The Setting

January 6th, 1910. Some call it the day of Revelations, but most think of it as the day the masks first appeared. Masks, each one unique, and each one lending the person wearing them grand power. Thousands appeared in seemingly random locations in the presence of people around the world. The people who found them, and put them on discovered the grand power they possess, as well as the noticeable toll they take. In exchange for the unique power the person gains, they lose the ability to speak. Capable instead, only of communication through telepathic means, these mask wearing few were dubbed with the name, Silents. And every day, new Silents find their masks. The numbers growing, and with them, chaos. Some people carry their mask like most normal humans carry a pistol. It’s a good weapon to keep nearby for self protection. But some, as with all things, use their powers for their own more nefarious purposes. So is the way of the world of The Silent Veil: Apocrypha!

This is the second installment in the Silent Veil story, though it is not a sequel. It is a new story, set in another universe within this grander world. This story takes place in the big apple, New York City. You will create a character who will be part of a team of people who by happenstance come together to combat a great evil permeating throughout the sprawling and growing city. Art Deco has taken over architecture. The snowfall of December 1923 coats the ground in the think blanket of snow. And the city itself has a calm peaceful facade. But, there is always a darkness underneath every light.

Silents are still a relatively new phenomenon to the world. Little is fully known about them to the people in general. Only that they are rare and dangerous. As such few non Silent people tend to be distrustful, if not down right discriminatory against Silent individuals. Police and politicians often let their fear drive their treatment of Silents. And some nations, such as the United Kingdom, are down right oppressive against anyone with a mask. America though, remains a bastion of freedom. Despite societal distaste, there are as of yet no laws or discriminatory practices leveled against Silents. But, this is the 1920’s. A time when the whole world is set to change. And how it changes might just be up to you.

The Story

How your character finds themselves in NYC is entirely up to you. But, once there, they will soon learn of the man behind the bright lights of the city. Patrick Facile, the owner of the Bryant Park Hotel, is a man of formidable power. Politically, financially, and in terms of otherworldly abilities as well. He, as well as many of his business associates have their tendrils wrapped around the city tightly, controlling things to their benefit and often to the detriment of the people. And if that were not enough, people have begun disappear near and within the hotel. Disappearing for purposes unknown. The goal of this story is simple, discover where the missing people have gone, and attempt to fight against the reach and power of Mr. Facile. How you do so, is entirely your decision. Are you a lone wolf, looking to seek revenge? Or maybe a unifier, hoping to bring people together for a powerful front? However you intend to proceed, know that Patrick Facile is the greatest of threats this world has known. And if you misstep, you might not survive to see his defeat.

The Rules

1. No meta gaming or godmodding. This one is obvious.
2. OP's word is law. I'm an open guy and like people to have their freedom but you gotta respect that if I say no it means no.
3. Respect other players both in the forum and on discord. Needless insults will get you kicked.
4. PVP elements must be agreed upon by both parties, and will be decided by joint participant agreement, supplemented by OP intervention when no agreement can be made.
5. All powers have drawbacks. No one just gets free strength. The stronger your power, the stronger the limitation you need to provide with it
6. Sadly, there are some banned powers, done so for the sake of making an interesting story/world that won't be exploited. This list is not exhaustive and can be added to at any time. Mind Control, control of subatomic particles, Time travel, omniscience.

Character history: Born in Vermont, Sam was a simple church boy who grew up near a maple grove. His father worked the grove, and his mother played the organ for the church. Life was simple but enjoyable. At 18 Sam set himself to work at the local cannery. It was hard work, for unfair pay. But it was steady, consistent, and reliable. Or so he thought. One day nearly every major business in his quiet New England town was bought up by the same man, Patrick Facile. It didn't seem like an issue at first. New owner just meant a new boss. But after about of month, seemingly the moment the ink was truly dry, the cannery was shut down. The Maple grove was sold off to be cut for lumber. Even the local market was torn down to be sold as a blank lot. It felt like the Patrick Facile was dead set to tear the town down to its studs. He even managed to buy the town's church and get that shut down as well. The pastor promised to build a new one with the money he earned from the sale. But so little property of the town was left to buy that he wasn't able to ever rebuild. choosing to start a new parish far away instead.

