Valanora Information
The most important thing to know about traveling through Valanora is that automobiles are banned except for government officials. A high tech railway system connects the entirety of the nation, with three most popular international airports in Raynor City, Gladerial, and Baysleef. A ferry from Rinaldi travels to and from the island of Capri every hour on the hour. The most distinguishing feature of Valanora is the prevalent amount of forests standing in many of the inner half of the nation, even in cities, with the elven attempts to live in harmony with nature. Vanorians are a polite if not a bit high on themselves, believing elvenkind to be superior to humans, though they show a respect for the potential their humanoid cousins have.

ABOUT FARFADILLIS
potentially outdated map for reference

A nation is usually defined as “a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory.” A country is usually defined as “a nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory.” As such, contrary to popular misconception, Farfadillis is neither a country nor a nation. The reasons are twofold: first, to what extent governments exist in Farfadillis in the current day is a matter of fierce scholarly debate, and second, there are various ethnicities in Farfadillis that appear to have diverged culturally centuries ago, although it is impossible to know for sure because historical records are very hard to come by in Farfadillis.

So, having clarified what Farfadillis is not, it would be perhaps helpful to give information about what it is. Again, academics haven't ironed out the details and reached a consensus, but it is generally agreed that somewhere between eight and fifteen ethnostates, depending on who's counting and how, coexist on the island of Farfadillis, with the most cited figure being nine. We will henceforth assume that this last figure is, indeed, correct. As such, Farfadillis could be considered a “Plurinational Entity” in the literal sense that, whatever it is, it is definitely an entity, and it certainly has more than one nation in it. For simplicity, when we say Farf we will mean any ethnicity from the island of Farfadillis.

Although members of any given Farf ethnicity would spit on you for even implying they are similar to any other given Farf ethnicity, the reality is that all but one Farf ethnicity share a lot of cultural common ground. In fact, their cultural common ground is particularly distinctive and makes it hard for Farf refugees to set each other apart in other countries, where their differences between this common ground and the local culture tend to be far starker. This cultural common ground includes, but is not limited to: a general disregard for authority and order (in any sense of the word), a seemingly unhealthy obsession with fire (although some of it is down to fire being a very important part of the various Farf religions), recklessness (risk-taking behavior, if you want to be more charitable), and a very inconvenient ability for distraction.

The various Farf ethnicities do differ considerably, however, and this is reflected in the ongoing border friction between the various ethnostates. This is despite the fact that, ironically, Farves display omniglottery: the ability to learn any language to a native level with minimal exposition. They are not psychics, so can't just know what words mean without having heard them, but they can visit another country and talk like a native within a month if they want to. Most older Farves speak their local language, as well as Ferdullaelan, because in the past Farfadillis was a country, and Ferdullaele, as the capital, was a cultural hegemon. Farves who live on the border between two given ethnostates generally speak both languages, in many cases having picked up the other language passively and unintentionally. This heavily facilitates migration between ethnostates, as neighboring ethnicities are generally not too different-looking, and as such a Farf from any given ethnicity could cross a border and pretend to have always been a member of the other side's ethnicity. This has the interesting consequence of making the borders between ethnostates cultural melting pots, mish-mashing the cultures of both ethnicities far more than outside Farfadillis.

Regarding the nine ethnostates we have been referring to, here we present brief descriptions of those generally agreed to be “the” nine ethnostates, in alphabetical order:

Farolera is a very populous country, and is the most economically powerful nowadays, as their capacity for self-sustenance during the anarchy years was far greater than their traditional competition, the Ferdullaelans. Their territory is filled with lush forests and fertile farmland, which is actually an important part of the Faroleran identity. After Karinthians, Farolerans are generally considered to be the least Farf of the big Farf ethnicities, but they nonetheless display all of the aforementioned cultural common ground to a very noticeable degree. Farolerans speak Faroleran, which to many foreigners sounds remarkably similar to Spanish.

Ferdullaele is the ethnostate with the most fertile land, which historically gave them an enormous headstart. However, their population was the one that failed the most to adapt to the total collapse of society eighteen years ago, and as such the ethnostate is, forgive us for making things even more complicated, not strictly an ethnostate: order (in the loosest sense), hasn't quite returned to Ferdullaele; it has instead devolved into various subcommunities exercising what would best be described as anarcho-capitalism and they, of course, hate each other.

Fröndt is a very mountainous region, and most urban centers are in those mountains. The weather is extremely dry and cold, and the fauna is unforgiving. The Fröndti are typically more hard-working and level-headed than other Farves—or so they like to believe—and think of themselves as the reasonable, neutral people of the island. The rest of the island disagrees, as do most scholars. The rest of the island disagrees. They've had trouble with the extremely harsh winters and the flying jellyfish lately, but they're a resilient bunch, so they've adapted to the times.

Induja lies at the center of Farfadillis. All of the beautiful Farf biomes clash in Induja, which makes it the most naturally beautiful of the ethnostates. By driving less than two hundred kilometers, you can go from jungle to desert to plains to mountains. Due to this, Indujans are actually quite secluded, despite bordering a whopping six other ethnicities. Indujans are traditionally... well, forgotten. To most Farves, they're just that place you have to go through to reach other places, though this attitude towards them has been relenting in recent years.

Karinthia is a recently-discovered tribe of about thirty thousand people who live in the Szoirsian desert. Some scientists believe they'd flown under the radar for millennia, somehow. They seem to speak a language with no similarities with any other Farf language. The Farves that have come into contact with them have found them very bizarre, for the most part because they seemed to pay attention to detail and have a commendable work ethic, coupled with a fleshed-out concept of respect and hierarchy. One thing about them is shared with all other ethnicities, however: they venerate fire.

Kruviš is the most populated ethnostate, though only by a slight margin and only if you're willing to trust a Farf census from twenty-five years ago. This nation is mostly one huge jungle, but closer to the coast the jungle gives way to civilization... to a degree. The fauna here is perhaps the most dangerous you'll find on the island, which is really saying something. Wasps that explode (like bombs) when stinging, spider-snakes, frogs whose poison literally sends you to hell, etc. The Kruviši are even more fiercely nationalistic than the other ethnicities but tend to direct their xenophobia more towards non-Farves than the other Farves.

Rülândéá is historically the poorest and most abused of the nations; it's safe to say the Rulandese have never had it good. Rampant crime, extreme pollution, terrible quality of life, genocide and a very long etc. The region weathered the days of anarchy much better than most other places by virtue of already being used to misery. Nowadays, the region is controlled by the Rulandese Revolutionary Army, and a fairly idiosyncratic version of libertarian socialism is currently being put in place, but it is very hard to get information from Rülândéá due to how hazardous it is to get there in the first place. They're the most well-known Farf ethnicity by far because they produce better footballers than the rest of the island combined, to the point that some of the best players in the Multiverse come from this relatively small, run-down nation. Their language is also notorious for having too many diacritics. Farves from the other ethnicities feel very insulted when it is insinuated that they, too, speak languages with an orthography filled to the brim with diacritics.

Szoirsia is essentially one huge desert with small oases of civilization. Szoirsians are used to the extreme heat and dehydration that comes with their surroundings. They resort to violence first and foremost to solve problems, perhaps even more so than the Rulandese. Szoirsians speak one of the most distinct languages of the island: Szoirsian. As a language, it seems to very transparently be a creole between two ancestral languages that no longer exist, which in turn—along with what little archaeological evidence can be found—makes the scholarly consensus be that there used to be two distinct ethnic groups in Szoirsia that, somehow, fused into one.

Tanazza is rather uninhabited, being almost exactly fifty percent jungle, fifty percent desert in terms of surface area. The inhabited parts generally lie at the edge of both biomes. Tanazzans have a notoriously hard time getting out of Tanazza because there are no roads out. The collapse of supply chains during the anarchy years hit the Tanazzans particularly hard as a result, and they are still reeling from it. They are, nonetheless, very resilient and, supposedly, very good-humored.

As a general rule, it is very hard to travel to Farfadillis. Things have gotten better recently, as some working airports have been constructed in Farolera by the Banijan and Euran relief efforts. However, travel within the country is still notoriously hazardous unless you're willing to spend a lot of money bribing the locals.

We remark again that the fauna that has developed over millions of years inside the island is very much unlike outside it, even outside Kruviš. If you hear about “radiation-eating snakes”, don't laugh: you'll look like an idiot. Imagine how you'd think of someone who laughed at someone believing in the existence of regular snakes. We must also emphasize that one must be especially wary of the frogs whose poison literally sends you to hell.

Fittingly, Farf football is obsessed with reckless attacking; Farf crowds will often get bored if your team is defensive, so expect aggressiveness from some of them if your team is boring. If your team is entertaining, however, expect the Farf crowd to cheer you on.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your stay, however brief it might turn out to be.

VENUES

La Fantás
Location: Ferdullaele
Capacity: 70,000
Fresh off passing a routine safety inspection that was three decades overdue because of an FFFF oversight, La Fantás was once again la Vherderoja's home stadium for cycle 90. The colossal stadium is situated in the ex-capital of what used to be the country of Farfadillis: Ferdullaele. It used to have a whopping hundred thousand seats, but ever since the whole anarchy thing, the northeastern stand has been inexplicably on fire, so that's one-fourth of the seats gone, plus those too close to the fire to be considered safe by Farf standards. And yes, those exist. Nobody can quite explain how the stand has managed to continue burning for about eighteen years. Pagan religions are common in Farfadillis, and they mostly venerate fire, so if you ask around you'll likely get some magical explanations. We are not saying the God of Fire is raining its wrath upon Ferdullaele, but we are saying that stand should've stopped burning long ago. Or, at least, the fire should've propagated to the other stands. We are also saying that if La Fantás were a map of Farfadillis, it would be Ferdullaele that is burning, being the most northeastern ethnostate. Again, speculation, but worth pointing out. We've gone on a tangent now. Anyway, huge stadium, fire, don't get burned, don't involve yourself with the surrounding ethnic tension.

