquity. Upon arrival, all people can gain access to the card based digital currency, but tourists often complain that these cards which are very easily stolen but also incredibly convenient to use. Electrum is also a relaxed country -- it has very socially libertarian laws such as the decriminalisation of all drugs. It's a place to let off some steam and to have some fun.

Prescott is a city nestled in the north-western ski slopes of Electrum and is the closest city to Electrum’s highest peak, the Jarangal - Mt. Nixon mountain (The mountain is dual named in recognition of the local name for the mountain). There are four million Prescottians who are ready to cheer on their favourite nations at the ITT. It is an icy-cold city, but known for its whiskey and rum dispensed in the many pubs dotted across the city, you can be sure your heart will be warmed up quite quickly.

Somer is a major city facing the Endemien Sea and is known for its eternally sunny days, its golden beaches and theme parks of both the dry and wet variety. It is Electrum's family city, and swells in population every summer with a tourist town reputation more than anything. However, in recent years, the population has increased due to its beachside skyscrapers making living affordable. Somers (the demonym) are also known to frequent the Sandy Coast, a long thirty-kilometre stretch of beaches on the sea. The richer part of town live in the old quarter which is on the North side of the Sandy Coast, where the beach meets the steep hills of the old quarter.

Playing Conditions
The Ice Palace in Prescott and the Somersville Convention Centre will play host to the International Tennis Trophy. All matches will be held on Centre Court which has a capacity of 15,000. All matches are held either in the morning, or at twilight, with Group A and B matches held in Prescott and Group C and D in Somer. Groups A and C will play on the first matchday, Groups B and D on the alternating day.

Draws and Schedule
Format
16 nations will participate in four groups of four. Nations will be ranked on the sum of the log points of their best two submitted singles athletes and the best doubles pair. Teams will then be drawn from four pots to make the four groups. Group winners and runners up advance to the quarterfinals (tiebreakers are matches won, then set percentage, then games percentage).

Each matchday will consist of three rubbers -- two singles matches (top ranked players play against each other, second ranked players play against each other) and one doubles match. All rubbers will be played, and rankings points are available for winning. Winning in later rounds and winning against higher ranked opponents will yield more points. There is a maximum of 1,500 points up for grabs.

Snow is already starting to appear in the higher towns in the north. But in Kasandora no snow falls naturally. There is no ski season here, so the focus is on tennis.

Kasandora Open presented by Neufloor takes place this week in the city, bringing tennis players from all over the world to the country. It's a Tier 2 event, so that means we won't see people of the calibre of Heraklit, Granit, Rederer. But it's still an opportunity, especially for national athletes among the Top Seeds like Anne Valens and the sibling pair Filipe Korf and Stella Bressen. The Arena Neufville could be their place of consecration, a step up on the world tennis scale.

In any case, on the first day we won't see any of the national hopefuls, and neither will the Neufville Arena. The Qualifiers will have three other athletes from Lisander trying to reach the Round of 32, plus two more matches, one of them doubles. The first five matches will be played on Court 1 of the Convention Centre, adjacent to the tournament's main venue.

Information for Tourists: Metro Kasandora unfortunately does not serve the Neufville area, which is served by ETK trams. To get to the tournament, transfer between metro and tram at Basses West station. As everyday, the transfer is free as long as you keep your ticket or have the transaction stored in your LSiD, but for the duration of Kasandora Open, Tickets for Matches or the Event Pass will also be accepted to board Metro, Trams or to transfer between both.

A Second Second Chance

Ingrid Dal had been down. Properly down. Not the way you sometimes say, “oh man, I’ve been feeling kind of down lately.” No, the kind of down where you alternate not getting out of bed for three weeks with not sleeping and constantly obsess over your own shortcomings for two. Tennis was her life. Being a tennis player was her whole plan. It was her and Sibylla, and they were going to conquer the world. And now Sibylla was halfway there, winning matches and reaching finals. And where was she? About a quarter from absolute rock bottom. Dark days, the months after she lost her Tier 2 spot to that stupid “wholesome” Sigrid and that flat-faced northern mountain monkey Zapfe. Dark days indeed.

