100 YEARS LATER - VERLOIS WELCOMES YOU BACK!

On behalf of the International Invictus Organising Committee, the City of Verlois is proud and ecstatic to return after a century as a host of the Invictus Games. We welcome the talented athletes of the world, the dedicated scores of fans who will travel across the globe, and the exalted dignitaries of all nations to the XXIX Summer Invictus Games. Verlois, the Queen, the City of the Flowers, has rejoiced at the honour to re-host after one-hundred long years. She is proud to host a competition that exhibits some of the best of humanity: our love for friendly competition, our celebration of sporting achievement, our unity in games of skill and strength, our capability to be united in the celebration of ourselves as old records are broken and new ones set.

It is an understatement to say that we are honoured; but our city and nation are indeed honoured to invite you here for the duration of this titan of an event! Over the next few weeks, we hope you will find us accommodating as we present to you what is the greatest sporting event in the history of the world. So, with baited breath, welcome, once again to Verlois, where athletes shall compete for the honour and glory of their peers, their predecessors, their nations and themselves.

To you, we welcome you all!

And to the Games, Verlois welcomes you back!

Sincerely,

The Verlois Organizing Committee of the Summer Invictus and Summer Para-Invictus Games

All Aboard! Team Hennehouwe travel to Verlois

Image
REPORTING:
Louisa Harmann

Team Hennehouwe's Verlois 2022 journey officially began today, with this morning's departure of the delegation by rail from s'Holle.

The HSW special train service, decked in a red and yellow Team Hennehouwe livery, departed from the capital's Centraal Station at 11:00 this morning, arriving in Verlois later in the afternoon. Beforehand, a well-wishing ceremony took place at s'Holle City Hall, co-hosted by Mayor-Governor Marijne Tijhoff and Sports Minister Nadea Malherbe.

Some 292 athletes are in line to represent Hennehouwe at the Verlois Invictus Games, which get officially underway next Sunday. It is the highest athlete total in the country's history, surpassing the previous record of 274 athletes at the s'Holle Games of 1904.

Football leads the tally of Hennish athletes, with forty-four - largely attributed to the qualification of both the men's and women's teams to the Invictus tournament. The vast athletics programme accounts for Team Hennehouwe's second-largest contingent at 42, whilst 38 Hennish rowers will take to the Invictus regatta. Hennehouwe's most successful Invictus sport, cycling, sees nineteen athletes competing, with the same number of Hennish athletes expected to compete in swimming events.

Hennehouwe's record-breaking Invictus contingent also contains some individual history makers. Among them is seventeen-year-old Lana Willems of the national eSports team who will be the first openly nonbinary Hennish athlete to compete at the Games. The title of Team Hennehouwe's youngest athlete goes to rising gymnast Evy Martens, who turned 15 just last month.

On board the HSW special included some of Hennehouwe's prime medal contenders. As expected, the main hopes lie in cycling and rowing, though there are a number of strong individual challengers in other sports. Cyclist Jasper Aerts will be hoping to defend his double Invictus title in both the Men's keirin and team sprint events, following on from the euphoric high of two Gold medals at Spálgleann 2018. Also hoping to defend their title are the rowing quartet of Nerea Aurelio, Sara de Meyer, Melanie Goeminne and Karin Moren in the women's fours event.

Other names to watch include Elias Abey Bayissa, who will take to the track in the men's 5000- and 10000-metre events. The Hennish men's gymnastics team, fresh from their bronze medal at the World Championships in February, will also hope to challenge for a medal. In marathon swimming, former world champion Annemijn van der Burg will attempt to overturn the heartbreak of narrowly missing a medal in Spálgleann in the women's event.

The Games officially kick off on Sunday, though the football tournaments begin two days in advance on Friday. Both Hennish teams have already been in Verlois and Maredoux for some days prior to the arrival of the main Hennish Invictus contingent.

HNO announce details of 'biggest ever' coverage of Invictus Games

Ahead of the start of the Games, HNO have unveiled their plans for their coverage of Verlois 2022, promising viewers unprecedented access to the highs and lows of the world's greatest sporting event.

The Opening and Closing ceremonies will be broadcast live on the broadcaster's main channel, De Eerste. Beyond that, three channels will be devoted to full-scale coverage of the Games. HNO's main coverage will be through De Tweede, with updates, news, interviews and highlights from sunrise to sunset, as well as live coverage of Hennish athletes in action. HNO Sport and HNO Sport Extra, the latter created from the soon-to-be-defunct De Andere channel, will broadcast straight coverage of events uninterrupted, beginning with the group matches in the football tournaments next Friday.