La Snerra
Location: Ferdullaele
Capacity: 100,000
La Snerra was the national team's home in the early days, but got promptly abandoned when the much more modern La Fantás was built. Nonetheless, stadia are in short supply in Farfadillis nowadays, so the heretofore abandoned stadium will be making a comeback around forty years since it was last used... is what we were saying back when we hosted World Cup 85. The stadium has not been used since, however, and it's been over a decade so it's almost the same thing. Yes, it may be rusty and unsafe, but at least it's not on fire, and it can fit in a lot of people. As far as seats go, however, there are only enough for about 20,000 people, which could prove problematic.

Den Mytologiska Maneter
Location: Fröndt
Capacity: 50,000
One of the few stadia left relatively intact by the chaos. It's in the freezing mountains of Fröndt. Temperatures swing wildly between 5ºC and -25ºC there throughout the day, and the surrounding area is infested with flying jellyfish, or flygande maneter, as the locals call them. Literal jellyfish with what are essentially angel wings. Most of them are not lethal, however, and the ones that are make it very obvious by pulsating with different, bright and saturated colors. Except for the ones that don't and are indistinguishable from the non-lethal ones. They've been a bit a plague since, you know, the events we will be continuously referencing throughout this pamphlet. Anyway, wear a scarf and lots of anti-flying-jellyfish repellent and you'll probably be alright.

Adar Jak
Location: Szoirsia
Capacity: 32,000
While no longer the only stadium in Szoirsia, the Adar Jak will still be used because of tradition. It's a stadium situated in the most notoriously unforgiving part of the Szoirsian desert, a part which is home to precisely no living creatures besides radiation-eating snakes. Bring loads of water, because the Szoirsians won't be sharing theirs (it's kinda scarce at the moment, okay?). On a particularly hot day, matches scheduled here will have to be moved to some nearby (or not) stadium. Do not bring a Geiger counter.

Grand René Skaé
Location: Szoirsia
Capacity: 25,000
Home to René Skaé, one of the best Farf teams nowadays, and named after René Skaé the person, this stadium is located in René Skaé, the city named after the person. Nobody is quite sure who René Skaé really was, but the fact that so many things in this area have been named after him seems to suggest that he was some kind of hero. In comparison with Adar Jak, Grand René Skaé is a forgiving stadium, but don't get us wrong: you really will not enjoy a game here on a hot day, of which there are many.

La Gran Avenida
Location: Farolera
Capacity: 60,000
This stadium is home to Avenida Victoria, Avenida Principal and La Nueva Avenida, three historically big Farf teams. It is situated in the middle of a forest. The view from the highest seats is impressive. Please, ignore how dangerous the path to the stadium is, and how long it takes to arrive there, considering going by car is banned. Beware the beasts of the forest. If you ignore the inherent danger, La Gran Avenida is probably tied with La Fantás for both most modern and most visually captivating stadium.

Ojo de la Tormenta
Location: Farolera
Capacity: 15,000
This small stadium located in Azureña, a town on the coast of Puerto Farolero, is notable for constantly (say, weekly, but usually more often) attracting fantastically violent, highly concentrated storms, while somehow managing to stay inside the eye of the storm, completely unaffected. Azureña is otherwise a very nice seaside resort. Sans the storms.

Rülândéá Çölíséá
Location: Rülândéá
Capacity: 35,000
The Çölíséá (Colosseum in Rulandese) is iconic for being home to rivals Mâ Âlâmëómë and Dí Maozöxê, and for having halved its capacity due to bombings from the then-existent government. The stadium's situated in a particularly rough area of Rülândéá, so make sure to be extra careful. The stadium itself is actually quite modern, as both Mâ Âlâmëómë and Dí Maozöxê are relatively well-off clubs, but if you squint your eyes you can sort of discern that it's been bombed multiple times. The big hole in the northern stand is a bit of a tell.

Bojno Polje
Location: Fröndt
Capacity: 40,000
It stands to reason that the most populated nation on the island would have one of the biggest stadia, despite having a pretty middling footballing tradition (not for lack of trying, mind). For a 40,000 seater, Bojno Polje is patently unsafe and ugly. Scotch tape is not what is holding it together, but the fact that that's the best we can say is, well, all that should be said.

Woodson becomes the backup while Paolo Gomes is recovering from a torn ACL. He has a decent mix of size and agility.

King plays as a defensive-oriented fullback, often marking the opposing team's top striker. He relies more on positioning and reading his opponent's tendencies and body language to figure out where to run than on speed. He's not exactly a burner.
5 Tommy Benignati, 32, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds (Wilmington FC)
The older brother of Marco Beningnati, Tommy plays a much more rugged style than Marco does. Can play sweeper in a three-back lineup.

Taylor's speed lends itself to being a fullback, but he plays halfback for the Browns. He has a tendency to struggle with more physical forwards and offensive midfielders.

The younger twin brother of Under 21 national team player Carlette Taylor, John plays a similar style to his sister's, although with much more speed.

In his first season as team captain of the Renegades, he led the team to a Sarzonian Football Confederation championship, resulting in the team's promotion to the Cyanea League. If he's on the pitch in the event Howard gets subbed for, he will don the captain's armband. He is a reserve halfback for the Stars.
22 Carmela Bowen, 30, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, Woodstock Justice
Brown plays fullback for the Justice, a Sarzonian women's football team, and typically marks whomever the playmaking midfielder is. Her stamina earned her a spot on the national team.

Meyers won a lawsuit against the Portland Timbers third division affiliate when the team dismissed them after successfully proving the club released them due to their gender non-conforming status

Mabree has one of the better left-booted shots in the Sarzonian league structure and is one of the fastest players in Sarzonia. He'll play an important role in Sarzonia's offence.

A grandson of legendary Stars forward Brian Wilson and great-grandson of coach Dave Wilson, Clayton is not just a fourth generation star among the Stars, he served as the playmaker for the Under 21 Stars and is a sterling wing player on the Wild.
18 Carlos dos Santos, 27, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Woodstock Wild)
A right wing player, he will sometimes be called upon to take free kicks if Reynolds is unable to for some reason.
23 Jaxon Hennepin, 28, 5-foot-7, 155 pounds (Wilmington FC)
Hennepin earned a starting role as a playmaking midfielder for WIlmington, but also played half a season in defensive midfield when the team was beset with injuries.
30 Erik Swann, 25, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Portland Timbers)
Swann's strength is being a late-match offensive substitute who can score in a pinch.
14 Winnie Taunton, 27, 5-foot-9, 150 pounds
Taunton takes a majority of the penalties on the women's national team and produces blinding speed on the wings.

21 Jake Campos, 23 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, (Portland Timbers)
Campos is a straight up target player in the front line. His leaping ability makes him a prime candidate for headers in the box off corner kicks and indirect free kicks. He played on the Junior Stars team that competed in the most recent AOCAF.
19 Holly Cambrio, 28, 5-foot-7, 145 pounds (Woodstock Justice)
Cambrio adds flair and ball movement skill and the ability to serve as a sparkplug off the bench, but would be a starter for a women's national team if that competition got resurrected.
41 Carly Wilcox, 22, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Woodstock Wild reserves)
Wilcox retained her place on the Wild's reserve squad and made eight appearances and six starts after her transition.

By all accounts, Brady Reynolds had a successful first full go as Sarzonian national team manager.

The Stars qualified for the knockouts in the 83rd Cup of Harmony and defeated Kelssek in the Round of 32, only to fall 1-0 to Cassadaigua in the Round of 16. Along the way, Reynolds had a lot to be proud of, including his team's 3-2 victory over the Fillies during the group stage.

For his part, Reynolds quipped that his team's participation in the 67th AOCAF would be easier.

"We're not playing Cassadaigua again," he said. "We hadn't faced them much in football over the years but we ended up playing them four times in the last World Cup cycle. They say familiarity breeds contempt; well, we were very familiar with them after the last World Cup cycle." Cassadaigua is in Rushmore, and Reynolds said, "they can stay there as far as we're concerned."

Carlton Sandt will once again assume the starting role as goalkeeper with Trent Woodson backing him up. Paolo Gomes has retired from international football after coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Gomes said through a translator that his first goal would be to finish learning English.

"I had a difficult time balancing first football, then rehab and learning English," he said. "Now that I'm no longer training to play football and I've pretty well recovered from my injury, I can focus on English classes." Gomes said he would miss the camaraderie with the team and the thrill of competing at the highest level of football. As for the rest of the team, they've been learning a new (old) system now that Reynolds has had an opportunity to implement it.

"We're going back to Sarzonian football," Reynolds said. "We're still looking to have a fluid, passing-oriented attacking system, but we're also going to put greater emphasis on defence." When asked if he was bringing back so-called "total football on steriods," Reynolds smiled and said, "I'll let our play be the judge of that." The Stars open AOCAF play with a match against Al-Tamazgha before matches against Hapilooper and Ft. McKinley, which Reynolds has said will give his team an opportunity to put the new (old) system to the test.

"We've got a lot to prove to ourselves, to Brady, and to the rest of the footballing world," midfielder and captain Clayton Wilson said. "Our journey starts right here, right now."

16- TERCAR Shuajo

Tercar Shuajo, who signed a four-year contract with Mando FC after graduating from Northern University, has added 8kg to his frame in muscle, yet still retains his speed. A very quick and agile defender, Tercar uses his feet and agility to outmaneuver most other players instead of relying on sheer mass to take away a ball, a tactic he learned from pairing with Itawaku during exhibition games prior to World Cup 86.

