Format
We have 32 teams! So we will have 8 groups of 4. Top four from each group will advance to the knockout stages. I will host the seeded draw, live on Discord. Every single game at this tournament will be hosted, ICly, within the Kingdom of Banija.

Remember: This is an association football(soccer for some of us) tournament, that'll be held in the immediate aftermath of the World Cup. The key? RPs will be limited to 50 words. With a bonus for having your RP be 50 words precisely. And a maximum one RP per matchday(neither of the preceding apply to rosters). Bonuses for other challenges will be set after each scorination, that will include things like a word or phrase of the day, or miscellaneous trivia, or a random theme. You can choose to ignore all that of course, and simply write your own RPs- that still have to stick to the above limits. So the Brevity Challenge Cup is a creative writing challenge, but designed to inspire and not to give you a ton of homework. ICly it might be a nice opportunity to give fringe NTers some playing time directly after the World Cup, or a chance to give your senior team another opportunity to earn a trophy.

And yes- I've gotten permission from the tournament founder to resurrect this tournament after a RL decade of it going into hiatus.

Organizational Notes

Grading Your RP
I will grade your RP, and give it a regular grade according to the scale. Then, after performing a word count, I will then 'pro-rate' your grade based on number of words in the RP...

Less than 50 words- 100% of grade
50 words exactly- 120% of grade
51-70 words- 90% of grade
71-90 words- 2/3s of grade
91-100 words- 50% of grade
101 words or more- 0% of grade

I will use the following website as my word counter, so everybody's clear what I'm judging by. They will be the final judge & jury on topics of word count(while I am the executioner).

Note on rosters: Word Count limits DO NOT APPLY to team rosters. And a roster post does not count towards your RP limit of one post per Matchday.

Ranks

To give some weight - but not too much - to the established order of things, teams will receive a ranking based on the most up-to-date KPB available (with the CoH still ongoing by the start of the tournament, I will use the post WC92 Qualifying ranks) - simplified by dividing up the KPB into brackets of ten and giving a rank dependent on which bracket a team currently resides in. However, anyone who takes part using, say, a bunch of fans who won a pie-eating competition on TV, or bus drivers on holiday, or veterans over the age of fifty, can self-elect to rank themselves in a lower bracket. Please do this as a part of your roster. Because it's not about the winning, it's about the taking part, right????

Keeping on theme, we're gonna keep this short... and compact. The entire tournament will be played in and around the capitol- with big cities Busembe and Hoima, both within two hours of the capitol, joining Brevity Cup hub city Busukuma for these games.

Although there is no word limit for roster posts, in the spirit of the Brevity Cup, this roster will be as brief as possible.

This tournament will not count towards the Kick Corps record, this is considered an exhibition tournament.

As such, DISC will not send the Elite Eleven, instead opting for talent currently playing in real leagues.

The Tinhamptonian roster is completely identical to that of the 73rd Cup of Harmony, including RP permissions. (All players will be available for the first game.)

This Tinhampton plays in an alternative universe which diverged from this one when the CoH73 winners chose to leave their hotel at 3pm, rather than 11am, on the day after the final.

None of the Tinhamptonians are good at music, although the ever-noxious Julia Atherton has taken up the electric guitar in the six weeks between the CoH final and the first BCC tie. At least she didn't get a drum kit...

New Gesem Brotherhood Soccer Team

GLS missed 2015 season and is changing for 2016. To maintain interest, they created a national team with players still under contract. The teams reflected are last season's teams and not which teams the players will play for in 2016. Brevity Cup canonically happens winter 2015-16, before 2016 GLS season.

Julia MacEacharna not only has a traditionally Bigtopian name (traditional for our part of the diaspora, anyway), she follows in a strong Zwangzugian tradition of defensive midfielders, and she can play the tenor saxophone. Swoon. Hopefully the players are patriotic enough to sing the anthem, but if all else fails, we can appeal to a very, very old national team tradition and have her whip it out for the pregame festivities.

The Lozhoan National Football Team!

A History of Lozhoan Football

Association football is one of the most popular sports in Lozho. During a daily five minute factory break one day, Lozhoan workers decided to kick a leftover bottle of Sozha Soda around in an improvisation of football. The bosses of Ghezhan Pens and Paper Inc. were so impressed that they decided to establish the first football club in Lozho, Ghezhan Pens and Paper FC, later shortened to Ghezhan City. The Lozho Championship (since renamed) Lozho First Division was later established, all between teams that had been established by factory bosses. Lozhoan football is a very lucrative venture, but most players play out of love, and thus are more than willing to sign four year contracts for a few Lozhons a month.

Recently, the Lozho Football Association decided to formally select a team to represent the nation on the world stage, inspired by the previously isolationist and sports-unfriendly nation of West Barack and East Obama's foray into international cricket. Lozho's dark blue and red uniforms will shine as they take the field in their first Brevity Challenge Cup.

The Coaching Team

Gezald Ponzo is the 61 year old former head coach of Langhan Town, with whom he won the Lozho Championship with 12 years ago in one of the biggest upsets in Lozhoan history. He has since been inbetween coaching and pundit roles, as well as filming a few commercials for Langhan & Zangzan Accountants. He brings a wealth of experience to the job, and his special expertise in team unity and morale boosting makes him perfect for the role.