Nelke de Jager and Sij Veldhuizen will lead HNO's coverage from a specially-built studio near the Confluence Quarter in the heart of Verlois. "I'm incredibly excited for the Games to get going," de Jager said at today's press conference. "There's no show like the Invictus Games, and there's already such a buzz around the city. We've been promised nothing short of a spectacular few weeks by the organisers, and we can promise viewers the same."

There will be wall-to-wall coverage online, with additional streams available to watch live via streaming service HNO Nu. The broadcaster's radio services will also keep listeners informed on the latest news and results from Verlois.

The Games will also mark a historic moment for HNO, with the launch of its first linear service of ultra high definition 4K broadcasts. HNO UHD will air live coverage of both Opening and Closing ceremonies as well as select events over the three weeks of the Games. The new channel is now available to terrestrial viewers in s'Holle, Zilverzee and Central Flamia, as well as nationally via cable and satellite.

HNO has also announced details of a partnership with youth-orientated television network ONYX, to which it will sublicence full coverage of the Invictus eSports tournament. The deal will allow the small broadcaster to show the inaugural Invictus event live and in full, including the finals. "eSports has been a huge part of our remit over the past few years, and its significance worldwide is exemplified by its inclusion at the Games," remarked Head of Marketing at ONYX, Yohan Coppens. "Our partnership with HNO will allow us to bring the Invictus eSports tournament to a massive audience, which is a win-win for everyone involved."

Coverage of the Verlois 2022 Invictus Games begins next week across HNO.

First athletes arrive in Verlois

VERLOIS, GAULLICA - Nuvania's first athletes have arrived in Verlois early this morning ahead of the official opening of the 2022 Invictus Games onboard a chartered NLM flight from Pietersburg. The flight is one of three to be operated by the airline that will fly the athletes, support staff, and chosen family members, to Verlois.

Most of those onboard the flight were athletes whose tournaments began before the official opening ceremony begins, including both the men's and women's rugby sevens teams, the men's Invictus football team. Coaching staff, other officials, other athletes, and selected family members were also onboard the flight.

Men's seven's team captain. Shawn Taylor, said that the team was looking to better their bronze medal at the 2018 Games in Spálgleann, after losing the quarter finals to Estmere. The men's squad remains the same for Nuvania at this games, and fresh off sevens victories in Jindao and Keisi, Taylor said the team was willing to get "stuck in".
"We're ready," he said. "We've got a good squad, we've got some good games behind us, we're pumped and ready to go." Taylor said that the team would be getting into training soon after arriving in Verlois, in preparation for their first pool match on July 9.

Women's team captain Saskia Steyn said that the women's seven's squad was also excited to get going after their successes in the women's tournament. While they lost the final match in Keisi to Satavia, Steyn said the team was eager not to repeat the mistakes made during the 2018 Games, in which the women's team was bundled out of the competition in pool play.

Steyn is the only veteran of the 2018 Games left on the team, with the remainder of the squad composed of younger players who have been selected since then. These include the van der Walt sisters, Ava and Melissa, who are part of the starting seven. Steyn said that the performance of the team has "improved massively" over the last four years and she believes that the team has a real shot at a medal this time.
"The girls have come a long way since they first started and have played a lot of games," she said. "So they know what to do, how to play, and are also familiar with many of the teams in this year's competition."

Nuvania's highest ranked tennis player, Mia Samaratos, was one of the few athletes to fly in from a different destination, having travelled to Verlois from Alikianos, having vistited relatives in Piraea. Samaratos had previously played in tennis open tournaments in Morwall and Weisstadt in June and late May. She said that she was looking forwards to making her second appearance at the Invictus Games, after making it to the semi-finals in 2018. The world number 32 said she hoped she would better her 2018 result.
"I'd definitely like to get to the quarter finals or even be within a chance to win a medal," she said. "I know a few of the players have qualified so I'm at least familiar with them and their playing style."

With the games set to begin on July 11, most of the Nuvanian athletes competing are yet to arrive in Verlois, with the second charter flight arriving on July 10 and the third flight on July 13. The early flight allows time for athletes to acclimatise and become used to time zone differences, as well as hold training sessions, particularly for sports such as football and rugby.

It also allowed for on-location coverage of the games to begin from the media centre and from other locations around the Invictus venues, as a number of journalists were also present on the flight.

The initial pool matches for the rugby sevens teams and men's football teams will be livestreamed on NBC Sports on July 10, with delayed coverage of the first matches will be aired on NBC One. Flagship events, as well as events with Nuvanians participating will be aired live on NBC One where possible.

Vinalians arrive in Verlois for Invictus games.

