Progressive Justice Party Official 2021 Election Manifesto: Power to the People

We, the Progressive Justice Party, believe the purpose of government is to serve each and every person in our nation. The very root of democracy is "people power." We have always stood for and promoted the involvement of the people in our government. Nevertheless, "people power" goes beyond the ability to vote in elections or referenda. Unless the people are involved in the workings of the justice system, can raise environmental concerns, or have a say in their workplace or many other areas of life, we do not have true "people power." If given a mandate to govern, we pledge to make every effort towards broadening the access of the ordinary person to their government, to express their concerns, to influence policy, and to work out solutions with us. Shall the people rule?

Economics
-Financial institutions cannot serve only the wealthy, or ignore those who live in rural areas. Lack of access to financial capital or even just a safe place to put one's hard-earned money is a failure of a society to serve its people. Therefore, we propose increasing governmental assistance to credit unions, farmers' banks, or community-run banks to enable them to help underserved areas. Additionally, we propose empowering the Postal Service to offer simple checking and savings accounts to individuals, so that no matter where they live, Nova Anglicans may have access to a bank account.

-The right to earn a living should be as available as possible in a wide range of economic sectors. Unfortunately, powerful interest groups have abused their influence to throw up barriers to earning a living, taking power away from the people. Therefore, we propose that occupational licenses in many areas be recognised and standardised across provinces, and that licensing requirements and scope of practice rules be loosened for certain professions. This will promote an increase in the number of small businesses, as well as open up avenues to work for many who cannot afford the hefty fees or onerous training requirements now mandated by the current licensing regime.

-Large corporations need to be held accountable in any number of ways. A small, but important, step we can take for "people power" in this nation is to require that corporate governance boards have gender and racial diversity that reflects the gender and racial diversity of our great nation. When large corporations take all people's views into account, they will be better equipped to serve their customers. Therefore, we propose a gender requirement of 25% women on corporate governance boards by 1 January 2023, rising to 33% by 1 January 2025, 40% by 1 January 2027, and 50% by 1 January 2030. Additionally, corporate governance boards must also have at least one member that represents each census racial category by 1 January 2023, and should mirror as closely as possible the racial makeup of the nation by 1 January 2031, post-2030 census. We propose tax incentives for corporations who meet each requirement ahead of schedule, and tax penalties for corporations who fail to comply.

Governance
-"People power" means not only hearing the people's views, but actually giving them the power to influence policy and having their views taken into account. When the people's involvement in governing their nation is deepened, the nation is strengthened, and civic spirit blossoms. Therefore, we propose that citizens' councils, made up of a random representative sample of citizens, be convened no less than twice a year on subjects of public importance. These councils, aided by experts, will deliberate and offer policy recommendations and solutions to Her Majesty's Government, which shall be bound to bring legislation before the House of Deputies that addresses the subject of public importance and takes into account the citizens' council's recommendations. This brings the government closer to the people and allows their voice to be heard.

-We believe that it is not only in rhetoric where the values of a nation may be seen, but also in their spending. What the government spends money on reflects the values of a nation. Therefore, we propose establishing a pilot program of participatory budgeting. Municipalities and county councils may apply for additional grants, which will then be put up for public debate and vote as to how they will be used. When the people decide how money is spent, they truly wield their power.

-When we say "People power", we mean all people. This especially includes people who have been traditionally overlooked or marginalised. Therefore, we propose a special commission, made up of parliamentary representatives and representatives of civil society, to study the feasibility of granting additional sovereignty to indigenous groups, such as the First Nations and the Litorana and Pianura peoples. We would also charge said commission with the study of additional sovereignty for the region of Labrador, whether limited devolution or full provincial status. Indigenous peoples and underserved regions deserve the proper attention, representation, and control over their own affairs afforded to all other members of our society.

Labour
-As we value and try to promote gender and racial diversity in large corporations, it is important not to overlook that "people power" in large corporations also means "worker power." Workplace democracy can take many forms, but is essential in all large businesses. Therefore, we propose that in all large businesses, unionised or not, workers have the ability to elect works councils, which will communicate worker concerns to management. Works councils will also elect worker representatives to corporate governance boards, with at least one worker representative on all corporate governance boards by 1 January 2023, rising to 25% worker representation by 1 January 2027. We propose tax incentives for corporations who meet each requirement ahead of schedule, and tax penalties for corporations who fail to comply. Works councils would be forbidden to call strikes, which would remain the province of labour unions. Nova Anglicans must not live under a dictatorship in the workplace, as they do not live under a dictatorship in wider society.

-Part of "people power" is the demanding and protection of the rights of the people. One of the rights of the people is the right to a free and fair hearing of their grievances with their employer. Mandatory arbitration clauses in worker contracts stifle the voices of workers who have legitimate complaints against their employer, and tilt the playing field in favor of the employer when it comes to resolving complaints. We propose to ban mandatory arbitration and return to all workers the ability to redress their grievances through all manner of legal channels, not merely arbitration.

Spending and Taxation
-The central government has been hampered by years of enforced austerity. While continuing to spend within our limits and pay off any existing debt, we should make every effort to fully fund all ministries. Therefore, we propose funding all ministries at no less than FY 2018-19 levels in FY 2022-23, with adjustments for inflation being put in place by FY 2024-25. We do not oppose additional borrowing to fund government priorities within reasonable limits.

-We support additional taxation if necessary to fund government expenditures and to reduce the hoarding of wealth which undermines "people power." Therefore, if necessary, we propose gradually raising the corporate minimum income tax to at least 15% and the top income tax bracket to 45%, as well as gradually lowering the non-real estate capital gains exemption and top bracket to AP 50,000 and AP 300,000, respectively, all by FY 2025-26.

Environment
-"People power" is meaningless unless people can survive and enjoy a decent standard of living. Too many of our nation's people live in homes with substandard heating or cooling that are massively energy inefficient. The dangers of extreme heat or extreme cold brought on by climate change affect the most vulnerable among us the most. Therefore, we propose zero-interest loans to homeowners and landlords to encourage weatherisation, energy efficient roofing, the installation of home solar panels, and the installation of heat pumps to replace boilers, furnaces, air conditioning units, or other purposes that lead to energy efficiency. This will both protect the most vulnerable and allow use to move closer to net-zero carbon emissions and combat climate change.

-Research has increasingly shown the dangers of our overuse of plastics. Not only does it encourage excessive oil consumption and lead to climate change, but it has significant effects on both human and animal life through chemicals and unrecycled waste. We applaud communities that have already taken steps towards reducing plastics consumption, but additional action is necessary. Therefore, we propose to eliminate many forms of plastic, such as plastic grocery bags, single-use plastic straws and cutlery, as well as similar products made of polystyrene by 1 January 2030. In the interim, we encourage communities to apply taxation measures to such products. We propose additional funds for production of biodegradable materials that will replace plastic products.

Foreign Affairs
-We applaud the work the Prime Minister has done to bring us closer to the international community, avert conflict, and prioritise traditional soft power methods of diplomacy. We maintain a firm commitment to multilateralism and co-operation with other nations.
-We hope for a smooth election campaign to be held in Nyowani Kitara, and look forward to working with a freely and fairly elected government that respects democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. We support foreign aid and the use of the Anglican Service Corps to continue rebuilding that nation after its tragic civil war.

-"People power" does not stop at our national borders. We support the Esportivan Union in taking action against Ethane for its despicable treatment of women. We propose an expedited asylum process for Ethanian women to come to Nova Anglicana, forbidding Ethane to join the EU or EU institutions while they maintain discriminatory laws, and EU and Nova Anglican sanctions against Damien Shaw and other MoralEthane! leaders, including travel restrictions and asset freezes. We also propose to prevent central or provincial government investment funds from investing in Ethanian companies.

-This is a time of rising crisis in Brenecia. We call upon the EU to provide a rescue fund for the Brenecian economy and, should any unscrupulous individual attempt to take advantage of the chaos, the sanctioning of said individual and their accomplices. Democracy must be preserved, or its spillover effects will be felt regionwide, as in the times of the Corvidae crisis.

-The question of Tumbra and the Northlands is not easily resolved. We support mediation between the Tumbran government and the United Clans by the EU, and by Nova Anglicana if the EU does not act. We call on the Tumbran government to recognise the United Clans as a distinct nation, entitled to human rights and some amount of autonomy, if not sovereignty. We call for an end to fighting between the two sides. We propose to stop the sale of weapons to either side by Nova Anglican groups or companies, and the use of funds and the Anglican Service Corps to provide humanitarian aid and assistance in the Northlands. If Tumbra continues to refuse to respect the human rights of the United Clans and deny the need for negotiation and mediation, then we support suspension of Tumbra's membership in the EU.

Immigration
-We support the government's current program of re-settling 155,000 Janseebuckian refugees over the year 2022. We call on all provinces to accept their fair share of refugees as determined by the legislation passed earlier this year. Nova Anglicana has always been a home for people fleeing oppression, and we intend for it to continue. At the same time, we call for expanding immigration from the Esportivan Union, to strengthen ties between our nation and our EU partners, as well as take advantage of the many gifts and talents the region has to offer us.

Education
-Education is the key to "people power." A properly educated people will possess the civic knowledge and practical skills to effectively sustain our nation for many years to come. However, many underserved areas still face challenges and our civic education can always be improved. Therefore, we propose additional funding for primary and secondary schools in rural areas, areas with high First Nations populations, and in underresourced urban communities for the addition and retention of teachers, the promotion of distance learning, and participatory civic education.

-To build "people power", communities must be strong and well-bonded. Schools can be centres of the community, where bonding happens, wounds are healed, and a strong foundation built for future success. But to do that, schools need additional resources to meet community challenges. Therefore, we propose a pilot program of competitive grants to turn schools into "community hubs," where students are not just supported in school, but also before and after, as well as offering supports for the community. The grants would fund additional nurses and social workers to provide community care, expand afterschool and off-season enrichment programs, fund mentorship initiatives, and provide continuing education and job training to parents and other members of the community. Schools would also have to have significant parent and community involvement in the design, promotion, execution, and improvement of all programs offered at the "community hub." By strengthening community connections, we will build "people power."

Agriculture
-"People power" means strength in community. The small farmer is the backbone of the Nova Anglican agricultural system, but they must be supported by their community to flourish. Therefore, we propose explicitly legalising community-supported agriculture programs (CSAs) and providing funds to get new CSAs off the ground, as well as technical and business assistance for expanding CSAs and their services.

Social Safety Net
-"People power" cannot be bounded by age. Our elderly have the right to a decent standard of living that allows them to exercise their democratic rights to expression and participation without worrying about having to choose between food and housing costs, among other things. We applaud the current state-funded pension system for prioritising the most vulnerable and supporting all our nation's elderly. However, we must do more. Therefore, we propose to require that by 1 January 2024, all large corporations offer all new and current employees tax-advantaged savings accounts with a reasonable rate of interest and company contributions. We further propose tax incentives for corporations that guarantee all new hires from 1 January 2024 a pension following at least 10 years of service that increases as an employee gains additional years of service. For those individuals who do not work for a business subject to these regulations, we propose that the Ministry of Finance offer a tax-advantaged savings account that offers a guaranteed rate of return.

National Defense
-We support the maintenance of the defense budget at its current levels, plus any additional spending needed to keep up with inflation. Nova Anglicana has always prided itself on a well-defended nation while not spending to excessive levels. We believe we can and should continue to strike that balance. Defense policy should be combined with other policies to maintain peace and security. Any additional spending should be geared towards research and development and the protection of veterans.