And then it happened, she got a second chance when Dorotea mysteriously vanished for three months and Sibylla got bumped to Tier 1 status. And how had she handled it? Fucking ridiculously. She just wanted to crawl under a rock after that early exit. Destroy her racquets and hide forever. And then it happened again. Stupid goddamn Sigrid Vasakärven fucking shocked the world by winning in Britonisea and slicing her way to a Grand Slam final. Making her ineligible for Tier 2 competition, of course, with all those fancy points. So “good old” Ingrid got the call. Well, I guess you can play, pretty much everyone is doing pretty good so there’s a spot open if you want to embarrass yourself again. You know what’s worse than being a mediocre player on the international circuit? Being a mediocre player from one of the top tennis nations.

But she decided to do it. Swallow all that self-pity and -loathing. Qualifications? Sure, it hurt a little that she still had to do qualifications. But never mind that. A second second chance, your don’t get too many of those. Scott Durin. She could take him.

Kyrsten Fletcher sighed as she fell back onto her hotel bed. Today had not been a very good day for her. She had needed to perform at this tournament here in Kasandora, this was her chance to prove herself, and she'd blown it. Before the tournament questions of retirement had already been bogging her after a string of tough losses in early rounds. The prevailing sentiment among many had been that while at one point she had been the best tennis player in the country, that she'd grown too old, and that especially with a crop of up and coming young developing new players, that she was taking up a valuable spot at tournaments that could be reserved for these new young players. She even suspected that the Head of the Hopalian Tennis Association Michael Bach was preparing to ask her to step aside. While she had her supporters, most thought that her time was up, and while she didn't want to admit it, at 32 years-of-age, her body was starting to wear down from all the years of tennis, and perhaps she wasn't what she once was. She didn't know what she would do if she were asked to step aside, but she knew she didn't want to retire. She didn't know what she would do if she were to retire, tennis had been all she had known up to this point; playing tennis had been all she had known up to this point. But the question of retirement had followed her, at every tournament she went to, after every early tournament loss that she'd endured, the question of retirement came up, and it only came up more as the losses kept on racking up. Her agent (a rare thing for Hopalian athletes, as Hopal lived under a socialist economy, with the government taking care of an athlete's every need, and with no domestic sports leagues, and thus no need for Sports Agents), Mike Langley had warned her that he believed that a retirement ask was coming from Michael Bach if she didn't perform at the Indoor Hard Court Circuit. This tournament, the Kasandora Open, he warned her was her main and possibly only chance if she wanted to prove herself. A Tier 2 tournament, it didn't have all of the star players from across the multiverse, leaving the lower-ranked players hoping to prove themselves in order to climb that ladder that is international tennis. If she was going going to prove herself, it would be here.

But she blew that chance, losing in what was quite a decisive game against Sharktail. Her body just wouldn't let her do the things that she used to be able to do, she had less energy, stamina, speed, agility, all of the wells of things you need to win a tennis game was drying up within her. And the questions of her retirement, kept coming up over and over again, and this was her one chance to prove herself to them all, and she had just blew that chance, and she had just loss this game, and her just wouldn't cooperate anymore, and perhaps her body just wasn't up to playing tennis, at least at this level anymore, and she just might have to retire, and she just didn't know what to do after, and all just came rushing back in a sea of troubles to her the moment she loss that game. And she had a mental breakdown, right there on that court in Kasandora. A 32-year-old veteran of the game breaking down on the court after losing a FIRST ROUND match in a Tier 2 tournament, how embarrassing, she thought. She was barely able to compose herself to congratulate to her opponent before she ran into the locker room, staying in there for close to an hour before her doubles match against a pair from Dod Rava. While she and her doubles partner had won their match, she barely contributed, in idle dream throughout the entirety of the match.

Her phone had lit up with notifications the whole time after that Singles Match: old friends reaching out to her, trying to make sure she was okay, questions over her performance on social media, her agent berating her over text. She was too tired to deal with this, she thought, and she threw her phone across the room in a fit of anger. She crashed back down into her bed, trying to cover her face with a pillow, wishing to hide from this world. Tears once again came streaming out of her eyes.

KNOCK KNOCK

A knock on her hotel room door. She hesitated for a moment, sitting up to frustratedly wipe the tears out of her eyes.

"WHO'S THERE!" She yelled out.

