Lord of the Rings: The 4th Age

Postby Dentali » Mon Sep 26, 2022 5:32 am

Lord of the Rings: The 4th Age OOC

Welcome to Lord of the Rings: The 4th Age. This will be an RP set in the fourth age of middle earth and will develop at a rate of 1 IRL week to 1 in RP month. Players will create important people in Middle Earth, rulers and influentials

IC: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=524713

Image

Set in the year FA: 220 after the peaceful death of Eladarion, King of the Reunited Kingdom and the son of Elessar and Arwen. He has twin children who rule the Kingdoms or Arnor and Gondor respectively (Not named in case someone applies for them). The Dark Lord Sauron is defeated but can evil ever truly die? New Shadows are seen rising across Middle Earth and in the hearts of Men, will you join this new shadow or stand against it?

Setting an RP in the 4th age of Middle Earth provides us with a land full of rich lore, peoples, and history, but gives us a great deal of flexibility. With that said we do know a number of things which are firmly set. For instance the fact that most of the Elves leave for Valinor and the rest begin to diminish, that the Rings lose their power as well as most of the world’s magic. I am prepared however to play a bit loose with canon in the name of player fun. For example if you want to play the king of a group of Elves who choose to stay in Middle Earth then go for it, but be advised your population will not be very large, and those elves who have been born more recently have diminished in terms of ability and lifespan. Want to have one of the lost Rings of Power? Okay, but it is only a fraction of its former strength. Want to play a Wizard? Sure but you're not as powerful as Grandal or Saruman. Any questions ask away!

When applying for this RP, I would like everyone to apply as a ruler of an area to begin with like the lord of a region of Gondor, the King of Dale, an orc warchief etc. These characters are going to be able to set in motion events in a far more organic fashion than some random ranger might (no matter how cool the character may be). I would prefer events to be driven by players and develop organically, however I will give a nudge should it be necessary.

Given the MANY properties associated with LOTR, assume that Tolkein work comes first but any games or other properties which exist in the world of LOTR can be used as source material provided they do not contradict Tolkein's work.

Ranks & Tiers

So borrowing from Crusader Kings here.... Essentially A character's realm is divided into a roughly feudal structure with Kings, Dukes, Counts etc., You may call them different things but their are ranks which correspond to different realm sizes and areas.

Tier: Empire, Rank: Emperor
Tier: Kingdom, Rank: King
Tier: Duchy, Rank: Duke
Tier: County, Rank: Count
Tier: Barony, Rank: Baron

For Example: The Kingdom of Arnor is ruled by a High-King which are an Empire Tier and Emperor Rank respectively. Its made up of 3 Kingdoms each ruled by a King, one directly by the High-King. Each Kingdom has a number of Duchies, each ruled by a Duke and one directly by the King of that Kingdom and so forth. So the High-King of Arnor is also the King of Arthedain, the Duke of Fornost , and the Lord of Fornost Erain.

CHARACTER LIST

Name: Körthar Ostîc Amrost
Race: Mixed blood of Black Númenórean, Variag, Haradrim, and Urêthâni.
Rank: Great Warlord (Duke)
Realm: The Realm of the Sun
Objectives: The growing of his host, subjugation of the Orcs of the Ered Lithui, incursion into Eastern Mordor

Name: Úrgost
Race: Fire-Dragon
Rank: King
Realm: Ruler of Angmar
Objectives: Dominion over the Northern Reaches of Middle Earth, Accumulation of Treasure
Brief Bio: Following the defeat of Agandaûr in the North of Eriador, the great Fire-Drake Úrgost took over the dark fortress of Carn Dûm. Since the end of the First Age he has shown no allegiance to Sauron or any other dark power. In the centuries since the fall of Sauron, Urgost has claimed the lands of Angmar as his own but has shown no interest in straying outside their borders. He collect tribute and fealty from the many orcs, men and creatures living in this realm but for the most part leaves them to their own devices.

Name: Ar-Adûnakhôr, the Iron-Handed
Race: Numenorean (by his own proclamation); Black Numenorean, intermarried
Rank: Maker-King of the Urêadûnaim
Realm: The Urêthâni [that is, the Easterlings. In their own tongue it is the Realm of the Sun]
Objectives: Ar-Adûnakhôr, like his father before him, is lord of Rhun and the East-Lands. He seeks the advantage and prosperity of his people, and freedom from the tributes and restrictions replaced upon them by the men of the West.