Now into his fourth campaign as starting defender, Tercar is looking to further cement himself into the team. With both Hashimoto Isamiru and Somchai Kikwan both growing older with every passing game, soon it may be time for Tercar to take his speed and agility to the centre of the pitch. Tercar bares the distinction of being one of only two players to score a goal during the last AOCAF – the lone goal against Vilita & Turori on the opening day of the tournament.

Unfortunately for Tercar, an upper body strain took him out of World Cup XC for four games, as well as the four games of AOCAF 66. He did not play in World Cup XCI, and given the average performance of the defence during, it is expected that Tercar may earn his century during this tournament, though he has not yet been announced as a starter.

Formerly the backup to the Beast of the North, Pam Kai spent five tournaments in the shadow of Itawaku, hoping to one day earn the starting spot from him or to replace him. However, at the tryout camp, it was Tercar Shuajo who shined, and received the Starting Spike from Tay’haai. Following another lackluster season in Senlin, Pam has shown himself to be a perennial backup defender; though this time, he has been kicked out of the limelight by a former classmate and teammate of his from Northern University… One has to wonder how that will play out during the tournament.

26 – Khánh KA’LOMI
Height: 190cm - Weight: 94kg – Age: 25 years old - Team: Island FC

A young Southern Watertribesman who signed a professional contract with Island FC at just 20-years-of-age, Khánh Ka’lomi is already making waves in the Avatarian sports community. With an impressive size for such a young player, many see him as the next Itawaku, and some have already started calling him “The Beast of the South”. In his first season at Island FC, Ka’lomi put up impressive numbers for a defencemen; ending his season with the highest involvement in goals by a defender with 2 goal and 7 assists to go with 6 clean sheets.

In World Cup XC, an upper body strain for Tercar Shuajo would see Ka’lomi moved into the Starting XI, and given the performance of Tercar following that strain – as well as him sitting out the last two tournaments – it seems likely that Wong has decided to trust the youthful Watertribesman to fill in and to succeed Pam Kai on the left side.

Not sure how Pam is going to take this one…

Central Defenders
5- HASHIMOTO Isamiru
Height: 178cm - Weight: 75kg – Age: 38 years old - Team: Ba Sing Se UNITED

One of the most highly-rated player for the Bison defence, Hashimoto Isamiru, or “Hashi” as he is loving called by fans, has shown himself to be a very valuable asset to the team. A strong defensive player who often falls in to a full-back position, Hashimoto has made great strides in improving his passing and marking skills since he was traded to Ba Sing Se UNITED from Keldabe FC after a very disappointing season which saw Kelabe not advance to the playoffs for the first time in five years.

However, as time as worn on, so too as age on Hashimoto. Having turned 37 during the Cup of Harmony, many have been calling for Hashi to step down gracefully and retire. However, in previous interviews over the 2021.1 Campaign, Hashimoto has already said he would not even entertain retirement until he had earned his century-and-half cap for the National Team.

15- UTHAN A’den
Height: 185cm - Weight: 83kg – Age: 27 years old - Team:FC Beijing

A large and physically imposing player, Uthan A’den does not play a very physical game like Auranaq or Hashimoto, but instead proves himself to be one of the fastest players on the team; one who uses that speed to outpace and overtake many of his opponents. Less prove to tackle and trip, and more likely to simply run up from behind and steal the ball mid-dribble, expect to see Uthan engaging opponents closer to the net than you will be comfortable with from previous Bisons campaigns.

Having reached his century mark during the 6-2 win at home against The Juniper Union during World Cup 88 – and also scoring his first multiverse hat trick – Uthan became one of the youngest players to reach the milemark, following in the footsteps of Akiyama Qiangyu and Bralor Kotyc’e to reach a century before 25.

And given his presence, Uthan is expected to play for a very long time.

Though not as fast as Uthan, Ganham Ri’om is a full-back more focused on the offence, who uses his skill with the ball to often drive the offence from the backfield. Though Ganham can have some minor difficulties when tasked with defence (given that he played his entire career at Hatsu State as a offensive midfielder before switching to defence when drafted), he is a very dedicated player and works hard to improve where he knows there are weakness.

3- SOMCHAI Kikwan
Height: 187cm - Weight: 83kg – Age: 35 years old - Team: Itakawai City

While certainly not the oldest player in the defence, Somchai Kikwan does serve as the counterpoint to Uthan’s youthful excitement. Having graduated from Kyoshi State, Somchai is very familiar to the style of play Uthan is used to, and the two of them communicate very well on the side of the field. Very adept at playing the middle of the field, when pushed to the right side, Somchai is quick to adapt and has the endurance and stamina to keep up with the demands.

Having made his multiverse debut in World Cup 85, Somchai has continued to play through a nagging lower body injury up until World Cup 90; utlising traditional medicine as well as playing an on-off schedule which allowed Huang Aodhan and Taoru Adeen to garnish some of the limelight, Somchai has made a full return to the line-up, and will likely break the century-and-a-half mark during this campaign.

23- HUANG Aodhán

With Mi’rez Yiman retiring, Huang Aodhán would find himself moving up on the list of right defenders. Signed onto a Taap-A team right out of college, Huang was quick to mature and found his way onto the Makapu ERUPT three season ago. A quick study, he adapted well to his new team and soon made it to their starting eleven. Huang is a natural athlete, with impressive speed and stamina to match, and we can expect to see that natural athleticism on display as the tournament wears on and fatigue sets into the Starting Eleven.

15 – Tarou ADEEN

With the retirement of a couple of the Bisons’ core defenders, the Travelling Corps has produced another potential feature player in the form of Tarou Adeen. A product of both the Royal Fire Developmental Programs as well as serving under the tutelage of Fujimoto Zhong at Omashu State, Adeen is sure to see his number called in future tournaments, especially as players like Somchai continue to add years to their career. Though, unlike Somchai, Adeen brings more size to the right; standing at just under 190cm and weighs a little under 90kg. Combine that size with his speed and vision on the pitch, and you have a defender who can knock an opponent off course and redirect a ball to a forward without even lifting his head from his target. As with others in the lower levels of the team, expect to see Adeen as the tournament progresses.

The Travelling Corps for Defense is all small trio of defenders who are all potential future Bisons.

Kato Zhao Ling, who graduated from Enceri University and signed an entry-level two-year contract with FC She Pass, is coming off his first RPFL All-Star selection and a third-place finish in the 2021.1 Season, having been traded to Enceri FC before the end of his contract and signing on an entry-level single-year bridge pending the conclusion of the 2021.3 Season. Yamato Goro surprised the football world upon graduation, having signed with Ba Sing Se over Itakawai; Yamato is certainly being watched to replace either of the aging defencemen in Hashimoto and Somchai. Zhou Hiroto, who helped Kibago University win their third consecutive Earthen Shield tournament in five years, also is vying for an eventual spot on the national roster after signing an entry-level two-year contract with Concord Dusk AFC.

Defensive Midfielders:

7- TAKAHASHI Hikaru
Height: 178cm - Weight: 76kg – Age: 39 years old - Team: Northern AFC

A strong defensive midfielder. Takahashi Hikaru’s strength lies in his kicks; easily able to send a ball soaring across the pitch with surprising accuracy, Takahashi is known for feeding the ball to the strikers and catching many opposing defences off-guard. He often has great vision, and he is easily able to read the play and can adapt accordingly.

Now, Takahashi has to step into a new role, as the oldest player on the team. With the retirement of so many of his fellow over-30 players, some feel the pressure is on Takahashi to produce more in this upcoming World Cup Campaign… or hang up the Number Seven jersey for the last time. Though, given his performance during World Cup XC – including a pair of hat-tricks against Arujunngar and Omerica – it is likely Takahashi will dismiss all of his doubters and become the first player in the Modern Era to record a double century.

He’s a full four games ahead of Skirata, and six ahead of Ma…

6- MA Haijiang
Height: 187cm - Weight: 85kg – Age: 36 years old - Team: Northern AFC

Former Head Coach Tay’haai made the unusual selection of having both of his defensive midfielders come from the same team, for reasons most can ascertain…. And it’s a decision that Interim Head Coach Wong Haru A proven veteran on the pitch, Ma Haijiang complements Takahashi’s strong kicks and accuracy with the speed to overcome most opponents; if he can not strike a ball deep, Takahashi will often send a volley up to Ma who will then run it into the offensive zone before lasering the ball to an open forward. Expect to see either Ma or Takahashi in the assist column for plenty of goals.

Though, now with both players into their 30s, and many calling for younger blood to take the reigns, one has to wonder how much longer the ‘Northern Duo’ will continue to play together… or worse, who will be the first to retire…

17- YOSHIDA Arata
Height: 177cm - Weight: 80kg – Age: 32 years old - Team: Royal Flames

Yoshida Arata is a dedicated player who has worked incredibly hard to make his way to the national team; having spent several months training with one of the greatest Avatarian midfielders to ever play the game, Bralor Kotyc’e. Time spent with Bralor has proven to greatly improve his game, seeing Yoshida climb up the ranks during the Trials for the national team. Though he has predominantly been a backup for his entire career thirteen tournaments, Arata has managed to amass ninety-two caps, and given the length of the Cup of Harmony, expected to reach the century during it. The inly question will be whether he reaches that mark as a substitution or as a starter.

Though, Yoshida is not a player you will often notice. He is not one for showboating, and very rarely makes a goal or garnishes an assist. Instead, he focuses his time on the pitch by setting up the offense for a great pass, a decisive tackle that often swings the game’s momentum, or just being able to intercept the ball at the most opportune time. One of the best midfielders in the Southern Conference of the RPFL, Yoshida is sure to see time on the pitch by relieving Takahashi or Ma in the later games of the competition.