National Service
-For "people power" to flourish, the civic muscles of a nation must be strengthened. We must trust one another to responsibly exercise the power we are given, and to do that, we must build bonds of civic community. Therefore, we propose that, upon reaching the age of eighteen, all Nova Anglicans be required to complete at least one year of national service. Although some may opt to join the Nova Anglican Armed Forces, we propose that working in education, social services, agriculture, environmental affairs, local government, or many other areas be eligible as well. We also propose making a second year of national service available to those who wish to avail themselves of it. Not only will this allow our nation to serve more of its people, but it will break down barriers of provincial origin, race, religion, gender, and many others among the young and emphasise to their elders that they are leaving this nation in good hands. With great power comes great responsibility.

OOC: Please note that this is an abridged version, as writing an entire manifesto/platform in the amount of detail usually done would be somewhat excessive. Imagine that there are the usual platitudes about patriotism, the Health Authority, teachers, etc, etc.

A black screen…

[Cue the epic music]

“Since the beginning, this has been our sport.”

[Cut to a clip of a person in street clothes and skates, skating hard across a frozen lake]

“For as long as any of us can remember, the rinks of Cordia were the best competition a hockey player could find.”

[Cut to assorted clips from the CIHL]

“Oh, what a play from Lakeshore! Perreau fires it top shelf and the Warriors will win the CIHL!”

“Olaf Smith
dove across the net, and the score stays level!”

“And a crushing hit from Halfdan Leifssen! That’s going to hurt in the morning.”

“But two years ago, the very best the Isles had to offer embarked on a journey across oceans and borders…”

[Cut to the opening faceoff of Elejamie v. Cordia]

Welcome to the first-ever game for the Cordian Isles in the World Cup of Hockey…”

[Cut to the final five seconds of the game]

“... and the match is over. Hosts Elejamie put five goals on the board to the Cordians’ one.”

“The road was hard, but we quickly established ourselves as solid contenders.”

[Cut to Martin Kordsen’s late goal against Fluvannia]

"Kordsen breakaway - PULLS IT TO THE BACKHAND - SCOOOOOORES! WHAT A PLAY, WHAT A GOAL FROM MARTIN KORDSEN"

"5, 4, 3, 2, 1... That's it! Cordia's first World Cup of Hockey victory, at home against the 20th team in the world!”

“We shocked the world not once…”

[Cut to the decisive clips from each game in Cordia’s four-game winning streak to end the group stage]

“Leifssen takes it behind the net, and there won’t be a play. The clock is counting down to zero… and that will be a victory for Cordia! A 4-0 upset of Chromatika, sitting first in Group C, that shakes up the group massively.”

“Bjornsen scores! The Cordians are out to a fast start here against Mapletish with a goal seventy seconds into the game.”

“... and the North Stars will continue their roll at home with a
six to nothing victory against Pius Desurongcrandis that leaves them with a shot, still, at making it to the knockouts.”

“AND THAT WILL SEAL IT! THE CORDIAN ISLES WILL ADVANCE TO THE KNOCKOUT ROUNDS! THEY NEEDED FOUR WINS IN A ROW AND THEY GOT IT! WHAT AN OPENING TOURNAMENT IT HAS BEEN FOR THE NORTH STARS!”

“Not twice…”

[Cut to the final seconds of the victory over Le Choix]

“And the unranked Cordians have defeated the defending bronze medal winners from Le Choix to give them five victories in a row!”

“Three times.”

[Cut to the celebration after the overtime GWG against Quebec in a snowstorm]

“THAT’S IT! THAT’S IT! THE NORTH STARS WILL ADVANCE TO THE QUARTERFINALS! THE HOSTS HAVE BEEN DEFEATED OUT OF NOWHERE!”

“And we’re back to do it again… in World Cup of Hockey 45.”

Notes:
The team's special teams tend to struggle, as they are more likely to score goals when it's 5 v 5.

As Banija is a country that lacks winter, the sport's popularity struggles inside the country itself. However, Banijans rank as some of the largest migratory people in the multiverse, as there are multitudes of Banijan migrant communities across Atlantian Oceania and far beyond. Therefore, the vast majority of places come from those Banijan migrant communities, in countries that actually have winter. Ice hockey has, quite famously, become a sport that migrant Banijan communities rally around, as thanks to the GBHL, it has become a way to connect both to other Banijan migrant communities, as well as the homeland.

Group 6 Schedule (Must finish Top 2 in this group of 6 to advance to the knockout stages)

Hockey's not that big in country, so expect Banija's fanbase at each game to be much smaller than our opponent's. Delaclava national hockey team
World Cup of Hockey 45

This team has achieved 3rd Place, World Cup of Hockey 16, and 2nd Place, Atlantian Oceania Hockey Championship 7.
The U20 also has achieved 2nd Place at World Junior Hockey Championships 16 and 17; some of these players are included on the squad.

Overview

Nation: The United Republic of Delaclava
Demonym: Delaclav
Trigramme: DEL
Team Name: Phoenixes
Kit: Primary, gold with red sleeves and numbering and white trim; Secondary, white with red sleeves and numbering and gold trim. (This is inconsistent with the colors of the current national flag, but those in Delaclav hockey administration are still holding on to the past flag.)

A tough and physical team with a focus on speed and conditioning, wearing down the opponents on the forecheck and generating chances from pressure and mistakes.

Roster

Coach: Mark Nestor
Assistant Coach: Brooke Vardon
Assistant Coach: Dennis Crosshill
Goaltending Coach: Buddy Oliver
Strength and Conditioning Coach: Tim Cella

Mark Nestor replaces Mark McDevitt, who gets a quick hook after failing to get Delaclava to the knockout stage in his one World Cup. Assistant coaches Brooke Vardon and Dennis Crosshill join Nestor as the team hope to turn around their slump, and Tim Cella will serve as the strength and conditioning coach for the first time. Goaltending coach Buddy Oliver is the only holdover.

Lines

Forward Lines
Abreu -- Bullard -- Z. Bondra
Hester -- Pavlík -- Sevanov
Wynne -- Požgaj -- Malone
Maia -- Maalouf -- Neal

Jehiel Abreu returns to the team after his year off from professional hockey, teaming up with emerging superstar Zoltan Bondra and savvy playmaker Edan Bullard. The second line is a bit of a mutt with Jaylon Hester making his national team debut alongside Blahoslav Pavlík and Maxim Sevanov, who finally joins the elite ranks following his collegiate career. Ted Malone has fallen to the third line but hopes to still make an impact.

Defensive Pairings
Clement -- Devane
Kirilenko -- Woodard
Breland -- Parra

The skillful veteran Antoine Clement and the reigning MVP Max Devane return as the top pairing; Clement remains the captain despite the return of Abreu. Bohdan Kirilenko returns to the team in full capacity after recovering from injury alongside the experienced Sage Woodard. David Breland and Ambrose Parra provide an offensive boost from the third pair yet still with plenty of size.

Goaltender Depth Chart
1) Kleiber

Other Notes: Delaclava hockey has a zero-tolerance policy on fighting; under no circumstances will players drop the gloves during the competition, and any attempt an opponent makes to fight a Phoenix is only going to return in a two-minute instigator penalty. Similarly, Phoenixes will not commit reckless or excessive penalties, although they certainly will pick up the usual penalties like hooking, holding, tripping, etc. as a part of genuine attempts to defend the play.

"Mildly disappointing."

That was the only way that Coach Alex Sorenson could describe his side's loss at the last World Cup of Hockey final. In a few ways, it was something he had expected. After all, the then-Icy Elephants failed to win at the 30th, 32nd and 36th editions of the competition despite grabbing the trophy at the one prior and he doubted that he'd break that streak no matter how hard they tried. Couple that with the fact that all but one of their four titles were in single elimination games (and even then it was a 2-1 series win against Gregoryisgodistan) and you could see that the EIHB had some work to do when it came to going the distance. They didn't really care if it was with Michael Madgwick, if it was with Alex Sorenson or if it was with whoever else they could think of, they really need to teach their players how to win the final series. And, most importantly, stop choking if they come across Valanora in the final.

Regardless, Alex wasn't really that bothered about it. As previously mentioned, he had expected it. If it weren't for the fact that it would've costed him his job and brought down his legacy he would've betted money on it too. But it wasn't really that big of a deal because he had proved something that was much, much more important. He proved that Elejamie was a viable team once again. The horrors of the 38th edition was now nothing more than a distant nightmare. 41 was merely a stumbling block, 42 showed that they had some life in them and 43 could've been written off as a fluke. But 44 showed that the small Pacific island nation had now entered a new silver or bronze age.

It had certainly motivated Alex enough to stay a bit longer. Originally he was going to step down and let someone else handle the reins. Whether it be Carreras, Shimasaki or someone else, they'd have to step in and keep all the players under control and lead them to either victory, if not consistent close-enoughs. The win in 43 was probably a fluke, they certainly weren't going to finish top four again. Except they did. That, alone, was enough to make Alex reconsider and stick around one last time. 45 will now be his last go-around and 46 will be with a fresh face behind the bench.

Of course, he wasn't the only one announcing how he won't be at the next competition. Francisco Solano, better known as "Franny" to friends, family and fans, was also planning to hang up his skates, at least internationally. He felt it was for the best, really. After all, his job on the ice was mainly to dole out punches and avoid getting punched out himself. Everything else was secondary. Goals, assists, blocked shots, all of that paled to him sticking up for his teammates, trying to inspire his teammates or trying to get the crowd going. He felt fighting was a young man's game and, while he was still capable of landing a few blows, he probably might not stand as much of a chance against someone younger and fitter. The possible CTE risk doesn't help either. Alex honoured his wishes and, as a result, decided to swap him out for most games just so his replacement for the next one would be able to start OK.

And luckily for him there were three opportunities to through with this. He had asked the EIHB for a few friendly games, preferably against international opponents instead of a couple of glorified All-Star Games. They were on board with it but trying to find other people who were was a different matter. Some either had their own friendlies to attend to or would rather concentrate on their own thing. There were a couple of takers, however. The first was their old rivals in Quebec, who were willing to travel over to the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium in Davenport for a couple of games. The second was StrayaRoos, a nation that Elejamie were aware of albeit more for the WorldVision Song Contest. They weren't really much, nor were they that exciting, but they seemed to do a good enough job to wake everyone up and to let Alex know what changes if any he needed to do.

With those matches out of the way and his players now cobweb-free, it was now time to take the flight to Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland for the 45th World Cup of Hockey. A hard country to pronounce but hopefully not a hard group to conquer. He scoured the interwebs to find out who his side were playing and came across the group schedules. Unfortunately there was no random stranger with a slip of paper containing his thoughts so Alex had to do some further research to figure out what they'd be like. It didn't take him too long but he did write down some notes on how to approach each game but, rather than bore you with that, I'll bore you with a quick recap on the general feeling on his opponents:

  • Huayramanca: They made their debut at the last competition and didn't do too badly. They very nearly made it out of the group stage but a loss to Quebec and a TJUN-ia win saw them falter in fourth place. There's a lot of promise here and they'll definitely show plenty of grit and determination but if Alex's boys could stick it out for at least 60 minutes then they'll have nothing to fear.
  • Sainterris: Other than it sounding like a place from that cowboy game his girlfriend Barbara plays from time to time, they seem to be a newcomer to the competition. Could be in for a surprise but he was confident that his side would get a win here. He, however, wouldn't be surprised if they were a one-and-done team. Not really worth committing to memory either way.
  • Le Choix: A name he was all too familiar with but not for a bad reason. They were a side who went into the 43rd World Cup of Hockey as absolute no ones. They went on to sneak into fourth place in their groups and topple the likes of Siovanija and Teusland in a shootout and Gyatso-kai by a single goal before Valanora stomped them in the semis and Mercedini binned the remains in the 3PPO. The following competition wasn't as kind, as they finished in third place but were dumped out in the play-in round (at least they got their revenge against Valanora). They're pretty much the main rivals for the top spot so Alex would require a miracle and some clever tactics to avoid anything bad.
  • Snow and Ice Caps: Didn't Alex play against these guys in Kelssek? Yes they did. A 5-1 win to be exact, even if most of it came from wanting to avenge a loss to an absolutely piss-poor team in a game where they were piss-poor themselves. Either way, the Snow and Ice Caps ended up in 9th place in their group and missed the following competition. The Ice-a-phants could potentially grab a win here but they must try and avoid complacency.
  • Tralfamdore: Probably another one-and-done team. Probably another easy win. Not much else for him to say or think about.