Name: Âdul
Race: Orc(goblin)
Rank: Count(Would this be correct for Orc warchief because I'd imagine the Orc lands are largely divided into various clans and warbands which while they can intimidate and perhaps even demand tribute have no other control over other clans)
Realm: ÂdulBajark
Objectives: Force all the Orc Chiefs under his total Dominion, resist and eventually march against Gondor in Mordor
Brief Bio: Whilst of lesser stature than his brethren Âdul has greater intelect and cunning than his fellow orcs and even some men such a talent is perhaps attributed to his time as a personal servant of the Mouth of Sauron. Upon the fall of Sauron Âdul fled to the Eastern Marches with his soldiers and established his own petty kingdom which has grown thanks to his better Diplomacy and cunning along with better training and formation of his armies compared to other Orc Chieftains.

Name: Duinhir "the Quiet"
Race: Man
Rank: Prince (Duke)
Realm: Lebennin (Gondor)
Objectives: Maintain peace between the Realms of Men, maintain his family's position at court, ensure the security of Lebennin and Pelargir.
Brief Bio: The oldest son of Prince Sirhon, the second Prince of Lebennin, Duinhir was raised with a nose in his books. He had an eye for numbers, a talent his father had cultivated. A shy boy with an aversion to fighting, the princeling observed much when he kept to himself and others paid no mind to him. As he grew, he developed a mind for politics and stewardship, though he never outgrew his shyness, a fact that earned him the moniker "the Quiet," a name that has stuck even as he took his father's place.

Name: Naezera; in Elvish she is known as Nathrano Gwathren, or the Weaver of Shadow
Race: Spider
Rank: Duchess
Realm: Ephel Dúath/The Mountains of Shadow
Objectives: Like all Spiders, Naezera is driven by an all consuming hunger. Knowing the weakness of Men and Orc who she and her brood have consumed, she plans to begin expanding her web all over Middle Earth, consuming as much as her and her kind can.
Brief Bio: One of the last children of Shelob, she barely escaped her maw. Originally nesting in Mirkwood, she would truly come to her own when she heard Hobbits had weakened her vicious mother. Seeing an opportunity, Naezera went to Ephel Dúath, and after many months, finally found her and killed her, consuming her body for herself. With her consumption satisfied for the time, and hearing the fall of Sauron, Naezera moved into her mothers old home, Torech Ungol. There, she began creating her brood. Unlike most Spiders, Naezera is interesting in that she has chosen not to consume most of her brood, as she barely survived her own mother's consumption. Because of this, Naezera's brood was able to conquer all of Ephel Dúath, making anyone remaining in Melkor terrified of the Mountains of Shadow.

With her massive brood, Naezera's hunger was satisfied by sending them on expeditions, particularly to Osgiliath and Orodruin. These cities would kill many spiders, but lose many of their own to Spiders who's only goal was to bring the prisoners back to consume safely. Though this worked for a while, Naezera's hunger, and that of her brood, has started to grow with the new Darkness. Soon her hunger will grow too great to be contained with the prisoners they have. Rather then resort to eating her brood, she will soon begin a push to start moving into new territories; expending her Web's reach, and devouring as many as she can...

Name: Vâtraphazân III
Race: Man [Bellakaze]
Rank: King
Realm: Bellakar
Objectives: Preserve the southernmost realm of the faithful; defeat the King's Men wherever they may dwell; re-unite all the Realms in Exile south of Gondor.
Brief Bio: The great grandson of Nîlûhîn II, Vâtraphazân has ruled Bellakar for three decades. His reign has been once of peace, a long peace, but also a watchful one. He has strengthened Bellakar's grip over the land of Mardruak, watching with concern the rising power of Umbar and its new rebellion against Gondor. Even more concerning is the news of the death of Eldarion, and the sundering of the Reunited Kingdom.

Now age has caught up with him at the age of eighty-two. The few drops of Numenorean blood, a remnant of his prestigious house, have granted him a healthier and longer life, but he feels the urge to accept the Gift of Man grow ever daily. He is content to accept it, in the knowledge that his line is secure and his realm strong, but doubt and fear for the future weaken his resolve.

