War in Taugvitistan Escalates - IC

[Malkaestan]

The War in Taugvitistan, starting fully in 2016, was originally an entirely internal Malkaestani affair, and had not warranted any foreign involvement. However, recently, the frontlines have become elastic once more, with the United Taugviti Front (composed of the People's Republic of Taugvitistan and the Sultanate of Taugvitistan) beginning attacks on key Malkaestani positions, with the Malkaestani government retaliating by sending in more battalions to crush the pockets of resistance. In just the past week, there have been more casualties than the entire month before that.

Following this period of battle and guerrilla warfare, more local revolts began, combined with the Malkaestani Armed Forces being accused of crimes against humanity, with many of the main accusers being the states of Litsserlund and Wairca.

With this development, the possibility of foreign involvement has greatly increased due to the change from small guerilla fighting to a fully blown sectarian civil war.

OOC: Note that the People's Republic and Suitanate are not fighting yet, except for occasional border conflicts.

[Taugvitistan]

The Commander of the People's Liberation Force of Taugvitistan, the primary militia of the People's Republic, sat in his war office. Sounds of artillery sounded in the distance, along with gunfire.

Other officers of the militia sat at the table around him. They had been discussing plans for an offensive southwards, to break out of the southmost pocket and into the deep canyons of Southern Taugvitistan.

Despite lacking air superiority, the Commander thought that they should break into the canyon and fight their way through towards Malkaestani airbases. The Army was losing morale, and a key victory now would be needed to sustain the war effort.

"Begin the offensive."

The Taugviti militias were given the order, and began working their way southwards. The main bulk of the southern force was trapped on a hill, but after three waves of assault and many casualties, the militias finally broke through and out of the hill. The troops began pouring into the canyons, rapidly to take cover from nonstop air assault. The first phase of the attack was a success.

Ryker was a tall man, gaunt, the left side of his face burned and twisted by the nuclear fire of Ash Friday. He was also head of Government Section 205, and by extension the many unpleasant, covert and strange departments that the USSK didn't want to admit to utilizing. Today he was to deliver a briefing to the Party Chairman herself, a briefing on some dusty hole called Taugvitistan.

He was embarrassed by the gaps in the report, it was a shortfall in intelligence that would be addressed the next morning. But first the Chairman, a man dressed in Army issue fatigues opened a large, wooden door and ushered Ryker though to the Chairman's office. She was standing by a tall window that overlooked the downtown core of Grand Peaks, dressed in a simple black suit. Ryker stepped towards her desk and slowly sat in one of the chairs in front of it.

Without turning the Chairman spoke, softly yet clearly.
"Thank you for coming Ryker, I trust the journey was not to taxing?"

"Not at all, its been slow since that business on Unification Day, I have the report you requested."
As Ryker spoke the Chairman turned and walked towards him and took the folder he held out towards her.
"Thank you, you always deliver."
She smiled and leafed through the file, without looking up, she continued.
"Not a lot here, I presume this is a preliminary overview?"

"Naturally, Chairman."
He shifted in his seat.
"I've taken the liberty of rerouting a satellite over the region, and sent two field agents for ground intel, they should arrive in a few days. In addition the 2nd Airmobile Brigade has sent it's 1st Battalion and its aircraft on training manoeuvres, if you require a more overt reaction, they will be equipped and ready."

The Chairman smiled.
"Exceptional as always Ryker, I look forward to your report, pass my regards to your agents when they return."

Ryker slowly rose, saluted and walked out, as the Chairman returned to the window and once again opened the folder...

The first steps had been completed, where they would lead was a mystery only time would reveal.

The positions of 4th Royal Armored Brigade would be rather thinly spread between major population centers, where white-painted armor would quite often patrol the streets or escort civilian convoys in and out of towns, cities and villages, to deter marauding and lawlessness. Essentially not intervening on neither side, they would attempt to work with the local governments to establish “green corridors” for civilians to leave areas where border skirmishes took place, assist the local police units in maintaining law and order and assist in dispersing the essentials, such as warm food and water. Many multipurpose tankers of the Brigade, usually used for transferring tank fuel would receive new tanks, full of clean water, which they would then attempt to deliver to small towns.

It should be noted, that while the peacekeeping units will never attack first, but rather would hold their ground, repeatedly attempting to deter aggressor from being a menace to them, if provoked, they can and will chase down whatever dared to oppose them using their full firepower- as aptly described by an artillery man: “Peace never comes from an end of a pistol barrel, but it does come from the end of a 155-mm self-propelled howitzer engaging a building in which the hostile is in using direct fire”.

Moreover than that, putting local civilian lives on as high value as their own, they will act on their own even if it would mean getting in direct confrontation with organized army units, if they will have a confirmed information that said “organized unit” is actively threatening civilian lives or marauding. Considering their superior training, equipment and extensive experience in conflicts resembling this one the command hopes that their mere presence should be enough to deter such acts happening by large, and would persuade the combatants to prosecute acts of war crimes on their own, without any pressure from international forces being needed.

Finally, the local medical forces (the armored brigade brings their own medical company) will accept wounded from both sides of the conflict as well as wounded civilians, and give them the necessary treatment regardless of the circumstances. Their position as a civilized power puts some burden, after all…

After some silence, Malkaestan condemns the peacekeepers for getting involved without even gaining permission of the Malkaestani government first, and questions the peacekeepers' true goals. Local police forces are told to keep a watchful eye on the peacekeepers and follow them wherever they go.