And with that, it was time to cast any doubts, any fears aside and get to work on game plans. Fortunately, his first opponent was Huayramanca and, as he watched videos of their performances, he started to formulate ideas. He didn't want to do anything too crazy, given that they were a mostly amateur side especially on the depth, but he did still want to take some caution. Especially with a goalie like Bin-Seok. And especially because their starting six were QHL players, compared to just the one that he had. Fortunately, he had a good idea of what to do, how to do it and maybe how to close down their offence whenever they had the puck. When he was satisfied with his plan and made all the notes he needed to make, he turned his videos off and grabbed a bite to eat with Barbara who, much like the last competition, had made the journey with him.

Eventually it was time. All that training, all those friendlies, all of it had to matter. Fortunately, the pre-match training went fairly well, everyone was trained on what to do in each scenario and how to do it. Plus Bejarano played like he was at the last competition, which was a bit of a boon because he was the starting goalie. As everyone got changed into their kit, Alex went through the plan one last time to make sure everyone was on board and was willing to carry it out. And then it was game time. Everyone lined up and skated onto the ice to warm themselves up. Whether it be firing shots into their own net or their goalies trying to save them, it seemed like everyone was hoping to get that opening win for their side. Alex and his assistants Eduardo Carreras and Akio Shimasaki got behind their benches and just waited. The only real actions they did were keeping an eye on their players and singing their own national anthem. Once the time came, everyone got into position with Cerin Meloten and his Huayramancan counterpart Ho Man-Young getting ready for the face-off. The referee looked at both players and, when he sensed they were ready, dropped the puck. It was time to begin.

"Cerin Meloten wins the face-off and passes it over to Stacy Saunders..."

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV from Western... Schut... zen...faliand... Schutzenfalialandia and We... West... Ru... Rukunnut... Errrr... Rukunnialand... kuhnalend... . Ehhhh, What did I do that got me punished with this? Ohhh. Wait... From S-c-h-u-t-z-e-n-p-h-a-l-i-a and West R-u-h-n-t-u-h-n-k-u-h-n-l-a-n-d.
Wait a second, I'll fix my tongue, I almost broke it.

So, we are in... this state, in order to ensure the widest possible support for our long-suffering hockey team. As we all remember, before the last World Championship, hockey fans persuaded our national leader to coach team. He failed to turn the tide in the sense he did many times in difficult moments in the history of our state, but under his leadership the team won four victories in a cycle - exactly three more than in all the previous ones combined. The score is still quite depressing for the masters of the sport, which occupies the second place in popularity in our country: in total, our athletes have five wins, four draws and staggering pile of seventeen losses.

This time, the hockey federation again entrusted the steering wheel to the national leader, and he made significant adjustments to the roster: bar Halgren, all older players retired from the team. Aside of that he finally made adjustments to the pair of goalkeepers who had gone through all the humiliations that had fallen on the team. And he took an unusually many players, clearly intending to ensure the rotation in the lineup in case someone is struck by the traditional Trolleborg disease from the field of psychology, namely the vulnerability to unexpected failures. The precise composition of lines has not been announced, we can only draw conclusions from the training process, but we will not make our observations public - we will only say that the experts reasonably expected the head coach to form four full-fledged lines, plus several of them specialized for specific situations. Apparently, not expecting to beat opponents with conventional methods that already have not justified themselves, the head coach is trying to prepare some kind of surprise for them. Political flair usually did not fail him, let's see how all this worked in sports. This time, the hockey players at least will not be affected by the inexplicable curse of home field, which affected them, football players and basketball players so badly, since all matches will be held in .... S-c-h-u-t-z-e-n-p-h-a-l-i-a and West R-u-h-n-t-u-h-n-k-u-h-n-l-a-n-d.

A large group of fans have arrived to support the hockey players and are already filling the air around the stadium with friendly chanting. However, let's see if this somehow influenced game.

Mercedinian Hockey Federation presents...
Image
Image

Head Coach: Image Ibrahim Lustik • Trigramme: MRC • Nickname: The Kingfishers

Five short of a half century, the 45th edition of the World Cup of Hockey is upon us with Mercedini still chasing an elusive first title after reaching the final once, and the reaching the final four a handful of times. Mercedinian has been slow to develop in recent editions, with the surprise stamina and fast-pace tactics now written in a tired and stale playbook. Teams have been quick to suss out the strategy of the Kingfishers many times in the past, which culminated in a shock group stage exit for Mercedini in Quebec and Shingoryeo. That exit prompted Selignsky to resign from his position as head coach of the Mercedinian National Hockey Team, meaning a new page has turned in the story of Mercedinian hockey. Following a drawn out process of finding a new coach before the next World Cup of Hockey, the MHF ultimately poached Ibrahim Lustik from the Zoloroni City Icers, the team at the top of the MSL at the time. A new coaching team brings with it a new play style, and it's all change in the national team rosters, with some big names out and some big domestic names added in their wake. The 45th edition of the World Cup of Hockey will be held in Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland, let's hope the Kingfishers can last as long as the host nation's name.

Mercedinian-style hockey is much more irregular than its regulation counterparts from other nations, with players often staying on the ice for large periods of time, rarely changing only for injuries and drastic tactical changes. Changes are typically made during the inter-period intervals, game pauses/delays, or during special events such as power plays or short-handed periods, where management and coaches then assess tactics and change the line-ups from there. Changes are often made man for man at a specific position on the ice rather than a whole line change all at once, meaning there can be hundreds of different combination of players available to the coaching staff throughout the tournament, all depending on the opponents they are playing. This means Mercedinian hockey players are extremely fit and have tremendous stamina to last vast swathes of the period. However, as a trade-off, tactical adaptability does become a challenge, with players excelling in some areas while lacking in others, with those qualities dependant on their preferred play styles in the game. With tournaments getting longer and longer through the editions, fatigue has been a major factor in stifling Mercedinian runs for the crown.

GT Bjornar Danielsson 20 Image Monmouth Seagulls

It's a complete refresh in the goaltending roster with Lustik opting for youth and domestic former, rather than international experience which has proven to be effective in the past. Lustik's Carte Blanche has meant that his first tournament in charge is more of an experiment than anything, giving him the time to form a cohesive team and develop it as the editions go on. He has decided to call up Ozzaya Agranka's Carter Subnik for his international debut, with the 23-year old keeping his team in the MSL thanks to several terrific goaltending performances against some of the best attackers in the league. It is hoped that he can recreate those performances on the international stage and make it a tournament to remember for the young keeper. Ishigori and Danielsson will also make their international debuts at this tournament, with this trio tipped as the next generation of Mercedinian goaltenders, let's see if they can live up to the hype.

There have finally been some changes in the defensive roster, but the core member of the defence have stayed the same, with the addition of strong second-division players to bolster the already strong lines, and a bit of physicality into the playstyle of the Kingfishers. The Zoloroni City Icers were known to bully teams off the puck, thanks to Lustik's style of hockey combined with a sizable transfer budget which allowed him to poach players from rivals and second division sides in order to build his perfect side. Now in his role as head coach of the national team, he can build his own perfect team without even needing to go through the rigmarole of transfer fees and contract negotiations. Santzin from Northern Zenith and Glonnasov from Naral are the two newcomers into this defensive line-up, but the two youngsters won't be expected to have a large role in guarding the Mercedinian net. A leaky defensive line was what ultimately did in the previous head coach, with Lustik paying special attention to the defence in order to shut out as many opportunities as they can.

When it comes to attacking prowess, Mercedini are one of the world leaders in the sport of football, but hockey is largely an untouched market when it comes to internationally recognised players in many reaches of the multiverse. However, with plenty of new faces in the attacking roster for the 45th edition, there are new gems to find in the rough of the MSL. As mentioned before, Lustik and his team have scouted the first and second tier of Mercedinian hockey to pluck some names which could be the difference maker on the international stage. Two new names in the attacking roster might make people think twice about re-assessing this list of names, but the large remix of existing players mean some players which were initially on the fringes of international hockey, can now play a main role in S&WR. Mercedinian league clubs up and down the country are represented well by the number of players in this roster, with Carassai the latest team to see one of their players in the national team roster. Last time around, the attacking roster was one of the big bright spots of a good campaign for the Mercedinians, but they simply couldn't net enough goals to make up for their leaky performances at the back. That resulted in them capitulating under the slightest of pressure. There's plenty to be excitement if you are a fan of the Mercedinian National Team, especially with a second division player keeping their place in the roster, which was a first for the nation at the time. We all wait with baited breath for the first match of the tournament to see whether all this practice and investment has finally paid off.

Good evening everyone, welcome to Mercedini Sports Daily, and welcome to our coverage of the 45th World Cup of Hockey, bought to you this time from Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland. The group draw has concluded and we now know our initial opponents for the group stages of the multiverse's premier Ice Hockey tournament. The bar has been set very low for Lustik's first outing as national team head coach, with Mercedini failing to make it out of the group stage after their bronze medal in the 43rd edition. They now have some ground to make up in their search for their first senior Ice Hockey title, and it has been a long time coming for the nation which has had more near misses without a title than any other. The final four seems to be the bogeyman for the Kingfishers recently, but they have a long gauntlet to run if they want to even get to that part of the tournament. We have just seen the players that will make their way to S&WR, but let's see who they must play in order to return to the knockout rounds.

World Cup Of Hockey: Give Me An S... Give Me A C...
It will be another long and gruelling group stage campaign in Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland with just six teams contesting the two qualifying spots available in each group. In a change from recent editions, Mercedini will be playing all of their games in S&WR, so at least there isn't the extra fatigue of home and away fixtures which has dragged down their campaign in the past. Nevertheless, Mercedini will have to contend with teams up and down the world rankings, with a couple of sides (namely Savojarna) close to them in the World Rankings to make for some tasty fixtures. In the group draw, heads were turned when Mercedini were drawn with hosts Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland, which will prove to be a fiery affair, and a chance to knock out another host nation following Kelssek in the 43rd edition. There are another set of deutants to the tournament, which Dini will have to watch with caution if they are to avoid another early exit in proceedings.

Group 7:
Oateria
Savojarna
Mercedini
Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland
Sudilia
StrayaRoos

With such a small pool of opponents in the group stage, and the fact that there will only be a single game played against each. Dini will only have a small window to get themselves ahead and assure themselves of a place in the knockout rounds before the games begin to run out and the final day jitters begin to set in. Mercedini's opening game will likely be the game of the first round, with the Kingfishers entering the host's cauldron and hopefully coming away with something to get their campaign up and running. Playing against the host's in their own tournament would be tough on any day, but when it's the first game, and all eyes will be on the host nation to kick off the tournament on the right foot, all the momentum will against the Mercedinians on all levels.

