Exclusive interview with cyclist Irina Okhmatov
Verlois

Irina Okhmatov who has been cycling since 4 years old, professionally since she was 18, and represented Vinalia in 3 Invictus Games. However, the 31 year old was not ready for when a fan walked in front of her bicycle at the end of the Tour de Vinalia, in Velkarichka. The tumble she took, as did the other 4 cyclists along with her, caused her to break her ankle in January. She was knocked out from competing for about 10 weeks. Her injury nearly knocked her out of the Invictus Qualifying period, but she was able to compete and earn her spot. Irina, who is no stranger to injuries, stated that this most recent injury caused her confidence issues, and she was scared of competing close to a crowd after the incident. She stated that she spends more time watching the crowd than she did before.

Leading a pack of 5 cyclists near the finish line. Marya Bugani who was waving a flag of Province of South Juyu Ruwach in support of her husband Bela (who was racing behind Irina), Bela was to slow down and grab the flag from his wife, as he was the sole cyclist from the province in the event. However Marya confused Bela and Irina, both wearing Blue shirts, and handed the flag to her. Irina who did not see the hand of the woman or the flag stretch into her did not react and hit the woman head on, causing her to lose balance and fall down. Bela too fell down, and had minor lacerations on his body. Marya, who is a cyclist herself, was unable to compete due to an ankle injury coincidentally and decided to retire before the race. She apologized for the issue and rushed to help Irina off the pile up. Irina stated that Marya apologized profoundly for the issue, and that she’s forgiven her. The National Association of Cyclists and the organizers of the event were not so kind. Issuing a 2 year ban to Bela, and a 5 year ban to Marya, as handing objects or obstructing the race track in any way is illegal. Had Marta’s and Belas' plan worked, both would have been issued a fine at best, with bans equally passed, but it was something worth it for them, as it was Belas last professional race before retiring either way. Both mentioned that they were deeply saddened and regretful by the event last January.

Irina however is in good spirits and is excited for the upcoming Verlois Invictus Games. “It’s certainly different” she stated when referring to the atmosphere between 2014, 2018 and 2022. Irina who is actually the daughter of Vinalian exiles that lived in Gaullica from 1970-1990, states that she was born months into her family returning to Catherinsk, following exile. She mentioned that Vinalian athletes have formed around her, as she can speak Gaullican fluently having attended a Gaullican language school in her youth. “I go out every night with small groups to restaurants and to show them the sights” she mentioned. “They’re all really excited to come here and see the race”. When asked about whether these would be her last Invictus games, she stated that her mind had always been in 2026, but that she will be content with retiring following 2022. “Depends on the medal, '' she mentioned. When asked whether her ankle was fully healed, she said that it was “as good as possible”.

Irina is competing tomorrow in the Women's Road race in the idyllic Avenue Jacques Prévost route. Which is set to be among the premier races in the Cycling season this year. Team Vinalia is well presented in Cycling, as they seek to bring Vinalia their first medal at these Invictus games, but for the Cycling Association of Vinalia which has never netted the nation a medal, something these cyclists are hoping to change.

Today, Imagua wins its first medal at the 29th Summer Invictus Games in Verlois, with swimmer Janice Battersby winning the 200 metre women's butterfly, with a time of 2:04.72, beating out Adamantine swimmer Michela Nardone by eight-tenths of a second, and beating out Emessan swimmer Pawlina Guerrera by 1.05 seconds.

After the medal ceremony, Janice Battersby was asked how she felt about winning Imagua's first ever medal at the 2022 Summer Invictus Games.

Battersby told ITS that "It feels amazing: this is my second time that I have medalled since Spálgleann [2018], and I am honoured to not only have had the chance to compete again for this marvellous team, but also continue to be part of this wonderful swimming community."

"To receive this gold medal, let alone win the first medal for my country [in the 2022 Invictus games] is incredible, and I am looking forward to seeing how well the Imaguan team does in the swimming competitions over the next few days," Janice Battersby said. "I am very confident that this is only the beginning."

When asked what will be the first thing she does now that she won, Battersby said that she would "take a nap before going back to the pool," as she wants "to be at top form for the women's marathon swimming competition this Sunday."

However, before she gets back into the pool, Janice Battersby said that she would "definitely be letting my parents know about [her victory at the 200 metre women's butterfly]."

When we interviewed the Imaguan women's swimming coach, Marana Dalino, she praised Janice Battersby's "steady as she goes" approach to swimming.

"Miss Battersby doesn't move quickly: in the 100 metre butterfly, we can see that she doesn't swim quite as quickly as her competitors from Eldmark, Gaullica, and Dezevau," Dalino told ITS. "However, in the 200 metre butterfly, whereas other athletes tire themselves out, she conserves her energy so that as the swimmers fall behind, she can move forward. I believe this is the secret to why she won [the 200 metre women's butterfly] and why we got our first gold medal here."