The Vinalian 2022 Invictus team has begun arriving in Verlois, where the hopes of many Vinalians are at an all time high, following a decrease in medals between 2010 where Vinalians won 9 medals, and 2018 when they returned with 4 medals. Vinalians are hoping to avoid such a trend, and return home with their heads high. President Valeria Kunavin, a former Invictus Fencer herself who competed 20 years ago in Gaullica in 2002, will be joining the athletes and will attend both the opening and closing ceremonies.

Evhen Kohut who won gold in 2018, and a bronze in 2014 in Men's 10 m air rifle, will be the flag bearer for the country. He is leading a large delegation of Vinalian athletes. Konai Fedorov Vinalias most successful Invictus athlete will be attending the games as an official delegate from the Ministry of Sports, after having retired following the 2018 games, where he won a bronze medal. 2018 Silver medallist Erik Volotskogo whose unexpected victory 4 years ago, has inspired numerous individuals to take up the discipline of Athletic walk, and he leads a large delegation these games. Alfa Prohasko, captain of the Vinalian Womens Zadany team stated that the Vinalian team was ready to achieve success and glory, return Vinalia to the Zadany podium after disappointing finishes in 2018 and 2014.

Other athletes to watch out for include Kuvaka Marfin who won Bronze in 2018 in Men’s Freestyle Wrestling, the Stasiuk siblings Miroslava, and Kolomanwho are competing on both the mens and womens laser radial, Miroslava is on her 2nd games, while Koloman is making his debut. Olenka Shevchenko in Women's Judo Half-lightweight 48 - 52kg, on her 3rd and last games who is looking to improve on a 6th place in 2018. The Women’s Epee team led by Zoriana Mejicka bronze medallist in the individual in 2014 with two time Invictus athletes Julia Voshko and Sofiia Zyma, while Amelia Zelenko is making her debut. Bela Kravchik, the 2010 gold medallist in the Women’s Epee, has coached the Vinalian delegation for 2022, and will be in attendance. The couple of athletes Ozar Rikailo in the Men’s Keirin,
and Lili Sobol in the Women's 200m breaststroke who got married in 2021 having met in the 2018 games. Urpo Havrylyuk in the Artistic Gymnastics, who returns to the sport after having suffered an injury that derailed his 2018 participation. These and many stories await us during the next 3 weeks.

The 107 member delegation will partake in numerous events, all televised by HTK. While all events will be carried by Red Coast Medias Channel 3, and online reruns of events will exist in their website. Vinalians are excited for the return of the Summer Invictus games, and the schedule for both the 12th and 25th of July will see a full slot of Vinalians participating, and other incredible events.

NEWS|Hacyinian Invictus team lands in Verlois
69 athletes, led by Men’s Zadany team, hope to make big impact.
2022-07-0816:42:37Z

The Hacyinaian Invictus delegation landed at Verolis today, after having been seen off by Makbule Arda Khan personally at the Bakhchisaray. The 69 athlete delegation is the 2nd largest in it's history, and would have tied as the largest delegation is not for the last minute withdrawal of the Hacyinian Women's Rugby Sevens team for as of yet undisclosed reasons as well as the failure of the Hacyinian Womens Basketball team to qualify. The Hacyinian delegation is led by the Men's Zadnay captain Serik Aibek who will lead the team during the Opening Ceremony. The Hacyinian delegation is competing in a wide variety of sports, all of which the Hacyinian teams have competed in before.

The Hacyinian Zadnay athletes look to be medal contenders in the stacked Zadany competition. Some analysts argue that the rough and tumble nature of the Zadany team, drawn from Kokpar (translated to "goat grabbing", and perhaps better known as "horsebacked rugby" from numerous viral videos about the sport) players across the country, may not translate well to the Invictus setting. Other analysts argue the opposite and state that the Hacyinian Zadnay team brings a unique set of skills and experiences to the competition. Zadany team captain Uriangkadai Terbish said during his arrival interview "I think we're coming into the Zadany competition as underdogs. I think alot of the other teams here have underwrote us, thinking that we can't compete with some of the other teams. They're wrong, and once we're on the podium I'm sure social media won't be asking why a bunch of 'goat pulling savages' are here on the worlds largest stage." Terbish was referencing a recent social media controversy in which private social media accounts of other national Zadany athlethes were leaked that complained about the Hacyinian Zadany's playing style and compared Terbish's name to a slur with similar letters.

In addition to Zadnay, Hacyinia has sent a full roster of athletes for both Men's Boxing and Men's Wrestling competitions again as they chase further sporting glory in those arenas. The 86kg freestyle wrestler Saxan Taki stated "We hope to send a message that we are here to compete in boxing and wrestling. We're not backing down from the challenge of going up against these larger nations and we're hoping that we can start becoming an Invictus powerhouse that I know we can be."

