Tbh the west should have carved out a piece of Germany and given it to the Jews after the war. Why should a bunch of Arabs suffer because of what Europeans did?

Because Israel has nothing to do with Holocaust in and of itself? Not quite sure why everyone keeps bringing this up, the establishment of Israel had nothing to do with the Holocaust other than a coalition of Arab countries wanting to finish the job, and Jews not wanting them to do that after they'd already been invaded.

Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better, American. The link is solid.

Other than the effects of the Holocaust on the Jews being threatened by a second genocide less than two years later, there is no link whatsoever, much less a solid one. Not an American either.

Whether the 1947 Partition Plan was just or unjust is a valid point of discussion, though nothing more than an interesting exercise at this point.

I don't get how carving out a piece of Germany and making it a Jewish state—presumably ethnically cleansing Germans along the way—is any better, though.

Also, y'know. I get that "Israel bad!" but ultimately, it doesn't have much to do with Israeli elections.

Never ceases to amuse how little effort the Israeli right puts into hiding the fact that as far as they're concerned the Nazi's pretty much had the right idea, they were just wrong about who exactly had the right to blood and soil and who needed to be purged for the security and purity of the fatherland.

As much as they're romanticised, Jabotinsky, Stern, and Begin were quite vile characters.

It's a fascinating topic of study, actually, to see how literal terrorists' crimes were either covered up or ignored in the state-building and nation-building process. That's not what you see every day. And I'm fully aware of the "yeah well isn't every state-building exercise like that?" pseudo-argument—even so, Israel is a...unique case. Well, I don't want to say unique, per se, just unusual.

If the latest batch of polls to come out following the deadline of the submission of party lists is anything to go by it still might not be enough to prevent the Joint List from losing seats. Best case scenario for Lapid is literally 60-60 with support from Hadash-Ta'al, assuming nobody raises any objections.

Now it's Lapid's turn for a boost: Truss tells Lapid that UK is considering moving Embassy to Jerusalem

If this goes through, Lapid will have a hell of a feather in his cap and might recall some of the Right elements of parties like National Unity back to supporting a Yesh Atid-led coalition.

On this Rosh Hashanah, the latest polls from Channel 13 and Channel 14 give the Likud Bloc a clear majority of 61-62 seats for the first time.

So if Likud win would this stall Bibi's trial? Seems like now that things are underway it shouldn't but I have no clue how Israeli law works.

The pm is immune to prosecution I think.

he isn't immune, but if his block of parties reaches the majority they could change it (along with limits on the high court's power to counter their efforts).

the last idea they've floated is to abolish the offense of “fraud and breach of trust" - Netanyahu is charged with this offense in all three of the cases for which he is currently on trial, along with a bribery charge in one of the cases.

Ah, so basically similar to what the Republicans want to do for January 6th if they win the House. Got it. Typical politics then, I still have my fingers crossed he goes down.

We now have the final list of vote sharing agreements for next week's vote

The polls still have the Likud Bloc just around 60-62.

The Blue and White look nice enough. As well as that, I’m all for Palestinian rights.
Taiwan is a country, Tiananmen protests DID happen, and the Chinese government is a dictatorship. Deal with it.
An alt world STRONK Slovakia where the duchy of Nitra never fell, adopted Christianity and defended it. It also established as a regional superpower. It controls the lands of Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia. The Hungarians also never were a major culture!

No, that was Netanyahu's intention heading into the disaster that was 2019-2020. The whole reason he desperately needs the Likud to win is because he thinks—probably rightfully so—that a right-wing majority will pass an immunity law, keeping his corrupt arse out of prison.

Considering the polls, he might get what he wants.

It's funny, because Smotrich and Ben-Gvir kind of do fit the bill. Not that it's not a terrible faux pas considering that it's, uh, Israel.

I don't know why I'm not even surprised Likud got the majority vote again to be honest. Might be because of the recent spats in Judea-Samaria but Idk.

Partially that and partially because Lapid/Bennett's administration was a crumbly mess from the start. At least the Likud Bloc is ideologically consistent, so you know what you're getting with Bibi: Corruption and Rightward movement towards the eventual annexation.