Meanwhile, on the frontline with the Taugviti rebels in the North, Malkaestani artillery ramps up its bombardment of the area, while soldiers begin preparations for an offensive.

The 2nd Battalion and 12th Squadron are not to initiate combat but are authorized to both return fire and use any means, short of NBC assets, to neutralize the attacking force. They will be providing advanced training to local forces and accompanying them in the field in their capacity as advisors.

The 2nd Battalion has been issued 200 Altyn Helmets and 200 Ratnik 6B45/6B43 armour suits for field testing, deployment and training with the new equipment will occur in the theatre of operations at the discretion of Colonel Weathers.

Deployment in the field will occur between 0700 and 1200 hours at an airfield outlined in section 5 of this folder, all local forces have been notified of your presence, and the pilots of your transport planes have already been briefed on the airlift operation. A second flight of cargo aircraft will deliver fuel and logistical supports after 2nd Battalion and 12th Squadron have deployed and are ready for combat deployment.

Aursi was supposed to be supporing Taegivistan, however this was a plan to hit them while they didn't expect. Aursi had left from Aursi at 1700 Hours and were supposed to be reaching Malkaestani water by 1900 Hours. Aursi quickly started preparing ASMs to bring the TAegivistani ships down. Aursian intelligence were trying to track Taegivistani ships with radars. Aursian professional hackers started trying to take control of Taugivitistani military and political servers to get alerted for their next actions.

SIC:

Aursi starts to have Backroom Discussions with Sultanate of Taugivitistan to merge with the Malkaestani government and fight against PR Taugivitistan.

The peacekeepers answer to the local government with a usual mixture of cultural superiority and “savage-calling”, stating that their presence there is not to be dictated by any local powers, for their reasoning is beyond something as simple and feeble as imperialism. Lakan peacekeepers carry on delivering the necessities to locals as well as establishing firebases whenever necessary- for now, the purpose of these firebases is to serve as protection for many humanitarian assets brought into the region, which may require defense against potential marauding or attacks by either of the sides of the conflict, such as hospitals (a certain side may be unpleasant with said hospitals treating their wounded enemies, also drugs), humanitarian aid stockpiles (they could be very useful for the war effort, also drugs), etc. Although the sheer image of a Red Cross-protected hospital being guarded by a couple of MBT’s or even HT’s would seem rather ironic, Lakans see no absurdity there- sometimes peace has to be indeed brought through superior firepower

UNCERTAINTY IN MALKAESTAN

According to the Office of Foreign Relations, following the announcement of a peacekeeping and aid operation in the contested Taugvitistan region of the Republic of Malkaestan several tariffs have been announced by the embattled republic. Though no comment on USSK peacekeeping efforts has been forthcoming, Malkaestan announced tariffs on USSK products, however, no further specifics have been announced. The Office of Foreign Relations has stated that with no products or services were actually named in the Malkaestani announcement, leading to the suspicion that the announcement was a feeble attempt at intimidating the USSK.

In response to this erratic and confusing announcement the Department of Defence has mobilized the 1st Independent Brigade for immediate deployment should the situation escalate. In spite of the confusion, the deployment of peacekeeping forces is still proceeding according to plan as it is now clear the Malkaestani regime is unpredictable at best, hostile at worst.

The airfield was a disappointment, but all of Colonel Sarah Weather's troops were on the ground. The landing had gone well other then the second IL-76 in the airlift operation had lost control and slid off the end of the dirt airstrip and now lay at a awkward angle. The crew and passengers had escaped with minor injuries and the rest of the operation had gone exactly to plan, if the Malkaestanis had any objections, they had been too busy with the battle in the distance to raise them.

The rumble of distant artillery was suddenly drowned out by several loud thumps as engineers used cratering charges to excavate fighting positions to be used for defence if anything went wrong. They were having issues getting in touch with the Taugvitis but with the battle in the distance it wasn't surprising. Colonel Weathers looked over the airfield as mechanics were tuning up the battalion's helicopters, at dawn, she would send out a pair of medivac birds, Mi-2s, painted white with red crosses, to the front lines. Ideally they would be able to get through to the 4th Royal Armoured Brigade of Laka Strolistandiler, apparently they were operating a field hospital in the area, without the USSK 2nd Birgade's medical assets they would need the peacekeeper's help if things got ugly...

Meanwhile, all they could do was dig in, try and get in touch with other forces in the area and have the airstrip ready for the second wave of transports with the rest of their ammunition and supplies in the morning.

Aursi was supposed to be supporing Taegivistan, however this was a plan to hit them while they didn't expect. Aursi had left from Aursi at 1700 Hours and were supposed to be reaching Malkaestani water by 1900 Hours. Aursi quickly started preparing ASMs to bring the TAegivistani ships down. Aursian intelligence were trying to track Taegivistani ships with radars. Due to negotiations having started, the Marajarbian Construction and Shipping Group arrives via the air from the colony of Mystery Realms to set up operations. Alongside various hires from a portion of the world, including Namaprikans and Mystery Realmsians, the Marajarbian Construction and Shipping Group started a program to hire more employees from the local population of Malkaestan to help work on a variety of infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, in the north, an offensive is finally launched, though poison gas is not deployed as Malkaestan had originally intended, due to the trade deal with Rhinocera including a guarantee of no war crimes.