The Men's Rugby Sevens team is looking to redeem Hacyinian Rugby, after Hacyinia failed to qualify for the most recent Rugby World Cup. As Men's Rugby Sevens Captain Murad Shamiloglu said, "To even qualify for Invictus Sevens is huge, especially after we didn't make it into the Rugby World Cup. Most of the team here plays for the fifteens team as well, so, we're looking to perform well. We want to put Hacyinian rugby on the map." The Rugby Sevens captain offered no comment on why the Women's Rugby Sevens team did not arrive to compete at Invictus.

Furthermore, Hacyinia Equestrianism and Cavaliering athletes have stated that they hope to showcase Hacyinian horsemanship to the world. "We're people of the steppe, regardless of where in Hacyinia you're from. We were riding horses before we could walk, I think we can perform well in these events" Qaljan Zhanbolatkyly stated, the lone Hacyinian Equestrian athlete. Other sports Hacyinia is competing in is Archery, Men's Basketball, Track, Cycling, Judo, and Weightlifting. The Hacyinian weightlifting team is notable for having the first Chanwan competitor in the countries entire Invictus history. In a short statement, the 63kg weightlifter Nilar Thawk Phyo stated "I'm honored to represent my country, and hope to make it proud."

State President Rahim Ali Haftar addresses Invictus Team
State President Ali Haftar tells the over 200 sportspeople, "I want you all to know that you go to Verlois with your people, your country and your party behind you every step of the way"

State President Rahim Ali Haftar talking to the National Football Team before the group photo.

State President Rahim Ali Haftar has address the Union’s Invictus Team ahead of this year’s games in Verlois. He told the sportsmen and women, “you go now with the hopes and faith of 210 million Zorasanis who trust in you to deliver greatness and glory to our Union. Go knowing your country stands behind you every step of the way.”

In the traditional address by the head of state to the Union’s Invictus team, the State President told the 200 hosted by him, “you represent the youth and vigour of our country. You are the representatives of the Zorasani people and with that comes great responsibility, not necessarily to secure gold at every turn, but act with dignity, professionalism and humility that has defined our sportspeople for generations. You are inspirations and heroes to millions.”
He said further, “Many of you competed in many fields during the Union Games, world championships and at each turn, proved yourselves worthy of adulation and respect. Your dedication, commitment and resilience will surely carry you through individually and as teams to success.”

He told the sportspeople that the nation was eagerly awaiting the games, “with each tournament we as a country rally and unite behind our sportspeople. Each triumph shared by millions, each fall felt but respected by millions. I want you all to know that you go to Verlois with your people, your country and your party behind you every step of the way. You have the eyes of millions upon you, but let that not pressure you, rather let that embolden you for as you jump the bar, throw the javelin or play the football pitch, you do so with the will and strength of millions behind you.”

“So go in confidence. For you go now with the hopes and faith of 210 million Zorasanis who trust in you and your ability to deliver greatness and glory to our Union. Go knowing your country stands behind you every step of the way. But also know should you return having fallen short of where you wished you would go, you do so to a nation proud” he told them, receiving applause from the Invictus Team.

As per tradition, the State President took part in a group photo with a particular team. This year the pleasure fell to the Union’s national football team, who took part in a photo on the steps of the Secretariat Building in Zahedan.
The Invictus Team will fly to Verlois tomorrow and this paper, like all Zorasani citizens, wish our team the best of luck and will backing them all the way regardless of result.

The Eldmarsk team has arrived in Verlois for the Invictus games! Crowds of loyal fans, who have traveled across the Vehemens to see the Eldmarsk teams bring home the gold! Before opening ceremonies begin, Men's and Women's Rugby Sevens teams were hard at work to advance their positions, where captains Sverker Malmsten and Simone Rosenquist have sat down to answer a couple questions with VI before they take on Rizealand and Cassier, respectively.

VI: "So what's it like, being here for the first time, both of you team captains?
SM: "It's fun, in a way. We get to do what we've done all our lives. We just gotta get into our element, focus on what's ahead, and just go out and play, you know? You can't be too stressed now, all the work is done, now it's time to play."
SR: "Much of the same, yeah. We can't let it get to us, we're here to represent Eldmark, and Eldmark is about doing its best."

Additionally, we reached out to the Eldmarsk tennis coach, Harald Fochs, who gave a statement before qualifiers.

