The Hwanghu Conference (IC/Meillur Only)

Postby Kingdom of Derita » Thu Aug 18, 2022 3:49 pm

Port Hwanghu, Celestial Empire

The port of Hwanghu was a small cramp City vastly cobbled together by the influx of migrants and settlers who’d arrived in the far flung northern territory. The population had more than doubled in the last three years since it was formally established by Marijani d’Aurelains, mother of the Celestial Emperor and wife of the Emperor of Nemidia. Hugging the deep water port on its spot along the typically swampy Seoyese coastline, it was a place of constant construction and mixing between Deritain and Seoyese culture, for better or for worse. It’s position so far north and on the Andejanes Strait that separated the Western Ocean from the Borean Sea, made it a prime port, as well the best location for an unprecedented meeting between the Paras of Patuania and the Celestial Emperor.

The Celestial Emperor, twenty-two year old Andeja IV, had been only days before across three strait in Nemidia with his mother, stepfather and new baby half brothers. He had made the hope and skip across the strait to Hwanghu to await the arrival of the Patuanian warship, the Avengence which was to carry the Baron and Lady Yoyo, after over a year in Patuanian de facto house arrest back home. And the Paras had made it all the more important by wishing to meet. Tensions had been rising recently between Seoya and Patuania, the two behemoths of the north, and while peace was talked about, both sides were gathering armies. And both sides had started looking to the Celestial Empire to throw its weight behind on or the other. Andeja IV, long prepared for a fight in the north still maintained an army of 30,000 troops on the Andejanes Archipelago, waiting to strike.

It was simply a matter of deciding who was to be the target.

Andeja, dressed in the militant black ceremonial uniform of a celestial commander, gold embroidered down the front, a black cape falling from his shoulders, the sun crown sitting on his head, stood tall and stone faced, like dark god of the cosmos. He hated the outfit. It was more of a costume he felt. He preferred the simple comforts of the Hemakan suit that he had popularized. But then, he was not friends with the Paras, this was not a casual meeting. It was one set on a backdrop of anger, betrayal and revenge. There was no room for Andeja the man. Only Andeja the Sun.

This was all reinforced by the members of Ardales family who had accompanied him. The three Yoyo children, Ava, Celena and Jean, the latter of who stood at the Celestial Emperor’s side in a bespoke suit. He and Kanatus had been lovers, before… well before a great deal had happened. Jean, with his hair shorn short and his eyes harden, was prepared to confront the Paras to holding his parents hostage. This hostility was amplified in the person of the Duchess of Infinity, mother of the Lady Yoyo. Though 96, and seated in a chair and blind, the Duchess cut a fiercesomr figure, having threatened to raise a private army of her own to invade Patuania in order to liberated her daughter. And as the richest woman in the empire, it was well within her means.

Stephen Ardales, a key figure in the bureaucracy of the central government was also there, fading slightly into the background. Lord Jama Ardales, ambassador to Nemidia, had sent his wife, Lady Songe Ardales and lastly rounding out the clan of the second most powerful family in the empire, was the Celestial Emperor’s uncle Lord Avi Ardales. Lord Avi was particularly miffed, as it had been in his own home that Kanatus had Mary Jean, sparking this great disaster all these years later. The Ardales clan were a riot of emotion, twitching between desperate to se their parents and prepared to attack the Paras on sight.

The Avengence settled it’s massive bulk into the port of Hwanghu with great fanfare, the prestige vessel flying the blue and white flags of the Commonwealth. The gangplank was lowered from the ship and stepping off came Admiral Voatis Heija, who had been given the massive flagship as his position in large of the Patuanian Naval Fleet, a thus far small but growing arm of the Commonwealth’s military arms.

Admiral Heija was a average looking man, dressed in a white uniform and bicorne hat topped with grand feathers. This was not a military mission, and thus, the Paras had instructed them to in a way, match the grandeur of the Celestial Empire with smaller, but crisper decorations to show that while the Commonweath was smaller, it was not intimidated, nor did they wish to fully copy the decadence of the south.

