Which of the Balkan countries do you like the most?

Postby Inner Albania » Tue Aug 16, 2022 10:18 am

Post a reply below on which of the Balkan countries do you like the most? I'm sorry if someone already did it.

I would choose Albania, because they seem to have a nice culture, a very hard language & nice beaches.

EDIT: I see a lot of people asking to add this or that. I can't add all Balkan countries, as NationStates polls can only have max. 10 options, and there are more than 10 Balkan countries.

Been visiting and working in Serbia for over a decade now—gotta like that one the most ^__^ It's the most melancholic place I've ever been to, yet hopeful. It's like the RL version of the 2019 game "Disco Elysium". Belgrade in particular.

I've also seen Bosnia (second place in my book—simple in a good way, kind of like a time capsule of a country), Montenegro, and Croatia (In the same basket for me; both people are obnoxious in their own way, and both countries are boring sea resorts for younger tourists looking for fun on the cheap and families with children; way overrated. Except Zagreb, which was nice but reminds me of a million other mid-size central European cities), and Slovenia (Like Austria. Not the cheaper version of Austria. It's like Austria. The nonviennese part of it. My impression at least).

I did visit Romania (Timisoara only), North Macedonia (Ohrid only), and Bulgaria (Sofia only), but those were just one or two day visits, mostly work-related, so not enough to form an opinion. I liked Timisoara, but my colleagues there mentioned the rest of Romania is nothing like it. Ohrid was nice—and a bit odd, since it's next to a lake, but looks Mediterranean. Never had the opportunity to study the local architecture properly, but it looked like a mix of Greek, Turkish, and Yugoslav influences. And Sofia was literally just an afternoon, so it barely counts.

I've never been to Albania. And why isn't Greece listed in the poll? I'd also add Turkey :) Been to both, liked Greeks a little both more than the Turks, but I liked Turkey a little bit more than Greece, so they even out.

Hiking in Crna Gora is nice, but I have otherwise spent very little time in the Balkans

I absolutely love Romania. A wide variety of landscapes (deep forested areas to the North, the Donau delta, the Carpathian mountains, the coastline in the southeast ...) and the food is pretty amazing too. I'll never forget the time my friends and I were driving late in the evening in the middle of nowhere and stopped at a small shop to ask for directions. The man prepared a plate of locally-sourced meat, cheese and bread and called a friend of his who owned a small lodge nearby. He was so hospitable and kind.

Greece: Has a great history. Macedonia is Greek.

Since Greece isn’t in on the list I choose

Bosnia and Herzegovina: They were treated poorly under the Serbs so I have sympathy for them