"Everyone is excited, very electric here in Verlois. We love this city, we love playing in the Invictus Games, in my 34 years coaching I've never got used to just how amazing it feels, for me and for my players. We're out here to show the world our talent but we're also here as a reward in and of itself, I mean look at this place, these games make everyone feel like champions."

The Rowing and eSports teams, while not yet playing in the Invictus Games, reached out to VI for a word as well. Known for their great performance in previous games, the Rowing Teams, including three time single sculls medalist Theo Moller, described the feeling among the Rowing team as "determined and raring for action."

"We've trained an awfully long time, lot of hours put in to get this far. And we're just going to do our best, we haven't come this far to only go this far, if you know what I mean."

The eSports team, while not yet formed in time for the Avatar Championships last year, are now prepared for action this year on a world stage. Team picked from a cadre of Eldmarsk competitive streamers, including indie game developer Gunther Hansen, AKA GunthyWunthy, the Avatar competitive team is poised to prove themselves where they couldn't a year before.

"We're a bit sore on that, yeah, but we're cut from a different cloth, built differently. We'll show them what we're made of. Respectfully, of course."

We will be following the events as they happen, stay tuned to VI or our media associates at E1!

Cerqueira receives Tennis team uniform

Verlois, Gaullica: Premier Cerqueira spoke with the Paretian Invictus Team today in Precea. She was given the chance to be there to give a speech before the team left on a train to Verlois.

She stated "Today you will arrive in Verlois, a magnificent city of great love and beauty, the capitol of the wonderful nation of Gaullica. This beautiful city will be your venue to show off your skills and make the Paretian people, be it Luzelese, Tosuton, Esmeiran, or Visegan, proud by bringing home new victories and spectacles that will be remembered for years to come."

"Many Paretians will surely be in the crowd of course, we are Gaullica's neighbors after all. But there will be millions of us watching here, watching this spectacle that is the Invictus Games. Watching you and your fellow teammates bring home bronze, silver, and especially gold. One thing I wish for is that you inspire millions of our younger generations to dream of becoming great athletes like you, and become great winners too. Before you go off on this train to Verlois I will leave you with this wish of luck and a prayer that you will succeed in what you do best. Acima Paretia!" She told the Invictus team.

Premier Cerqueira met with the team and they spoke afterwards, both the Tennis team and Football team awarded Premier Cerqueira each with a uniform, the football one with her name on it and the number 22, for 2022, the one form the tennis team is that of tennis player Rodolf Turro. The team then went onto the train and sent off to Verlois as preparations for the opening ceremony begin. They arrived in Verlois later in the day and have begun their preparations for the opening ceremony.

RMP will be following all of the events live on our main channel as well as RMP Sports. Be sure to tune into RMP News for other news pertaining to the Invictus Games.

2022 SUMMER INVICTUS GAMES OPENING CEREMONY: LIVE!

Image

19:30 - We are live from the Parc de la Terre d'Or, in the centre of Verlois! Before us is a cavalcade like none other; as between city and nature and before the impressive stature of Chrétien Tower, we find individuals preparing for the beginning of the Opening Ceremony! Spectators and fans from not only Gaullica but around the world have begun to filter into the park, with some die-hard fans having been camped out here since last night, to ensure themselves a place at the thousands of seats, stands and places available. The ceremony is due to begin at 21:00.
19:41 - Even though the ceremony is not due to start for over an hour, the atmosphere here is intense. Fans from across the world are mingling and sampling the hospitality Verlois has to offer. We've scarcely seen an individual who is not clutching at a tasty snack of pomme frites, jambom-beurres and other delights. This is of course to not even mention the drinks; with local beer, wine and spirit producers hoping to advertise themselves across the world.
20:15 - The final runner of the Invictus Torch relay has entered the Parc de la Terre d'Or. Whilst in many years a particular highlight is given to the athlete who will light the torch, here at Verlois 2022 the entire relay team has been celebrated. Together they have mimicked the route that was done exactly 100 years ago. From Solaria to Sagrado to Carxeri to Faulia the torch has retraced its historic steps, with onlookers all the way, as the relay-runners completed a historic monument of sport -- running through the paths of the Aventines to reach Gaullica. Arriving in Monroial it entered Côte Serene before makings its way west, across all large cities from Thorailles to Rayenne, snacking north to Aimargues and Maredoux before triumphantly arriving at the Queen of Cities, The Gaullican Flower, Verlois.
21:00 - Salut et bienvenue! Hello! Salve! Bon retour, welcome back! This is what we say to all the fans, the Invictus Spirit and the Games themselves, 100 years later! We are here at Verlois, Gaullica, the host of the XXIXth Summer Invictus Games! This year's games will feature competitors from 74 countries and teams competing against one another in the name of sport, competitiveness and glory for themselves, their families and their nations as they seek the coveted gold Invictus medals. To begin the evening, to begin the Ceremony, we welcome a rendition of the Chant des Gaullois performed by the Verlois Symphony Orchestra alongside the raising of the Gaullican flag.
21:04 - A magnificent performance that will only set the tune to come! We thank the Verlois Symphony Orchestra with all our hearts as they pay homage to the athletes, our nation and what will be the most impressive Invictus Games so far!
21:05 - We move on to the artistic performances that celebrate athletes, the fans and the Games! Joining us here at the Parc tonight are renowned singers, dancers and performers from across Gaullica, featuring the likes of noted singers Violaine Rousseau and Georges Dior, amongst others. A display of lights and dancing from noted performers Cirque du Clair de Lune is scheduled as well. Finally, a respectful homage highlighting the sporting achievement of the Games 100 years ago, in the light of the tragedy that built them up -- the Parti Populaire is to be held as what we've been told as a 'sort-of-play' through the medium of song and dance. Athletes, we have been told, are "key" in these performances, as men and women from across dancing clubs, gymnastic clubs and even sports such as football, have been incorporated with the performances.