"Come on Kyrsten, it's Jumal." A voice answered from the other side of the door.

Sighing, before once again wiping her eyes, she walked over to open the door. There stood her doubles partner Jumal Huyluer, who stood a few inches taller than her at 6 feet, with his bronze skin and warm brown eyes he gave her a half-hearted smile as she opened the door.

"Why are you here?" Kyrsten asked in a slightly annoyed manner.

"I am came here to see how you were," Jumal replied gesturing towards her seemingly exhausted state, "you were in a daze through our whole game, and then I saw your match, your Singles Match, that is. So can I come in?" He asked gesturing towards the room behind her.

Kyrsten nodded slightly and stepped back out of the doorway. "So how are you?" Jumal asked.

Kyrsten sighed, "Depends who your asking, Kyrsten Fletcher, the Hopalian tennis player, or me?"

"I want to know how you're doing. I think I've heard enough from the tennis player"

Kyrsten sight, "Very well, if you must know.... It's just... it's just... I can't take it anymore, all of the losses, all of the questions of over my retirement, my body's been failing, I, I can't take it anymore. It had to come out somehow and it all just out there and then. I, I'm 32-years-old, I've still got a lot of life ahead of me, and tennis is all I've known, and now I might be asked to retire, and I JUST CAN'T DEAL WITH THIS ANYMORE!" She let out an exacerbated sigh, "And I'm sorry for leaving you to dry during our doubles match out there-"

"It wasn't easy, you know."

"I know it wasn't easy for you, and I'm sorry. It's just all of this has been really getting to me lately... And I don't know what to do now that I've blown my only real chance."

"Kyrsten, you don't know that is your only chance. You still have at least two more tournaments ahead of you. Heck, this tournament isn't over for you yet, we're still in this, as a pair, but we're-- you're still in this, and if we both give this our all, we might just have a chance at, something. Even if you blew this chance, and maybe if you blow the next few, that doesn't mean you have to retire. Sure we're old, I mean look at us. But we can still be relevant, right, we can still have a piece of this pie that is international tennis. We just have to give to give it our all." Jumal giggles a little.

Kyrsten looks up from her pensive reflection, "Why are you laughing?"

"It's funny. How I'm here giving you advice after all we've been through. You know, you're usually the one who gives me advice during these tough times, not the other way around. Shouldn't I be the one crying over my possible retirement, and you being the one helping me through this? How the time have changed."

Kyrsten punched him in the arm, "Ohh.. shut up! This is really hard for me!"

"There's the Kyrsten Fletcher I know. Look I think you just need a break from all of this, it's all really getting to you. You know the best thing about going to international tournaments getting to travel and be a tourist in other countries for free. I hear the beaches here are really nice, and Hopal's great, we aren't exactly known for our beaches, and I'd love to finally get an opportunity to properly go surfing. What about it?"

"Sure I guess."

"Great!"

Yeah. It's been a while, hasn't it? It's been a while since an edition of DEUCE was freely available for you to enjoy. Nah, it's not like that. We've always been here - it's just for a while, you don't notice what we've been doing due to other things going on. But that's fine. The NSTT will keep on rolling regardless. And today was certainly an interesting day.

We're starting the Indoor Hard Court Season with the Kasandora Open in Lisander and the final day would see TJUN-ian involvement in both finals. But how did they go?

Up first was the doubles final where the Top seeds entering the tournament would be the Li Bo Twins, who managed to get to 1000 combined points and just about make this tournament. Their opponents here today would be Filipe Korf and Stella Bressen, the #3 seeds and local favourites from Lisander. All of the contests that Kim and Mei have played were decided in straight sets and this game would be no different - unfortunately for them, it would be for the opposing team this time. Still, this has been a great tournament for a team looking to fight their way back to previous highs and with Harold Crawley acting as a cheerleader for a lot of this season, this trio looks poised to take the next season by storm.