Neutral Midfielders:

18- HISAKAWA Si Woo
Height: 183cm - Weight: 84kg – Age: 34 years old - Team: Senlin Timbers

An extremely technical midfielder, Hisakawa Si Woo is not one to shy away from trying for goals. More adept at reading the play and setting up his forwards, Hisakawa is a bit more impatient than one would like, and he posseses the speed and agility to run through a good defence and find the back of the net on occasion. He is also the only player on the Bisons who is currently unsigned; his contract with the Taap-A team Omashu Athletic ended after AOCAF LX, and with nothing really to showcase his worth, Omashu Athletic chose to not sign Hisakawa; a fact that has certainly hurt his morale going into the last World Cup. However, an impressive showing, including four goals at WC 85, saw Hisakawa sign a two-year contract with the Senlin Timbers just days after the completion of the group stage.

Attacking Midfielders:

8- YU Shichiro

With a very offensive-minded footballing style, Yu Shichiro works as the last link between the midfield and the offence. Much like Hisakawa, Yu has been known to even advance from the midfield to score quite a few key goals in pivotal games, including the 2019.2 Ve’vut Cup winning goal against Concord Dusk AFC. He has a powerful long shot and is exceptional at heading, both of which are aided by his height. However, as skilled as he is in offense, Yu still prefers to pass the ball up to forwards for an assist in a goal as opposed to being the star player.

11- GUANYU Jun

A very creative midfielder, Guanyu Jun is very capable of making plays on the fly; with great vision and quick feet, he often can set up his forwards for a great goal or keep the ball moving through the middle. Though having graduated from Heibai University right after AOCAF 59, Guanyu was making his way into the Starting Eleven before being displaced by Yu Shichiro in WC 62. However, tenancity as always been one of Guanyu’s strength, and thanks to the offensively-minded playstyle employed by Head Coach Wong, Guanyu has easily solidified himself into the Starting Eleven; often pushing out of the midfield and into an extra attacker at times.

14 – Fei’kao SONG
Height: 185cm - Weight: 81kg – Age: 27 years old - Team: FC Mando

Relatively young when compared to his teammates, Fei’kao Song chose to forgo his collegiate career, getting drafted by FC Mando the day before his twentieth birthday. Despite all the fanfare of his first season behind him, Song has not had a promising start to his sophomore season. Given his still-developing skills in midfield, his is seen as a comparatively weak player and often spends more time with the coaching staff than other more-seasoned players. Song, much like Hisakawa, is a technical player by nature whose greatest asset is not in his aim or power, but in the art of dribbling which he uses at every opportunity. While more prone to provide assists on plays as opposed to goals, Song has proven himself through Trials to Tay’haai and earned a spot on the National Team, albeit a reserve position.

Mostly comprised of Water Tribesmen, the Midfield Travelling Corps is a grabbag of talent. From the University of the Northern Tribes come home-grown Inoue Anernerk, who at just like his father, the famed Inoue Kuruk, completed back-to-back double-digit scoring seasons in his last two seasons of college; impressive for a man who is supposed to be on the defensive midfield. From UST, Kal Itowa mirrors the success of Inoue, though a career less filled with goals and more with assists. Penlu Saito, a young player from the developmental Chomain State Academy, hopes to see a professional contract within the year, and with such a great season in the ADFL, you can be sure he will at least entertain some good offers. Out of the University of Kibago, Shao Mi’ka is a relatively quiet player who has had offers from both Gaoling Union and Senlin Timbers. Dik Up’lis rounds out the Travelling Corps, bringing from Omashu State a drive for excellence many teams would love to have, even if it comes with a bit more maturing to be fostered.

CORDIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

THE NORTH STARS

ALL-TIME RECORD: 33-14-26

The North Stars’ second cycle as part of the footballing world went far better than anyone expected. As many players hit and passed the 50-caps mark, the team put some impressive football out on the field, making it all the way to the World Cup Playoffs before falling to the eventual runners-up Turori, a result that, though disappointing, has no shame in it. The Cordians followed that up with an undefeated run through the Cup of Harmony group stage with three wins and three draws, and won their first knockout match as well, but predictably fell to Audioslavia in the second round, a rematch of a group stage matchup that saw much made in the Cordian media from a scoreless draw, leading to some hope that the feat could be repeated. It could not, though a 3-1 loss was still respectable considering that Audioslavia is, well, Audioslavia, and would go on to win the Cup of Harmony with three more victories.

The team is managed by Diandra Ballard of Nephara, a World Cup-winning keeper for the Nepharan national team and manager of Leichhardt, which she brought from the First Division to the Zenith, but was then fired when the team went back down. Spying a manager with international experience, the Cordian NT hired her. After a bit of a painful first cycle, Ballard led the NT through a very successful return that’s granted her quite a lot of positive sentiment in the Isles and secured her job for another few cycles at the very least. Ballard enters AOCAF 67 at the helm of a Cordian program whose star is rising at a rapid pace.

On the defensive side of the ball, Pratt is quick to challenge, but that tendency can leave his teammates ill-prepared if they haven’t gotten used to playing with him. Thankfully, most of the Cordian players are, having played a full cycle with him.

Overview

The Phoenixes enter this campaign with a new lease on life, stunning the world with a highly successful qualifying campaign culminating in a massive upset of Eura to make it back to the World Cup. The triumph wasn't mere luck, but a milestone in an unsteady but overall upward progression, and Delaclava hopes to build on that now rather than later.

Tactically, the Phoenixes are heavily offensive-minded, utilizing a 3-5-2 and relying on individual skill in the middle and up front. Goalkeepers and defenders are perfectly capable, but they're going to have to be ready to make plays and bail out failed attacks. There is a bias towards action and chance instead of possession, and an inclination towards taking defensive risks to generate counterattack opportunities, although these tendencies have been somewhat reined in by new manager Boris Ishutin. Additionally, it is expected that the midfielders will be fully active on both ends of the field, employing manpower to have advantages in both the offensive and defense zones rather than relying on positioning. Considered a "younger Nathan Ellis," Jerold Dickman has always been known for a bad attitude and an even worse style of play. Whether or not he has cleaned up his act, people still remember that night in Taeshan, during a Sporting World Cup match against Xanneria, when Dickman caused a massive bench-clearing brawl, getting himself kicked off the Under-18 team at the time. But he's these days a crucial part of the Team Hapilopper defense and has proudly spoken of his times "sitting under the learning tree" of Nathan Ellis. He says that has helped him grow into a good ballplayer, first and foremost.

Ellis suffered a catastrophic knee injury during Team Hapilopper's match with Ko-oren. Team Hapilopper has yet to remove him from the roster, but the expectation is that Nathan will announce his retirement as a player during the AOCAF, and will transition to a full-time coach during the roster. Ellis will not be traveling with the team to AOCAF 67, and will instead be rehabilitating his left knee at a hospital in Hapilopper City. His loss will be felt across Team Hapilopper.

The second woman to make it to a Hapilopper national football team, Ashley Stanford is not here to look pretty, nor is she here to make friends with anyone. She's here to kick some ass, and with Border City United two years ago, she did exactly that, famously breaking the collarbone of UHC striker Shelley Linwood with a cheap shot clothesline as he was on his way to bring a goal into the back of the net. And she didn't give two shits. When asked after the game if she had any remorse for breaking his collarbone, her response was simple: "I'm not paid to think about that. He shouldn't have come up to goal. My job is to stop him." With that kind of attitude, it's wondered if she'll take the Nate Ellis role after he retires from play, whenever that is.

With a name like "Maverick King," you probably have to think he got a lot of attention when he was in school. He probably heard it all the time from his classmates. "You're the Maverick King?" kids would ask. "You look like a fat chump to me!" All the jokes. All the nastiness. And Maverick King wanted to get past it. And then one day he snapped, body-slamming a bully to the ground. A teacher, concerned about what could happen, told Maverick to consider getting into soccer. And so he did, channeling his anger and frustration into soccer, being a better player, and getting in shape. He takes the heckling in stride and channels it to become a better footballer.

James Huddleston, known more as "Jimmy" these days, especially among his teammates, has developed himself into a prominent midfielder within the Hapiloppian system and with FC Buckridge. He can serve as a good dual threat either on offense or defense. But he's strangely known, more than anything else, for what he listens to in his spare time. You see, Huddleston is the son of Greg Huddleston, the long-time chief announcer for the HASCAR Radio Network, and Jimmy loves listening to old radio broadcasts of HASCAR and NSSCRA races. To each their own, I guess.

Want a good controversy with your morning coffee? How about Parker Mathis, the son of Hapiloppian President William Mathis, called up to a starting role on Team Hapilopper? It's one of the very, very few roster changes that Thom Perkins and his staff have made between the last AOCAF and this World Cup campaign. The move was spearheaded by player-coach Nathan Ellis, who insisted that Parker had shown him some things that other players hadn't, and that Parker had truly earned the spot. However, many wonder if this may have been a way to get William Mathis off their back after the Hapiloppian President protested his son playing elsewhere. We'll see if he truly earned his spot.

Herbert Northrop, one of many, many players from Hapilopper's infamous Sporting World Cup teams, is one of the most spiritual members of a Hapiloppian football team that has existed. A graduate of Southland Christian Academy in Buckridge, Northrop makes sure to say a prayer before he hits the pitch, and when he scores a goal, he drops to one knee and says a prayer to the Good Lord Above for allowing him to score a goal. You won't see Northrop pulling off cheap shots like Jerold Dickman, and you won't see him attempting to end someone's career (or life) like Nathan Ellis. That's not what he does. Instead, he tries to play as professionally as he can, as cleanly as he can, as effectively as he can. And his style is quite effective, leading the Hapiloppian League in midfielder goals last year with 12.