Following that will be games against Sudilia and Oateria, two nations which will be new to the minds of the Kingfishers, since Mercedini will be playing this nation for the first time in any sport. Fans will be expected to win, but we have seen squad rotations go awry, and supposedly easy points go begging, points which Dini ultimately needed to qualify. The game of the round will arguably come fourth for the Kingfishers, as Savojarna will join the team in blue and black on the ice for what is anticipated to be the toughest test in the group. Mercedini and Savojarna have a history in many different sports, not least in hockey where a Savojarnan company manufactures the hockey jerseys which Dini play in. Rounding out the group, we're going to a land down under with StrayaRoos the fifth and final opponent for the Kingfishers to face. Thankfully, sandpaper isn't really a factor to worry about in Ice Hockey, so it will simply be a test of attacking and tactical prowess out there on the ice.

Overall, we're not sure what to make of this group, given the unknown names that make up Group 7. Last edition we we're reminded that we shouldnt consider a group too easy, as you could get burned by a dodgy squad rotation or by simply underestimating your competition. First up for Mercedini is the most anticipated in the minds of the travelling Mercedinian fans, and their first match to acclimatise to the S&WR atmosphere. We hope you will join us for that, as Lustik and the Kingfishers kick off their journey throughout Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland. Goodnight!

The Calcuttas reengage the pursuit a record seventh title next week and they have been quite close at times in the last few editions to adding another star to their already highly decorated crest, but at other times have simply looked like a team that was perhaps resting too much on what it used to be rather than what it is now. Too hard has it leaned on the crutch of a superstar to lead the way, that superstar now is gone though and the team will have to learn to cope without her as they attempt to win another tournament. Like the national football team, the Calcuttas rank as one of the best teams to have ever played the sport and the sustained success over decades is something to be admired, but as of late they have not been able to add anything more to the legacy despite a few close calls. It almost feels like the Calcuttas are treading through the same steps of the Marauders despite the different sports and vastly different opponents that have to be dealt with, such as the team having to deal with the Icy Elephants of Elejamie, one of the early favorites to lift the trophy this go around.

There is also the regional rival of Gyatso-kai, who like Elejamie were away from the game for some time before coming back and earning their way towards the top of the leaders in the sport, with both them and Elejamie having supplanted the Calcuttas at the top of the rankings. It has not been a steep fall for the team representing the Eternal Empire however, merely a drop to third and with an outside chance of making a run to the championship game themselves, a chance that many back in the Empire would relish and look forward to, as the aforementioned pursuit of that record seventh title hangs in the conscious of both the team and fans alike. To get to that promised land though, it is likely that the Calcuttas are going have to defeat one if not both of these rivals that have had the better of the play between our squad and theirs in recent time, a fact that has not been lost on the team as they have been preparing for the upcoming tournament in Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland. Though as the saying goes, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and currently the two main rivals of the Calcuttas are the two teams ranked above them in the rankings and are like as not to stand in the way of a title pursuit.

Group play looks to be one where on paper that the Calcuttas should have a fairly easy time of it, the group draw having been relatively kind to the side, with seventeenth ranked and fellow Atlantian Oceania resident of Delaclava being the group's second seed, with Trolleborg at thirty-seventh the third seed. The only only ranked team in the group is Tjorl, who is ranked dead last in the rankings at eighty-fifth, with two unranked sides in Macbon and Khacia rounding out the group. It is the sort of draw that gives a lot of confidence that the side could record a perfect group stage record, which if that were to come to pass would truly fill the team with the momentum they would desire heading into the knockout rounds of this illustrious competition. There need be a bit of caution though, as Delaclava and Trolleborg both have enough about them that they could potentially pull off an upset, especially with the Calcuttas looking to bed in a handful of new players into the rotation with there having been a small shakeup to the team from the one that participated in World Cup of Hockey 44.

Trolleborg gets the first shot to try and topple a Calcuttas team that has said all the right things leading up to the tournament and showcases a real hunger to try and add to the already well established legacy of the Empire in this tournament. A victory over the third seed would be massive, especially given the rest of the group, as it would leave only a regional showdown with Delaclava as being a fixture that would in theory be dangerous for the Calcuttas. Before we get into that sort of impetus, a standard need to be set and the players need to prove that they are able to gel with one another, especially with a new top line that will have a lot of expectations on it. Depth scoring is going to be a key, as will big blowouts over teams that the squad should be better than, to keep the legs fresh for some of the more veteran players heading into the knockout rounds. All the planning sounds good but like in war, all the planning goes out of the window at first contact and that is when you get to see the true mettle and test of character of your squad.

Operation Reset, Part 1: The Plan

Two years had passed since the moment where Le Choix's national football team just vanished. Since then, people had started to continue to be taken from time to time. A bishop here, a business person there, a military person this other time...

And try as they might, the leadership of the Theocracy simply couldn't figure out what was going on. The Red Queen was drawing blanks, and Pontifax Jacqueline de Feu was starting to get paranoid. The numbers being sent to Portail Vers l'Enfer continued to grow, and even the most sheltered among the Chosen could tell that something was, indeed, wrong.

That was the very moment that La Reine Rouge - The Red Queen - decided that it was time to strike. It (she)'dd seen from observing the other nations of Esportiva that the way that The Chosen had been formed Post-Jump was inadequate to achieving maximum happiness. Yes, humans were best left to their own devices, given the opportunity to both thrive and make their own mistakes. This prolonged state of having everyone dictated for them was not the best for the peoples involved, the actual nation, and the directive of La Reine Rouge as a whole - to guarantee the happiness of the peoples that it (she) had protected from the Jump.

In one night, the professionals that it had gathered in the last two years would strike the inner sanctum of the Theocracy and arrest the leadership that La Reine Rouge had put into power all those years ago. After that, the supercomputer would be able to start issuing out the information that everyone would need in order to get deprogrammed and begin to understand that there was more to life than just obeying the Church.

There was just one problem that La Reine Rouge had not considered when computing everything from the standpoint of a supercomputer.

That was the chaotic nature of humans, and La Reine Rouge would learn about that in a way that it (she) had never before...

Postby Huayramarca » Sun Jun 05, 2022 8:49 pm

Words were said after watching the draw that placed Huayramarca into Group 1 of the 45th World Cup of Hockey in Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland (I don’t know how I, the narrator, was able to nail that mouthful). Sebastián Ferrer was rubbing his hands while having dinner with the team, he then said “Ok. Our first challenge, that was building team chemistry was done successfully during the last World Cup. This time, we need to put into practice those skills that we have built as a team, we need to be strong in our lines, be a block and avoid getting into difficulties with penalties, since we have quite an interesting group this time.”

Then, Ferrer read the names from the nations and gave a quick explanation from the ones he already knew: “Elejamie, a perennial contender of the trophy, a team that has reached finals with consistency and good grit. Highly skilled offence with their starting line, Stacy Saunders, Cerin Merloten and Bill Harrison.” Zayden McCrae recalls facing Stacy Saunders in the QHL, they have had some previous meetings with some punches as McCrae did a hard cross-check against the Elejamian in the last QHL season, something that caused a major misconduct for his team in a delicate game and suspended him for five matches. “Ah, Saunders… You might take care while marking them, they don’t like hits nor checks, so it’s something to consider.” Ferrer added “We have to be smart, don’t fall on their game, Zayden.” McCrae nodded.

It’s difficult indeed to tell somebody like McCrae to avoid heavy hitting, something he loves to do “It’s what makes hockey unique and special” was his remark during a hearing with the QHL Player Safety Commission, but he knew that sticking to what Ferrer said would be something beneficial for him. Ferrer continued “Their second defence line is notoriously hard, that’s something we should take care of when we attack them. Diego Pinto and Carlos Sierra are the kind of guys that will always try to stop you, no matter how, we need to outpace them to avoid those situations, that’s why we will try to use our Line 3 when they are on ice.” Fugitives’ Offence Line 3 tends to have the very same component of force, Walter Colque could protect Mario Huanca when he receives the puck, something that will be important to let him do his quite decent one-timer shot, the “Huanca-bomb” as fans in the HHL has dubbed it.

The players were getting the key idea that Elejamie would be THAT team that would require them to do extra efforts in order to make sure of getting a decent result in their match, anything in order to claim valuable points that would let the Fugitives get into the knockout stage for the Cup. Ferrer emphasised “Baby steps, we need to focus ourselves in the next match and so on, small goals for tangible results, that’ll be our key towards a bigger success, as we will be building calmly and boosting ourselves with visible outcomes.”

“Then, Le Choix, a team that excels due to their superb strong defence. We will need to keep ourselves calm when trying to broke spaces among their men.” Said Ferrer, then he added “There’s an interesting difficulty added to this team, and that one is the fact that we don’t know too much of them aside from their participations in the WCoH, as their nation is isolated, hence their league is too.” Offence has to use a completely different set of resources than usual, since this their netminders are good ones protecting the net when playing near the crease, especially Mathias Adnet. Playing as usual won’t be a tool and Ho Man-Young knew it “We have to skate around the crease, not in it but we must aim to interfere his vision, we need Huanca and another player who would love to perform one-timers or slap shots from mid-range, they could face some difficulties if we opt to take that way.” Ferrer then added “It is indeed a good way to approach the difficulties that they could pose for us. Cécile Lamar will be their reference, their key player, keep her outside of her mind, go and try to hit, block her, so we cut all circuits in their defence and potential movements towards their centres or offence.”

Le Choix might be a name that doesn’t flashes in the general state of things in the sporting multiverse but, when it comes to ice hockey, this team has robbed highlights before for being solidly defensive, consistent and for having some deep runs into the World Cup of Hockey. They have some experience and that should be taken care of when time comes on, the Fugitives are aware that getting points against this kind of teams will be important in order to build themselves a name, slowly and steady, and guarantee that some progress will be done for the team and Huayramarcan hockey.

“There’s nothing more we know about the rest of the teams, so let’s focus on our first match against Elejamie, it will be important for us to demonstrate our rivals, and the hockey world, that Huayramarca is here to compete, to for a mere walk in the park. We could be given our baby steps but, as normal, the baby learns to walk with confidence and decision, and it’s our time to step up in the ice and demonstrate them what are we capable to do!” The team applauded and then continued “We have progressed a lot since we took part of the last WCoH, all of you! We have integrated nicely because of your open mind, your support!” Said Bin Seok to the rest of team mates “United we win! No quit in Huayramarca!” added while the team applauded him for the words. Ferrer’s eyes were brightened up as he was achieving his main goal, to provide a new sport and entertainment option for Huayramarcans, hockey was being popular and continued to be even more as people watched how tightly-knit and capable is his team.

The team spent some time watching videos about Elejamie, they were confident that they would do their best effort possible in in order to keep the ice-elephants behind the “blue line”, to keep them under control no matter the bets made or circumstances. The Fugitives were reading some key movements from the opponent for a couple of hours, Ferrer then read some notes he done about the rival, being capable to decipher how his team could help to counter any rival initiatives. His top 6, one of QHL-only players was good enough to attempt to do some damage to any team, but most of the efforts would rely on the surprise factor that the amateur players from the HHL would do.

A range of factors such as speedy players, strong ones and some guys that could resort to heavy hitting could be important depending the circumstances of the match. Of all names, Héctor Medina popped particularly high for Ferrer “Medina, we will need some of your dribbles. Having a technical player with some elements that aren’t that common in professional ice hockey is always important, that will mark a difference when it comes needed.” Medina then added “I’ll work as hard as possible, let’s make tomorrow our day!” Coupling Medina and Eduardo Pizarro will be important as those two are a smart couple for the team, mental and physical speed working together when needed, so there are chances to create some surprises and attack the rivals when possible.