21:25 - The festivities come to a close and the Parc erupts in a flurry of lights from phones and cheers from the spectators! Thank you, the World, for this honour! We ask that you settle down as we prepare for the illustrious Parade of Nations!
21:27 - The screens situated around the Parc are lit up with an opening introduction animation message from the Head of the Gaullican Invictus Commitee, thanking those in attendance, and signalling the beginning of the Parade of Nations.
21:30 - With the appearance of the flags hoisted by athletes, the crowds at the Parc are elated. A fanfare of joyous, raucous cheering and clapping echoes across all of Verlois, for sure:

As always, leading the Parade in honour of its foundings, Etruria emerges onto the green. At their forefront is the famed foil fencer Augustino Endrizzi, lofting the red, white and black of the Etrurian nation. Cheers erupt once again from the crowd.

23:01 - Bravo! Wonderful! With a stupendous Parade of Nations complete, we have speeches from the President of the Organising Committee and the President of the International Invictus Committee.
23:14 - "...it is with great privilege that we end this talk by thanking those of you who have travelled from all over, those of you who are watching at home, those of you competing, those of you who have come out to celebrate -- sport, solidarity -- that this would never be possible without you. I now pass you on to the President of Gaullica, Madame Monique Degar-Abdulrashid." says ICC President Prospero D'Agosta.
23:15 - "Thank you, President D'Agosta. It brings me great joy to be where I stand. I am honoured and humbled in the presence of sporting giants. And I am honoured to be representing this great nation, this great republic, at this level. It has been 100 years since the games last past through here, and the world, and Gaullica, have changed dramatically since then. The last time you were here, we were sad to see you go -- but now, we tell you, the world, 'welcome back'. As the President of Gaullica, I hereby declare the XXIXth Summer Invictus Games of Verlois open!" The applause is reverberating; truly a speech held around the world -- and Verlois is certainly not getting any sleep tonight! The end of the President's remarks are finalised by a display of fireworks; a beautiful cascade of colours that light up the sky -- the Parc and Chrétien Tower, too -- in a brilliant display. The coordination is excellent, and even flags of nations erupt into the sky, in an order identical to the Parade of Nations. The final flag, Gaullica's, is marked also by the words "Bon Retour" lighting up the heavens.
23:20 - The Invictus flag is paraded horizontally towards the unlit cauldron at the centre of the Parc, and as it comes to a halt the Invictus Hymn is played.
23:23 - The Hymn's end is marked by applause and cheers. The Invictus Organiser returns to the microphone, declaring that it is time for the cauldron to be lit. "To light the torch this year is two time pentathlon gold medallist, Étienne Barre, a true titan of sport -- a Renaissance Man for the sporting world! He can run, he can swim, he can shoot, he can ride, Barre, the hour is yours!"
23:25 - Arriving at the cauldron, Barre takes the torch in hand and lowers it to the base of the Invictus Cauldron. It does not take long for the flame to burst into radiant fire and light the cauldron. From the Suns of Solaria to the Cauldron in Verlois, it has had quite the journey! The crowd cheers in joy and elation -- "Welcome to Verlois, 2022! And to the Games, as always, we say 'Bon Retour'!" is but one remark heard from the commentators.
23:30 - The symbolic doves of peace are released to highlight the union of mankind in this event, and for peace during the Games.
23:30 - 00:00 - As the crowds begin to disperse as the ceremony comes to a close, key figures and dignitaries are seen amongst sections of the Parc. Weranian Premier Raicevich is spotted along President Degar-Abdulrashid and Etrurian President Francisco Carcaterra, whilst Shangean Foreign Minister Jiang Zhongyu is seen in conversation with other dignitaries. Members of the Caldish royal family are spotted having a discussion with former President Jean Vallette and Euclean Community President Nic Ualtair, whilst other dignitaries and representatives talk among themselves. Valeria Kunavin, President of Vinalia, is keenly spotted -- a former Invictus Fencer in her own right, it was sure she would be at the games. And these are but a small selection of the assembled dignitaries!

