I guess this means that - unless anyone objects - Chinese California will take kinda the role of the US in the Cold War by forming NATO (though I assume it will have a different name in this TL) and leading the anti-communist front with various interventions?

Currently, my plan for France is that it resulted from the revolt of French partisans under Nazi occupation overthrowing the regime independently of what in OTL was D-Day, similar to the Yugoslav partisans. France will, in many ways, be Stalinist. Its current borders are the result of the revolt pushing Germans out and deporting them, as happened with Prussian Germans in our timeline. However, it's important to note that these resemblances will largely be superficial because France and the Soviet Union are very different places, and so it's perhaps most accurate to say that this France will be thoroughly Jacobin in its approach to Marxism. Leninist compromises would not be seen, ultimately, as acceptable, and French foreign policy would be rather trigger-happy with calling others revisionists or "uncommunist" during the Cold War.

Gum Shan would provide arms and funding to anti-communist states and insurgents across the globe to engage in proxy wars and intervene directly in a number of conflicts to stop the expansion of communism. Repressive measures against real or supposed communist sympathizers were taken domestically as well, while the intelligence and security apparatuses were expanded.

Since I doubt anyone will be apping as an independent Hawaii and since Gum Shan has an expanded role than the one I initially envisioned in this TLs Cold War, I will be adding Hawaii in my claims as it makes geostrategic and political sense to have been annexed and be used as a launching pad for Asian interventions during our version of the Cold War.

Now, the next thing we need to figure out is our version of WWII. I assume Nazi Germany was the main bad?

- The Liberal Wave - With a completely ban on freedom of speech and freedom of press, which was seen to prevent waves of differing ideologies from spreading, a growing number of those against the regime have become supporters of new movement, which promises to "liberate Cameroon".

- Slumped economy - Although the complete control over workers was seen to increase efficiency and establish Cameroon as a leading country in Africa, in recent years, efficiency has slumped, with a lack of trading partners due to it's isolationist foreign policy, has left the economy in a gradual decline from it's golden age during the 70's and 80's.

- Increasing tensions with the West - Tensions among the west since the establishment of the State of Cameroon in 1927 have been mixed. During WW2, tensions rose massively due to Cameroon's continued support for Fascism, and had continued for that until the mid-50's. During the 1970 Cameroonian Genocide, which saw the death of over 450,000 men, women and children, with the targets being tribal minorities and to the killings of up to 75,000 "Ethnic Gabonese People". Now, after the countries announcement of a "Purification program" - tensions seem to be returning to that of the 1970's.

History:

Cameroonian Civil War [1919 - 1921] - After the Great War, which saw a German defeat [?], Cameroon, unlike this timeline, went into almost immediate anarchy, as opposition groups against European control. This led to what is known as the Cameroonian Independence War, which was a 3-way civil war between coalition forces of Europe, still recovering from the Great War, a far-left organisation similar to that of the USSR and a united coalition against both forces, who advocated for a multi-party democracy. During this, an estimated 400,000 were killed. On July 9th, 1921, the leader of the Cameroonian Communist Union, Domevlo Iniko, declared an independent state and called on the "People of Africa to unite!". Although his call for mass revolt failed, a united front against the European states did manage to find victory. On September 19th, 1921, Iniko declares victory in the civil war.

Republic of Cameroon [1922 - 1927] - During the opening few months of Cameroon's new found independence, it saw factions of differing ideologies battle it out, with some suggesting that while Cameroon became recognised as an independent state on September 19th, fighting continued, mostly between the far-right faction and communist factions. Fighting ended on January 8th, 1922. The republic was officially declared the following day, of which saw Cameroonians vote in a free and fair election. The election saw a victory for a moderate coalition made up of centre-left and centre-right parties, with the extremist parties of far-right Black Nationalists and the far-left communists. During the early years, Cameroon's economy was set up to be a mixture of private and public ownership, hoping to invite overseas investment. Cameroon saw rapid growth after these reforms, and seemed to have taken Cameroon quickly to become a modern African nation.

Behind the scenes, the ignored extreme parties established what they called a "United Ideology". The two biggest parties, that being the far-right Black Nationalists, mirroring that of an African version of fascism and the far-left communists, who mirrored that of the USSR, established National Syndicalism. It combined a command economy as-well as a highly patriotic and nationalistic government. However, it was a political battle between Iniko and Fodjour Basel. Coming towards the 1926 election, Iniko was assassinated, although the reason is unknown. Some suggest it was a lone attack, others have suggested it was a member of the Black Nationalist Front. This led to the BNF to gaining the foot-hold as an alternative to the Democratic Coalition. The 1926 election saw victory for the Democratic Coalition, however, only lasting 1 year.

