There are large protests against the Iranian government after 22-year old Mahsa Amini was arrested and killed after she wore her hijab while showing too much hair.
After she was arrested by the so-called "Morality Police" she was in a state of coma for 3 days and died soon after. Massive protests have erupted by women against the Iranian government. The Iranian police are responding violently, with riot shields, guns etc.
In my opinion, this is a good thing, and if it succeeds it may just overthrow the Ayatollahs.

It reminds me a bit of the January 2022 Kazakhstan protests. Anger explodes, and bodies drop. As much as I would like to see the Iranian government overthrown (and Russia lose yet another ally, alongside basically all of CSTO at this point), it does feel a bit wary that it will happen. At least not without tons of bloodshed.

I am exceedingly confident that this will go nowhere, unfortunately. Dictators don't tend to fall from protesting women, they fall from total revolution, and I don't think this will turn into that. True, but if you look at the 1979 revolution you'll see that it began with mass protests. That said, I'm not sure that there's a central rallying program or figure like Khomeini was just yet, so it may very well collapse without accomplishing much. But mass protests also present an excellent environment for a revolutionary platform to emerge for the future.

This is far from the first time in recent years that we have seen significant political unrest in Iran. I'm not sure that there's any reason to believe that these protests will lead directly to any more significant consequences than the ones we saw in 2017 or 2019. However, there is always room for hope, and the fact that major nationwide protests against the Iranian regime seem to be becoming frequent events doesn't bode well for the future of the Islamic Republic. I am personally looking forward to 29th October, which Iranian royalists have been celebrating as Cyrus the Great Day since the early 2000s and tends to be associated with protests against the regime and in favour of the return of the Pahlavi monarchy (the 29th also happens to be Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi's birthday). I would like to see the Pahlavi dynasty and the 1906 constitution restored, and the odious tyranny of the ayatollahs brought to an end.

From my reading elsewhere, I do understand that the protests have been increasingly larger with every iteration, and we only missed seeing large ones in recent years because Covid essentially snuffed out public life there for awhile (and elsewhere, of course).