Meanwhile, the Singles Final featured two unranked players and in a tournament where all 4 of our players were unseeded, Hakim Kalah-Mustafa has actually had a bit of a great time here in Lisander. The Judge managed to win a doubles match with Jasmin Wayverson, a player he will admit to being a great friend of his across the season, before knocking off the 2nd seed in the Round of 16, the 5th seed in the Quarters and the 8th seed in the Semis to make it here. Now here he was, taking on a fellow seed-killer in Kevin Lindman of Hopal for his first ever NSTT title...and this game would certainly be a classic. The first set was all Lindman as Hopal wanted the glory too and while The Judge certainly tried to make things happen, Lindman would take it 6-4 in the end. The 2nd set was just tight as all hell, going to a tie-breaker that Hakim would win 10-8. The 3rd and final set, for all the marbles, would end up being an instant classic and things went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth for an hour on end. In the end, it was 9-8 and the Judge knew that he had to end it sooner rather than later...and so he did.

He collapsed onto the floor after the final point and you can't blame him at all. Hakim Kalah-Mustafa had claimed a T2 crown, only the 4th TJUN-ian Single title all time, and would now become the first athlete from the ArU Zone to make it into the Hall of Fame...and honour he celebrated with a prayer. Jasmin Wayverson, The Wayver of Dreams, would come down from the crowd to congratulate her friend on this title win and the celebrations would go long into the night.

TJUN-ian tennis isn't dead.
It's just hidden from view.

Ubung Day One - Sibylla.

I’m having the time of my life. Things have finally started going my way. After all those hours, days, weeks, months and years. I’m starting to see the results. After barely being able to keep my head above the first round waters and treading the low steps of the ranking ladder, I’m going places. It’s not the top 10, obviously, but it is the top 40’s. And that’s big, because last year that number was around 200. I reached a final. And not any final. A Major. On grass. That is the very definition of crazy.

I’m mostly glad for me. I’ve put in the hours, and this is my reward. But, seeing the pride in mom and dad’s eyes. That was something.

And the jealousy and resentment reeking from my siblings. That’s of course even better. Poor «talented» footballer Julian. Not only did his Lokomotiv Esaias tank yet another Allgnejsan season, now he’s being overshadowed by his little sister. I can see it kills him. And never has anyone deserved it more. Poor little Hannah, the family baby, the «spirited» activist, the constant source of paternal attention. How she struggles with losing that monopoly of concern. I heard she broke in and «rescued» a legion of rabbits and Guinea pigs from a local pet show over in Norrholmia while I was playing in Britonisea. Expecting mom and dad to rush to her side and bail her out, no doubt, scolding her gently but mostly showering her in kisses. Too bad it coincided with my appearance in the final and mom and dad traveling all the way to Doportedas. A few days in a cell crying likely served her well.

I do feel bad for Ingrid though. I know it’s hard for her. Failing over and over is hard enough by itself - I would know - but seeing your best friend excel while you just sink deeper and deeper must be even worse. And she’s had so many second chances. I try to cheer her up, push her. That’s how we used to get through disappointment and setbacks. It’s harder to be there for her now of course; I’m out here and she’s back in Esaias. We’ve always been there for one another, but lately I feel like she’s pulling away. I worry about her.

But I can’t deny it is mostly bliss these days. Cornelis. I don’t know what it is about that flat-faced boy, but I just can’t resist him. And after he got over that incident with the mustache, it turns out the feeling is mutual. I haven’t been in a relationship for so long, it’s almost like I’ve forgotten how. It’s fumbling and confusing, and long distance is hard. But it’s real. He’s been very supportive of me, and I try to do the same for him. He’s a very capable player, and I’m sure he’ll break through the ceiling eventually. He’s planning on coming down here. Pausing all of his own training and preparation to travel all the way to Ubung; I can’t even remember how flights and layovers we had to go through to get here. That’s love.

I’m going into action today. First round. Sissie Damsgard of Lisander. And Rock willing, then Romanescu. It’s not an easy route. But for the first time in years, I feel like I can do it. I feel like I can do anything.

As my passenger door tries to nudge me along, I rummage all the pockets dangling open on my decade-old backpack and double check the seat underneath it. Initially I find my ticket stub from last year’s Ubung Open, where my first attempt at a pro tennis masters tournament held on through the round of 32. Then I find my stub for this year’s Open, yet to be stamped, wondering if my second time around will be any better or worse. And finally I unearth what I'm really looking for: a movie script that is, itself, a ticket to the 2022 Ubung Film Festival - and a chance to showcase additional Dexter arts with our premiere of The Cat.

