As he sipped from his wine, he briefly glanced again at the bonfires. “So, Sofía, what do you do in Providencia? In our side of the world we don’t much of our distant Habsburg cousins.”

Despite their parents not being close – Munib’s father and Baahir’s mother came from different wives of the late Emir Muhsin – the two had met on some events within the international crowd that they frequented. The young sheikh was on his last year at a Braslander boarding school, and quite eager to see more of the world. As he walked across the gardens, he looked around to find his cousin.

“Munib!” Baahir said, offering his cousin his hand. “It is good to see you again.” He shook his head. “I am sorry; I did not see your message. I am not on WhatsApp so much since I got my new Peacock phone.” He turned and gestured towards Tahira. “You remember our cousin, Tahira.”
Tahira smiled and bowed her head slightly, remembering not to offer her more observant cousin her hand.
“And our cousin Thomas will be here soon.” Baahir grinned. “Tahira is waiting for him to introduce her to Crown Princess Elizabeth.” Baahir turned fully back to Munib. “How have you been? How is school in Brasland going?”

“Excuse me, cousin,” Tahira said to Baahir, then, bowing to Munib she added, “Your Excellency, but I think I see cousin Thomas; I should go greet him.”
Baahir nodded. “Tell him that I’ll greet him later.”
Tahira smiled and walked away.
Turning back to Munib, Baahir said, “I also rather fancy Caldan girls.” He smiled. “And, of course, Bartlet University is quite a good school.”

Having a head start on the bodyguards, Baahir followed the path Munib had taken into the woods. “Munib,” he called out, “cousin!”
He felt a pang of guilt for… being so insensitive… exulting in his freedom without thinking about his cousin’s far more circumscribed life.
“Munib, let’s discuss this. I didn’t know things were so… difficult for you. Maybe I can help you.”
