Tennis players in the Mixed and Mens doubles will compete for a place in the semi-finals.

Former World Number 1 Oslaf Vefer is looking to make a comeback at this year's Invictus Games in Verlois.

VERLOIS, GAULLICA - Alsland's tennis players in the Mixed and Mens doubles will compete for a position in the semi-finals at the Invictus Games in Verlois tomorrow against players from Senria and Paretia respectively. Sotirian Mayrhofer and Aarne Eskola will compete in the Mens doubles against Paretians Rodolfo Turro and Paulinho Silva, whilst Laurenske Jansen-Looke and Oslaf Vefer will compete in the Mixed doubles against Senrians Sigeharu Ikeda and Hiroki Yamazaki at the Stade Jean Cavinet in Verlois.

Oslaf Vefer - the former world number 1 in Tennis - had briefly taken a break from Tennis after suffering a severe knee injury at the Alslandic Open in 2020 and there were concerns that Vefer may not qualify for the Invictus Team however Vefer disproved these doubts with an impressive performance during qualifying matches. Him and his teammate, the 18 year old newcomer Laurenske Jansen-Looke, handily defeated doubles players Wira Kusumo and Nirmala Sugiarto from Kabu's unified team on Monday. Speaking yesterday after their win over the Kabuese pair to ANS' flagship morning talkshow, Jansen-Looke and Vefer were both confident in their abilities to defeat the Senrian duo on Thursday and reach the semi-finals. When asked if they were aiming for gold Jansen-Looke replied: "There's a lot of good players but we'll see."

This is Laurenske Jansen-Looke first Invictus Games although according to her parents - former Tennis stars Marek Looke and Oda Jansen - competing at the Invictus has been Laurenske's dream since childhood. Having come first in two consecutive Federal Youth Tennis competitions in 2018 and 2019 Jansen-Looke was also able to qualify for this year's Invictus Games. The 18 year old had only just celebrated graduating from her Gymnasium in Rahu before flying to Verlois with the rest of the team, when asked about her experiences in the Invictus Village, she replied that it was simply amazing. For her teammate Oslaf Vefer, this is his fifth Invictus Games having first qualified for the 2006 Crescent Island City in Dezevau and he is surely hoping this will be the Games where he finally wins a medal having come excruciatingly close on all previous attempts.

In the Mens Doubles, Sotirian Mayrhofer and Aarne Eskola will be playing off against the Paretian pair Rodolfo Turro and Paulinho Silva. The pair qualified for the quarter-finals after defeating their Dezevauni competitors to advance where they will play the Paretian duo tomorrow at the same venue as Jansen-Looke and Vefer. Mayrhofer's brother, Janik was the Alslandic flagbearer and this will be the first Invictus where the siblings will have both qualified as Janik will be competing for Alsland in road cycling later on in the games. This is the first Invictus Games for both Eskola and the younger Mayrhofer but both are said to be in good spirits by their coach with Eskola even finding the time to post on social media about the food available at the Invictus Village.

Tomorrow is a big day for the Alslandic team and whilst the focus may be on the Tennis quarter-finals, Alslandic competitors are also hoping for success in Taekwando as well as the individual and team Sabre competitions and artistic gymnastics.

Invictus 2022: Zorasan sees progress on Day 2
Silver in Men's Super Heavyweight and bronze in Men's featherweight boxing. And great anticipation for Zorasan's football team

Zorasan won its first medals on Day 2 of the Invictus Games in Verlois today, achieving a silver and bronze in men's boxing. There is also growing excitement over the country’s Invictus football team, which has progressed to the quarterfinals, the furthest it has reached at any Invictus event.

Boxing success
Image

Zorasan saw its first medal successes in boxing, with Jaffar Koshkam winning bronze in the Men’s Featherweight category. Koshkam who is the national champion in featherweight boxing, defeated Shangea’s Qui Sang 5-0 in his first match. In his second, he defeated the highly praised Aleksandr Kozlov of Soravia 5-0, a surprise win to many commentators. In his third match, Koshkam defeated Hacyinia’s
Yerbol Sakenuly 4-1 in a brutal game that seemed to test the 22-year-old Zahedan native to his limits. However, Koshkam’s success came to an end with a brutal defeat at the hands of Nuvania’s Finlay Anderson, who went on to win silver. However, Koshkam’s round totals secured him his first ever Invictus accolade, and Zorasan its first bronze medal.