Amidst the sweltering heatwave of July 2021, I zip my backpack, sling it over my shoulders and lock my rental car before I walk up to a historic, Gothic manor in Blairsville, Burkitts, a small town in a Dexterra sibling state where I’ll work as the lead actor in an indie horror-comedy film. Past the old wooden staircase with its rusting rail and the porch with white paint peeling back into cobwebs of greying memories, I creak open the rickety door and let echoes clatter, breathing in the solemn remembrance of 19th-century (Gregorian) air. “Yo, I’m here,” I call out, dropping my bags down.

One of the two directors comes out from the kitchen through the dining room to my left. “Wassup! Welcome to the house!” says Barkley Clive, one of my classmates from a university course on screen acting, reaching for a fist bump. “How are you? Did you get something to eat yet?”

I meet the fist bump with a smile. “Yeah, I got something along the drive, so I’m good for a little while. What about you? This house looks super haunted, man. Where’s Jane?” - Carpentry, the other director and classmate of ours.

“She’s upstairs getting unpacked - you can go ahead and do the same. We’re just going to chill for today and maybe a little tomorrow, but tomorrow evening we’ll do some preliminary stuff. Oh, and the air conditioning’s out (of course), but I opened the windows and got an electrician coming.”

“Terrific…” I respond as I glance from chestnut floorboards to the high ceiling, searching for the real star. Barkley points him out to me - through the blue reading room to our right, at the top of a cat tree perched in a window overlooking the street. I tiptoe up to Mittens, a tuxedoed little tiger half-asleep on his carpet throne. I say hello and wave my hand near him so he can check me out, seeing if he’s interested in some pettin’. Mittens only stares back with deep, black holes for saucer eyes. “Got it,” I say, slowly dropping my hand as he yawns to unveil vampiric fangs before us puny human mortals, and stretches out murderous claws eager to slice jugulars - as if to say, That’s right, you see these? He then curls up into a fuzzy ball and drifts gently back to sleep. “Man’s perfect for the top role,” I tell Barkley.

The Cat is the story of a retiree whose beloved pet gets out of the house one day, but returns home with eerie, demonic differences that begin to terrorize him. It was an idea hatched by the two directors and I at the end of our semester, inspired by experiences we each had with our own pets. After writing the story, raising funds and somehow managing to land a deal with Dexter National Airwaves and Schrack Public Studios (of another Dexterra sibling state, this one actually governed by its film industry), we scored Jenna Lynn Carrish and Price Vincenzo - two career Dexter television actors - for supporting roles. Shortly after, our producers in Dexwaves and Schrack Studios helped us scout the filming locations, agreeing to host our main set in Blairsville, a blip on the Burkittian map of only 150 people nestled around a few roads surrounded by lush farmland and mountainside. Legend has it that demons or skinwalkers or something evil stalks the country, to the point that Blairsville has become a bit of a tourist attraction - though this has disrupted the lives of residents who largely don’t want the attention, so I must ask readers to respect their privacy. Near the town center, there’s a century-old Gothic manor that was originally a makeshift hospital when the town was being settled; the directors and I, who stayed there while filming, are (along with the entire cast and crew of The Cat) also beyond grateful specifically to Peter - the house’s current owner, who rents it out to quiet vacationers and probably seldom if ever to a film production.

To be honest, I’d say that the nation in which we were filming was just as fascinating as the town. Burkitts, the furthest east of any majority ethnic Dexter state, is a little island some hundreds of kilometers from Dexterra proper. It was settled almost two centuries ago by survivors of a civil war in a nation to which all Dexters belonged long before founding Dexterra - Burkittian coral-white beaches and near-constant sunshine was thought to provide perfect refuge for traumatized veterans and deserving war heroes. When our principal photography began in July 2021, Burkitts was in the process of gaining sovereignty - though voters simply lined up in a nice, orderly fashion at the local polling places, absent of any marching to confront regime forces. The ever pacifistic and compassionate Burkittians recently did the same thing again, in a vote to reunify with Dexterra and once again become an official constituency on 1 January 2023. Both of these developments were the talk of the town in Blairsville when they graciously welcomed their doors to us in the scorching summer of ’21.