Behind Admiral Heija came a small squadron of naval officers, who, dressed as if they were going to a parade, escorted the Baron and Lady Yoyo down the gangplank, treating them with silent respect, adopting an heir of neutrality that was highlighted by the typically cold attitude that was noted well amongst outsiders on Patuania. Contrary to popular belief, the Paras had been careful to keep the Yoyos safe, keeping them in the Parasijava in relative comfort, with himself largely avoiding them.

They stepped off the gangplank and the Admiral gave the Celestial Emperor a bow. He gestured to the Yoyos.

“His Excellency wishes to see Baron and Lady Yoyo safely reunited with their family before talks officially begin. It is with great honor that the Paras served as protector of them.”

The Ardales and the Yoyo largely ignored the Patuanian man as they spotted Cebo and Adela. The Baron and his wife were unharmed, though both were thinner than they’d been when they’d left the Celestial, the Baron in particular. His hair had gone gray, and a perm at scowl was on his face. Lady Adela’s eyes were ringed with dark circles. They’d barely stepped onto the dock when Ava rushed pass the others and all but tackled her mother, squeezing her tightly.

“Mama!”

With this being the first friendly face that they’d seen in more than a year, Adela cling tightly to her daughter, as if she were a floatation ring in the midst of a storm. Celena was not far behind and was so hugging Cebo. The man, always a bit gruff and ever more jaded by his experience in Patuania, a country he’d always hated since he’d been appointed as envoy there, melted slightly in his daughter’s arms. He’s fingers formed a fist as he held onto her.

“Oh,” Cebo said, his deep voice crackling, “Oh my Celena.” It had been more than a year for the Yoyo Sisters seeing their parents, Ava having been in Hyrea and Celena in Aukusa City before they had departed for Patuania. Indeed, Celena had even married and had a child in the years since she’d last seen her mother and father, a daughter named Adela.

Soon the foursome were all in tears and they hugged and held one another, relief filling them as Ava and Celena led them to join the others. Stephan hugged his mother, kissing her on the forehead. At the Celestial Emperor’s side Jean however stood still, his eyes shooting to the ship. Where was Kanatus? His thoughts were interrupted by the shouts of his father.

Safely back behind friendly lines and flanked by Lord Avi and Lady Songe, the Baron whirled on the Patuanian.

“… insufferable, and terrible!” The Baron was shouting. “To treat an envoy in such a way! Never have I’ve been meant to suffer such indignity! Damn the Paras! I’d damn him to hell, but your abominable taiga your call a home is certainly hell itself! I spit him! I pray the Emperor himself sets Parasijava ablaze!”

Lord Avi practically had to hold his uncle back. Meanwhile Adela had made her way over to her mother, dropping to her knees and gripping her hand tightly. She sobbed into her mother’s skirts, but the Duchess of Infinity soothed her, her aged hand smoothing her youngest child’s hair. “Worry not my dove. Worry not.” The duchess’s unseening eyes turned towards the direction of the Patuanian’s voice. “Avengence,” the duchess scoffed, recalled being told the name of the ship that carried her daughter. “I shall show avengence.”

The Celestial Emperor watched with a mix of horror and anger as the Yoyos were reunited. He was happy for them. But he loathed the Paras for having separated them in the first place. And part of him was made at his mother and his late father for having sent the Baron away in the first place. The alliance with Patuania had been short lived, amounting to nothing once his father had died, and yet here they were years later still experiencing the scars of that aborted alliance.

As the Baron and Lady Yoyo calmed, they bother presented themselves to the Celestial Emperor, bowing low to the ground. The Celestial Emperor raised them both up. They would need something. A raise in their title, a more land, something to account for all that they had been through. Later though. For now he looked to Jean, who seemed like a statue. The Celestial Emperor instructed his uncle, Lord Avi to take the Yoyos to a nearby hotel where they had rooms waiting for them. With this, Cebo, Adela, the Yoyo sisters, Lord Avi, and Lady Songe departed, leaving the duchess, Jean and Stephan at the Celestial Emperor’s side as they waited for Kanatus to disembark.

