I have no idea why he is still an umpire, I don't know any team who thinks he is competent.

Because the Umpire's Union is surprisingly powerful. Unless the union wants him gone, he's unfortunately not going anywhere.

The 60-year-old Hernandez is such a terrible umpire that he attempted to sue MLB for racial discrimination, citing the fact that he was not scheduled for any World Series games and had been passed over for promotions to umpiring crew chief. When that case made its way to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, Hernandez found that much like the teams he umpires for, he didn’t like the ultimate ruling.

United States District Judge J. Paul Oetken ruled in favor of Major League Baseball, stating that “the court concludes that no reasonable juror could find that MLB’s stated explanation is a pretext for discriminatory motive.” But that’s not all. The honorable Judge Oetken added, “The evidence shows beyond genuine dispute that an umpire’s leadership and situation management carried the day in MLB’s promotion decisions.”

It is now in the legal record, that Angel Hernandez is a terrible umpire. But again, we already knew that.

It's not so hard to believe this. For starters there are terrible owners and terrible players too. Personally, i think Hernandez is a dickhead and he's not the only ump that is one. Heck, at least Joe West has finally buggered on off the diamond.

It happens. Heck, I've been here 14 years and didn't know about the commercialization rule until I got a 3 day ban for it a couple months ago.

Anyway, baseball. The Yankees are first in the AL East and that makes me happy.

I hate the way it looks, it ruins the look of left and center field

Welp, after thirty years they realized we can't have nice things bc it looked so nice. Nice to see the Orioles doing better and nice to see players do something other than swing for the fences or strikeout. Batters are hitting triples again in Baltimore and that's exciting. Plus the pitching staff has much more confidence. Previously, top notch FA hurlers didn't want to come to Baltimore bc short fly balls could become HRs. Aesthetics aside, the new wall is great for the home team. That's what counts.

Apparently locals feel more attachment to minor league teams with individual identities than they do to teams who just name themselves after their parent club.

i'm a huge fan of the cedar rapids kernels, my semi-local minor league baseball team. i think part of it is them connecting to iowa through their name and merchandise. if they were just called the cedar rapids twins it wouldn't be the same.

I also wonder how much of it comes down to the parent club being a rival of the local favorite MLB team, so having an independent identity would be more palatable to the locals than copying the parent club's identity.

who cares about the minneapolis twins tho, those and the florida teams are the most forgettable in the league. twins, marlins, and rays all need to move to different cities.

Same thing with the Orioles AAA affiliate Norfolk Tides of the IL. I follow them on ESPN Radio 94.1. I open a second tab of crashing waves (at half volume) while listening to the play by play. Kinda neat.

Not anymore. Orioles are a legit MLB team this season, finally and over .500 ball since April 30th. Currently are fully capable of beating the opposing team on any day. Core players in their lineup like Mountcastle 1B, Hayes LF, Mancini DH, Mullins CF, Rutschman C and Santander RF are hitting and field their positions well. Austin Hayes in particular is having a breakout year. Jorge Mateo at SS has been phenomenal defensively to the point so his inability to hit a slider lately can be tolerated. Need upgrades at 2nd and 3rd base, they're still in minors. One is Gunnar Henderson and another is Jordan Westbrook, some others below AAA. Pitching staff vastly improved over last seasons crew, especially O's bullpen. Best new starter is 6' 8" Tyler Wells. OTOH, John Means is out for year getting Tommy John surgery. One can actually watch this team and find hope for the future.

Orioles are also second this season in walk off wins with 7. Yankees out front with ten.

Right now on July 8 the Baltimore Orioles sit just 4.5 games out of a playoff spot in the American League and are easily one of the best stories in baseball in 2022.
