1 weird trick to fix america ( congress hates it )!

Postby Based Illinois » Sat Aug 06, 2022 7:10 am

I'm sure that all of you losers have written up a manifesto at some point about how if you were made the supreme leader of the United States you would lead us all into utopia, but take a step back for a moment. If you could only make one change to do as much good as possible in improving the United States, what would it be?

Me: I would dispense with the idea of universal sufferage in exchange for an elite meritocratic enfranchisement ( The Star Ship Trooper option )

I would want the right to run for office and to vote to be a privelege one must earn through selfless dedicated service to the commonwealth: being a soldier for so many years, a teacher, an EMS responder, somebody whose done a bunch of community serivce, adopting children. Pretty much, if you want the right to wield legal political power, you'd have to first prove your dedication to the collective well being through a lot of labor which won't make you rich.

Could journalists possibly be able to run? Providing the public with vital information and occasionally risking their own safety to do so I think is worthy.

I would say no.

I get what you're going for, in that journalists provide a much needed service by keeping the public up to date on current events. It definetly is a vital service. With the advent of modern journalism and it's proclivity towards sensationalism and profit from panic and or outrage, however, the modern take on the profession seems a far cry from the selfless and unbiased ideals professed from men like Walter Cronkite.

Until the entire journalist industry did some serious soul searching and reformed the profit and fame motive out of their professional pictures, I would say no.

Idk man, I would want voting to be the culmination of selfless works and dedication - but a lot of contemporary journalism seems completely self serving, or intentionally devised so as to sew division.

What are you, a bug lover?

I did dig the movie, but i'm more on board with Heinlein's original book idea. I don't think the terran federation could have been considered fascist, though it definetly was both statist and collectivist.

Bugs are, in fact, cool.

Heinlein wrote cringe and was correctly mocked in the movie.

Eradicate lobbying. That would at least assist the populace in promoting more law and legislation that truly benefits all, not just the 1%.

I'm an EMS provider and believe me you don't want any of the people I work with running for office.