On February 12th, 1927, President Diji, having been re-elected as leader of Cameroon, was shot and killed at his inauguration. The death had been concluded to be from a member of the BNF. However, it saw a direct attempt by disloyal military generals to take control, which resulted in an 3-month stalemate. During those 3 months, both the BNF and the Military declared themselves as the leading power. The stalemate allowed the BNF enough time to quickly take control of capital. The military, despite popular support, was unable to takeover the capital due to the militarisation of the capitals industry, and saw the Junta naturally collapse upon defeat. On July 23rd, 1927, Leader of the BNF, Fodjour Basel, declares the State of Cameroon and declares victory.

- Pre-Basel era (Civil War and Republic)

Basel's Reign (1927 - 1988)
Key Moments:

September, 1927 - Basel begins 2-year plan to "Eliminate the nationalist. Eliminate the Devils". The program looks to begin a mass crackdown on political opponents, as-well as a purging of military generals, advisor and political advisers.

April, 1929 - Government announce new constitution, called the "Peoples Charter of Cameroon". Declares a one-party state as-well as complete control of the economy.

January, 1933 - The first of three 5-year plans. The first is to accelerate yields and to establish Cameroon as a fully agrarian society. Leads to several famines due to food route mismanagement.

December, 1935 - Basel begins the purge of key political opponents, including cabinet ministers.

April, 1935 - Cameroon declares a "Liberation War" on the French Gabon. During the same month, Basel establishes "War Nationalism" - enacts total war.

April, 1935 - January, 1938 - Cameroonian Liberation War ends in a stalemate. During the early years, Cameroon manages a strong offensive, mostly due it's quick shift in the economy as-well as much larger amount of troops. A lack of supply and demotivation saw the Cameroonian army struggle to make any gains. During a French offensive during the summer of 1937, Cameroon was pushed back to the border, in which sighted Basel to establish a mass drafting. Cameroon attempted a last-ditch attempt at making any sort of gains, which saw very little progress. A peace treaty was signed, ending the war on a white peace.

March, 1938 - A mass protest against the government sees over 250 killed by police, and sees a national martial law announced.

February, 1939 - Cameroonian Government announces it's intention to side with !Fascist/Loser at the end of the war. Announces the "Great Liberation War" and Cameroon's intention to expand southwards.

Great Liberation War [1939 - 1945] - The Great Liberation is often considered just another theatre in WW2, but to Cameroon, was considered a major conflict. After the announcement of the Great Liberation War, Cameroon troops began a swift invasion of French Gabon, and managed to dig in by early 1940. They prevented their mistakes of the First Gabonese-Cameroon war, and managed to prevent a counter-attack. As France? fell to the Germans?, Cameroon managed to gain the upper-hand, and officially sided by the Germans. Basel officially announces the conquest of Gabon on the 2nd July, 1940 and was formally annexed into Cameroon the following day.

The latter stages of the war was considered internationally as a stroke of military genius. Announcing total mobilising of the Cameroon Military, it saw 1.5 Million deployed in what is called the Great Defensive. A combined effort from colonial powers to rid Cameroon of their government was ultimately unsuccessful. Combining an ideologically-driven military and guerrilla warfare, Cameroon managed to prevent the collapse of the regime, and proved for the next 4 years to be a viable nation. However, during what as known as Operation Bird, several massacres occurred against the recently annexed country of Gabon, with the most known being the East Gabonese Massacre, which saw 12,000 killed in a 2-month operation, the killings mostly due to a refusal of forced Labour. On the 15th January, 1944, Basel successfully negotiated a deal with the !Allied powers, which would see Basel end the war with a white peace, yet remain owner of Gabon. The Treaty of Yaoundé was signed on the 18th January, 1944, and saw Cameroon exit the second world.

April 1944 - Basel announces the Great Recovery Plan - large-scale industrialisation of the country and economically recover from WW2.

December, 1946 - 1st Gabonese Uprising, crushed via military intervention.

September, 1950 - Basel announces second 5-year plan - intertwines with the Great Recovery and looks for a change from an agrarian economy to industrialised economy.

March, 1952 - Basel establishes a Ministry of Truth, major crackdowns on anti-government groups.

December, 1952 - Widespread famines across Cameroon due to a combination of the 5-year plan and food mismanagement, second 5-year plan scrapped.

April, 1956 - An attempted coup by disloyal military officers is crushed.

April, 1956 - Widespread military purges occur due to coup. Several important military officers are executed on the basis of treason.

October, 1959 - 2nd 5-year plan resumes after stable economic growth.

June, 1960 - Basel announces the Opening of Cameroon, looks to establish greater economic ties with the West, as-well as the groundwork for privatisation.