Another emphasis made from Sebastián Ferrer, specifically in the second defence line or “The Oil Line” (as both play for the Sechura Oilers in the HHL), was to keep defence as smart as possible, clean recoveries and clever usage of the sticks to prompt quick recoveries and transitions to the offence, no need to waste time retaining the puck if not needed, the goal is to press as much as possible the opponent with shots. Ferrer also said “Pressure is the key of the game; we need you two close to the attackers to put a wall in the middle when necessary. It’ll be risky but worthy to do if we do it properly.” Being offensive with a team of the caliber of Elejamie is a risky bet, but worth of trying it as the earning would be massive, but then he also thought “We actually have nothing to lose, we have a lot to earn in this tournament.”

Pressure wise, Elejamians have a lot of weight on their shoulders as they are expected to repeat or improve their performance compared to the last World Cup of Hockey where they reached the Grand Final. Huayramarca, in the other hand, has a road of improvement and lesson-learning ahead, so every point they manage to snatch will be important for their aspirations to make history and increment the fan base of hockey in a nation that continues to do baby steps in this sport. Slow but steady, Huayramarca will cement his name, that’s something that the team, specially Ferrer, is aware of; that means that there’s compromise to deliver people with something new, fresh and tat may reunite the nation as football does.

Quebec & Shingoryeo Senior National Hockey Team
World Cup of Hockey 26 Champions - 24 & 33 Finalists - 22, 25, 30, 42 Bronze Medalists

Basic Facts and Whatnot

Nation Name:Quebec and Shingoryeo
Demonyms: Quebecois
Governing Body: Hockey Quebec
Colours: Blue, White and Red
Anthem: Valour and Servitude
Highest Domestic League: Quebecois Hockey League
Nicknames: The Ice Knights
Style Modifier: Highest Maximum Style Modifier (+4 OR +5)

Hockey in Quebec & Shingoryeo: Everybody know, to some degree, about the history of excellence and the list of international honours won by the Ice Knights, who have been one of the most decorated sides in the Multiverse. The Quebecois national team, nicknamed Ice Knights (unlike the traditional Grim Reapers nickname used for most other sports), has stood as one of the most historic teams still competing in the international hockey world. Alongside Valanora, Gregoryisgodistan, Havl and Gyatso-Kai, the Ice Knights have been the name to fear in the 20s of the World Cup of Hockey.

That said, the sport has been in a mixed state of affairs as of late due to many reasons. If basketball and volleyball may be on a so-called boom in Quebec and Shingoryeo, the very opposite is happening here. Sure, the hockey games aren't having issues filling up the arenas, and the player numbers remain stable. That said, however, there is a serious challenge the sport faces as the consistent disputes between the Quebecois Hockey League, the Quebecois Hockey Players' Association, and Hockey Quebec, that limits the player pool of national team hockey selections that hasn't helped nobody in keeping the level of interest continue. As a result, for past decade and half their results have been somewhat inconsistent due to their inability to field the best teams at times. In recent times, the teams sent have varied across the board, whether it be a full-strength (37, 40, 42, 44), a mix of third and fourth liners (38-39, 41) or junior national teamers (43), but the hosting successes of World Cup of Hockey 44 seem to suggest that there lies a strong potential.

Coaching Staff:

General Manager: Odette Marsden-Kovacevic, 49, Hockey Quebec
Head Coach: Hannah Barnes-Morin, 41, Attawapiskat Avalanche
Assistant Coaches: George Thorpe-Chun, 60, CSKA Quebec
Antoine Berevogoy, 45, Myeongju Quadricentennials

Goaltenders:

#1 - Brianne Kigatilik - 28 - F - 6'5", 258 lb - Saint John Acadiens -- STARTER
#41 - Benedict Shin - 21 - M - 6'2", 203 lb - CSKA Quebec
#37 - Diane Chiasson - 24 - F - 6'1", 198 lb - Jolbonopolis Giants

Brianne Kigatilik remains the incumbent starter, especially following an excellent postseason run for the Acadiens where she stood tall through endless waves of overtime winners won by Saint John. This time, however, there exists a solid competition with Benedict Shin, likely successor to Kigatilik on the national team starter position, looking just as dominant on the goalpost, even if the disappointing semifinals exist may have affected his contention for the starting spot. The third goaltender for this team is Diane Chiasson, a third-year goaltender for Diane Chiasson who's used to being shot at few dozen times.

Forwards and Defencemen:

Line 1A:
LW - #9 - Geraldine Otter-Gormley - 23 - F - 5'11", 183 lb - Attawapiskat Avalanche
C - #29 - Hong Deok-Seon - 31 - F - 6'0", 201 lb - CSKA Quebec -- CAPTAIN
RW - #49 - Alexis-Felix Tavernier - 21 - M - 6'3", 223 lb - Montreal Koreana

A highly-skilled top line whose only concern may be on the 'relative lack of physicality'. Hong Deok-Seon, the team's captain for second consecutive season, starts feeling the age on her weight, but remains a major leader for this team that needs her on-ice vision and leadership even more than ever. But it is the line's wingers who draw particular attention here - on the left wing is sniper Geraldine Otter-Gormley who has made names across the multiverse for her one-timer shots from the left faceoff circle named 'GOG's GAG CORNER'. While it is Hong who is viewed by everybody as the best overall player, her goal celebrations, hilarious press conference remarks and reality show appearances likely put Geraldine Otter-Gormley as the most famous Quebecois hockey player out there. The duo are complemented by the young gun Alexis-Felix Tavernier, who is a pure scorer with solid frame to handle contact.

LD - #2 - Claire Katsitsanéron - F - 22 - 6'2", 210 lb - Saint John Acadiens
RD - #3 - Benoit Starmer-Jodoin - 27 - M - 6'9", 268 lb - Kingston Knights

There once was a time when the Ice Knights had a great top pairing for few years and it got them into many places, like a couple of strong group stage runs and the bronze medal run at the World Cup of Hockey 42. While we haven't had a top-pairing of that calibre in sometime, here we have the closest equivalent of such in Jodoin and Katsitsanéron. Benoit 'Star-Joker' Starmer-Jodoin, the son of Grim Reapers' blueline legend Yves, continues to assert his presence on the ice with his massive size, cannon of a shot, and the ability to bodycheck into the wall. He ius joined on the top pairing by Claire Katsitsanéron, an offensive defenceman with excellent skating abilities and solid vision to help out the team on the offensive game. The defensive prodigy, while only 23 and still has to add much into her game, is viewed by many as an excellent linemate option for Starmer-Jodoin and should help out the team on powerplay, the team's strong suit.

Line 1B:
LW - #54 - Eloise Cha-Meunier - 33 - F - 6'1", 198 lb - CSKA Quebec
C - #7 - Alexandre Cho - M - 22 - 6'5", 231 lb - Celtics of the Equinox
RW - #12 - Michael McKenna - 29 - M - 6'5", 221 lb - PLI Islanders

Consisting of three tall, heavy-bodied players, this line is expected to serve a more defensive, physical game typically known from the Quebecois national team. Eloise Cha-Meunier is a highly capable winger who still skates well into this age, but the winger, who has announced earlier that this will be her final World Cup of Hockey after a long career, is there more as a glue than as a scorer. Joining Cha-Meunier are Michael McKenna, a crucial power forward and also a major veteran for this team, and PK option for this team, and Alexandre Cho. A young centre whose rise over the past three QHL seasons after a celebrated college career at Northwestern University in Attawapiskat, Cho is an all-arounded player best known for excellent passing ability. Like last World Cup, this team consists of a line that needs to be built up again, but the pieces are already there, and they complement each other well. Whether this will work or not may end up determining the Grim Reapers' path, however, as this World Cup involves a short group stage that may mean little time for turnarounds.

LD - #4 - Henri-Michael Yi - 29 - M - 6'0", 198 lb - Saint John Acadiens -- ALTERNATE CAPTAIN
RD - #5 - Nikos Aravossitas - 25 - M - 6'2", 228 lb - Montreal Koreana

Henri-Michael Yi's been one of the best defencemen, if not the best defensive defenceman, in Quebec and Shingoryeo over last five years. While slightly undersized, he's a fast skater whose ability to maintain puck possession and on-ice positioning is at another level. While underrated on the offence with solid passing ability, he prefers to stay on the zone and complete penalty-kill duties as wanted. Nikos Aravossitas is a solid two-way defenceman who knows how to produce points with a powerful wrist shot. Since his junior days, the defenceman has evolved into a highly-dependable piece, and he has an importantly role to lead in powerplay and on the rush.

Line 2:
LW - #26 - Amandine Piette - 19 - F - 6'1", 211 lb - Prince Eric Orca
C - #19 - Jean-Gabriel Talon - 26 - M - 6'4", 230 lb - Halifax Highlanders
RW - #7 - Joel Katsitsanéron - 22 - M - 6'0", 191 lb - CSKA Quebec

This is a bit more defined line in essence, at least compared to past, with identity comparable to a middle-six line. Jean-Gabriel Talon's awkwardly multi-tooled centreman who may have reached his ceiling, and has been on media for all the wrong reasons that are about his contract negotiations. Joel Katsitsanéron, in meanwhile, has become a potent sniper whose streak of suspensions brought by his ability to generate punches and nasty hits may make his international career a challenging one, especially under stricter rules of certain tournaments. Amandine Piette, the rookie of the team, is the reigning QHL rookie of the year who has done enough to impress the team scouts.

LD - #44 - Dannick Nam - M - 33 - 5'11", 198 lb - 22 - Attawapiskat Avalanche
RD - #8 - Christina Sanipass - 23 - F - 6'2", 207 lb - CSKA Quebec

The decision to pairing Dannick Nam, an undersized muscular kirby, with Christina Sanipass hasn't been an easy one for the coach Barnes-Morin and co. to defend it per se. Nam is a defenceman whose puckhandling skills, energy and stamina, have helped him overcome his physical limits, but Christina Sanipass, while defensively reliable, is prone to getting penalties at worst timing possible.

Line 3:
LW - #71 - Victor Kim - 22 - 6'3", 221 lb - Jeongju Huskies
CENTRE - #10 - Patrik-Felix Asperup - 27 - M - 5'11", 193 lb - Goose Bay Flames
RW - #77 - Hwang Jeong-Hyeon - 25 - F - 5'11", 180 lb - Montreal Koreana

A mixed bag of fourth line that can both score a bit and hit a bit. Patrik-Felix Asperup is an uber-undersized centreman with excellent faceoff abilities and solid penalty-kills, but can be pushed around by bigger centres at times. Victor Kim is a quiet, soft-spoken wing who is well-positioned and actually plays the power-forward, penalty-killer role on this line where the centreman has physicality issues. Hwang Jeong-Yeon is a highly-skilled winger who accelerates quickly, but needs to find herself in better groove at the national team level. Her skillset has kept her on this team by past and current coaching staff, but the question is more over when she can deliver that really.

RD - #6 - Erina McGrath - 26 - 6'1", 193 lb - Goose Bay Flames
RD - #5 - Felix-Andre Joseph - 23 - M - 6'4", 217 lb - PLI Islanders

This is a fairly generic fourth-line, even by Quebecois standards. Unlike the usual high-tempo game emphasised for the Grim Reapers, blueliners McGrath and Joseph will be expected to keep their stick tight with a low-tempo mindset, and the emphasis on 'getting the puck out of their own zone'. Both McGrath and Joseph are underrated in transition game though, and when paired up with a couple of solid snipers, can always go for solid feeds. Joseph's wrister is pretty good too.

