Retail in YN

Postby Dexterra » Thu Oct 07, 2021 12:46 pm

Retail is an economic trade sector wherein people buy and sell various goods or services. You may commonly see it in the form of stores, online shopping or even door-to-door salespeople. For many, it is their bread and butter, while for others it is the bane of their existence. After Dexterra voters granted control of the economy to consumers under the framework of free market eco-socialism, the Dexter retail sector managed to flourish within a fiscal structure handcrafted to balance consumer rights with business goals, labor rights with ethical management and worker's wages with rewarding proportionality - each in ways that are one hundred percent reliant on clean energy. Like many multiversal nations, Dexter shoppers are now out and about bagging sweet retail therapy in shopping malls, mom and pop shops, holes-in-the-wall or digital markets, while entrepreneurs are salivating at the newest storefront opportunities, white markets and untapped industries.

Generally, how much money does the average customer spend at each store?: Frostlanders are generally conscious of spending, and the government has enacted punitive measures to prevent AND deter non-essential spending.
Generally, are prices in your nation considered low, average or high?: High due to the previous government's inflation, though the current government is mitigating the issue.

Your Nation's Retail from a Customer's Perspective

Are customers allowed to freely shop and buy wherever they desire?: Yes.
Generally, how much money does the average customer spend at each store?: On average, customers are fairly wealthy compared to the general population, so 3500 kgFeEq. (or 315.46 NSD) would be about average for a single trip.
Generally, are prices in your nation considered low, average or high?: They are considered very low, due to the cheap labour, lack of safety or environmental regulations, and proximity of the industrial plants to the retail outlets.
Generally, how satisfied are customers?: Generally, customers are satisfied with their shopping trips.
Are there any holidays or times of year that customers are more active?: Yes - Christmas typically sees a lot of activity since a plurality of the population is christian. In addition, during slow seasons a holiday will sometimes be entirely fabricated by the news to convince everyone to go buy stuff, though this happens largely randomly.

[ X] General entertainment
[ X] General hobby
[ X] General stores/superstores
[ X] Healthcare and medicine
quick note - while there is a national health service available that provides healthcare for free, this healthcare is generally of low quality, so the wealthy usually use private health providers that compete with the government
[ X] Home care, improvement and security
[ X] Holidays
[ X] Hospitality, tourism and travel
[ X] International items
[ X] Jewelry
[ X] Magazine and newsstands
[ X] Maternity and paternity
[ ] Military surplus
There is no military, but large stockpiles of WWII surplus items exist in the country's corporate militaries, criminal organizations, and militias. So everything that would normally be military surplus can still be bought.

Your Nation's Retail from a Labor Perspective

Are your citizens freely allowed to establish their own businesses?: Yes.
Are your citizens freely allowed to work wherever they want?: Yes, as long as the potential employer consents to hire them.
Generally, how much does the average entry-level retail worker make per hour?: Entry-level retail workers make on the order of 12 kgFeEq. per hour, or around 1.08 NSD per hour.
Generally, how much does the average retail manager make per hour?: Retail managers typically make around 150 kgFeEq. per hour, or around 13.52 NSD per hour.
Generally, how much does the average retailer (as in the business itself) make per year?: The average retail owner usually makes around 600,000 kgFeEq per employee, or around 54,078 NSD per employee per year.
Generally, how happy are retail workers in your nation?: Usually quite unhappy, though exceptions certainly exist.

[ X] Accountants and other financial services
[ X] Assets and inventory management
[ X] Assistant store managers
[ X] Buyers
[ X] Cashiers
[ X] Customer service

These people usually drive vans filled with empty boxes, and pretend to be delivering the (empty) boxes to be let into one's house.

[ X] Information technology
[ X] Lot attendants

[ ] Other (please specify):

Which of the following are retail workers afforded in your nation? Check all that apply:

As a quick note, since many different businesses exist, I will be using a new scheme here. Blank will mean that retail workers are never afforded something, X will mean that it is mandated, and a score from 1-9 will be used for things that are done sometimes, but not mandated. 1 will mean that it is rarely done, and 9 that it is near-universally done.

[ 3] 15 minute breaks
[ 8] 30 minute breaks (i.e. lunch breaks)
[ 2] 45 minute breaks or longer
[ 1] Disability accommodations
[ 4] Career paths
[ 2] Food, water, first aid and other basic necessities
This is rarely given by the employer, but most retail workers make enough money to live, and some use hydroponics to keep themselves fed.
[ 1] Healthcare plans
[ 3] Living wages
Note that subsistence wages are near-universal for entry-level personnel.
[ ] Mandatory justification for termination (non at-will employment)
[ 7] Office parties/celebrations
[ 1] Paid maternity/paternity leave
[ 3] Paid sick leave
[ 3] Religious exemptions for worship, holidays, etc.
[ 2] Retirement plans
[ 5] Seats/stools
[ 6] Smoke breaks
[ 1] Stock options
[ 1] Unionization
Workers can usually form "unions," but retailers block employment of union members near-universally.
[ 2] Vacation time
[ 8] Weekends and/or other regular days of rest
[ ] Other (please specify):

Wrapping Up

Do you have any questions, comments or concerns about this survey? No.
Can this survey be improved anywhere? I think the survey could be improved by noting the difference between living and subsistance wages, and querying both.
Sincerely,
Rho Ophiuchi

National Info

Full name including pretitle: The Kingdom of Coconut Palm Island
Your nation's economic system: Mixed Economy-- capitalist with socialist features
Your nation's currency and symbol: 1 Sand Dollar (SD) (equivalent to 2 NSD/USD)

Your Nation's Retail from a Customer's Perspective

Are customers allowed to freely shop and buy wherever they desire?: Yes
Generally, how much money does the average customer spend at each store?: Around 30SD (60NSD/USD)
Generally, are prices in your nation considered low, average or high?: Essential items are cheap due to no sales tax and government interventions, but non-essential items are fairly expensive, due to a high non-essential item sales tax, and our status as an Island nation making it difficult to import items cheaply
Generally, how satisfied are customers?: Fairly satisfied-- the largest concern is that, as an Island, we lack the variety of items available that the mainland has, unless a person is fine with longer shipping times, but this is slowly being overcome (e.g., a citizen could probably find a pair of shoes from the brand they like, but if they want a very specific pair, they may have to order them and wait on delivery)
Are there any holidays or times of year that customers are more active?: Around Christmas (as a mostly-Christian nation) and other gift-giving religious holidays; also on June 1 (Election Day every year) and July 1 (when the newly-elected Senate is seated each year)

Your Nation's Retail from a Labor Perspective

Are your citizens freely allowed to establish their own businesses?: Yes, subject to government approval, a fee, and completion of an online business ethics course
Are your citizens freely allowed to work wherever they want?: Yes
Generally, how much does the average entry-level retail worker make per hour?: An entry-level worker might make minimum wage, 10 SD (=20 NSD/USD), or slightly more (15 SD/hr is competitive for entry-level). This is possible because executive salaries are limited as a proportion of the lowest-paid workers in the company-- to give the CEO a raise beyond that point, you have to pay the lowest-paid workers more, too
Generally, how much does the average retail manager make per hour?:
Generally, how much does the average retailer (as in the business itself) make per year?: Varies widely
Generally, how happy are retail workers in your nation?: Generally, very happy, because unions are extremely strong, and the King and the Senate are very pro-union. While our workplaces still resemble those in other nations, we strive to treat our workers better, and create more egalitarian workplaces.