That January 2021, my acting professor had us each begin our course with a monologue. After performing mine, our professor seemed intent on continuing it along - asking simply, “What do you think you really want?”

A pause hung in the air, somewhere between me and my character. “To tell a story.”

In Blairsville, there’s a bell at the top of a church that chimes once an hour, from eight in the morning until six in the evening, every day. They say that those who have been cursed by the local evil, no matter how far from the good people of the good town they go, will forever hear the bell chime.

Varalin, Darlcheri/Rentos head to Ubung with NSTT Finals on the line

Two seasons after this very tournament signalled Ceni's return to the international tennis scene, the Ubung Open will again assume its status as the cynosure of all eyes in the culmination of NSTT season 8.

In this penultimate tournament of the season, two Cenian entries will attempt to secure their places in the season's top 8 and, concomitantly, the NSTT Finals.

In the singles, Lonus Varalin is in a precarious position at number 8 in the year-to-date standings so far. Only 100 points clear of ninth-place entrant Joe Katsi, who won this year's Cenian Open, Varalin is fortunate that Katsi has not entered this year's event, with no comment given by the TJUN-ian tennis federation at the time of publication.

But he still faces a threat from a surging Ralph Newkarn and the ever-present threat of Ricardo Toli, who are 70 and 30 points behind Katsi, respectively. Newkarn did not survive his first round match against Hopal's Madeleine Jeffries, while Toli faces Melayuan hopeful Davi Malakkar in the second round.

It's not like Varalin has an easy draw, though; in the quarterfinals, he is slated to face second seed Ardil Navsal, who has already secured his spot in this year's NSTT Finals in second.

Joining Varalin and Navsal in the competition were rising star Xander Foyner-Evatee and old hand Johmer Vales, who both met untimely ends this tournament; Vales lost to the unheralded Waisnorian Anton Yarovikov in the first round, while Foyner-Evatee could not get bast the Acastanhan Lucas Parvash.

In the doubles, Coosal Darlcheri and Perger Rianor have still not yet secured their place in this year's NSTT Finals, although it is practically

Last year's finalists in both the NSTT Finals and the Ubung Open, the pairing is in seventh place with a 1230-point cushion separating them from perennial Grand Slam champions Rosa Levinsky and Sonya Gredello. Despite that cushion, at least four teams can mathematically surpass them in their spot: home hopes Komang Antari and Kadek Andreawati; Tena Spiricic and Alina Koreleva of Srednjaci; Ricardo Toli and Elizabeth Quehall of Britonisea; and Alexios Lakovakis and Mirella Xanthou of Brookstation.

However, early results at Ubung might confirm their place earlier than they think: Toli/Quehall will play against Antari/Andreawati in the second round, presuming results go according to seeding. If Toli and Quehall, the defending champions at this tournament, win, then Antari and Andreawati will have to have an unheralded ITT run with more than 1400 points; if the home hopes win, then Toli and Quehall cannot mathematically overtake Darlcheri and Rentos.

And neither Spiricic/Koreleva and Lakovakis/Xanthou did not enter in Ubung; if neither team enters the International Tennis Trophy, then that angst might all be for naught, regardless of the Cenians' own Ubung result.

So despite being just shy of mathematically qualifying for the NSTT Finals, Darlcheri and Rianor can take this tournament easily.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, ghost to ghost

Day one. Day done.

Before filming at the house in Blairsville, Burkitts, we began principal photography for The Cat at a car dealership in Dexterra. The directors had some friends who worked there and, with the approval of our producers, were kind enough to let us use the space for free. We had only a few hours in the morning before the dealership opened, so we did the best we could to shoot some scenes of my character, Simon, taking his cat to the veterinarian. This was amidst our efforts to get Mittens to stop batting the boom mic, even with a trained animal handler on set and plenty of treats for when he was civil.

“Action!” calls Barkley at one point.

Trying not to be starstruck face-to-face with Price Vincenzo decked out in a white lab coat and stethoscope, I’m relying on the Strasberg acting method to take me back to all the times I had brought in my beagles for a vet checkup. “There’s something really weird with my cat,” I begin. “I swear, he only wants to eat raw meat and drink only blood, and I’ve tried everything to get him interested in just plain normal food. Let alone his favorites. I don’t know what to -“

“Cut!” Barkley then interjects. “Dude, now where’s the cat?”

