Gratuity & Tipping in YN

Postby DiaperLand » Tue Aug 09, 2022 1:55 pm

In some countries it is customary to leave a tip (donation of money) to service workers, as a way to show appreciation for their work. An example of this is the United States, where leaving gratuity at restaurants is commonly viewed as a must, and failure to tip after a satisfactory meal is a rude gesture. But in some countries tipping is not a part of their culture, and to some people it might seem as strange or even rude to give them un-requested money.

Does your nation have a tipping culture? If yes, what is customary? If no, why is that, or how is tipping viewed by your citizens?

In the nation of DiaperLand gratuity is seen as a positive gesture, and it is common for people to leave a tip after receiving satisfactory service. Many people agree that leaving 15-20 percent of their restaurant bill in tip money is acceptable. It is also common for delivery drivers, bar staff and other service staff to receive tips. Refusing to leave a tip for service workers can be seen as very rude when their work was satisfactory, and citizens insist that visitors to our nation observe the tipping tradition.

Does your nation have a tipping culture?
Yes. Most residents tend to tip their favourite dining places with 100 (or more) guildermarks, as it shows a sign of gratitude to keep their favourite business running.

Rhodevus does not have a tipping culture. Generally, people only tip up to 5%, unless the service was particularly good. This is mainly because of strong service sector laws, which mandate that wait-staff be paid at least minimum wage, with benefits.

Tipping culture does not exist in Gandoor and the act of tipping service workers is considered insulting in our nation.

Tipping doesn't exist in Tangatarehua, and can sometimes be seen as insulting. Giving money to a waiter implies that you see them as a charity case, or as being the social equivalent of a street beggar.

Tangatarehua has stringent wage laws that ensure service staff are adequately remunerated and such considerations are built into the price of the meal.

Tipping is absolutely unheard of in Radiatia.

At best if you tip someone they'll assume you need help counting your money; at worst you'll be labelled "inefficient" (a harsh insult in Radiatia) and possibly even banned from the establishment for holding things up.

Radiatians find it frustrating enough when foreigners pay for things using cash at all, it's considered even worse when they give you the wrong amount of cash and so for a foreigner to then claim they deliberately gave you an incorrect sum of money would be frustrating to the point of being insulting.

Since employers pay their employees fair wages in Yannia, tipping is not required, although it is expected. Tipping usually takes the form of rounding up the bill to the next round number as a token of appreciation. Withholding a tip, or tipping less than expected is seen as a punishment for bad product or service, while excessive tipping is seen as being extra appreciative.
However, it is illegal to tip government workers, especially police officers, which will be seen as attempting to bribe them. Besides police officers, this category includes firefighters, EMS and hospital personnel, and bus, tram, train, and taxi drivers, and others.

Tipping is not seen as customary in Yokashai Israel as people in service already make enough without tips but it won't be turned down if offered. You'll see more tipping in the north and around our capital of Ulster.

There is no tipping culture in the United Realms due to its wage laws. However, it has become more popular within the capital city of Antüria due to the high influx of tourists.

Does your nation have a tipping culture? Yes.
If yes, what is customary? 5 - 15% of total value of service or product purchased.
If no, why is that, or how is tipping viewed by your citizens?
-
Service workers are paid the city-wide mandated NSD 15,00 / NUV 63,75 hourly minimum wage. They also receive tips for their service, which ranges around 5-15% of the transaction's net price. Service workers have to pay 5% of their monthly tip income as tax.

The customers of the Entity are allowed to tip any amount they want. The social rules of the city dictate that one tips 5-15% if the service is above the minimum. It is not expected to tip service workers for merely working.

Workers in government service are prohibited from accepting tips or any other gratuities while working or in office. Accepting such is a criminal offence: qualified bribery, which carries a penalty of six months in prison and blacklisting from government work.

Tipping in Aikoland is neither required nor expected, as waiters and servers are paid living wages in our nation. It is not considered rude to tip, although it should only offered if the customer has received outstanding service. If one decides to tip, it is customary to simply round up to the nearest franc for smaller bills and tip 5% on larger bills. Tips greater than 5% are considered unusual.

As an East Asian culture close to neighboring Japan, in Starkindler, tipping is caused an insult of the person serving you, and their boss since to them it means they are paid so little to depend on alms by others. The people who depend on tips in other countries are usually paid decent wages in stead. This could be seen in the higher food, beverage, and service costs compared to other countries running a tip economy.

The Walnajamu do practice a 'rounding up' tip system, as most Walnajamu carry cash. Most Walnajamu would accept 'extra' money given to them. However, as most restaurants are family, communally, or state-owned, tips typically go to a 'pot' at the end of the shift that is distributed to the staff at the end of the week. 'Tipped' staff are not legally allowed to be paid less. Most citizens see tipping as either a convenient way to not have loose change, or as a somewhat obnoxious way to get more money out of customers. However, it is not considered a big issue.

Tipping is a somewhat complicated subject in Terrapacis.

As a general rule, there is no expectation of giving or receiving tips and Terrapacisians typically do not leave tips unless they have received exemplary service.

However because of our nation's location in the Atlantic Ocean, we get many tourists from the United States and they tend to leave tips for any service they receive that is tipped in their country. Terrapacisians do not take offense to Americans (and, to a lesser extent, Canadians) leaving tips when eating at a restaurant, however the custom is to pool these tips together and distribute them evenly among the workers at the end of the business day.

The waiters are very rarely tipped because they are usually paid very well. However, if it happens (most of the time is done by the tourists), it's absolutely not interpreted as an offensive gesture but as a "thanks for the service".