He will be assisted by two assistant coaches - Thomas Bluefield and Francis Clarke. The two have been loyal assistants to Ponzo his entire career, and will be happy to assist in this new journey. Joining in a guest capacity tole is Dr Manafort Obama MD, the sports doctor for the West Barack and East Obama Cricket Team.

Starting XI

Goalkeeper: Bonzo De Jong, 31

The current goalkeeper for Gosport Pelicans, De Jong has had a long and esteemed career. Starting his career as a Pelican mascot holding up a sign to fast food restaurants, De Jong quickly rose up the ranks with his signature jumping technique. Despite being only one metre tall, De Jong can jump to anywhere in the goal and make a save, earning the nickname 'Bonzo the Guy Who Can Jump Really Far and High Which Saves Shots on Target'.

Left Full Back: Fazj Srejzjajk, 23

This fast-paced left wingback has been making waves ever since her debut for Langhan Town two years ago. Having recently been signed by Lozhoan titans Protchen United for a lucrative deal, Srejzjajk is looking to make her impact on the international stage as well. Her speed makes her a dangerous wingback who can strike opponents on the counter.

Left Centre Back: Penny Butterfield, 26

Despite plying her treade in obscurity (the second tier) for most of her career, Penny Butterfield got her big break when she was signed in a surprise deal by Protchen United. While this was considered by commentators as a "sorted by height on Lozho Manager 2022" type of signing, the two metre tall centre back puts the "no nonsense" in "no nonsense centre back". If you've conceded a corner and she's on the pitch, you've probably conceded a goal.

Right Centre Back: Drew Zaratrianias, 32

Often called "The Old Gentleman", "Zaratrianasaurus", or even "South Ghezhan Nursing Home FC Hall of Fame Inductee", this old dog Zaratrianias knows all the new tricks. Motivated by the chants that "chasing this fast will impede your arthritis", Zaratrianias intimidates any forwards that try to get past him by simply being faster. Genius!

Right Full Back: Cartzon Zohzo, 21

Another young wingback, Zohzo and Srejzjajk make up what's called 'Lozho's Finest Pair of Wings: Sponsored by Lozho's Finest Pair of Wings Fast Food Inc.'. While he is one of the younger members on the team, Zohzo is proving his worth with his outings at the Gosport Pelicans, having broken into the team as a teenager. He has the potential to be amongst the all time greats.

Left Central Midfielder: Henry Blyth, 29

The captain of the team, Blyth has both experience and a passion to improve. A one club man for Shezhen Athletic, Blyth has developed a reputation for his strong leadership and passing skills. He's also an avid online gamer, and regularly plays Valorant with his teammate Obamovich, developing his skills as a captain by strengthening his vocal cords when he has to insult "useless teammates".

Right Central Midfielder: Pazron Droozle, 27

Nicknamed "The Droozler", Droozle is known for his "droozling" skills, or in layman's terms "dribbling". Droozle can droozle a ball all around the pitch in an exhilarating display of end-to-end football. Rumour has it there's no defender he hasn't droozled past.

Left Winger: Fatrouza Smith, 22

Fatrouza Smith may come from a wealthy family of the Smith Textbooks and Notebooks and Notepads Company wealth, but he's a golden boy on and off the pitch. Speedy, crossy, and shooty, this winger can get a ball in the box any time of the day, no questions asked.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Pazrick Zouzal, 27

Zouzal is the playmaker that makes the Gosport Pelicans attacking force tick. Always able to create chances even when there doesn't look possible, Zouzal conjures a ball out of thin air. Oh, and he used to work part time as a magician. Might be related.

Right Winger: Zed Zoan, 31

A pacey right winger, Zed Zoan runs up and down the fla ks of the pitch in record time. Whilst his crossing may have room for improvement, he makes it up with his ability to cut deep into the opposition boxes to attempt long shots.

Striker: Paxton Obamovich, 29

A refugee from West Barack and East Obama fleeing persecution for his love of football, Paxton Obamovich has taken up citizenship in Lozho and has already been banging in the goals. A target man that always makes the ball connect with his head, he just needs to jump a little bit and boom! You've conceded again. Yes, there are a lot of people who can head well on our team.

Mertagne's Brevity Challenge Cup invitiation was intercepted by arcane forces, and instead picked up by second tier Mertagnian domestic club The Inner Circle of Ist.

The Inner Circle of Ist is a football club based in the town of Ist, which can be found in the far west of Mertagne, in the foothills of some of the tallest mountains and densest forests in Calania. It is not a place that is often disturbed, the mountain shadow means it gets dark at around 15:00, even in the summer, and its inhabitants, almost refusing to interact with the outside world, are... odd, to say the least.

The Inner Circle does not participate in the domestic transfer market in the usual way. Players are selected from academies seemingly through nepotism rather than natural talent, and yet the team manages to continue to put in a decent performance in the second tier of Mertagnian football.

Rumour has it that Ist is a town under some kind of curse, or run by one or many type(s) of an arcane or unholy cult. All of those rumours are completely unfounded, of course - now don your black and yellow robes, it's time to support the Circle! Every player enclosed has a special team nickname, which they staunchly use in press interviews and to each other on and off the pitch. Whether it's an elaborate bit, a harmless piece of fun, or something more sinister, is yours to decide.

While this new "Expo Corps" is untested, they still are theoretically the best in the group, expecting to make a playoff run.