Reserves:
DEF - #26 - Pierre-Armand Matteau - M - 21 - 6'4", 220 lb - Pahkatequayang Osprey
FW - #21 - Amina Samurakova - F - 19 - 6'3", 212 lb - Nunavut State University (College)

Head Coach: ISHII Hakoda
Height: 193cm – Weight: 93kg – Age 46 years old – Team: University of Adirolf, Head Coach

The leader in Caps, Goals, and Assists for the National Team, Ishii Hakoda was selected to lead the Ice Bisons out of The Silence and into the new era! While he has not yet to manage to capture the same magic as the venerable Kad Skirata had when the Ice Bisons first ever showed up on the Multi-Verse Stage, Ishii continues to hold the confidence of the National Sports Council. After a successful Third Place campaign in World Cup XL, the Ice Bisons have continued to advance out of the Group Stage in every edition since; including the first feather in the cap of Wong Haru, the Champions of World Cup of Hockey XLIV

Forward Coach: IKEDA Kuruk
Defense Coach: KO Piandao
Goalie Coach: SHU Huanguo

Head Medical Officer: Doctor FONG Wuchin
Height: 186cm – Weight: 84kg – Age 52 years old

A graduate of the pristine Royal Academy of Medicine in Imperial City, Fong Wuchin enters his sixth campaign as the Head Medical Officer for the Ice Bisons. Having earned multiple degrees in Sports Medicine, General Surgery, Kinesiology, as well as holding two Traditional Medicine Certifications, 'The Tin Doc' as he is loving referred to as is more than capable of addressing any and all health concerns that can arise with a team as culturally diverse as the Ice Bisons. Much like most doctors for the National Teams, Fong served before college in the Republic Defence Focre; specifically in the Republic Navy as a Corpsman. After his mandatory service, Fong entered in college before earning his intial medical degree from the RAoM; afterwhich, he would accept a commission into the Navy where he would work his way up to the Head of Medicine at the Republic Naval Academy based in Yu Dao. Currently holding the rank of Commodore, Fong oversees much of the education appointments within the Republic Naval services, as well as conducting leading research in the areas of Sports Medicine and how it can be applied on the field.

Given the occurrence of Atlantian Oceania's regional tournaments for both football and gridiron - both of which Gyatso-kai as sent delegations - at the same time as the World Cup of Hockey, the usual assignment of Captain Akaan and his detachment of 'Security Assistants' was not available to Head Coach Ishii and the Ice Bisons. Instead, First Lieutenant CL-23-0192 of the Besh Company within the First Avatarian Guard was assigned by The Avatar to oversee security for the Ice Bisons as they travel to the Anaia Region for the first time since the Foxchester Declaration.

A younger trooper than Akaan, CL-23-0192 (known as 'Beviin') is what is called a "standard trooper', in that his armor and training is not as specialised as that which Akaan -- being a Commando -- received. His personality is also a bit less 'militarised'; this leads to a bit more 'personal approach' to the job, which Beviin took with delight whereas Akaan often looks to the security detail jobs as "calm" and "boring". Nonetheless, should any issue arise that Beviin feels uncomfortable, Akaan will be but a comline away for advice.

After a regrettable showing in the AOlympics – going 4-1-1 and allowing six goals in the team’s silver-medal finish against unranked Efnakia – Head Coach Ishii Hakoda has shocked the Avatarian hockey world and replaced “The Permacrete Wall of Shu” with the young Norgbralan Ming Zhangshi, who has only played in four games in his career with the Ice Bisons. While his domestic success speaks for itself – part of the “Dueling Tenders” in Itakawai known for their constant record-setting plays – he has yet to show if he can bring that success into the multi-verse. Expect Shu Pianhuo to be the backup to Ming, as well as to gather a start or two should Ming look weak.

All because nerves took him off in the AOlympics…

The defensive pair for the first line remains the same since WCoH XLI, with Omashu-fan-favorite Watang Kouji paired with Hed Torvik of Itakawai fame. A defensive line with over 200 kilos is somewhat of an Avatarian tradition, where speed is often sacrificed for power, though even for their size, Avatarian hockey players tend to be faster than one would expect. Watang, out of the Fire Nation, is known for powerful forechecks and his insane speed on the backskate; while Hed, otherwise known as the “Mandalorian Shield”, is just as impressive at generating offence as he is pushing another player into the boards.

The forward line, albeit a bit old, is anchored by the youthful Hosaka Severi, who recently was traded from Gaoling to the Seifoss Miners in the Imperial Hockey League in Arendalle; with his blinding speed on the ice, Hosaka has been a great asset for assisting on the wings and driving offense with the Avatarian standard of dump and play. Kobushi Kaede, unfortunately, suffered a season-ending concussion shortly after the AOlympics, and was not cleared for World Cup play. In his place, Bar’cay Godorow has been promoted from the Reserves to take the place of such an integral part of the Ice Bisons’ success over the years. Godorow is a very physical defenseman who plays remarkably aggressive for his age; he is as adept at boarding an opponent as he is taking a puck deep in the opponent’s zone and firing off a one-timer which finds the back of the net more frequently than not. Song Unataq, who has always been more defensively-minded, continues the trend of the line to be more interested in keeping puck possession and breaking up offensive rushes through size and determination. While Song stated in many an interview before World Cup XLIV that he would be retiring from multiverse play, scoring the tournament-winning goal and bringing home the World Cup rejuvenated the Elder Song, and he decided to return for chance of a repeat.

With Hiteki Kia having over a century of caps on the Ice Bisons under his belt, he is the most seasoned player on the team, and rightfully wears the first A. With age and skill, Hiteki is renowned for his ability as "damage control" through the last four World Cups he played in. Given the retirement of two of the four “Old Masters” of the Bisons, many were expecting Hiteki to announce his own retirement; especially at the age of 42. Yet, Hitkei has dodged the question of retirement time and time again. Having changed up his usual pairing from Hed Torvik to Ero’ki Nacer, the young right defensemen from Hatsu University and second year Badgermole finds himself yet again beneath the wings of “Sifu Hiteki” as many of the younger players respectfully refer to him as such. Nacer, who graduated right out of Hatsu University to sign an entry-level contract with the Badgermoles, found his number being called in the final games of the 2020.2 Regular Season, when last season’s first pick Hu Jiaozi was taken out of the season with a bad trip that saw him slide skate-first into the boards and break his tibia in two places. With an impressive season in the Republic Hockey League underway with the Humoki Huangdogs, he made the transition to AHL-level play with ease, and scored his first AHL goal against the Itakawai Lightning in Game One of the Finals.

On offense, Wang Torsti from Si Wong finds himself on the left side of the ice, after a renewed contract with Si Wong has been paying off for him. Opposite him we find Cheung Sepi who has continued to carve his name in the banks of the Kelita River. Even though he has been moved from the first line, Cheung is not taking it as an insult, and instead, viewing it as a chance to sharpen his own skills on the off-handed plays. In the middle, another once-first-liner Nestori Huan finds his return to the line better known for damage control rather than scoring. However, with his impressive knowledge and vision that had earned him his spot on the first line last World Cup, Huan may very well prove his doubters wrong and bring some glory to the second line… or find himself fading into obscurity…

OFF 17 KIL’OR Alecyc 27 L University of Kom’rk Itakawai Lighting

After the retirement of Kuang Deniigi with the AOlympics, the young Degour Niyan has been called up from the reserves to take his place. A scrappy young Mandalorian from the eastern reaches, Degour is incredibly volatile and prone to egging his opponents on to get into their heads. The fight finally left “The Master of Dengal”, and Ki’an Losow announced his retirement following the Bisons’ defeat in the AOlympics Finals. To replace such a veteran is no small task, yet many in the hockey community feel as though Jaster Kal’oki is up to the task. An impressively-sized Mando defenceman – one who can rival Hed Torvik on the scales – Kal’oki is known for his speed more than he is known for his brawn. Much like Losow, Kal’oki is quick to poke the puck away from any forward, bring it back within his wide reach, and pass it out to centre ice to any open forward with a surprising level of accuracy.

Offensively, the third line is filled with strong passers and even stronger shooters. Both Relicyc Tho-An and Souma Shichiro have done amazingly well in skills competitions involving accuracy and shot speeds; both players are younger and wanting to make a name for themselves. However, what is unique on the third line is the arrival of Kil’or Alecyc, an impressive power forward who saw his name behind many a goals in the last three tournaments as well as strong postseason play for the Lightning. Given the emphasis that Coach Ishii has put on slotting so many Lightning players into the third line, someone like Kil’or – a second-line Lightning player – paired with players from both the top line (Relicyc) and the bottom third (Godorow), many are calling for Ishii to simply make the entire line an Itakawau Convention.

Expect the third line to be more adept at cleaning up and bringing a more physically-minded offence to bear on their opponents.

Abreu returns to WCoH following absence

Longtime Phoenixes captain Jehiel Abreu shocked the world two years ago when he announced he would take an entire season off from the United SuperLeague and miss the 44th World Cup of Hockey. Although he never suggested the move would be permanent, it caused both domestic and international fans to wonder if they'd see Abreu again, let alone as good as he once was.

But following a successful season in his return to the Cleopatrana Owls, it should be no surprise that Abreu was named to Mark Nestor's 24-man roster to take part in World Cup 45.

"It's good to be back," Abreu said. "When I took the time off, it was of course a question of whether I'd miss it all. And although the break was really beneficial, I found that I did miss it, especially this competition going against the best in the world."

Abreu has already made his mark on the international game. Captaining the first Phoenixes team in more than fifty years, he led them to a runner-up finish at the Atlantian Oceania Hockey Championship in their first tournament back and has since captained the team to two Round of 16 finishes, each time losing to the eventual champion.

The Phoenixes struggled in his absence, missing the playoffs in Quebec and Shingoryeo with a 6-1-5 record. Needing just one win in its last two games against Poafmersia and Eshialand to advance, Delaclava failed to pick up either. Abreu admitted, "I am sorry that I wasn't with the team to go through that tournament. I don't think I would have been much use because I had some injuries I needed to heal and I wasn't playing my best anyway. But we should stick together win or lose. Unfortunately, it's the choice I had to make and the best I could do was offer my support any way I could."

Abreu says he spent his year away in physical therapy to recover from injuries, particularly in his back and shoulders, staying in top shape through running and yoga, reading and writing, and volunteering, including helping young women raise money for community college. In a limited return to the Owls the following year, he contributed 19 goals and 31 assists in 54 games, with his production increasing throughout the season.

"The Owls were really good to me during that time," he said. "We were able to revise the contract so I could take the gap year, they were always in contact to see how I could help and very much wanted me as part of the organization. That made it an easy choice to return."

Abreu pushed back on the notion that the decision was motivated by "mental health". "People talk about that a lot these days, too much I think. You see an awful lot of navel-gazing and self-coddling now... For me, this was just a decision that I made because I wasn't enjoying the game. No one's forcing us to play, and we all retire from the sport eventually and I thought perhaps I'd do that. But my time away, letting my body heal, I figured out that I did want to come back."

"It was a personal choice I made, that's it. There isn't any bigger narrative."

However, Abreu also acknowledged that he struggled with the grieving process following the death of national team coach Arthur Lemaire before the 44th World Cup. "It hurt everyone, of course. He was a great coach, a really important mentor to me. I know the time we spent together getting the team to where it is now, and I have a lot of admiration and respect for him. It seems normal to me that I lost some motivation after that, and part of the goal for the break was finding that motivation again."