00:00 - It is now Day 1 of the Invictus Games! How time flies! On behalf of Verlois, of Gaullica and the Invictus Committee, we thank you all once again! We hope that the greatest sporting tournament in the world is everything you hope it is!

Verlois 2022 Wrap Up: Mixed results for first day of competition
SHARE: Image Image Image Image
Gemma Black (@GemmaBlack)
July 11, 2022 (1:10pm)

VERLOIS, GAULLICA - Nuvanian athletes have already been in action at the 2022 Invictus Games before the opening ceremony has begun, with basketball, football, rugby, and tennis tournaments underway.

While Nuvania is not competing in the basketball tournament, the men's and women's football teams were in action today, as were four Nuvanians competing in the men's singles, women's singles, and men's doubles. Also in action were the men's and women's sevens teams.

Football
Nuvania's football teams saw mixed success in pool play today with the men's football team failing to progress out of pool play while the women's team managed to qualify for the round of 16 top of their pool. The men's squad found themselves in an all Asteria Inferior pool with Adamantina and Aucuria, all teams that many of the players would be familiar with in regional competitions. The first match the Invictus team played was against Adamantina, with the end result seeing Nuvania emerge victorious, winning 1-0. A hard fought match, the Adamantine team putting up a much bigger challenge than the Nuvanians were expecting, although much could be said of the missed opportunities Nuvania had during the first half. Striker Izak de Vries would seal the game for Nuvania in the 49th minute with a spectacular shot from his right boot into the Adamantine net.

The second match would not go nearly as well for the men's team, facing neighbours Aucuria in the third and final pool match. Aucuria, having also dispatched Adamantina 3-1 in the second pool match of Group H, came into the game against Nuvania with a lot of confidence, which was reinforced by a display of tactical brilliance that caught the Nuvanian team off guard, with Aucurian midfielder Samijuqas Tumėpampas managed to break through the Nuvanian defence and score the opening goal of the match in the 12th minute. Although Nuvania attempted to break through in the latter part of the first half, the Aucurian defence held strong, and eventually the Aucurians again would break through with striker Algirdas Abrutis, leaving it until the 38th minute to score their second and final goal. Nuvania would come out swinging in the second half, looking to at least equalise Aucuria. Although de Vries would be called upon again to perform the same heroics as he had played in the match against Adamantina, it would not come to pass. Midfielder Luca de Klerk, subbed on to replace Isaac King in the 45th minute, would score Nuvania's only goal of the match in the 74th minute. Although more attempts would be made, the men's team would not progress beyond the pool matches. Team captain Cory Miller said that the team did their best but the Aucurians "just played better."
"I mean, what more can you say?" he said. "We did the best that we could. Sure, we made some mistakes, but the Aucurians won and we didn't."

For the women's team, their success was unexpected, with the team finishing at the top of Pool J and qualifying for the round of 16. Their first match against Kuthina saw them win 2-1 amid a skilled performance against one of the better Coian teams. Left-midfielder Rozane Becker opened the scoring in the 34th minute after several attempts at the Kuthinan goal with a header following a much needed corner throw, allowing Nuvania to lead 1-0 at half time. Kuthina sought to equalise in the second half with a series of repeated runs against the Nuvanian goal. Nuvania's defence finally yielded in the 61st minute with another header from another corner, with Kuthina now equal. As the minutes ticked down, Nuvania found another gear and charged to the opposite end of the field, with striker Sophia Cooper well placed to boot the ball past the Kuthinan goalkeeper for Nuvania's second and final goal in the 73rd minute.