You know why coaches like Pete Robson so much? It's because he doesn't really care about the window dressing, the issues plaguing his teams or what's going on in sport in Surrey. He's even said that since it doesn't affect him, he doesn't worry about it. Instead, he goes out there, plays his role as forward very well - last year scoring 34 goals with FC Surrey - and then goes out and does his thing. And while he's a party animal - a member of the infamous Surrey party group "The Asskickers," he's not the kind of person to get in trouble with the law for something egregious. Sure, he was arrested a few weeks ago for vandalism after building a water slide in a hallway of a dormitory at Surrey Perimeter, but coaches don't mind that. He ain't hurting nobody.

The man in the Ernie Stevenson role, Toby Bryson has adapted to the position quite well. He doesn't pull off the "hop-skip-holy shit" goals that his predecessor was able to perform, but that's not what Toby does. He doesn't go for style points, he goes for goals, and that's that. While there had been pressure at the start of the run over concerns that Toby wouldn't be able to match up to Ernie Stevenson, many pitsiders have agreed that Toby is his own man and he'll still get those goals scored, just in his own specific way and in his own style. He doesn't need to be Ernie, he contends. He needs to be himself. Away from the pitch, Toby has gained positive attention for his work helping out in the soup kitchens in the southside of Hapilopper City.

He doesn't like talking to the media, doesn't like signing autographs, and doesn't like doing anything but bettering his game. He prides himself on scrapping for everything he's had. He'll spend all-nighters on the field at Conrad Saylor High School, his alma mater, practicing moves and shots. All he wants to do is become a regular starter on the national team squad.

On the other hand, Elias Moon is just happy to be here. Since barely making the SWC squad a few years ago, Moon has made a living on trying out as many trick shots on goal as he can. He wants to be just like Ernie Stevenson, although without the other parts of Ernie Stevenson. In other words, he's a trick-shot artist and that's it. His videos of trick shots have gone viral on social media, like, most recently, a goal scored from the back of a moving minivan circling around the pitch of Capital Stadium, a stunt that impressed both Hapiloppian fans and angered the Hapilopper National Baseball Team after it led to some damage to the artificial turf at the stadium. His skill has led him to be signed by Rammsissil, a Vilitan squad. It'll be interesting to see how Elias does elsewhere.

Perpetuating the unfortunate stereotype that Hapiloppians in general are fun-loving morons with no ability to see that what they're doing is, well, stupid, Kerry Spalding plays for Team Hapilopper when he's not making headlines for doing really stupid things, like running down a lane of a bowling alley and trying to score a strike from point blank range, or accidentally electrocuting himself after punching a bug zapper. If TJUN-ia's controversial "MemeWatch" was a thing in international football, Kerry Spalding would pepper the list.

Unfortunately, Piers Adcock is still a raging asshole. He likes to think he's been kept on the bench because the other players are jealous of him. Nathan Ellis says he's been kept on the bench because Piers is so full of his own shit, and he's seriously considered "laying him low" to take care of his attitude. How bad is it? Before a training session leading up to the start of World Cup 89, Piers marched into the locker room and declared "the future of Hapiloppian football has just arrived, and that future is me!" He's lucky Nate Ellis didn't go over and pop him in the mouth. He is not liked among his teammates due to his attitude, and eventually something's got to give.

Just so you know, Rufus Parnell Hartley is a nice guy. He'll be the first donating at church. He tips well at restaurants. He helps at the soup kitchen if needed. But on the field, he's one of those guys that will get into a brawl on the pitch if someone wrongs him. He'll drop a player with the kind of tackle that makes Nathan Ellis wish he had pulled that on Alexis Fotellis. But he'll also score goals if needed, scoring nine last year for Pinkerton. He'll be a dominating presence on the offensive side of the pitch, making other players bend to his will, by force if need be. Away from the pitch, Hartley's family owns dozens of Jane's Diner franchises all around the Pinkerton area, to the point where some have called Hartley "the heir to the all-night diner".

#23 - ORAL ROUNDTREE | Midfielder | Age: 23 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @roundtree25 | Club: Mliona-Lpaka (Turori)

So imagine going through life with the name "Oral." Poor Oral's parents had nine months and they came up with Oral. His classmates had a field day with that name. That was, until he started playing football. There's a story that goes around Michael Bell High in North Hampton about how a student in a physical education class had spent the entire day getting on Oral's case about his name, with all of THOSE jokes. Once they got onto the soccer pitch, that student stopped making those jokes. Oral had nutmegged him and made him look like a complete idiot. And that's what he does. He doesn't let the jokes bother him, he just gets the job done and turns the jokers into the jokes like he's always done. These days, he plays for Mliona-Lpaka, a side in Turori, and there he hopes the Turorians won't put two and two together with his name.

Poor William Altenberry. Last year, Altenberry was a solid starter on Team Hapilopper, being one of the prominent pieces in the team's midfield. But controversially, Altenberry was relegated to a bench role for this World Cup campaign in favor of Parker Mathis, the son of the President of Hapilopper. While Altenberry was understandably disappointed with it, he has taken the move in stride, refusing to badmouth the team or their coaches for the move. Instead, he has vowed to make them change their mind, and do that through his play. Very dedicated to the Pinkerton community, and is heavily involved with his church there.

#30 - FABIAN TRELOAR | Defenseman | Age: 23 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @treloar | Club: Pinkerton City SC
Style of Play: Zone Defense | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Not enough | Attitude: Friendly
So, just for one second, close your eyes and picture in your mind the first thing that comes through your mind when we say "Fabian Treloar." What did he look like? The kind of pretty male that appears on the front of those weird-ass romance novels they sell in supermarkets? That would be incorrect. This guy's got a dingy dark mullet, he's a little chubby, and he's far from the kind of person that ladies dream of. He reads comic books and streams video games. On the pitch, though, Fabian can stop an offensive from the middle, and when he does, he does it very efficently. He's not a cheap bastard about it, he's just efficent. If he gets a card, it's by total accident. Many suggest he has a bright future ahead, but it wouldn't hurt him to get a little more physical, a little dirtier, and quite frankly, there's no shame in getting a card or two. In Hapilopper, it's to be expected.

#31 - QUINTIN MONTAGUE | Defenseman | Age: 23 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: @q-mont18 | Club: Garvinson Trojans
Style of Play: Man-To-Man | Speed: Fast | Physicality: Moderate | Attitude: Professional
Here's a reader. Quintin Montague is one of the biggest readers in Hapiloppian sport. He'll read anything. He'll read an offensive effort. He'll read the Garvinson Picayune. He'll read the lips of a fan in the 17th row. He'll read all the latest popular novels released in Hapilopper. He'll try to read a midfielder's mind as they're racing down the pitch. And he'll read the playbooks ad nauseam. That's a good attitude to have, and it's a good trait. But what Montague doesn't have is that killer instinct to be a regular starter, at least, not yet. He's been psyched out by opposing players a little too much for Team Hapilopper's liking. Members of the coaching staff are working on this, though. How they're working on it, well, watch this space. It might involve Nathan Ellis and some drill sergeant tactics, which sounds a little frightening on its face.

#33 - LEVI BATESON | Defenseman | Age: 22 | Kicks: Left | twii.tur: @levi_bateson | Club: West Hampton Sports Club
Style of Play: Man-To-Man | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Sufficient | Attitude: Relaxed
Known more for his prowess on the saxophone than his prowess on the pitch, Levi Bateson nevertheless gets by with his play for the West Hampton Sports Club, which, before you get any ideas, is more than enough to stop an offensive effort if need be. Some suggest that Bateson's style of play is a throwback to the pre-World Cup days, when Hapiloppian footballers would play a more relaxed style of football. That's not a compliment. It's removed from the hair-on-fire, balls-to-the-wall style of play that has developed since Hapilopper started playing international football. Either way, he's still good at it, good enough to make the national team. As for his saxophone prowess, it's magnificent. Bateson plays for a band that tours across the Hampton Cities, and his saxophone solos are among the most popular parts of their concerts.

#60 - KENNY SHELLEY | Goalkeeper | Age: 23 | Kicks: Right | twii.tur: (none) | Club: Daedonggang 3.26 (Quebec and Shingoryeo)
Style of Play: Roving Keeper | Speed: Medium | Physicality: Low | Attitude: Excitable
Kenny Shelley will be the first to tell you that he's not expecting much in the way of playing time. He's a servicable keeper for FC Surrey, but good enough to get an assignment on the national team. He's averaged around 97 minutes per goal allowed, which is good, but not great. Many suggest that his best days are well ahead of him, as with most of the Hapiloppian team. Could he be another Cooter Harris? It's hard to say. At least he has the persona down pat. Shelley drives a 1986 Major pick-up truck, a truck he's had since high school. He's carried everything from lumber to dirt to his girlfriend in the back of that truck, and it's likely he loves that truck more than life itself.

By now, you've seen the videos by now, or at least, we hope you've seen the videos. Duke Stamp decided one day to try out the concept of automotive buoyancy. So he drove his car as fast as he could into the pool of one of his teammates. The car went right in the pool and proved the theory that automotive buoyancy, for the most part, is total bullshit. Worse, it was a $65,000 Preston Super Skychief that he had just bought off the dealership floor, a car that had 25 miles on it. So Duke Stamp wound up ruining a brand new, very nice car just to try out this idiotic theory that cars can float. On the pitch, Stamp is an efficient goalkeeper, averaging 125 minutes per goal allowed, but he's relegated to keeper no. 3 because of his idiotic behavior.

The End of Ellis: Part One

The Team Hapilopper Headquarters, Hapilopper City
The morning after World Cup 91 Match 3: Hapilopper 2-2 Ko-oren

“Yeah, he’s hurt bad. Real bad,” Thom Perkins grimly said to reporters, almost as if he was trying to keep his emotions in check.