"I feel that Miss Battersby's approach is prudent," Dalino said. "If she were like the others, if she moved too quickly, then I do not think that Imagua would've won today: I think we would still be medalless."

Verlois 2022 Wrap Up: Sevens teams through to semis after victories in quarterfinals

July 16, 2022 (1:10pm)

VERLOIS, GAULLICA - Day Four of the 2022 Summer Invictus Games has provided both disappointment and excitement for Nuvanians as the rugby sevens quarterfinals were played, along with the first of three lots of swimming events and gymnastics qualifying got underway today.

Gymnastics
Two Nuvanians competed to qualify for the women's individual all-round artistic gymnastics event today, with Amanda Bunker and Katie Sherman vying for a place in their finals. The top 24 gymnasts qualify for the individual all-round final, while the top eight on each apparatus qualify for their respective apparatus final.

Bunker failed to fire, finishing 80th twice and a best place of 41st on the balance beam, putting her 70th overall.

Sherman put in two top eight scores on the uneven bars and the floor routine for a final score of 61.625, putting her 17th overall. Not only has she qualified for the individual all-round final, she has also qualified for the finals on the uneven bars and on the floor owing to her top eight finish. Sherman said that she was "very happy" with her results, especially as this was a better finish than what she achieved at the World Gymnastics Championships in Arciluco last November. She said that she hoped she could bring home a medal in one of the finals. If successful, it would make it the first ever medal Nuvania has won in the sport at the Invictus Games.
"It's very exciting," she said. "I really want to win but there's a lot of fantastic gymnasts and just even qualifying was a struggle."

Sherman will next be in action on July 25 in the all-round finals as well as the finals for the uneven bars and floor routine.

Rugby
Both the men's and women's teams have booked their place in the semi-finals in their Invictus campaign.

The women's team were not expecting the tough fight they were given in their semi-final against Ardesia, with the closest game of the Invictus Games so far seeing Nuvania edge ahead of Ardesia 46-45.

Ardesia would open the scoring with fly-half Verônica Carvalho showing a turn of speed, sprinting past the Nuvanians to put the ball between the posts, allowing for centre Monica Sá to punt the ball between the posts, putting Ardesia up 7-0. Ardesia would score again a couple of minutes later, this time prop Frederica Nascimento making a run down the Nuvanian right to evade the clutches of Chloë Weaver to furthe extend Ardesia's lead to 14 points after Sá's successful conversion. A fumbled pass from Sonia Matos put possession back into the hands of Nuvania, who made Ardesia pay for their mistake. Team captain and prop Saskia Steyn would make use of her speed and agility to evade the Ardesians and put Nuvania on the scoreboard. Wheeler would make a successful conversion, and the score narrowed to 14-7. A skillful play just before half time saw Nuvania even the score, Steyn going in for her second try of the match.

The second half saw Nuvania catch the Ardesians off-guard, with fly-half Ava van der Sandt zipping through a gap between two Ardesian players and putting the ball between the posts, making Wheeler's task much easier. Nuvania now took the lead 18-14 and would further extend the lead after an intercepted pass saw scrum-half Melissa van der Sandt punch through the Ardesian line before quickly offloading to Steyn, who scored her third try of the match. With the score at 28-14, Ardesia needed to score and quickly. Hope for them would come from a botched tackle against Eva Carriço, which was ruled unsafe. The yellow card was pulled and hooker Annie van Jaarsveld was sin-binned for ten minutes. Now down to six players, Ardesia put their advantage in numbers to good use. First over the line was Carriço, the player who had been unsafely tackled, who exploited the much wider gaps to put through a try close to the posts. Frederica Nascimento scored her second try of the match shortly afterwards. With the scores now evened back up, both teams had everything to play for.

The match entered extra time with both teams locked at 28 all. With van Jaarsveld back on the pitch, Nuvania felt a lot safer and more confident. But it would be Ardesia who would strike first again, Carriço racing through the Nuvanians once again to score her second try of the match. With the successful conversion, Ardesia retook the lead 35-28. Nuvania quickly responded, with Steyn making the most of another fumbled pass between two Ardesian players to even the scores. Nuvania would strike again, a long run by Chloë Weaver down the left making short work of the Ardesian defence. However, Wheeler would fail to make the conversion, leaving Nuvania five points ahead. Ardesia felt like the game was being slowly taken away from them when they conceeded a penalty kick to Nuvania after a high tackle from Sá against Melissa van der Sandt. Wheeler made the kick, Nuvania now pulling ahead 43-35. Play would resume and Ardesian team captain Rosia Paiva became the Ardesian hero of the match as she sprinted from beyond the halfway line far beyond the reaches of the Nuvanian players to put a try in below the posts. With the conversion made, the score narrowed considerably, although Nuvania still lead 43-42.