The second pool match saw a much greater challenge initially, as Ardesia had also managed to overcome Kuthina 3-2 in their pool match. What followed was quite possibly the strongest performance ever demonstrated by a Nuvanian football team. Against an Ardesian side that looked at times like the players were asleep at the wheel, the Nuvanians opened the scoring within the first minute, with a run down to the Ardesian goal and a belter into the back of the net by Cooper. She would then follow up with a successful penalty kick awarded after the first foul of the match as the Ardesians scrambled to defend. Another successful run saw fellow striker Emilia Fisher put another belter in the back of the net. With half time on the clock, the Nuvanians were leading Ardesia 3-0. To add insult to injury, Ardesia went down two players in quick succession in the second half following another scrambled defence. This reduction lead to another two goals scored by Nuvania, Cooper getting a third goal to complete a hat trick and captain Alicia Mason being well placed to score yet another header. The final nail in the proverbial coffin came for Ardesia in the 59th minute, Annalie van den Berg scoring a surprise goal from just under halfway to round out what was a game to forget for the Ardesian side.

Team captain Alicia Mason said that the win and finish at the top of Pool J was a "complete surprise" and said that the team was "extremely excited" to continue on their campaign in the round of 16.
"I think both games have shown that we're no longer a side that can be dismissed," she said. "We can come out and dominate games and that's something that we've not really been able to do before."

Rugby
Nuvania's most successful teams so far in the 2022 Games have been the men's and women's rugby sevens teams, both of whom made it through to their respective semi-finals.

Nuvania's men's team got off to a good start by bumping out their long time rivals Satavia in pool play before taking on Ansan in the round of 16, making short work of them. They will now face surprise semi-finalists Sohar to book a spot in the quarter finals, where they'll then face whoever wins the semi-final match between Chistovodia and Soravia.

The women's team had much more success, dominating Scovern in pool play and easily pushing past Garambura in the round of 16. They now face Cassier in the semi-finals and will likely face Rwizikuru in the quarter finals, unless Soravia can pull an upset victory over the Bahian team.

Men's team captain Shawn Taylor said that the team was confident about their campaign so far, with the semi-finals looking to be a mixture of teams that normally do well in sevens competitions and teams that have "surprised him".
"I'm not really sure how we ended up having to play Sohar," he said. "But hey, kudos to them for getting this far."

Women's team captain Saskia Steyn said that the women's squad was "quietly confident" about their chances for a medal this year, saying that the previous performance was "out of the minds of everyone now."
"I think we've proven the critics wrong," she said. "We're just as strong as any other team and we'll hopefully translate that into a medal."

Tennis
Nuvania's tennis players had mixed success as well. World number 32 Mia Samaratos faced off against world number five and home favourite Tatiana Bourgeois. Samaratos would get the match off to a dominating start, winning the first set six-love, prompting Bourgeois to respond in the second set with an equally dominant performance, winning the second set 6-1. Samaratos rallied for the final set over the next hour and a half to force three match points before finally conceding the final set 7-5. Despite the loss, Samaratos said it was one of her best performances, helped by the fact that both players had encoutered each other at the Morwall Open in early June in the semi-finals in which she put up a similar performance. She said that higher ranked players always bring out the best performances and said she was looking forwards to possibly meeting Bourgeois again on the courts in Keisi later this year.
"I think we've got a good chance that we'll meet again," she said. "She's a fantastic player, this is a home crowd, so, yeah. I am a bit disappointed, I gave it my best, but she is the much better player, so she deserves the win."

Ranking didn't seem to matter for Alex Rosselli, who is now through to the semi-finals having competed in three matches to earn himself a spot in the semi-finals. Ranked 58, Rosselli had to win his preliminary match against Adamantine x in order to progress to the round of 32. Rosselli did so in straight sets, winning both 6-2. His second match would be against Amathian world number 31 Pavel Chiriţă, where it would be a much tougher prospect. Despite winning the first set six-love, Rosselli would lose the second set to Chiriţă 6-3. Rosselli would recover and rally in the final set to win 6-2. Rosselli's round of 16 match would be a surprisingly quick affair despite playing Weranian x, who is ranked 19th in men's tennis, winning the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-2 to progress to the semi-finals. He's now set to play Kirenian Tauno Pärn in what will be a make-or-break match for Rosselli.

But Rosselli is not letting the pressure get to him. Despite exceeding expectations, Rosselli said that he was looking forwards to the match against Pärn in the semi-final. He said he can't remember the last time he played against the Kirenian apart from the fact it was "some time ago".
"He's still a good player so it's not going to be easy," he said. "I've got a good match ahead of me."

Men's doubles players Liam Rogers and Jacques le Roux managed to win their preliminary match against Soravia, although the pairing of x and x did not make it easy for them. While Rogers and le Roux won the opening set 6-2, the Soravians pulled it back in the second set to win 7-5. Both the Nuvanians then showed a touch more skill in the third set, winning 6-4. From there, it was onto the Ardesian pair of x and x and much like the Soravian match, it would be hard fought. While Rogers and le Roux won the opening set 6-2, they lost the following sets 6-0 and 6-4.