Honestly, the fact that Team Hapilopper had been eliminated from the group stage of World Cup 91 was an afterthought. Nathan Ellis was in a hospital in Farfadillis, having collapsed away from the play. Usually, when Nathan Ellis hit the turf away from the play, it meant someone had paid him back for one of his typical cheap shots. But that wasn’t the case. He was nowhere near any of the Dragonflies. He just fell, clutching his left knee. Replays showed that, through some incredible turn of bad luck, Nathan had stepped wrong on the turf, and the years of his brutal physical play had finally caught up to him.

The diagnosis came out the morning after Team Hapilopper was eliminated – Nathan had completely blown out his knee, and had ripped apart his ACL, MCL, meniscus and his patella tendon at the same time. Essentially, his left knee had cried enough. Nathan knew the writing was on the wall, and at 36 years old, decided that his days of playing football were over. From his hospital bed the next morning, Nathan went on twii.tur and declared that it was time for him to move on in his life and do something different with his life.

But damn it, it was so hard to do. Sitting in that hospital was the absolute last thing he wanted to do. Sitting there with that knee blown out, unsure of what his future would look like, was, far and away, the worst outcome Nathan could have dreamed of. Before he hit “send” on his phone to formally announce his retirement, Nathan put his phone down and burst into tears. It was too much for him to take. All he had ever known was playing football, and now it was done.

Football had literally been the one thing that kept him going, the one thing that kept him out of jail, the one thing that he lived for. Had it not been for football, he might have ended up in and out of Hapilopper’s prison system, another sad statistic in life. Playing the game gave him purpose. It gave him reason to behave himself and make a comfortable living. And playing the game gave him that living. He had a small one-bedroom apartment in Hapilopper City that didn’t cost much per month, and the same went when he played in Nephara. He figured he didn’t need anything extravagant. All he wanted was a place to play football.

And as a result, Nathan was able to save a ton of money for himself. When he started out at FC Buckridge about 18 years ago, Nathan was introduced to Jack Poitevint, a renowned financial advisor based in the area. Poitevint was able to convince Nathan to set aside funds for himself, to put in what were referred to as “stable” stocks – stocks with a low risk and a high reward to them, and after every paycheck, Nathan could put some money aside for these stocks.

Consequently, Nathan was one of the richest professional athletes in Hapilopper, and very few of those funds came from endorsements. After all, few companies wanted to put their financial weight behind Nathan, with his unfortunate, but very well-earned reputation for being a total thug on the pitch. A huge company such as Preston Autos or Mel’s Ultra-Mart didn’t want someone like Nathan Ellis in their commercials at the same time that he was slamming a player into the turf or threatening to end the life of a poor midfielder or referee.

But yet, much of Nathan’s wealth came from owning stock in those two companies. Mel’s grew exponentially over the years, and Preston’s name grew substantially on the backs of drivers like Drake Stevenson, Rudy Edwards, Chris Holmes and Taylor Henderson. On the back of the Super Skychief, the fastest production car ever built by a Hapiloppian company. So, as Nathan sat in a hospital bed, he at least didn’t have to worry about his future. He figured he could unload his stock, sell it all and live off his winnings.

Knowing this, Nathan felt a little better. He could live the rest of his life, theoretically, on easy mode. He wanted to stay with Team Hapilopper and serve as a coach for players as they prepared for such contests as the AOCAF and the World Cup. So many players on Team Hapilopper looked up to him, and they were so grateful for his tutelage and his guidance as he worked with him. And guiding those players to greater success, to him, was just a great a thrill as it was to win ballgames as a player.

Even still, even just to walk normally would take a long, painful rehabilitation. He’d get there. But he’d feel it. He’d have some really tough days and nights to come. Nights where he wouldn’t be able to sleep because the pain was intense, nights where he wouldn’t be able to sleep because the painkillers made him viciously ill.

In a span of less than half an hour, the entire Fort McKinley National Team had been turned upside down; not only had they lost their final match in the group stage, the tiebreaking permutations meant that they would not advance to the knockout stage in the Cup of Harmony. As if that hadn't been bad enough, upon returning to the dressing room, their talisman and leading scorer David Guy Allen was nowhere to be found--his kit on the floor in front of his cubicle, civilian clothes and personal effects gone—causing the rest of the squad to contemplate what it meant.

“He's done a runner.”
“No, Dave? Why would he?”
“Maybe he's gone to the hospital.”
“Maybe he's went to meet up with Lee.”

One of the backroom staff hurried to find Manager Chris Gray, who'd been speaking with an official of the FMFA and the boss felt enormously uneasy as he looked around the room.
“Please someone tell me that he's gone to find something to eat.”
Empty faces looked back at him and he actually wasn't sure what to do next.

“His kitbag is still here, he didn't pack his boots or warm ups”, one of the dressing room attendants noted.

There were several issues at play here, not the least of which was who was in charge of the traveling party in this situation? The FA people were mainly just support staff, the PIC detail was there for security and a notoriously closed society had no diplomatic relations with the hosts. Another factor was media coverage, which would come into play if the police were approached for help.

The head of the PIC agents was alternating between seeing the rest of his life pass in front of eyes and having an angry meltdown.

“I want all the spouses and relatives loaded on the coaches and taken to the airport as soon as possible. I will speak to the head of the stadium security”.

Agent Bob Roy Smith found the Chief Superintendent in charge of the match day police and asked to have a discreet word.
“Sir, we are concerned that one of spectators from our nation has either been lured away, or kidnapped during the match.”
The CS understood the man's concern and asked for a few other details. “What would lead you to believe that the person was taken against their will?”
“It is hard to imagine a citizen of Fort McKinley not wishing to return home, so the thought they might leave surreptitiously is quite low on or list of motives.”
“When do you believe this incident occurred, sir?”
“At some point during the final fifteen minutes, as others have reported that was when the subject
was seen personally.”

The policeman noted but did not comment on the use of the term 'subject' but invited Smith to the command center to review the CCTV footage.

There, spread out across several monitors, Smith watched the entire thing unfold: the view of Allen hobbling to the dressing room, the casual exit made by Lee, and then the older Allen and her boyfriend, their casual stroll to the exit gate, and then David's exit from the dressing room, as the guard at the pass gate didn't look up from what he was doing.

“Seems to me Agent, that you have more than one bird that's flown the coop. Have the team reported the disappearance of the player as well?”
Smith gave a curt reply and concluded the interview. “I have little choice but to take the entire traveling party back to Fort McKinley, as I have no way of asking for guidance from the government at this moment. The matter will be picked up by them and dealt with on a diplomatic level. Be advised that none of the four are in possession of their passports, so you would be within your rights to detain them as illegal aliens. I would ask that you not make this situation public, although I realize you are under no obligation to grant my request.”

After Smith left, the CS picked up the phone and called his immediate superior, the Assistant Chief Constable.

As the luggage was loaded onto the plane, Smith and his team retrieved the bags that belonged to David & Jason but not the two women, which of course had been left behind.

Gray and his coaches, along the rest of the backroom staff, were all summarily fired for reasons having more to do with performance than the defections; every player was questioned thoroughly about what they knew, had heard or seen, although none were implicated. That did not stop the FMFA from replacing a third of the COH squad, including three starters.

Smith was demoted and a few of the other PIC agents were fired for incompetence, although no one could actually point to anything they could've done differently.

The families of Kate, Dave, Jason and Lee were all questioned about their knowledge, which also brought about no information although the Guy Allens were subject to increased scrutiny. The investigation into their personal affairs uncovered the withdrawals of cash although where it all went remained a mystery.

Nothing was mentioned in the official press reports about the disappearance of D.G. Allen from the national team, except as one of the players removed from the squad; there were whispers in certain circles about defection, which grew into rumors about various circumstances—they'd been caught trying to defect and were under arrest, they'd been corrupted by the capitalist evils they'd seen in Mertagne—but no one really knew for sure.

Brief National Team History
The Kadongo Kamu have played in exactly 581 games, as of the end of Eagle's Cup XIII. This is our 18th World Cup cycle overall. We have entered in 15 previous World Cup Qualification campaigns(WCQ73, WCQ74, WCQ75, WCQ76, WCQ77, WCQ79, WCQ80, WCQ82, WCQ84, WCQ85, WCQ86, WCQ87, WCQ88, WCQ89, and WCQ90), and have successfully qualified for 10 out of the last 11 World Cups, famously missing World Cup 89 while we were ranked 5th in the world. We have also participated in Baptism of Fire 60, and been a participant in four different Cup of Harmonies(CoH 66, CoH 67, CoH 71, and CoH 81). In four Cups of Harmony, Banija has only once moved past the group stage, in CoH 81, and they promptly fell on penalties in the Round of 16. In their lone Baptism of Fire, they earned a lone point.

After not competing at all during the World Cup 78 Cycle due to the RBSA's bankruptcy, they re-entered the world of international football in World Cup 79 cycle. A shocking World Cup 79 Qualification campaign saw them on the brink of qualifying, but the team simply ran out of gas and lost 4 of their final 5 matches to not make it to Ceni/Drawkland. Since then, the U21 team got 3rd place at the 42nd Di Bradini Cup, and the national team advanced to the quarterfinals of AOCAF LV, AOCAF LVI, and AOCAF LVII, establishing themselves as a strong regional side, falling to the eventual champs in the latter two tournaments. They stunningly qualified for World Cup 80, after starting poorly by losing 5 of their first 9, to going unbeaten in the second half of qualifying, where they won 7 of those games. In the World Cup 80 Qualification playoffs, a 3-0 first leg victory in Montreal, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, powered the team through to their first ever appearance in the World Cup Finals, advancing to sport's pre-eminent competition 5-3 on aggregate over Mercedini. While a pair of one goal losses saw them eliminated after two games, they earned their first ever victory at the World Cup Finals in a 2-0 win over New Gazi in their final group stage game. As they hosted World Cup 81, they went directly to the tournament, and went to their first ever knockout stages, winning Group A before falling, 1-1(2-1 AET) to Turori in the Round of 16. They cruised to qualification in World Cup 82, maintaining a top two spot in their World Cup Qualification group behind Brenecia for the entirety of the World Cup 82 Qualification campaign, getting to the tournament with relative ease before bowing out in the group stages.