“I believe we are ready to begin,” The Celestial Emperor said a regal imperious tone.

Admiral Heija watched as the Yoyos reunited with one another. Even he could not say that he was entirely unmoved by the sight of parent and child being brought back together. But such sympathy was in short supply as the Baron railed against him and the general state of Patuania. He had not been a very difficult passenger, and it annoyed Heija that the Baron had suddenly gained such a voice once safely behind the Celestial Emperor. It was a great relief when he and most of the others left. With a raving man like that, it was luckily anything was to get done.

“Of course,” said Heija, waving his hand up to the top of the gangplank. Somewhere onboard just out of sight from through the dock someone blew a horn in announcement. Appearing at the crest of the gangplank came the final member of the Patuanian delegation. Only, it was not the tall mountainous figure of the Paras of Patuania, but instead the pale beautiful form of Queen Oruk of Imarati. Oruk held her head high, her platinum blond hair shining in the daylight, her eyes cold and glistening like a melting glacier. Her dress was an embroidered, square collar burgundy couture dress of satin and raffia skirts. The front bodice of the dress was simply embroidered with a field of silver thread crosses. A black and white sash went across her shoulder and around her waist. The feminine figure, inspired by the Hereditary Princess of Gosataborg, made her shimmer like a snowflake that had been cast in blood. Oruk had assessorized the outfit with a small subtle platinum and ruby tiara, a ruby choker necklace, two bracelets, and day gloves, and black flats. She was no longer the dazzling Princess that had entered the Celestial Empire years ago. Instead now the pale white rose of Patuanis embodied the imagery of a northern Queen.

As she stepped off of the gangplank and onto the dock, she looked up and despite herself, sucked in a deep breath. It took all her power not to let out a shuddering exhale. Queen Oruk put her hands together as she approached the Celestial Emperor and with great and practiced etiquette and restraint, she curtsied to him. She rose slowly, her head rising, then her eyes, as they fell upon the man before her, so similar and yet so different from the boy that she had last seen. She spoke, her voice like the first touch of snow falling in the winter.

“Greetings, Your Imperial Majesty.” Her voice held, only for her to stall, to hesitant, remembering what she had been told to say. The Paras, those were the words she was supposed to say next. Instead she alternated them, ever so slightly. “My cousin, he sends his regards.”

Time seemed to stand still as Oruk appeared on the gangplank. Andeja froze, becoming a living statue of browns, black and gold. Heavens, he thought, his chest tightening till it felt like he couldn’t breath. Damn Kanatus.

It had been three and a half years since Andeja had seen Oruk. His throat felt as if it were on fire, like he had just swallowed a star. She was as breathtaking now as she had been then. He had only just become emperor, and they had been together, tangled in one another’s arms. That was how it had been when he’d found out.and suddenly he had been whisked away, and they had assured ond another, they would see each other soon.

But grief and ambition, both theirs and those of others had separated them. The Duke of Alencon and his coup, the Paras and his political machinations. The death of an emperor, an king and a queen all in quick succession, and the two men who stood to profit from it had torn apart Andeja and Oruk’s engagement and love. And by the time either of them had been in a position to recover, had things not been too late? The Black Wedding had been carried out, and the Inama was determined to focus on the economic growth of the empire.

And now they were together. Reunited, Andeja was certain, but the cruelty of Kanatus. This had been a trick. A trap. A cruel jap at Andeja, and he suspected, he hoped, at Oruk’s expense. Kanatus hadn’t wished to speak of peace. Instead he had only wished to inflict more pain by ripping open old wounds. Wounds that Andeja had thought he had closed and healed. He had loved and lost several times over. Yet, Oruk had been his first love. She had been the woman he’d truly saw himself spending the rest of his life with. And when that had been dashed, a part of his life with anyone totally, was also dashed.

