A new Constitutional Convention

Postby Mossadeghist Iran » Mon Jun 27, 2022 4:42 pm

"The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States," - Article V of the U.S. Constitution, The Amendments Clause

Personally, I want a brand new supreme law. What about you?

Can we please have an amendment that states everyone born in the United States as a citizen gets healthcare?

That should be high up there. Mexico has such clauses in its Constitution, so why can't we?

Yeah. It pretty bad when the hybrid regime according to the Democracy Index can enshrine the right to healthcare but the flawed democracy can’t. Not that being a flawed democracy is something to be proud of.

I admit that it would be nice to change or replace the US constitution, but I am strongly opposed to it due to two reasons:
  • The constitution is the backbone of our country and if it is changed than all that work our founding fathers put in would go to waste.
  • If we replace the cobstitution, than the United States would no longer be the United States. Think about the constitution's purpose, it's meaning. We'd have a different country if it was replaced.

Outlaw filibusters in Congress, expand the Supreme Court, eliminate the reactionary Electoral College and directly elect the US President, mandatory nonpartisan redistricting for all states, universal early absentee voting. The rest is a matter of technique. done and done.
"...the Republican strategy of disenfranchisement is a state-by-state strategy. It looks like judicial rule where they cannot win. Where they cannot win by judicial rule, they will rule by procedural theft. Where they cannot convince voters to vote for them, they will convince the candidate they voted for to become one of them." - Tressie McMillan Cottom | "...now you have someone sitting on top of the personal data of several billion users, someone who has a long track record of vindictive harassment, someone who has the ear of the far right, and someone who has just shown us his willingness to weaponize internal company data to score political points. That scares me a lot." -- Marcus Hutchins*

There are issues with the structure of the US government which are so fundamental that it is inherently impossible to correct them without throwing the status quo out the proverbial window.

That is best done by legislation, not an amendment in the constitution. But I agree with the concept.

How would abolishing the constitution be expressed from a conservative viewpoint? If I'm not mistaken, most of the Republican Party base their entire ideology off of that document. Their actions follow it by heart.

Thomas Jefferson wanted constitutions to expire after 20 years. We can still be the United States under a new constitution; our nation is not made from a single document.

What I, us and the organization I mentioned want to do, is make constitutional amendments to the US constitution. Like declaring the end of birth right citizenship, we strongly believe the 14th amendment has been misinterpreted for many years. They have many ideas, I cant link to it, because it will be a threadjack. Perhaps the majority conservative US Supreme Court, will reverse its interpretation.

My own personal amendment to the US constitution as a republican right winger: Legal immigration is legal immigration, with all their rights respected, as proposed by the President, house and senate representatives, and signed into law by the President. Illegal immigration is illegal immigration and will not be tolerated.

I don't think there's a purpose in a new constitution. The articles and amendments so far seem bi-partisan enough that creating a new constitution would seem one sided and finicky. Especially if the "new".constitution inevitably goes to the wrong party

How would these be upsides? If you want the United States to crumble, maybe you shouldn't be living in it.

I don't see your point. Just because someone is killed for their background in RARE cases doesn't mean it's legal. Don't chance crime and you should be good.

thankfully i live in a state where the lgbt+ panic defense has been banned but i don't trust youngkin and the general assembly to not overturn that law

i want to move out of this shithole as fast as possible. i believe the collapse of the US would be a good thing and personally cannot wait for it to happen