The World Cup 83 cycle was their strongest yet. Starting with AOCAF LVIII on home soil, co-hosted with the Commonwealth of Baker Park, the Kadongo Kamu won 6 consecutive matches to open the tournament, taking their winning streak all the way to the final. Unfortunately, they were felled, 4-2, at home to their archrivals, the Equestrian States. Co-hosting World Cup 83 as well, the Banijans made a miraclous run at the World Cup, upending 5th ranked South Covelllo on penalties, and defeating the then two-time defending world champions Vilita in the quarterfinals, before falling, 3-2, at the national stadium to Starblaydia. They added to the trophy case, however, earning a bronze medal after defeating Cassadaigua in the 3rd place playoff game.

The World Cup 84 cycle, the first with real title expectations for the Banijans, was a disappointment in the regionals, as we fell 1-0 to Ko-oren in the AOCAF Round of 16, although we advanced to the quarterfinals of World Cup 84 before dropping to Eura in extra time. The World Cup 85 cycle seems to be a promise of hope for the Banijans. Although AOCAF LX was a rough tournament for the Banijans, it was surrounded by two excellent tournament performances for the Banijans. We won the U21 World Cup(DBC 47), and are just coming off earning our first ever senior-level trophy, by winning the 8th Eagle's Cup to be admitted as a full, permanent member of the Eagle's Club right before the beginning of World Cup Qualifying. Following that, the Banijans dominated World Cup 85 Qualifying, going wire-to-wire as the first place team in their World Cup Qualifying group, as well as earning more points in World Cup Qualifying(67) than any other team did throughout the entire campaign. Those strong performances both in the Eagle's Cup and World Cup Qualifying have caused fans to put an up and down AOCAF behind them, and heighten the standard for World Cup 85. While they escaped the group stages with four points, strong wins over Vilita and Zwangzug in the knockouts put them on course for a medal, as they eventually beat allies Baker Park in the bronze medal match, after falling 3-2 to the eventual champions Free Republics in the semifinal.

After a return to the AOCAF LXI Quarterfinals, their first quarterfinal appearance in the last 3 editions of the regional championships, they fell to Chromatika on penalties. The World Cup 86 Qualification campaign went rather swimmingly- the national team went a perfect 18-0-0 in World Cup Qualifying, the first time that had happened in well over 10 cycles. The multiverse's #1 ranked squad was brimming with confidence, the two-time bronze medalists entering World Cup 86 trying to win the biggest trophy in all of sports for the first time.

Marcus Waters has always preached the following- "you've got to win at home before you can win the World Cup." It's always meant you've got to win in Atlantian Oceania before you can expect to win the World Cup. And while we've never won the AOCAFs, our group was all Atlantian Oceania sides- Ko-oren, Chromatika, and Mriin. We finished in first place with a 1-0 win over Ko-oren, a 2-2 draw against Chromatika, and a 0-0 draw against Mriin being enough to earn 5 points. Then, we faced a gauntlet of former World champions. A 1-0 win over them put us in our fourth consecutive World Cup Quarterfinal, against 5 time World champions Valanora. A thrilling 4-3 win put us in the semifinal, again facing a GSW rival- World Cup 84 winners Farfadillis. In one of the wildest World Cup semifinals ever played, Banija came out on top 7-6, with a stoppage time winner to put them in the Final against the World Cup 85 winners Nephara. It was a true game of the century- neither team had lost a competitive match since the start of World Cup Qualifying, neither losing during Qualifying or the Finals. And in that thriller, it would be the Banijans who would win, taking a lead and holding onto it, winning by 3 goals to 2 against Nephara to lift the trophy and declare themselves World Cup Champions.

The ensuing AOCAF was strong, but not as strong as they wanted it to be. After starting slowly and losing their opening two games, they finished well done the stretch of group play, and even won a pair of knockout stage games before eventually falling to the champions, Baker Park, in the Semifinals. The Banijans redeemed themselves by earning a bronze medal against Sarzonia. The team took a B squad to Eagle's Cup IX, but a strong performance there landed them a silver medal, losing in the final to Valanora. World Cup 87 did not go the way they expected, getting eliminated in the group stages for the first time since World Cup 82. But we recovered in the World Cup 88 cycle. While a quarterfinal elimination at both Eagle's Cup X and AOCAF LXIII were not great, we were unbeaten in World Cup 88 Qualifying, and reached the World Cup 88 Semifinals, eliminating the defending champions Nephara and falling to the eventual champions Turori along the way. We used that momentum of the semfiinal run to finally earn a regional title, as on our 10th try, we finally won the AOCAFs, defeating Hapilopper in the semifinals and Valanora in the Final, winning both matches via penalty kick shootouts.

That regional title meant little in World Cup Qualifying, however, as Pemecutan and Zwangzug both pipped past Banija to automatically qualify for the World Cup, and left Banija in the dust, gasping for air. That called for a reset from the RSBA, which led to Marcus Waters resigning and Pam Scott be hired. While neither the Cup of Harmony nor the AOCAFs went particularly well, Pam Scott's laser focus on qualifying for the World Cup was a success, as the team not only went to World Cup 90, but showed up in style, winning a pair of penalty shootouts, before falling to the eventual winners, The Holy Empire, on PKs, in the semifinals. They still beat Valanora in the third place match, 2-1, to earn their third overall bronze medal. We are looking to build upon that performance, to get back not only to the World Cup, but with the knockout stages as the team's goal.

Select Player Bios

1. CB Demba Kinteh

Demba Kinteh has an interesting career arc himself. He made a name for himself in Banija, helping a team win a huge upset at the RBSA Cup, and using that to help launch his own career. He's won at every level. He won at the U18 level, winning a World Cup there. He's a senior World Cup champion, having won at World Cup 86. He's won multiple league titles in the S-FPL. And he's won the AOCAFs as well.

Having won basically everywhere he's been, with Nzo essentially relegated back to the bench, Demba Kinteh has been given the greatest of honors- the armband. He's going to be much more than simply the elite defender in the middle of Banija's back 3. He's going to have to be the face of the team, the team's veteran leader. Can he handle all of that extra responsibility? And as he has mentioned, of course, there is plenty of additional pressure considering Banija's situation. Can they rebound from a disappointing group stage exit at the World Cup for glory at the AOCAFs?

This is a team that is going to focus on harnessing its abundance of attacking talent, and turning that into goals. They are certainly capable of being exposed on the counter-attack, and that is where the back 3 will have to act as one. Can Kinteh organize the defense into an effective enough force, despite the team's attacking focus?

2. ST Kausu Dione

And now, for the starting striker. Ilman Jawara had been the main man up top for so long, the days of Assefa Yitebarke leading the front lines feel like an eternity ago. When he retired from international duty, after World Cup 87, Kausu Dione won the competition to replace him as the team's starting striker. When he then parlayed that into winning a Player of the Season award in one of the world's toughest league(Audioslavia), he was essentially fixed in his spot as one of Banija's two starting strikers.

He's a world champion at two levels- a starter on Banija's U18 World championship team, and a starter on Banija's U21 world championship team. While Kadongo Kamu teammate Wanda Kouyate is the multiverse's only three-level world champion(U18, U21, Senior) Kausu Dione is going to go for a more impressive feat- become the first person to be a three-level world champion as a starter on every level, since Kouyate was only a starter on the U21 squad. He's got the regional title, making him one of the most decorated players in Banijan history. But the pressure is on him. He wasn't on the World Cup winning team, so his legacy could be defined entirely by Banija's failures at World Cup 89. Can he continue his climb up Banija's all-time scoring list, shake that reputation, and lead Banijan to glory in Atlantian Oceania's greatest competition?

3. Idi Mboge

Mboge has the distinction of being the only Banijan to ever win the Cup of Harmony. How, one may ask? He probably has the most interesting career arc of any of Banija's players to play for the Kadongo Kamu. He was born to Banijan migrants in Maal, the capitol city of Mriin. So he grew up in Mriin, and played soccer in their youth system. But with a firm ceiling for human players in Mriin, he went to his country of origin when his parents realized that he was indeed good enough to go pro.

When he hit the scene in Banija's youth leagues, he was immediately a star, winning the player of the year award, and getting selected for Banija's U21 World Cup team at DBC 47. But his success there got the attention of higher-ups in Mriin. Why not get rid of that artificial ceiling? They sent him a late invitation to join the squad, to accept their call-up. The day before Banija's first game of DBC 47, he decided to leave Banija's U21 squad to play for his country of birth, Mriin. To say he faced criticism was an understatement. An unprecedented amount of vitriol for a dual-national, but when you consider the nature of him leaving(aka when the tournament was basically underway), it struck a lot of fans and players the wrong way.

From that point, he would go ahead and choose to play for Mriin's senior side. He was a key contributor to Mriin's Cup of Harmony winning side, giving him a major international trophy before they quit international sport. But with Mriin no longer sending out their national teams, that left only one option- for Idi Mboge to return. And he didn't, at least for a while. Last cycle, he was blackballed by Marcus Waters, who knew that his former teammates from Banija's U21 side still held a grudge. The entire World Cup 88 cycle, he wasn't invited. AOCAF LXIV? Please.

Then, the Olympics came around. U23- he's too old, right? But wait- three overage players allowed. So Marcus said, why not? Select Idi Mboge. The team got eliminated in the group stages. And then, Mboge went to the Eagle's Cup. Banija got a bronze medal at the Cup of champions. But Mboge showed enough to get called up to the A squad for World Cup Qualifying. How will his teammates react? Will fans accept him? The burning questions that must be asked. And there was no discord- he integrated well onto the national team.