Andeja blinked back tears in his eyes. He felt sick, and it took alll his willpower not to retreat from her, or to retch on the docks. Thankfully Jean was there, and he saw that look in his friend’s frozen face. It was one of heartbreak and longing, of mourning what could have been. He knew it because he had expected, only on his own face. Kanatus wasn’t here. He wasn’t coming. There wouldn’t be an apology, no remorse, Jean realized. His heart ached at it. It seemed so unfair for their relationship to slip into the night so. But Jean had always been the more politically astute of his friends.

This was a gambit, a harsh and daring one. Jean recalled Kanatus’ speech. Of offering olive branches. Of course he still seem to manage to strike them with it. Jean stepped between Oruk and Andeja, gripping the latter’s arm. Andeja was ruled by his emotions, and dealing with Oruk would be like playing with Cinyroite fire.

“His Imperial Majesty regrets the Paras’ absence,” Jean said. He pushed down that ache in his chest, looking at Andeja even as he spoke to Oruk. His words seem to slightly dislodge Andeja who gave something that, if one squinted was a nod. Jean turned to Oruk. “Please, the Marjaem Hotel is just down way, please, Your Majesty, join us for tea there.”

Jean gestured to a hotel indeed within eyeshot during down the harbor. It was a graceful mixture of Aukusan and Seoyese styles. Jean quickly stirred Andeja, who numbly walked, to a town car and the two got in it. The remaining Ardales got into a second, while a third was set aside for the Admiral and the Queen of Imarati. It was a short drive, barely four minutes, but in those intervening four minutes Jean did all he could to try and get Andeja to snap out of his stupor.

He unfroze, only to burst into tears in that small privacy of the car. “I can’t meet with her,” Andeja said, weeping into Jean’s shoulder, “I won’t.” Jean held him, hugging his friend tightly.

“It’s okay. It’s okay.” Jean said, trying to sooth Andeja. He was only just able to dry his tears by the time the car pulled up in front of the Marjaem, only for Jean to instruct the driver to take them around back. They entered the hotel through the rear entrance, being escorted to the tea room to meet with Oruk and the others there. Or least that was the plan till Andeja froze at the door.

“I won’t meet with her. I can’t,” Andeja said, echoing his sentiments in the car.

“But—“ Jean started.

“Tell them I am not feeling well, or some great matter has come up, but I am not going.” Andeja said with shaky finality. He stepped back from the door and nodded, as if making up his mind. He gripped Jean’s arm. “Please. Do thus for me.”

Jean’s eyes went wide. A part of him wanted to scream ‘what?’. He wasn’t prepared nor qualified for this. He’d been prepared to be the emotional wreck, not the one with a level head. No. He couldn’t. He shouldn’t. And yet… Kanatus was not there. Jean held no love nor hate of Oruk, and he knew more of Patuania and the Paras than any Deritain alive. He’d always trained to be an advisor, and while he had not completed university, neither had Andeja when he’d been handed the reins of power. And then there was the fact that, simply, Andeja was the Celestial Emperor. His words, even when framed as requests, were commands.

“O-okay.”

This is how it came to be that Lord Jean Yoyo, Stephan Ardales and the Duchess of Infinity, rather than the Celestial Emperor waiting in the tea room for Queen Oruk of Imarati and Admiral Heija, rather than Paras Kanatus II.

Queen Oruk entered the tea room with her head held high. She had seen instantly the affect that she’d had on Andeja. It was like being stabbed in the heart. But this was no place for her tears. She had not seen him in so long, she had tried so hard to suffocate her feelings, to reduce them to something small and lock away able in a box far from her conscious mind. She had made her peace, agreed, finally, to the life set before her in Imarati. And just as she had settled into that, Kanatus had dragged her before her bare heart and made her taste the blood it bled.