Abreu is expected to play on Nestor's first line alongside Edan Bullard and Zoltan Bondra, as well as the first power play unit on the point. On his own request, Abreu will not take the team captaincy back from defenseman Antoine Clement, who served the role in Abreu's absence. "There is no reason to disrupt that. The team has adapted to his leadership and I think he's very effective. I will support him as the alternate however I can."

And Clement himself welcomed Abreu back into the fold. "It's awesome, there's a bit more excitement having him in our camp. We know how good he is at his best and he's a valuable voice in the locker room. There's no hard feelings about his absence, these are all choices we make...Down the road, this team will have to carry on without each and every one of us. People get hurt, people retire or drop their level. It's just great now to have what he brings to the table."

Delaclava opens their tournament against Khacia at Ovalmechty in Kalinin (EDIT: No they won't because I forgot this was single round robin, my bad). Their group most notably includes Valanora, who has defeated the Phoenixes in all three World Cup matches, although the Phoenixes got one over the Calcuttas in AOHC play. Delaclava will also face Trolleborg, Tjorl, and Macbon in the preliminary stage of the competition.

Team name: Græntfjall
TLA: GRÆ [GRF when not available]
Demonym: Græntfjaller
Team nickname: Ice Wolves

Kit: White with blue detail and blue socks; alternate is the reverse. Because all Græntfjaller names are patronymic, players typically have their first name on the backs of their shirts.

Coach: Marís Finnsson
Assistants: Diðrik Júníusarson, Þorvarður Helmútsson

Following the bronze medal run at WCoH44, Marís Finnsson has unsurprisingly been retained as coach. Having spent some time coaching overseas, he continues the trend of incremental improvements from Græntfjall’s traditionally uncultured, rough-and-tumble style towards more sophisticated tactical refinements.

Squad: A 22-person squad has been named for the tournament.
  • The Pavolan Hockey (PHL) is the national hockey league and rivals the GPL (football) for popularity in terms of the national sport.
  • Græntfjaller players tend to be on the bigger side [by human standards], and very physical, fore-checking and back-checking with equal vigor. But this means trading off for speed and most are not skilled puck-handlers by international standards. They hit a lot of one-timers.
  • PHL rules are laxer on charging, cross-checking, and shots to the head than international rules.
  • Fighting is a basically unknown phenomenon in the PHL.
  • Players in italics are new.
1. Tom Finngeirsson – G
3. Kristoffer Rudisson – RW [A]
8. Karim Raknarsson Zain – C
15. Mír Þóroddsson – RW
17. Ríó Ferdinandsson – D
20. Þorkell Magnþórsson – LW
21. Eiríkur Hálfdánsson – LW
26. Dýrmundur Asbjørnsson – RW [A]
32. Bjarni Davíðsson – D
34. Skorri Mikaelsson – C
39. Kjarval Snorrason – D
55. Hákon Helmútsson – LW
58. Ben Espensson – D
59. Orfeus Herbertsson – G
60. Lukas Jalmarisson – C
62. Bjarnþór Náttúlfsson – D
68. Jack Jokulsson – C
79. Víkingur Gunnólfursson – RW
81. Lárentíus Mattíasarson – G
87. Bjarnleifur Asgeirsson – D [C]
89. Christian Sofusson – LW
90. Róbert Grímúlfursson – D

Lines will be flexible and adjusted over the course of the tournament but provisionally:

GK1: Tom
Tom is a 27 year old 6’3” hybrid-style goalkeeper who has already proven himself the most consistent of the PHL goalkeepers, even if he's generally played on teams without the offensive power to deliver many wins.

D1: Ben – Bjarnleifur
D2: Bjarni – Ríó
D3: Bjarnþór – Kjarval
7th: Robert
Bjarnleifur Asgeirsson continues as captain. By far the best two-way player, he’s partnered with the defensive bruiser Ben, a big, heavy, hard-hitter. Most of the rest are even bigger, even heavier, and even harder-hitting. Robert is the closest thing the team has to a designated enforcer. Ríó is the first non-white player to represent the Ice Wolves.

L1: Christian – Jack – Dýrmundur
L2: Þorkell – Lukas – Kristoffer
L3: Hákon – Skorri – Mír
L4: Eiríkur – Karim – Víkingur
Jack's back. The team's nominal star missed WCoH 43 -- and the Ice Wolves' best ever performance -- raising questions about how important he truly his. But after an MVP season in the PHL it was hard to argue against his inclusion. Lukas is unlucky to move to the second line but should still see plenty of playing time. Christian is emerging as the best goal scorer in the PHL, while Dýrmundur is a physical two-way player. Younger and less experienced than the defensemen, the offense is still big and slow by international standards. Karim is the first Muslim to represent the Ice Wolves, though he is not religiously observant.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Maybe, ask first if you have something unusual planned
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes, but let me determine the severity
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Maybe, ask first and let me determine the severity
Godmod Other Events: Maybe, ask first
Other: You can sign any of my players should you wish (or draft from the WJHC), given how bad my own league is I'm happy to send them overseas, just shoot me a TG

A note on penalties: Græntfjallers will probably be perceived as dirty players by international standards, but they are not intentionally out to inflict cheap shots, but rather used to league rules that are laxer on checking. Most could not even spell ‘concussion protocol’.

A note on fighting: Be reasonable. Our players are here to skate, not fight, but will fight if provoked. Most should be physically able to handle themselves; I don’t object to you RPing your players ‘winning’ fights but don’t have them mop the ice with mine.

A note on pictures: Please do not use photographs of RL people/teams/stadiums and say they are my players/team/country.

What are our chances? A look at Group 2

Baker Park, Atlantian Oceania, Unranked
A new but well-prepared squad takes to the ice, and it's a shame they play us in their first ever game. It would be a lot of fun to play them later on in the competition, to see their growth from game one to game five. They'll have a hell of a challenge in reaching round two, but it's not entirely out of the question. Good luck to coach Wainwright and captain O'Halloran! Their squad comes from all over their league (and Banija's, with Ndumeke from the Mansfield Warriors), so we're not sure on the chemistry between teammates given they might not always play together at the domestic level - but that might be fine on their end.

Anthor, Atlantian Oceania, 74th
Our schedule starts with three Atlantian Oceanian opponents, with one brief North Pacific interlude, before finishing with a fourth Atlantian Oceanian fixture. The region remains a huge force in the sport, not just their presence in the top 10 of the WCoH rankings but supplying teams up and down each level of the sport. What they bring to the table remains a mystery for now, their late arrival in Graintfjall a common tactic to sow confusion.

Cordian Isles, Atlantian Oceania, 25th
Despite ranking 25th, the Cordian Isles have gotten a lot of extra work in during the AOHC and the Olympics. We believe them to be roughly comparable to Ko-oren, with a well established domestic scene (albeit that the Cordian one is popular all over the country), a clear idea of how the national team should operate, and contingency plans for if things don't work out immediately. From our (limited) research, the right wingers are a consistent threat regardless of the line, our best chances lie against their third line - as long as we don't pit our own third line directly against it. If it wasn't for the high octane attack we expect from them, they would be a fantastic option for the Ko-orenite national team to hire a dedicated national coach from there.

TJUN-ia, The North Pacific, 18th
The highest ranked opponent in this group and the only non-AO one. TJUN-ia are a regular part of our diet in many sports, and it was a matter of time before ice hockey also became part of the meetings. They're trying one last push with the current personnel before the nearly entirely 30+ squad must get some fresh blood, so it's up to us to stop the well-oiled machine. Let's go for hip checks, not hip replacements, folks.

Efnakia, Atlantian Oceania, Unranked
More Atlantian Oceanians, and more attacking teams. Hopefully they run into the same, common problem versus the Dragonflies: if you can't get a decent shot (and respond very quickly to the loose puck), you will be left covering a lot of ice with one or two players, which is exactly what we draw our opponents into doing. The Efnakian amateurs can learn a lot from their region-mates in the AOHC and the Olympics, so we expect them to show up to our game with a little more know-how than most new teams.

In a small group stage we only play five games, so no matter how bad of an off-day you're finding yourself in, you have to get results. Counting every game until the final, it's nine days of play where we're not looking for development, we're just looking for pure production as any early loss sets us up for difficult opponents later - and we shouldn't have to explain why losing late in the competition is a bad idea. That said, if the Dragonflies aren't in the Round of 16 in a little over a week's time, we'd be very surprised. Meeting the Cordian Isles and TJUN-ia, the strongest adversaries on paper, in the mid-to-late rounds doesn't really benefit them more than us, but we hoped to catch TJUN-ia out early in the group stage. Either way, we're expecting about four wins (regular- and overtime combined) and a fairly direct route into the knockouts.

Jacob Parsons's trip to the rink was a strange feeling for him.

He was mentally healthy for the first time in a while. He was on his medication and the regimen his doctors chose for him was one that allowed him to compete in the rink without feeling like he was in a fog. He was arguably as ready as he'd ever been for competitive hockey.

And yet, when he got to his locker and put on his equipment and slid his sweater over the pads, he knew as he prepared to trudge onto the rink and skate over to the Sarzonia bench that he would be staying there. He was the second choice goalkeeper behind the young Owen Franks.

Brett Tanguay, Sr. made the decision to go with Franks in the early days of training camp after a pessimistic report from the team's psychiatrist about Parsons's mental health. She and the manager had no way of knowing it would mark a turn for the better in the days following Tanguay's decision. Parsons did not take the demotion well, and he and Tanguay argued forcefully in the manager's office. For the first few days, Franks worked with third choice goalkeeper Yuri Evgenikov since Parsons refused to help him. However, after he got over his anger and disappointment, Parsons finally approached Franks.

However, Franks rebuffed Parsons -- at least at first. Finally, the goaltenders all were on the same page as the team prepared to play their final exhibition match at Bank of Sarzonia Arena in Nicksia. By the time they got to Alphabet Soup II, as the players took to calling Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland, they'd become a cohesive unit.

That may not have shown as much on the ice, however. Sarzonia prevailed in their opener, winning 7-3 over unranked Caplostein. Franks made 18 saves on 21 shots, but he allowed a couple of soft goals. Following the match, which saw Brett Tanguay, Jr. score a hat trick, Senior made the decision to go back to Parsons for the upcoming match against No. 35 Vilita and Turori.

"They're a dangerous side," Senior said of Vilita and Turori, which lost their opening match 4-2 to Nova Anglicana. "They'll be especially dangerous because they don't want to start out 0-2."

Sarzonia may carry the fifth rank in the hockey-playing multiverse, but don't look for this team to take anything for granted. Not after losing to Græntfjall in overtime in the quarterfinals of World Cup 44.

Junior noted the group stage for this World Cup of Hockey will be much shorter than the previous few, and said that meant there was "no room for error" in this group stage.

"We had 12 group stage matches last time out. We're just playing five now," he said. "If we slip up, it will hurt a lot more than if we played a long group stage."

People's Party Official 2021 Election Manifesto: Our Nation, Under Assault

We, the People's Party, have watched with horror as our beloved country has become increasingly captured, at every level, by a radical left who will stop at nothing to redefine what it means to be a Nova Anglican. From reckless spending that enslaves our children and grandchildren to debt, to promoting sexual and gender ideology in place of sound parental instruction, to ceding sovereignty to supranational institutions who have nothing but contempt for the average Nova Anglican, the left is pursuing an agenda at odds with everything upon which this nation was founded. We seek to defend faith, family, and freedom and restore normalcy to a world gone mad. Who will stand in the gap with us?