If the match so far didn't have everyone on the edge of their seats, then the last two minutes in extra time would. Ardesia had charged up the pitch towards the Nuvanian try line but a kick forwards had allowed Emma du Plessis to scoop up the ball and charge back towards the Ardesians, who managed to bring her down in a legal tackle. However, du Plessis didn't release the ball, and a penalty free kick was awarded to the Ardesians. María Souza took a drop kick between the posts and put Ardesia back ahead. Play resumed with Ardesia in possession. A kick forwards transferred possession of the ball back to Nuvania, which was picked up by Steyn, who quickly offloaded it to Wheeler. Wheeler drop kicked the ball through the Ardesian goal posts, scoring three points and crucially, one point ahead of Ardesia. With extra time ended, the match was called, and Nuvania won.

By comparison, the men's team sailed through their quarterfinal match in seemingly dominant fashion. Sohar had unexpectedly made it through to the quarterfinals but it would be here where the dream run would end, with Nuvania winning 45-13.

Nuvania would open the scoring for the match with fly half and team captain Shawn Taylor forcing his way through the Soharis to score a try close to the posts, the conversion easily made by Zane Johnston. Johnston would himself set up the next Nuvania try a couple of minutes later, punting the ball far enough ahead that winger Stiaan Petersen snatched it up before any of the Sohari players could reach it, Petersen flinging himself over the line.

Sohar would remind everyone why they were in the quarterfinals, with winger Kontar Toma showing a turn of speed as he managed to out run the Nuvanians for Sohar's first try of the match, although the conversion made by centre Anwar Rahal failed. Sohar would surprise everyone by scoring again before the second half, a skilled play of passes exploiting gaps in the Nuvanian line, although the defence held. Brute force finished off the play, with scrum-half Omar Isa shoving his way through Nuvania's defence to cross the try line. However, Rahal would again fail to convert the try, leaving the score 10-7 just before half time. Nuvania would make sure it was in charge going into the second half, with hooker Elliot Hayes scoring in the dying seconds of the first half.

Nuvania ran away with the game in the second half, scoring four unanswered tries, including another one for Taylor, with Johnston converting three out of four of them. Sohar's only points in the second half came from a penalty conceeded from Nuvania in the opening minutes of the second half. But it was not enough for Sohar, who were reminded why Nuvania has won multiple rugby sevens championships.

The women's team will now face fast and flying Rwizikuru, who edged past Soravia 26-21. Satavia and Maucha will play in the other sem-final after Satavia defeated Chistovodia 26-5, and Maucha defeated Rizealand 45-34. The men's team will face Soravia after they defeated Borland 28-19. Hosts Gaullica will face Scovern after beating Etruria 27-15, with Scovern beating Cassier 34-27.

Swimming
Success in gymnastics and rugby did not translate to success in the pool, with no medals won from the first lot of swimming events that's been described as one of the worst performances in the pool in recent years. Four time Invictus medalist Lewis Myburg had what he described as "one of his worst performances ever", finishing 18th in the 100m butterfly and 15th in the 200m butterfly event. Gavin Whitfield finished 40th in the 100m breaststroke and Drew Philips faired little better, finishing 22nd. Nuvania's best performance of the day in the men's events was from Reid Bridges, who finished fifth in the men's 50m freestyle event and the only male swimmer in medal contention today.

Elize Cilliers and Adrianna David faired little better than the men, along with the rest of Nuvania's female swimmers. Cilliers and David finished well outside the top ten in the women's 50 metre freestyle event. Kristie Poole finished 15th in the women's 100 metre freestyle and 44th in the women's 100 metre butterfly events. Alicia Evans finished 23rd in the women's 200 metre breaststroke event, with Adrienne Rey finishing 54th.

Myburg said he was disappointed with his performance but also said that there had been a "huge amount of new talent" that had come into the sport professionally since 2018. The 32 year old said that it was "probably inevitable" that he would be surpassed by new swimmers.
"That's how things go," he said. "It sucks but there's not much that can be done."

Tomorrow
Day Five will see road cycling begin it's programme as well as more action from the pool.

In road cycling, Alex Case, David Fisher, Adarm Irvine, Martin Kingsley, and Amos Siddall will be competing in the men's road race, with Jessie Campbell, Ella Henry, and Alana Simmons competing in the women's road race.

In swimming, Pieter Cloete and Lee McBride will be competing in men's backstroke and Johan Louw in the men's 200 metre individual medley. Kristie Poole and Adrianna David, and Alicia Evans will be returning to the pool for the women's backstroke and relay events alongside Ellie Andrews and Erin Newman, while Emily Barton will also compete in the individual 200 metre medley as well as the 4x200 metre relay.

Coverage of tomorrows events, including the rugby and swimming, will be broadcast live on NBC One and livestreamed on NuSport and NBC Sports.