Oruk however hesitated, if only for a second when she saw that Andeja was gone. She didn’t know if that made her feel better or worse. It was less painful to not have to see him, to not look into his eyes and ponder and wonder what might have, what could have, what should have been. And yet. The fact that he refused to see her, for that what his absence had to mean, that he wouldn’t see her, that he had no wish to, it was a second stab at her heart. Which as worse? The young Queen could not say.

“Lord Yoyo,” Oruk said haltedly, taking her seat before him stiffly while Admiral Heija remained standing behind her. “His Imperial Majesty,” she couldn’t say his name. She fear she could not do what she came here, what she had been assigned to do, if she did, “will not be joining us?”

Jean looked down at the table, not wishing to meet Oruk’s eyes. He was not a man built for lying he realized. At least not in desperate situations, like that type in Hyrea. It always seemed to be so… inconvenient in the long run. “I am afraid not Your Majesty. The Celestial Emperor has sudden important matters that have just come up. He has instructed me to lead the negotiations. The Celestial Emperor appreciates you for your understanding.”

Oruk pursed her lips. She noticed that even in his absence, Andeja was held as infallible and she was meant to have already accepted the sudden departure. Even so she could not be entirely mad at it. What Kanatus had arranged had been a one too punch in his own absence and her own presence. She was indeed surprised by how seamlessly Andeja had left and put Jean in his place, but not perplexed by it.

“It seems we have more in common than one might have previously expected Lord Yoyo. Of that I am dreadfully sorry.”

Jean raised his head slightly as to look the Queen in the eyes. He had naturally bowed his head, as he was accustomed to doing around the Imperial Family. He had slowly started to grow out of it in Patuania, where the Paras was not a royal, but it had returned with the Queen of Imarati, till now.

“I don’t have a kingdom,” Jean said matter of factly. “So forgive me if I find that comparison bit lacking. After all, deers and lions both hunger. Would you say that they have much in common in that regard?”

Oruk shifted in her seat, startled by Lord Yoyo’s respond. She had hoped that perhaps the too might be able to comfort one another in their positions, with their… complex relationships with the other’s rulers, and yet it seemed that she had frozen off the hearts of all the Deritain men around her. Or rather, as she suspected was the case with Lord Yoyo, her cousin had been the culprit behind that. Though as to Andeja, Oruk admitted she shared a deal of that blame.

“And which,” Oruk asked, placing her hands on her knee as she crossed her legs. “Lord Yoyo, do you believe you are? Lion or deer?”

Jean smiled at Oruk. She didn’t have the same effect on him as she had on Andeja. No, instead it was the spectre of the man who had sent her that grind like a grain of sand in a clam for Jean. How much of what she said was her own words? And how much was her speaking, but simply reciting the script of the paras? In part he suspected that there had been a break, a crack in the act and Oruk had spotted from the heart.

Only Jean was uninterested in Oruk’s heart. Like a moth to a flame a part of him craved the words given to her by Kanatus. Ambition had always been there, underneath his polite, polished surface. He had craved it with the Paras, he’d done what he could to influence and advise, and yet Kanatus had always seemed hesitant to let him. And now they, if in spirit of not in person, say on opposite sides of the table. Jean was curious to see how he might do.

“Shall we find out?” Jean made a simple gesture and a server came in and pour the pair, for were they not the pair that truly matter in the moment?

Queen Oruk raised her head and sat with her back rigid against her character. Lord Yoyo was less malleable than she had thought. No wonder her cousin liked him. Though she wasn’t sure if that boded well for this meeting. “I don’t suppose we are going to be friends,” Oruk said, admitting defeat in that regard. “Though that doesn’t mean that we need be enemies.”