Name: Ciryaher Eldacar
Race: Noldor
Rank: King
Realm: Lindon
Objectives: Restore Lindon to a mighty kingdom
Brief Bio: A 3rd gen elf, wielder of one of the minor rings of power, the strength of the elder days is still with him, albeit lesser than the days of old, he lived in Eregion for a while in the second age, escaping the fall with his ring and returning to The Grey Havens. After that he kinda just chilled in The grey havens, fought with the elves in the war of the last alliance, and the ring's powers are mainly healing and some minor magical abilities. (minor elemental control, minor telepathy) (telepathy range think like 2-3 miles at max, or for you European peoples that's 3-4km) (when I say minor elemental control I mean like lighting/extinguishing torches and small campfires, small breezes, very small localized rainstorms, minor current & general water control, and minor earth control) (also same as the great rings, warding off the decays of time)

Name: Ivrendîr Gondrenion
Race: Man
Rank: King
Realm: Realm of Mordor
Objectives: The cultivation of Mordor, the recognition of the independent culture of Men in Mordor

Name: Skrun, The King of Excess
Race:Human(Lossoth)
Rank: King/high-chieftain
Realm: Vengard
Objectives: Conquer and raid as far south and west as possible. Experience new heights of debauchery for their fea god along the way.

Do the Ash Mountains have dwarves? I do not recall... I am going to Veto the Grey Mountains holdings as the big inciting incident for the RP will be the Dwarves finally trying to reclaim Gundabad and the surrounding Grey Mountains.

So, a brief search on the region known as 'Harondor' describes it as: "A contested warzone"; with folks from Umbar, Gondor and even Harad staking claims therein. Is that description still more or less relevant by the start of this RPs timeline?

Probably not, after the destruction of the Ring the Haradrim were forced back to Near Harad, and I believe Elessar conquered Haronder for Gondor, and Harad did not threaten Gondor again when the kingdoms were united. But perhaps the death of the king is a reason for Haronder to become threatened again.

To the east and north it wanders thence to the bounds of the Orocarni and the shores of Ered Engrin, and the friendly realms of the Houses of the Four Fathers of Stone, and then south away to the trackless marches near the Sea of Helcar's remnants, and finally to the Eastern Lithlad and the Hills of Watch, where old border-fortresses are manned out of habit rather than threat from the now-quiescent lands of Mordor.
Population: Vast, a number beyond reckoning; directly, Ar-Adûnakhôr's people are many, and of the sworn-swords of the Four Fathers, the Moriquendi of Dorwinion, the Karab-kadarin [known to the West as the Balachoth], and other tribes who owe him fealty or will march to war at his side, his subjects and allies are many.

Do the Ash Mountains have dwarves? I do not recall... I am going to Veto the Grey Mountains holdings as the big inciting incident for the RP will be the Dwarves finally trying to reclaim Gundabad and the surrounding Grey Mountains.

Ah, I see, no worries. Hm. I'll withdraw my application for Durin's Folk then; I don't personally love being locked into inciting events, but I'm sure someone else will be happy to fill it.

In that case it wont be the inciting incident, i wont lock anyone in to events... however Gundabad and the Grey mountains will still not yet be reconquered.

The thing is its a MASSIVE empire, the reunited Kingdoms. Logistically it is going to need to be decentralized. Its also kinda boring if Gondor just owns everything. So lets says Haronder is a front line and contested territory for certain.

As far as the magic goes thats a tall order but we can maybe work some stuff out... As long as she's not some evil secret cultist or worshiper of Morgoth im good to accept. Understanding her twin will be the ruler of Arnor.

Gotcha, gotcha. Truth be told I'm more hot for the Men of the East now, after doing some reading on them and the Second Age, so I'm happy to leave Durin's Folk for someone else to deal with.

Nah, nothing like that. Lilómëien is just power-hungry and doesn't think that the Reunited Kingdom should've been divided once again. She's basically someone that does things "For the greater good."

Alright!

Could you take a look at my app perchance?
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

What type of history are you thinking of for Mordor? Gondorian renegades? Mainly descendants of the slaves of Nurn?