This all tore Sam's family apart. his parents began to resent each other. Sam became a burden on them, unable to find work. The town he had grown up in and loved, was all but dead. And it was when he was at his lowest that he found a a polished, carved jade mask resting above his mantle. He was confused about its origins. But he had suspicions of it. He had heard stories of people finding masks in strange places, and those masks offering great power to their owners. Her cautious put it on his face and felt the power flow through him. The flowing power nearly ended up burning his house down in the process. thankfully he stopped it before it spread beyond his room. But he was no longer worried about his room. He felt like his mask was a gift from the almighty. A tool to be used to make right what was done to his town and his family. A tool to be used to deliver divine judgement on Patrick Facile. With his resolve renewed, he set off for the city of New York. Ready to start a new life, and to fix what that man has broken.

Personal goals: deliver judgement on Patrick Facile. Start a new life in NYC. Help his family rebuild his home town.
Silent Power (if applicable): Hardlight Constructs. Can create almost anything he can imagine out of tangible light particles. These particles erupt as they release their energy, creating sizable explosions.
Limitation/drawback: Limited by his imagination, an inherently destructive power as anything he creates will explode over a period of time, he does not control how long until they explode, that is controlled by the size of the object. smaller is faster. if he creates something and holds on for too long he can be hurt by the blast.

Name: Agares Hawthorne
Age: 76
Nation of birth: America
Silent?: Yes
Occupation: Mining Company Owner
Moral Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 82 kg
Appearance:

Character history:
Agares Hawthorne's life is a simple one, marked by a long life of labor and a wish for a stable lifetime. He was born into a large family of eight, and his education consisted of an elementary and high school diploma. In his mind his family is a duty he must attend to, and thus he worked dilligently to bring income into his family.

The man worked in manual labor, first as a construction worker and finally a miner. The work is difficult and rife with danger, but with its risks he is rewarded by better pay. With each drop of sweat and physical strain, he pushed many of his siblings' education further than his own and he managed to bring the essentials to the table of his home.

Of course, the life of a miner is full of dangers and soon those dangers would catch up to the man. He had already worked long enough in the mines he has gotten himself in to be a lead miner of a group, and a new system has opened up in the caverns below. With pickaxes, explosives, and load bearing pillars in tow, Agares' group dived into the mine shafts for further exploration and to set up new mining sites within.

One wrong explosive set the course of the rest of his life. It was set at a wrong side of the tunnels, pressed against a rock wall containing combustive gases underneath. It set off a grand explosion that brought the tunnels down, burying the miners underneath rubble and rock.

The incident left the man injured, his left leg broken and twisted. Some of his men were buried beneath the rubble for all eternity, while some suffered the same disabling injuries as he did. At age 48, Agares was discharged from service in the mines he worked in and was sent into early retirement.

For over a decade and a half, the man stayed at his home. The doctors tried to restore his leg and his ability to walk but he could only walk with the aid of a cane, and even still it is with limping difficulty. His investment that was his body is invalidated for many years as the man stayed idle. He could never work again with his legs in such a state. He has already bought a well-off life already with his efforts, but his career has been cut too short. Agares thought that for the next decades this would be his life, wasting away what is left of his already fleeting youth, until the miracle of the Silent Masks came to be a decade ago.

His came to existence during another same boring day, as it has been for days before. Agares has been going through memorabilias and personal effects, digging through boxes and shifting through items of emotional significance. And then did it appear: an iron mask of a fierce beast hidden amongst knick knacks. It was odd. He cannot remember any time with which he has ever bought nor received such a curious mask. But it was alluring, for some reason. How the light bends around each curve, how each surface shines, it beckons to him. With nothing to do, Agares lifted the mask to his face with the simple curiosity to see if it even fits.

The mask fits. Snugly. Even perfectly at that. When it embraced his face, Agares even felt some odd sensation, the same feeling of strength in his youth. It's like it was meant to be on his face, a second skin, a second face, atop his own. It felt silly, it felt odd, but for his age he will grasp any sensation that would make him feel like a spry young man once again. His eyes turned towards another item in the pile, a small pendant amongst the refuse, and he was about to reach towards it when it suddenly flew towards his open palm.

The phenomenon made him stumble back in shock, and the pendant fell down. It was unnatural, certainly, and yet in that fear of superstition that it could have been some vile witchcraft or evil magics... Agares felt that it was his own power. Within some deep recesses of his mind, a voice tells him to grasp that power. With an open hand, he reached out and the pendant flew once again.

In the following weeks, the old man found vigor within his bones once again. Strength has returned to him, and yet in a different shape and form. Metals bend to his will, like clay and putty to whatever he seems to desire. Perhaps it is this sudden surge of power that gave him courage that the man went over to his old workplace, and with his newfound might took it over by himself.