“My cousin,” Oruk said again, only for her to pause. With Andeja she had felt that obscuring the image of Kanatus would help sooth the process. But with Lord Yoyo, he seemed to at least be more direct about things. Perhaps her attempts would have the opposite effect and thus she needed to do the opposite. “Kanatus, sees similarity in the commonwealth and the Celestial Empire. Not perhaps in culture or people admittedly, but in our positions and views of the world.”

“The Celestial Empire has never been happy with its fall from grace after the collapse. You all desire more. You seek hegemony. Because you know that at the helm, you can guide the world to a better future.”

Jean raised an eyebrow. He put a hand on his knee leaning back in his own seat and tilting her head as listened to Oruk’s words. There was truth in them, and they struck a cord with Jean. That desire to get into the room where it happened, to affect things. The very thing that always seemed to be denied to him. The Celestial Empire always, and even currently held the legal belief that it was held over the rest of the world, something that even technically brought about issues with other nations.

“I imagine you are coming around to a point?”

“The world is wide enough for the both of us,” Oruk said, ignoring the sharpness of Lord Yoyo’s comment. “Of the four great circles of the continent, the Borean is but one, the Celestial Empire another. Let us secure our borders, as the Celestial Empire certainly desires for themselves. In that we have common cause.

Oruk lifted a delicate hand, waving off in a general wasting direction. “Seoya is friend of no one, and is a vast country. The League of Armed Neutrality continue to drag their feet over admitting them in, while Minixus alone has tried to be their champion, but his attention will be taken further and further west onto his new dark continent. Should the Celestial Empire stand behind Hojin, you will be propping him up, effectively alone.”

“And, Lord Yoyo, you know as well as I that such a conflict will not go smoothly. Marijani d’Aurelains has newborns, I don’t imagine seeing her on battlefields. Ngonyama seems good on paper, but he is untested. We have Voarok and Kayak, proven generals who have reaped devastation. It would be a long costly war, and even if the Celestial Empire wins, it shall be in the far future, at great lost.”

“Can that be allowed? His Imperial Majesty is angering his court, scandalizing his people, shaking the very foundations of the oldest monarchy in the world. Can you imagine how millions will react if he declares war and over…” Oruk hesitated and her voice cracked through the words Kanatus had made her practice saying. “Over…over a bruised heart?” Tears formed in her eyes, but the Queen of Imarati blinked her eyes, refusing to let them fall.

“Emotion and rhetoric pushed you and the Empire to rage against Patuania, Lord Yoyo. We have wounded you, whether it be your heart or your pride, but let us not forget who was the first to do so.” Oruk again spoke Kanatus’s words, the cold expression referencing both the break from the Commonwealth and Celestial Empire’s treaty following Andeja III’s death, the Black Wedding and Jean’s own leaving of Kanatus and the Yoyo Affair. “Logic and the greater good,” continued Oruk, “surely tells you to join us. If the Celestial Empire is the sun, we in the north are content in being the moon, each dancing across our own half of the sky in harmony.”

Jean raised his eyebrows. The audacity of such a proposal was stunning. That was not to say though that it was without reason. It had long been the goal of the Celestial Empire to ensure there was a protective buffer around it. Under Andeja II they had been able to largely achieve that with their series of alliances, though much had changed in the intervening years. Riessany and Seoya were both treated with an uneasy neutrality as opposed to outright dislike.

In his mind Jean imagined a map of the continent. Nemidia and Great Hyruke were both islands, and the Genoise had begun pulling further and further away. Riessany was an issue, particularly with its dying king. Seoya was however the largest of the Celestial Empire, the only one who, under the right conditions could field armies the size of the Celestial Empire’s. Only in competence had prevented that, something that could change under Hojin.

“Seoya can not be allowed to fall under Patuanian control. Nor can it’s unpredictable neutrality be allowed to continue. It is two large, too populous. We will not accept the Borean League to come to our borders,” said Jean. He carefully selected his words, setting hard lines and yet leaving room for framework of something. It was up to Oruk to construction a pleasing form.