Unfortunately for him, he's dealt with the pressure by not playing in the Eagle's Cup or the Cup of Harmony, as Pam Scott sent the foreign based players to focus on their clubs while Banija's domestic-based players would play in those tournaments. He's back at the top, and will be put under a lot of pressure. He's seemed to put the DBC debacle behind him, but if things start to go poorly... He's the easiest scapegoat for the squad's struggles.

Facing ultimatum, Bartoš chooses Delaclava

Star midfielder Martin Bartoš confirmed in a press conference Wednesday morning that he has concluded his representation of Verceola in international soccer and will play for the Delaclav national team for all future tournaments.

"I am a Verceolan, but I am also a Delaclava, and I play Delaclav football," Bartoš declared.

The Delaclav football community awaited Bartoš's decision in the lead-up to the AOCAF Cup. With both Delaclava and Verceola again entered into the competition, and Bartoš making himself available for selection for the first time in several years, the two football federations issued a bilateral ultimatum for Bartoš to make a final, permanent decision on his national representation. The result seemed clear when both federations published their AOCAF squads and only Delaclava had included Bartoš, but Bartoš confirmed in the press conference that his choice was a direct response to the ultimatum.

Bartoš, 25, was born and raised in Verceola and first represented the Bulls as a 17-year-old in the 61st AOCAF Cup and the 86th World Cup, although he had played in the Delaclava youth system for several years before joining Steckholl United. Bartoš was officially classified as Verceolan during his several seasons with Tikariotian club Dhun Lagarr FC. However, Bartoš first dressed for the Phoenixes at the 63rd AOCAF Cup and was a key figure in the Phoenixes' qualification for the 91st World Cup, snapping an absence of 34 Cups from the main draw. Bartoš was officially listed as a dual national in this past transfer window, in which he was acquired by Squornshelan club Lublova Reds.

The decision is a blow to the ongoing legitimacy of football teams for Delaclava's autonomous regions. In Delaclava's time away from international soccer, two offshoot nations were represented in international competition: Firinsymnia, in a handful of friendlies - and they have twice entered the World Cup but were excluded due to field limits; and Verceola, who first competed in a single AOCAF, Baptism of Fire, and World Cup qualification before Delaclava's return. Verceolans such as Bartoš and Fisher Ellery, and Firinsymnians including Wilfrid Gouin, Drystan Tudor, Odhran O'Glissane, and Amaury Racette have inspired hope that the disputed territories may have the capacity to represent themselves. Another territory, Grote Vrede, is home to enough Delaclav players, including Kent Lindblad, Joord Van Der Beek, and Sanson Eisen, that they could also potentially put together a competitive international team.

But for now, Bartoš recognizes that Delaclava has a lot of momentum and chemistry, and he is driven to make the most of that. "I have lived primarily in Delaclava for many years, and I have enjoyed playing for this program. We have had some bumps along the way but have come so far...I know there are some messy politics involved, but for what I want to accomplish personally and professionally, this was a very easy choice."

Bartoš is a Delaclav citizen by default, but Verceola also grants citizenship status to its own. Bartoš declined to comment on whether he is retaining that status, or if he will be allowed to do so, in the aftermath of his decision.

Delaclava opens its tournament against Kimi-Suomi, while Verceola will begin play against Qasden. Both teams will play their group stage somewhere in Valanora to be announced.

All-Star Special: Interview with Anton Osterholt and Gunnvor Nieminen

VO: Welcome back to All-Star Special. This week, I sat down with Anton Osterholt and Gunnvor Nieminen, who have both recently signed outside of the Isles and are in Farfadillis for the 67th edition of the AOCAF Cup. Our discussion ranged from their feelings about playing for clubs away from the Isles, to playing for the national team, to pregame rituals and more.

Reporter: Now that we're settled, how are you finding Farfadillis?

Anton Osterholt: Ah, it's definitely new. I've never been here before and it's a lot warmer than we're used to up in the Isles, getting to see all the local flora and fauna has been incredible, it's truly nothing like anybody from the Isles has ever seen. It's also a bit of a culture shock from the Isles to here, of course, with the focus back in Cordia being so much on safety, the different here is... pretty massive. I'm thankful that our government has seen fit to provide us with some security, just in case.

Gunnvor Nieminen: It's been really interesting, I've never really been able to travel out-of-country other than trips for IFCF matches with Cordasfjord, and never to Farfadillis before. But as we've been getting close to MD1 against Gyatso-Kai, I've been working pretty hard to get ready for the tournament and that's really where my mind is at right now.

Reporter: And what do you think of that upcoming match?

AO: We've got a good shot to win, and it's certainly the biggest game on our schedule. Not saying much more than that, I don't want to end up on Gyatso-Kai's bulletin board.

Reporter: Fair, for sure. Gunnvor, you're currently listed as a substitute. Do you think you'll get a lot of playing time both in the AOCAF Cup and the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers?

GN: We'll see with this tournament. I've had some really productive conversations with Hannah [Andersen, the starter at LCM] about the future at LCM for this team and we think I might get some time as a sub depending on how things go, and I might get some good playing time against Romsten, specifically. It all depends. For WCQs, yeah, I'll definitely start a decent amount against the weaker sides we'll be facing, but it all depends on how I play, so we'll have to wait and see.

Reporter: Anton, you've been a huge part of the Gilded City Dragons' roster for a very long time, can you explain the thought process that led to your leaving the club and heading to Chromatika?

AO: I originally wanted to play for an IFCF-caliber club, but realized pretty soon that I'd overestimated my worth and would end up having to choose between playing in a big league and playing for an IFCF qualifier. I got an offer from Alnio and another from Raven River, and I went with Alnio as a team that knows its stuff on the offensive side of the ball, something I've never really gotten to experience having played for Gilded City all my life, which is why I left the team. I just got a bit burned out from not just being a piece of the offense, but being the offense, so I'm really excited for my future at Alnio.

Reporter: And Gunnvor, you elected to leave a Cordasfjord side that is looking to take its third title in five years and its second in a row this season, heading to Bavingtor of Flavovespia. Why did you decide to leave and what are your thoughts on playing for Bavingtor?

GN: It just came out of a want, for me, to see some of the world, and playing internationally is a great way to do that. Now, Bavingtor has had a really nice run of international success and been on the come up for the last few years, and the league in Flavovespia is also pretty well-respected and receives a pair of Champions League spots each season. Also, they [Bavingtor] already picked up a Cordian in Oscar [Brokhorst], who earned some awards playing for them last season, so it's a great fit for me and hopefully I can help them keep this run of success going for a while yet.

Reporter: Last question, we're almost done here. Do either of you have pregame rituals you complete before every match? I know a lot of Cordians are pretty superstitious about this kind of thing and was wondering if you have any just so our subscribers can get to know you more.

AO: I do! I work back from the time of the match and the pregame meeting and always eat the same meals. It's pasta with alfredo two hours before the game and usually some kind of chicken around five hours before, but I'm less strict about that.

GN: I tend to practice my hand-eye and footwork by juggling. I try to just go for ten minutes, first try, no warm-up. No real superstition there, it's not "if I don't get ten minutes, I suck", but I've been doing that as a warm up ever since I was playing rep soccer for youth teams so it kind of counts about that. Pregame meals are just something light around an hour and a half before the game, and a pretty big breakfast or brunch depending on the time of the game.

el-Hamid took over from Maajid al-Shaer, who led the Green Falcons through two mediocre AOCAF campaigns, earning three draws in Siovanija & Teusland, and a first win in Equestria, but never seriously looking like contenders, and immediately took the Green Falcons to their first ever playoff round. Formerly a manager with Ashkarqa, Souday, and Al Maidura, el-Hamid is pretty experienced and regarded as a defensively minded coach who might have a low tolerance for poor discipline and the clumsy errors that have plagued past Green Falcons’ campaigns.

el-Saladin is a strong young center-back brought in at a tender age as the team seeks new options at the position it’s struggled at the most. With el-Aslam and al-Reza aged out, the young talent al-Jalil is brought in to partner him. Stockier and less of an aerial threat, he's at least a bit better on the ball. The flashy Kassis has been in and out of the team: for now, he's back in, while the team’s best player remains Zaman, a wing-back with a powerful right boot who’s always a threat to shoot or cross; unusually for a fullback, he was the team’s highest scorer in World Cup qualifying.

Taking over from Saadiq Batr el-Matar is his young apprentice at AOPIC Greens, Mutlaq el-Basha, a sturdy defensive midfielder not afraid to put the boot on. He partners the experience el-Moustafa, who’s more of a holding midfielder, shuttling up and down the pitch. He has a good work rate but a poor final touch can let down his passing. The two hold down positions behind the playmarker, Hakimi, who’s been the team’s best player for a while, at least on his good days. He’s a popular player who likes to attack, both the opposition goal, and sometimes fans. el-Hashemi has already amassed a long and depressing injury history in his career as a playmaking attacking midfielder; el-Afzal is a dependable but not particularly exciting distributor; el-Saidi, new to the team, has attacking instincts that his skill set doesn’t always allow him to realize.

el-Fadel remains the first choice striker. He isn’t tall for a striker, but his low center of gravity allows him to stop and turn on a dinar, and he has a ferociously powerful left boot. Neither Akram nor el-Asri are true wingers: they'll play more as support strikers, the burly Akram cutting inside but not always making the best of his final touch, the speedy el-Nasir dogged off the ball but not a great shooter. el-Farooqi is a consistent trundler, al-Ali a talent who hasn't quite managed to out it together, al-Shaheed something of a has-been at this stage.