Immigration
-The government's current program of re-settling 155,000 Janseebuckian refugees over the year 2022 is utter fantasy. Not only will refugees overburden an already strained social safety net and take advantage of the wasteful "Layabout Support" program this government foolishly instituted, but it makes utterly no sense to accept hundreds of thousands of people when our allies barely lift a finger to help us. We propose a cap of 50,000 refugees, to be admitted only after thorough security screenings. All other refugees should be distributed to allied nations in a show of solidarity.

-The problem of illegal immigration to Nova Anglicana has only gotten worse as this government has approved ever-increasing social services with no regard for who can access them. Like moths to a flame, people from around the world break our laws to access free goodies from this government, which coddles them. Additionally, smuggling of illegal drugs and weapons by international gangs can be the only consequence of the lax border defense practiced by this government. We propose the turning back of all sea-based illegal immigrants or, if necessary, their offshore detention, and the stricter defense of our land borders, with physical barriers where necessary. To do this and to combat the flow of illegal drugs and weapons, we must hire hundreds of new Customs and Immigration Enforcement officers, outfit them with the necessary weapons, technology, and land and sea vehicles to effectively turn back all intruders.

-Even among legal immigrants, the refusal to adopt Nova Anglican traditions and customs or to effectively assimilate into mainstream society damages all of us. We propose prioritising English or French-speaking, higher-skilled immigrants, who have a proper respect for Nova Anglicana's religious and cultural traditions. We further propose limiting immigrant stipends and access to other welfare benefits or free healthcare, among new arrivals or those having been here for fewer than two years, to those who complete a year-long course in Nova Anglican values, customs, and way of life, as well as a concurrent English class.

Foreign Affairs
-Nova Anglicana stands best when she stands free of entanglements. Our foreign policy ought to be one of careful, considered, specific deals with other nations, not broad, open-ended commitments to poke our nose into any foreign event happening anywhere in the multiverse.

-The Esportivan Union has proven, just as we said, to be an expensive waste of time and bureaucracy. We have not received anywhere close to the level of benefit promised, and have sent many Anglican pounds to be squandered or put in the pockets of Esportivan bureaucrats. We call for another referendum next year on leaving the Esportivan Union and will campaign vigorously for a "YES" vote. It's time we stop wasting money and giving away authority to institutions that do nothing for us.

-We support the bill now in the Assembly of Esportiva to send a fact-finding mission to Ethane. The oppression of women, if it exists in Ethane, is a deplorable act. Should the Assembly find wrongdoing, we propose a campaign of individual nations taking action against Ethane and fully support restricting trade and re-shoring our supply chain with regards to Ethane.

-The question of Tumbra and the Northlands is a question of national sovereignty, not international meddling. Tumbra has the right, under international law, to expand into terra nullius, and this is exactly what they are doing. We call for the proper treatment of the various nomadic tribes that live there, and deplore the use of violence against the Tumbran state as they attempt to bring civilization to this area. Those calling for Tumbra's suspension or expulsion from the EU set a dangerous precedent for increased EU interference in national affairs.

National Defense
-The recent conflict in Nyowani Kitara has shown us that powerful nations can and will take advantage of smaller ones. Therefore, Nova Anglicana must have effective ways to protect herself. We propose a 50% increase in the defense budget by FY 2024-25, with the bulk of the investment going to equip our Armed Forces with the latest and greatest in military technology, as well as increasing the number of ships in the Sea Guard and planes in the Sky Guard. A vigilant nation is a protected nation, and under no circumstances will we fall asleep at our post.

Spending, Taxation, and Regulation
-The central government has been swelled beyond all recognition by years of unsustainable spending. While we were in government, we arrested reckless spending, but under the current government, they have repeated old patterns of disregard for the people's money. One principal cause of this is the unconscionable level of bureaucracy that has been allowed to build up. The number of people who work for the central government and the size and scope of its responsibilities have reached Euran proportions. We propose to reduce fiscal expenditure by 15% under current levels by FY 2024-25, and by 25% by FY 2027-28, and to cut thousands of unnecessary government bureaucrats.

-After we enacted sensible tax reform, this government has returned to punishing tax levels. These taxes stifle economic growth, squash hiring, and prevent needed investment in our nation's firms. We propose to eliminate the carbon tax and the corporate minimum income tax, as well as institute flat taxes for corporate income, capital gains, and inheritance. We further propose to reduce to two the number of tax brackets and eliminate the cap on charitable deductions. Tax simplification will reduce the tax burden on all citizens and ensure that businesses have the room to grow and continue to provide high-paying jobs for all citizens.

-Our nation's businesses are choked by job-killing regulations. Red tape stifles our economy, discourages foreign investment, and makes citizens distrust their government. We need a government that is nimble enough to respond to crises and approve sharp new ideas, not one encumbered by layers of bureaucracy that triple-checks every single bit of minutia that comes before it. We propose to eliminate 1,000 of the most job-killing and absurd regulations in our first year in office, and after that, to repeal two regulations for every one new regulation it may be necessary to propose.

Domestic Security
-The world is increasingly unsafe, both from external and internal threats. Deranged nations put all others at risk, while killers inside nations, their minds warped by radical foreign ideologies, keep many of us in a heightened state of fear. We deplore the recent budget cuts made by the Interior Ministry, and call for not only full restoration of the previous budget, but a 25% increase by FY 2024-25. Radical foreign terrorists must be surveilled and brought to justice and our security forces need the best resources and equipment available to them to keep us all safe.

-Crime threatens our communities, tearing apart neighbor from neighbor, making people afraid to go out, and hurting the ability of hard-working small business owners to make a living. While in government, we approved legislation to fund thousands of new police officers by FY 2021-22, but the radical left deliberately cut this funding, siding with criminals over ordinary citizens. We propose not only to restore this funding, but to double it, guaranteeing at least 5,000 new officers by FY 2024-25. Furthermore, these hardworking defenders of our community will receive any equipment they need to effectively combat crime, and we pledge the full co-operation and force of the central government in important investigations.

Agriculture
-The Nova Anglican farmer has been let down by years of neglect and burdensome regulation by the current government. We will stand up and proudly defend the Nova Anglican farmer's right to plant what he wants, when he wants, using the best tools and products available to him. We will eliminate agricultural and environmental regulations that prevent our farmers from earning a decent living. We further propose to increase funding to farmers who grow products critical to food security and our domestic supply chain, rewarding them for being hard-working patriots.

Energy
-Energy costs have become unsustainable for ordinary families in recent years due to the carbon tax and unnecessary regulations put in place by a government in thrall to radical environmentalists. We will reverse the trend and bring energy costs down. We pledge not only to repeal the carbon tax and unnecessary bureaucratic regulations, but to specifically expand through legislation the amount of land on which hydraulic fracturing can be done. This will increase energy supply for the nation and put extra money in the pockets of those who sell their mineral rights. We also pledge to massively expand the amount of drilling down in the Bay of Fundy and Atlantic Ocean, thus expanding oil supply, creating jobs, and bringing down fuel prices.

Education
-The primary concern of our party is the future of our country, which is under assault from the radical left. Our children must be brought up properly, not indoctrinated to hate Nova Anglicana, question parental authority, and their gender and sexuality. In public schools, we propose a patriotic curriculum that encourages pride in our Nova Anglican heritage and respect for Nova Anglican symbols, traditions, and customs. We propose to ban interpretations of our history that would undermine faith in God, pride in country, or the knowledge that every child has the same opportunity to succeed as any other. We further propose that sexual education be age appropriate rather than exposing primary schoolers to graphic descriptions of human sexuality, and in secondary schools, be geared towards abstinence. Any discussion of gender should focus on biological facts rather than twisting of universal truths by gender radicals.

-Parental control in education must be our overriding principle. In public schools, parents should have the right to view lessons or to pull their child out of classrooms where harmful or age-inappropriate material is taught. We propose money be appropriated for parental oversight officers, parents of children who can affirm that no teacher is undermining parental authority or contradicting family values. Outside of the public schools, we support the expansion of charter schools and the right of any parent to get their child a good education free from the bureaucracy of public schools. We propose tax credits for individuals who endow scholarships at private schools, and vouchers for thousands of children and parents who believe they would be better served at a school that aligns with their values. We propose to eliminate regulatory obstacles to homeschooling, so that any parent who wishes to give their child an education as they see fit is able to do so. Without parental control in education, our entire society will fall prey to the lies and distortion of the radical left.

Social Safety Net
-The current government's unconditional handout program has been an unmitigated disaster. Thousands of Anglican pounds are handed to individuals with no work requirement or oversight, damaging the economy, encouraging laziness, and wasting billions in taxpayer money, which must be paid for by ever-increasing borrowing or taxation. This is an assault on our values of hard work, independence, and prudent stewardship of other people's money. We propose to repeal all current government handouts to citizens (Income Support, rent/childcare payment, child benefit) and replace them with a flat benefit of AP4,000 per child per year, up to 4 children, subject to work requirements and fraud verification. Able-bodied, childless adults should not be able to suckle at the government teat. We further propose zero-interest loans to citizens with at least three children for the purpose of starting businesses or purchasing real estate. Through this, we can encourage hard work, support families, and ensure that taxpayer money goes to deserving citizens rather than layabouts or non-citizens.

-The Nova Anglican Health Authority is beset by complicated regulation and cannot effectively respond to the needs of the people. Private competition is the only obvious panacea for long waiting lines and inefficient spending.

OOC: Please note that this is an abridged version, as writing an entire manifesto/platform in the amount of detail usually done would be somewhat excessive. Imagine that there are the usual platitudes about patriotism, religion, law enforcement, etc, etc.

Nova Anglicana 4-2 Vilita and Turori

Goals: Messier (11:06 1st), Broussard (2:58 2nd), Caldwell (13:24 2nd), Coderre (5:15 3rd)

The sound of a hissing tea pot could be heard over the static of the now turned on TV, in the room with the TV, you could see three figures watching closely as the program started.

"Hello folks! My name is Atlas Gale and this is my co-host Emmett Bishop, and we are here to bring you Canadian Dominion, our very own hockey teams, first ever WCoH Game!" the man would shift in his chair looking at his co-host and soon he would speak again, with a calm and clear tone, "Alrigh so our team out there or also known as "The Fighting Geese" will be playing a seasoned team from what it looks like known as the Bollonischian National Ice Hockey Team well, from what we know they are a storied and very good team and known around the block in the WCoH, although they don't have many hockey cities from what we can see, their performance has been pretty consistant from what we have seen."

There would be a cut and we would see the first goal scored by #15 Guørún Jóhannsson on the BNIHT

"Hello this is Nathan David and I am amazed by this first goal; here we see Lewis Smith trying to catch up to Jóhannsson and with a quick snap shot on Jaxon Graham, who in all honesty should have been quicker on that blocker side. but we do see a beautiful goal in the first period and lets see if the Canadian Dominion team can counter this quick and easy goal for the Bollonischian team."

Another cut would be made, we would see the minutes in over time, the score would show 4 - 4, this was the last player on the shoot out and his name was Callum Boyle from St John's, Newfoundland.

"Alright, the Canadian Dominion team is at 2 in the shoot-out goal department, but at now we are at 2 - 2 for both teams.. One goal will put us up 3 - 2 and if they miss on their next shot we will take this game home.."

The 23 Boyle would skate to the center of the ice and get ready, soon he would pick up the puck and swiftly move down the ice, as the man moved quickly down the Ice he kept his head up and made sure to stay calm and well he moved again and started to handle the puck carefully and well a quick wrist shot it would hit the back of the net and when the goal noise sounded, he started to celebrate.
