For discussion and debate about anything. (Not a roleplay related forum; out-of-character commentary only.)

Would you buy any of these combat dinosaurs?

1. Yes, I would try to bid for one or more of the dinosaurs, with the dinosaurs, I would have the means to influence the next world war/big regional conflict while pocketing billions.

2. I would leave the auction. Dinosaurs are useless in the modern battlefield. They would literally get shot down within seconds of deployment in a modern battlefield even if your enemies had nothing but Somali grade AK-47s.

Dinosaur Systems

Postby Infected Mushroom » Mon Jun 20, 2022 1:51 am

Please consider the following hypothetical:

You are an arms dealer. You attend a convention of arms dealers somewhere in the USA. There is a massive auction and what is being sold is a long list of caged genetically engineered combat dinosaurs advertised as being "perfect for the modern battlefield." The host of the auction demos the prize object of the auction, a large T Rex sized monster with "advanced instincts" and "high intelligence" that will target and destroy anything you can target with a laser pointer.

All around you, the other arms dealers are excited and start to bid in the millions.

Do you see any value in bidding for dinosaurs? Are they relevant in the modern battlefield?

Assume that the technology to revive dinosaurs is already out in the world but highly highly regulated.

Your options:

Please justify your response.

I would go for option 2. Auctioning dinosaurs as "modern weapons" is some serious joker business. If I could get into position to target enemies with lasers I'd want to call in artillery, missiles, or airplanes to attack, not some dinosaur that will just get gunned down. What a joke.

I'd go with option 2, Infected Mushrooms already pointed out the thing I was gonna mention about them; they're big as a skyscraper in a nutshell, so it's insanely easy to shoot them down. It's much harder to shoot a human than a dinosaur because dinosaurs are much bigger. It's obvious; I don't see a reason for others to go with option 1.

Option 2, because your opponents just need another laser pointer to have the dinosaurs targeting your own soldiers and equipment. It's fire pigs and elephants.

A dinosaur. A carnivorous warm-blooded one, to boot.
Something that can run slower than an ultra-compact utility car, tires before a human does, consumes a shitton of meat per day and shits a shitton per day, is bigger than a frickin' MBT, is warm, would trigger any landmine by walking on it, isn't armoured, and even requires a human operator to be within laser-pointer range.

I would definitely buy the dinosaurs because THEY ARE DINOSAURS!

How awesome would it be to own a laser guided T-Rex? I wouldn’t use it for war though, I would just have it kill my arch enemies on my secret island after I had long windedly explained my ridiculously over elaborate plot for world domination. There’d probably be a gourmet dinner involved too, as well as a hyper attractive young lady in a sexy designer costume.

Who wouldn’t do that.

Some dinosaur specimens would perhaps have some utility to the right buyers, but its probably not for any military uses. Its highly dangerous and expensive to keep detained but is easy enough to kill with the weapons we have, but also rare enough that you wouldn't want to if there is less lethal alternatives for getting it caged or into a controllable environment.

Its verified that a ton of the dinosaurs which didn't go extinct, are now what we call birds.

Clearly what I need to do is con out of their money this idiot clown who's got the resources to genetically engineer dinosaurs but somehow expects an arms dealer to believe that they are "perfect" for modern battlefields.

Putting aside the ethical implications of using a living animal as a weapon, no, a theropod dinosaur would not be a useful weapon on a 21st century battlefield.

Well, except maybe carrier pigeons. And hawks, for catching the enemy's carrier pigeons.

Pesently in 1909. The only stat that's canon in 1909 is weaponization, all others are canon for 2140.

Can’t imagine a scenario where a battle dinosaur makes sense to be honest. It’d be like training a rare Siberian tiger for war, needlessly expensive and significantly less convenient then a drone.

Considering he complained about real world Balkanisation being inspired by a potential plot point from Game of Thrones (lol), then made a thread trying to justify cultural genocide in a hypothetical situation where he gave off about Balkanisation.... yeah he probably did.

I see no point in these dinosaurs, frankly other than wasting money. Planes, tanks, and explosives could take them out. They could go wild and eat their owners. No combined arms operations because they can, quite frankly, just step on one of the friendlies.

I need one for home defense. Imagine robbing my house to see a flightless bird. You shrug it off, only for it to grow, destroying my roof in the process, and develop green laser eyes and destroy everything within a five mile radius, including me. No one will wanna rob my house, and my neighbors, knowing what will happen, will shoot the home invader before they even make it to my doorstep, knowing full well what happened last time.
