[QUERY] N-Day6 archives?

Postby Afo » Thu Sep 22, 2022 7:19 am

There are archived leaderboards for the first five N-Days, held between 2017 and 2020. For example, if you want the N-Day2 archives, you can go here, while if you'd rather remember N-Day5, you might want to go here.

But this page - which, according to page numbering precedent, should contain archived leaderboards for N-Day6 (September 2021) - does not exist. And no faction records from that N-Day are currently accessible, owing to faction pre-registration having opened for all, which has meant all previous faction pages and statistics being wiped off the books.

Is there any possibility that we could get N-Day6 leaderboards archived for posterity any time soon? Sorry, but thanks.

"Oh, God - not another puppet of Tinhampton!"
There was once a time when a repeating quatrain
Ensured that there was a perpetual refrain
But after so long, and after so much pain
They decided "Let's not write like that again!"

Well, that's because two goliaths merged last year and dominated the leaderboard.

Chanku: This isn't an election it's an assault on the eyes. | Ikania: Hear! The Gospel of... Satan. Erh...
Yuno: Not gonna yell, but CoS is one of the best delegates ever | Ever-Wandering Souls: In the liberal justice system, raiding-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In The South Pacific, the dedicated defenders who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Council on Regional Security. These are their proscriptions. DUN DUN.

We're looking into this.

While it's true that last was dominated, I can already safely say that's not the reason why the leaderboard of Nday6 isn't there.

Thank you again and I await further updates on this.

(I would also appreciate the N-Day7 leaderboards going up after that event as well.)

Sorry, but due to a database issue we don't have a viable record of N-Day6 stats to archive.

If anyone scraped a complete record of them, let us know.

That no permanent copy appears to have ever been made of the N-Day6 results is confusing as much as it is concerning:
  1. It is not as though the site shits itself into unusability whenever it sees a faction with 10,000 members or 1,000,000 score. From what I recall, the site did not crash during N-Day6 - although I was only up for the first ~16hrs of the event.
  2. NationStates has issued a daily dump of every nation and region in the world every day for the past several years. Data is available for every day of September 2021, when N-Day6 took place (and during the days of the Drewpocalypse, the worst site load event I can remember).
  3. A collection of eight datasets covering 100 factions each, never mind all 500ish of them, is far more compact than the daily dumps by nature, has historical importance, and - in the very worst case - could have been archived at any time for a year after the event. (N-Day4 logs weren't archived until November 2019.)
  4. How could "a database issue" have stopped N-Day6 results from being collected while both daily dumps were issued as normal?

NB: I do not have an explicit answer for (4), this are just my thoughts.

Not all database dumps are created equal. The daily dump is produced one way, N-Day is produced another. Databases are not one giant blob of data, they're separated into tables (presuming that all the data you're talking about is *in* a database to begin with), so an archival script may not necessarily retrieve all the data in a database at any given time. Server load does not necessarily have anything to do with it.

I guess my question would be why no stats were recorded at the time? Generally the stats are published each year along with the end of the event. Even Z-day has recorded stats for last year despite the fact that no actual review of the event was ever made.

What happened: We neglected to run the archive utility - which turns raw numbers from the database into a page of archived stats - both at the end of last year's NDay and before the start of this one, and in the meantime, the backup utility responsible for NDay database tables was malfunctioning and no-one noticed. There might be other ways to reconstruct the stats, but as of right now, we don't have the raw data from NDay6, and we also don't have a backup of that data.

I'm very sorry about this. Normally I double-check the archive just before the start of each NDay event, but because this year we added Faction pre-registration, the tables were wiped three days earlier.

It's a bit more stripped-back than previous years' archives (only top 50 listed, not top 100; no stat-by-stat summary below each faction name; no record of Intercepts) but I can understand why - a relatively streamlined list of records are, of course, better than no records whatsoever. Thanks in any event.

I know this might be a tad late but the waybackmachine seems to have incomplete records of the top 50 factions. Here’s a link to all n-day faction related related links that I could find. https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.nationstates.net/page=factions* And a link to all the n-day nation related links I could find.https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.nationstates.net/page=nukes*
Not sure if this is useful but I’d figured I’d share. I also have some screenshots mostly of my nation and my faction.

It looks like the same bug might have happened to the results for z-day 10

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but weren't the leaderboards at least in one of the news blog posts by Max Barry?

Edit: Here they are: https://www.nationstates.net/page=news/ ... index.html

The tally from Z-Day 10 is MIA. I hope to repair it, the data needed has been archived.