May, 1961 - Cameroon announce the annexation of Equatorial New Guinea, establishes the Treaty of Guinea with Spain.

August, 1963 - Basel announces the establishment of local worker's communes, the "Federation of Cameroon" is announced as a political program.

November, 1963 - Cameroon adopts the Gold Dinar, abounds the Dollar.

January, 1968 - Cameroon announce the end of the 2nd 5-year plan, establishes a new economic plan, known as the New Economic Reform (NER).

March, 1970 - October, 1970 - 1970 Cameroonian Genocide - Basel declares an official campaign on Cameroonian Purification, and begins what was infamously known as the 1970 Cameroonian Genocide. Those killed during the biological campaign range from 400,000 - 550,000. During this, Cameroon went under massive sanctions from the west, which collapsed all the work of the Opening of Cameroon. Basel, despite the sanctions and entering the country into an economic depression, kept the plan in action, and announced the completion on the 16th December, 1970. By then, numbers of those killed reached around 535,000.

June, 1973 - Basel accessed the West of "economic treason".

August, 1975 - An attempted uprising in Western Cameroon spurs widespread crackdowns and sees the deaths of over 5000 people. Known as the 1975 Purge.

February, 1979 - Basel demands the cutting down of Western sanctions, and prepares the groundwork for a United African Alliance under a single market and single currency.

December, 1981 - Inflation hits 452% in highest inflation ever recorded, mostly due to economic mismanagement. Unemployment reaches 38%, and Cameroon enters an economic depression.

January, 1982 - Basel is put under widespread pressure from his government to do something. Basel pledges to save the countries economy in mass investment project.

January, 1982 - Government announce new Economic Recovery Project, which sees a 6-year plan to recover the country from economic turmoil.

October, 1982 - International sanctions are lifted from Cameroon.

July, 1987 - Cameroon successful recovers from the Cameroonian Depression, Basel hailed as a god in Cameroon.

April, 1988 - Basel dies at age of 90, and is hung from a cross in the capital, as-well as the widespread construction of statues. Hailed a great leader, he oversaw a civil war, world war, and 2 other wars, and managed to recover the country. His son, Mumbo Al-sahd, takes charge.

June, 1988 - Mumbo declares a "New Cameroon" and pleads to establish a "Cameroon for the people".

November, 1988 - The Economic Moderation Program looks to moderate economic restrictions and legalisation of local private companies.

March, 1990 - Mumbo's government look to open up to the west once more, engaging in several diplomatic missions to the Western nations.

October, 1992 - Mumbo's establishes further reforms to Cameroon's social polices, engaging in a much more moderate policy, most notably legalising being a homosexual.

January, 1996 - Fairly popular among most in Cameroon, Mumbo establishes a 5-year term, although it unlimited term limits. He declares Cameroon a "Socialist Republic".

November, 1999 - Mumbo becomes one of the founding members of the African Union, establishing a economic unionist program between many African nations. Mumbo looks to begin to the establish the groundwork for a single currency and a more economically and politically integrated union.

July, 2003 - Mumbo wins in a tight victory in the Congressional election, says to "embrace democracy", as-well as announcing new industrialisation plans to "bring Cameroon into the 21st Century".

March, 2008 - The 2008 Global financial crises hits Cameroon very hard, leading to a hike in inflation, unemployment and a major effect on GDP. Mumbo looks to prevent a collapse economically.

November, 2009 - Sighting the reason for the crises due to Mumbo's economic mismanagement, a group of military officers attempt to coup the government and establish a military junta. Unsuccessful, Mumbo announces his one and only widespread purge of military officers, sighting a new beginning for Cameroon's military.

December, 2013 - Mumbo declares an end to the 2008 financial crises, as-well as the introduction of a new currency, the Cameroonian Dollar.

October, 2014 - Mumbo's government begins exploration of petroleum, set to bring "mass fortunate to Cameroon".

March, 2016 - Cameroon reports record literacy rates, as-well as mass education reform. Mumbo declares victory over capitalism in historic AU speech.

August, 2019 - Sighting an end to his reign, as-well as in declining health, Mumbo resigns and gives his leadership to his deputy President, young and cunning diplomat Barack Ojukwu.

November, 2020 - His government rapidly changes Cameroon's social and economic policies, establishing almost complete control over Cameroon's economy. Despite this damaging Cameroon's economic growth, Barack declares that Cameroon needs "control, not growth".

June, 2021 - A large-scale revolt led by Gabonese Revolutionaries becomes unsuccessful, and Barack declares Gabon a "rouge state" and declares to Liberate the lands of Gabon.

September, 2021 - Gabon is officially liberated via large military intervention.
