Fantasy Meets Reality: WC47 bid, Valanora and Kura-Pelland

Postby Kura-Pelland » Sat May 30, 2009 5:09 pm

Image

Kura-Pelland and Valanora, two of the most experienced hosting nations in international sports, have announced plans to co-host the 47th NationStates World Cup in association football.

It would represent the third time Kura-Pelland has hosted the most popular sporting event in the multiverse - following WC38 and WC44 in addition to which Kaze Progressa, who were 'run' by the same OOC user, hosted three Cups themselves (WC12, WC17, WC25) and introduced key innovations still used to this day (the KPB ranking system, the Baptism of Fire competition and style modifiers). Both 'KP' nations have hosted other events too. The user behind Valanora, meanwhile, hosted three World Cups under various guises (WC39, WC43, WC45) as well as other significant events including Baptism of Fire 23 and the ninth Di Bradini Cup. Without question, experience is a strength and not weakness of this bid, and these are two reliable hosts.

Therefore the decision is in the detail, both in OOC mechanics and IC fun. That's where the rest of this bid thread comes in.

Fundamental to the IC emphasis is the slogan 'Fantasy Meets Reality', reflecting the two very different IC nature of each co-host; Kura-Pelland is an earthly-bound near-future-tech nation with a mildly interesting history of civil war, while in Valanora, not only is technology further towards the futuristic, but magic and psionic beings are entirely normal. The other WC nations have even more wild variations, and we encourage all of you to make the most of these differences for RP purposes. We certainly will.

On the OOC detail, here's the mechanics:

RP bonus is added as a direct addition to KPB score and is calculated across multiple matchdays, to ensure those who cannot always RP on a consistent basis to still gain bonus across the tournament.
Scorination will use the highly proven NSFS software and generally occur late evenings UTC (late afternoons/early evenings for those in the Americas).
Qualification, given the huge number of signups, will probably take the form of ten groups of ten teams, the top three in each progressing to the finals. Already, only one more entrant is needed for this format.
Additional details will be made available on request.

What part of the code creates the "Qazox loses in the opening round" in the scorinator formula and how much does Qazox have to pay to have that partof the code removed for World Cup 47?

Do you have some specific host RPs in mind to trigger some RPer reactions, or is it a case of 'You're in Valanora, yey magic!' and 'You're in K-P, yey normality!' ?

It's simple, really, it's the line that reads: If TeamA=Qazox Then TeamB(Goals) = TeamA(Goals)+1 ;)

There is no code that dictates Qazox's fate, although I love Star's jocular suggestion.

We'll probably plan some RPs during the qualifying stages although the mere hook of 'Valanora = magic, K-P = normal' is a start.

Same question I asked the other bid.. Will RP bonus be reset after qualification? I can't help but feel that may have been a large reason for my thrashing at the finals this WC!

We have not yet decided on whether there will be a reset or not. If we end up using the post-qualifying ranks for seeding in the Proper, then yes they shall be reset, otherwise it would be a double reward using your new rank and then RP bonus.

Nonsense. The variable being assigned is always on the left.

Not that I actually coded that in there. Because I didn't.

Clearly whoever plays against Qazox must adopt a strictly Karelan policy. That will cause Qazox' team to self-score.

Neither of your nations would tax visiting players, team staff, and supporters, at anywhere NEAR rates that Cafundeu would... Right?

While Kura-Pelland do tend towards indirect over direct taxation, costs of living are significantly lower and more transparent than in Cafundéu and the nation is well used to providing hospitality for big sporting occasions.

I can't see Valanora being any worse than Kura-Pelland, let alone Caf.

Valanora does not tax its' tourists/guests apart from the standard 6.25% sales tax from the products they purchase whilst in the country. This is to compensate since the citizens are already put through their taxes before receiving their earnings.

Will the WC hosts help some patrons recognize the difference between fantasy and reality if the mental cognition makes it difficult to do such, or will they prop such a patron into a glass cage, poking sticks at it and feeding it trout?

If RP bonus IS to be reset after qualification, it will only be because post-qualifying ranks (accounting for the improved results RPing should have earned you in qualifying) will have been implemented. So your earlier RPing efforts will count one way or the other, it just might be indirectly.