Through threats of both words and violence, as well as his newfound use of his power to actually manage the mines, Agares Hawthorne bought the company through his own money and power. The Hawthorne Steelworks quickly rose back to market, and for the past decade he has been pushing his business within New York City as the primary source of all things deep beneath the earth. However, in present time, a new face comes into the old market... and Agares won't hand over the industry he took with his own hands.

Personal goals: To advocate for Silent rights, and to expand his business. influence.
Silent Power:
  • Plutonic Might: Agares can bend, shape, and control metallic substances to his will. This method of manipulation can be used for offense and defense, shaping metals into weaponry and sharp implements as well as shielding mechanisms.
Limitation/drawback:
  • Plutonic Might is limited by sensory range, as well as a weight limit of over the mass of a car. It is also limited by Agares' imagination as well as knowledge of metallic substances. This power can only manipulate, change, and shape the metals in question, but not create such things out of thin air. It needs a medium to be manipulated.

Reading the setting and background gave me a fantastic jolt of inspiration to explore how an exceptionally talented/famous vocalist might adjust to the world after becoming Silent. Consider me interested

Name: Eliza Sherwin

Character history: Eliza Sherwin was born to a well-to-do reverend in rural Essex and his lady wife, both of them still enjoying the generational wealth passed to them by distant relations of nobility and closer family ties to emerging industrial businessmen, made newly wealthy in the decades since the Industrial Revolution. While she inherited her deeply held religious beliefs from her father, her relationship with him was distant, even as the pair's only surviving child. Despite being able to afford tutors and caretakers, though, her mother Ophelia took an active role in her education, particularly when it came to the arts. Eliza truly excelled vocally, and her mother took great pride in showcasing her daughter's talents whenever and wherever she could.

Eliza was entering the stride of early adulthood when the Great War erupted. Suddenly, the quaint farming communities around the Sherwins' estate became even quieter. Men and boys were drafted, sent to the trenches, and never returned. Even on the grounds of her home, where as a child she came to know dozens of gardeners and cooks, the emptiness took hold. Now, the few that remained were primarily women who were not called to the continent. This destruction of an entire generation, this World War that had ravaged Britain and France and all of Europe, gave her cause to reflect on her life - fragile as it seemed to be in a new age of empires, bombs from the sky and the slaughter of millions. For the first time, she began to consider if she was content to be married away to just another coast of England.

Traditional though her father was, he reacted with cold indifference. The wealth around them wasn't truly his, and though it was unlikely at his age he'd seek a son to pass it to, his religious bent made him of a mind that it wasn't overly important where the wealth ended when he passed. Eliza's mother, as ever, was supportive.

With her musical talents, Eliza was able to establish herself within the opera community in England's larger cities, and eventually became a sensation in London. Her performances there led her to stages across a rebuilding Europe, and eventually, to New York in the winter of 1923. There, hours before a performance a little over a week ago, she discovered her accursed mask in her dressing room. She donned it, assuming it must have been left by costume crews for the performance, but found that she couldn't utter a single word, let alone perform. When she tried to explain this to her peers and managers, she of course failed. She's not returned to or contacted her former employers since, secluding herself in the luxurious Bryant Park Hotel.
Personal goals: Recover her voice, even if it means forgoing her new power. Permanently destroy or otherwise be rid of her mask, which has so far remained with her despite attempts to abandon it.
Silent Power: Dissolution - Eliza can melt into a dark mist, completely dissolving from her physical form to creep through shadows, through small openings and vertically up to 30 feet.
Limitation/drawback: Eliza cannot manipulate objects or harm people while dissolved, and is only able to maintain the dissolution for a maximum of 30 seconds. The mist is also visibly unnatural in light, bearing an inky black color.

So, I really love the concept, and it is tentatively accepted. But something to note is that typically Silents can speak normally when not wearing their masks. Now if you wish to have it be a quirk of Eliza's that she can't even without her mask, I am all for that. But I did want to inform you of that fact ahead of time, in case that changes anything for you.

Silent-specific block

Durability: 11
Intelligence: 7
Silent Power Strength: 5
Resolve: 2

So, I really love the concept, and it is tentatively accepted. But something to note is that typically Silents can speak normally when not wearing their masks. Now if you wish to have it be a quirk of Eliza's that she can't even without her mask, I am all for that. But I did want to inform you of that fact ahead of time, in case that changes anything for you.

I see! Eliza’s condition being the result of a particularly malevolent/cursed mask still seems an interesting concept I’d enjoy exploring, assuming that Silents’ telepathy is able to communicate to several folks at once it shouldn’t significantly gimp the character’s ability to interact and express
If you ever need advice on writing, help creating an RP of your own, or just generally need any kind of help, feel free to TG! I've been around the block in my old age.