Speaking to UCTV after his match against Anderson, Koshkam said, “I am so proud and pleased to have reached it this far. And to be eligible for bronze is more than I could have expected. I hope I did my family and my country proud here today.”

Zorasan’s first silver came in the Men’s Super-Heavyweight category. Mamad Mostofi, a one-time world champion in the category has since become a sensation in Zorasan. He defeated Shangea’s Zhang Cha 5-0, with a resilient and patient fight style, making much use of momentum at the ring’s edges. He went on to defeat Nuvania’s David Rush in one of the closest games of his sporting career, in his words. Rush landed numerous punches that seemed to destabilise Mostofi, even in one round Mostofi struggled to regain his rhythm after taking a succession of blows from the quicker Rush. In the final and deciding round, Mostofi regained himself and would land two successive heavy blows to Rush, sending him crashing to the floor. Mostofi claimed the round, defeating Rush 3-2. Moving onto his next match, Mostofi repeated his success against Jephté Gési, repeating his fight style used against Cha. Though the second round, Gési recovered and struck point scoring blows against Mostofi, relying on speed and his ability to outflank Mostofi, though ultimately the Zorasani’s strength and resilience overpowered the Garamburan. With a 4-1 victory over Gési, Mostofi moved onto to fight Emessa’s Mose Saccasan in played as a repeat of their 2020 World Championship fight. Saccasan who is the closest to Mostofi in terms of weight and build secured the first round, outpacing Mostofi and landing blows faster than Mostofi could parry. Though seemingly Saccasan’s reliance on speed wore him out and was steadily beaten back and down by Mostofi over the next four rounds.

In the deciding match for gold Mostofi faced the Cassien Renier Ge, who had displayed a dominating talent in each of his matches. Notably, knocking out Eldmark’s Leo Gylling. The question on this match would be whether Mostofi’s now globally known resilience could hold up against Ge’s immense strength and power. The opening round saw Mostofi come out striking hard, relying on a patience that enabled him to land heavy but selective blows, his ability to work through Ge’s defence and misplaced strikes gave indications this may be a gold for Zorasan. However, Ge was quick to adapt with the second round and repeatedly broke through Mostofi’s own defence to land major point scoring blows. Even as Mostofi took blows bloodied and off-balance he remained on his feet and retaliated with select blows, but sadly for the 32-year-old native of Bandar Sattari, it was not meant to be. Ge would seize the gold on points, winning 4-1 against Mostofi.

Mostofi’s humility and resilient playstyle has earned him millions of fans and followers across Zorasan. He told UCTV after the podium, “I am so humbled to receive a silver medal at the Invictus games. I dedicate this award to my family, to my brothers in the ring, to my friends and to our Union. Renier was a formidable force and I applaud him for his win. But I am so grateful for this moment.”

Football anticipation

The surprise success of Zorasan’s under-23s in the men’s football has sparked fascination across the Coian country. The Zorasani team has reached the quarterfinals, the furthest the country has progressed in Invictus football. It is the only Coian country left standing in the tournament also, something that has further fuelled excitement across Zorasan.

Led by the captain of Zahedan Parishahr FC’s under-23 team, the youthful men have captivated fans, with the names of the team reaching the highest rankings of internet searches back home. Even if the team is knocked out tomorrow, they will return home to a country proud of how far they went, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

The Zorasani team defeated Hennehouwe, a powerhouse of Euclean football 1-0 in one of the first shocks of the Invictus Games. The goal by Massoud Karimi at the 23rd minute stunned both sides and despite fierce attempts by the Hennish to claw back the goal difference, they were repulsed by a stalwart Zorasani defence. Repeatedly, the Hennish counter-attacked but the Zorasani team held off until the final whistle.

Boosted by their surprise win, the Zorasani team took on Azure Coast and would deal a heavy blow, defeating them 4-0, with two goals in each half. The Zorasani team held possession of the ball with tenacity and innovation. This playstyle would be repeated against Lavana with a 2-0 victory, delivering the Zorasani team their quarterfinal place.

The team now eagerly awaits its quarterfinal match.