Oruk tilted her head, a small smile tugging at her lips, understanding that she had, finally, gotten a bit on the lure she had worked so hard on. She thought for a moment, weighing the interests of Patuania and the Borean League. Wrestling Seoya into the Borean League would be, in her opinion, nigh impossible. Hojin was not a boy king like his unfortunate predecessor. Removing him from power would be difficult. But Patuania and Kanatus needed a victory. As did the Celestial Empire. The best for the former would be if Andeja joined them, but Lord Yoyo had set the line beyond that. The best for the latter would be for them to drop it. Something Kanatus would never do.

“We require a farce,” said the Queen of Imarati.

Jean spread his hand in a vague gesture, his mind considering a grand farce indeed. He could see benefit in their two nations being friends, and the benefit in them being enemies. It was something, he thought, that perhaps they could be both at the same time. After all, the first treaty between the commonwealth and the Celestial Empire had been a secret one. There was leverage against the rest of the world if they were enemies in public but something more amiable in private.

“There are a great many Patuanians living in the far side of the Naaka River, and tensions have been building up for some time. If the Borean League were to intervene in their favor, to reunite them with their brethren, there will be protests, but they shall die down. But if Kanatus were to march on Hwacheon itself, why, then the Celestial Empire would have to step in to defend our dear northern friend Seoya.”

Jean shrugged his shoulders. “Particularly if members of the Seoyese government were to be eliminated. We in the Empire would simply have to step in to help them and maintain the internal peace of their realm.”

Queen Oruk looked at Lord Yoyo, following along with his train of thought. She pictured it in her mind, the advancing frontline to a point. She could see it, a lighting campaign that surged across the Naaka Valley, racing across the flat interior of the Seoyese countryside, only for them to halt outside of Hwacheon. Or, given Lord Yoyo’s tone, halted. A single battle could paint a great many pictures of them each. A victory in the Celestial Empire could be easily spun by Kanatus to be a great feat. Particularly if he was still able to claim a chunk of the valley for the commonwealth.

“Seoya has already lost one king. Another such lost would cause doubtless great instability.”

Jean shook his head at the Queen of Imarati’s words. All in the Celestial Empire had been angered by the removal of the previous king of Seoya, the unfortunate boy king, who even now remained in a golden cage on the picturesque western coast of the Empire, forever banished from his homeland. Amongst those angered by his removal had been the Celestial Emperor himself. And yet, while he had been angered at Hojin for doing so, Jean knew that that meant Andeja wouldn’t do the same.

“No,” Jean said firmly. “Regicide shall not be on the menu, Your Majesty,” said Jean, emphasizing that she herself was a royal. The Patuanians had an off view of royalty, and both seemed, to him, to imagine their leaders and their families both equal to foreign royals, but also fundamentally different, a confusing thought. But Oruk was a proper queen. “King Hojin shall remain. The head may remain clear, even with the body crippled.”

Oruk chewed her lip. Killing Hojin would be the easiest path. He had destroyed the previous system of government in Seoya and reforged it around himself. Not enough time had passed for them to find a replacement for the childless unmarried monarch. Without him, then struck with a full blown war, Seoya would fall in days. With him still at the helm, the fight would be real, even with their farce playing out.

“Then we shall need someone and something else.” She thought for a moment. “Ryang Songmin then. And it would have to be in quick succession before any actions on the field. And Hojin would remain an issue. He is a proud man who shall not take slights easily. If the Borean League were to have Perev, then that could balance such scales.”

Jean bit his lip, thinking. Perev was close towards the border with the Celestial Empire. But there lay rivers and mountains betwix them and that could realistically negate. It was Borean arrogance that thought that by taking more that would be enough to dampened Hojin’s ego. No. It would only further enflame it. Which could be made useful down the line. After all, there was no way they could forever hold Perev.

“If you may have the land, we shall take the waters. Lake Bacray shall go to the Celestial Empire. In its entirety.”