We all look and I swear Mittens had up and teleported. Somehow he had this uncanny ability to freely permeate the time-space continuum, coming and going through planes of existence as he pleased. We eventually find him curled up by the window, basking in direct sunlight like a heat junkie.

“Let’s go again from ‘I’ve tried,’” orders Jane after we fix our set.

I resume to the vet, “I’ve tried everything to get him interested in just plain normal food. Let alone his favorites. I don’t know what to do. Can you run any tests or give him medicine or something? There’s obviously something wrong with him, and I just want my cat back. What do you-“

“Cut,” Barkley stops again, sighing. “Cat.”

Things got even more supernatural at the house in Blairsville. I would often sense… a presence there, other than Barkley immersed in binders packed with meticulous production plans, Jane transcendentally burning sage through each room to cleanse them or even Mittens calculating the best shoe to poop in. I seemed to be the only one who picked up anything strange about the house, except for when Mittens stared intently at specific blank spots on specific walls. Perhaps it was all in my head: the owner had told us stories from when the house was a hospital, and of people supposedly dying in the rooms in which we were staying. He said he found evidence patients were buried on the property somewhere, but has yet to unearth anything. Barkley, who probably wouldn’t believe in ghosts if one shook his hand, found all the stories funny. I think Jane mainly took them as some type of sign from the universe, while I have had enough paranormal encounters to immediately accept the possibility of something - or someone - there with us. Other than Mittens, even.

Case in point. We had a few different sound recorders coming on and off set with boom mics and other equipment to get audio, dialogue and overdubs, though there were brief moments where one of the directors (or even I) needed to pick up sound. We were shooting a scene in the master bedroom upstairs, and in between takes I re-recorded some of my lines. I had a pair of headphones over my ears, the mic powerful enough to hear people’s thoughts. I’m pretty sure everyone in the house was there in the master bedroom with us - the owner was staying elsewhere, the two directors were in the room, as were the requested cast and crew.

But all of a sudden, I hear somebody walk up the stairs and round the corner - tiptoeing to our room.

Ubung Day Two - Georg.

I probably shouldn’t have had that last drink last night, but man, you need something good like that when you’re doing a chicken risotto. It’s like an integral part of the process, and the end result just doesn’t come out right without some of that extra panache to your stirring. Tired today though, I’ll admit to that.

But I’ve been tired for a long time. It’s been a year, man. Some days I can’t even recall where I am or what tournament we’re doing. The circuit, it drains you, and I’m about out of juice. Ubung’s great, I love the city. But just getting here is taxing as hell. It’s days like these where I seriously contemplate just dropping it all and walk down another path.

I just walk around with this constant bad feeling. It’s in the gut, it’s in the loins and joints. I don’t know if it’s stress, but it sure feels like what they’re describing. I just wanna cook, man. Not gonna lie, it hurt me when they canceled the show. But it was spring. Spring and clay season. So I just turned it around. But now? Dark autumn days, rain and wet grass. It bums me out. And I’ve never been a fan of the indoors. It’s the sun, man. The sun and the sweat and that clay dust. That’s tennis.

I just wanna cook awesome meals and mix killer drinks. I’ve had other offers. Yeah, big networks down south. My own show, complete creative control. Cooking in the sun. That’d be something. But I’ve declined them all. Yeah, never took the plunge. Maybe I should’ve. Sure feels like it on a day like today. I don’t know what’s holding me back. Fear of the unknown or some shit like that? Arne would have an answer. A convoluted and esoteric answer I wouldn’t understand. But I’m tired. I don’t even juggle anymore.

I’m tired. I haven’t even looked at the draw. It’s like I don’t care anymore, it’s all just mechanics. I don’t even get a kick out of teasing Dorotea anymore. I’ll have to shape up for the doubles though. No clue who we’re playing, but I need to get it together, for Arne’s sake.

Fear of the unknown. Maybe. Or maybe it’s love for spring. Maybe what’s keeping me here, making me drag my tired ass all over the dark side of the year, is that promise of spring. I don’t know. Im tired.
