Sarim Bridge Bowl - Everything Thread (SF-25 Jul/F-27 Jul)

Postby PotatoFarmers » Sat May 21, 2022 6:44 am

What is this Tournament about?
The inaugural Sarim Bowl is a contract bridge tournament for national teams. National teams, comprising of 3 pairs of players (and a non-playing coach), will compete each other in duplicate team bridge, and compete for the Sarim Bowl title. The format of this tournament is largely modeled after the Bermuda Bowl, which is a competition between national teams with no age or gender restrictions.

Format
Teams will compete against each other in a single double group round-robin format. Depending on the number of signups, each scorination will comprise of 2-3 matches in one go, with the top 8 4 teams entering a quarterfinals, semifinals and then finals. ICly, each match will comprise of 16 boards, played over a 2 hour period (officially 7.5 minutes per board), with the IMPs translated to a victory point scale. The Victory Points will then be collated and tabulated into an overall table.

Scorination
Scorination will be done using xkoronate, with a modified chess file generating Victory Points (instead of IMPs) margin between 2 teams.

Entry Rules
Nations will be allowed to submit one main entry and a puppet nation. Such a puppet must be declared as such.

Roleplay Guides
There is no requirements that the roleplay be bridge related. Roleplays about any topics under the sun is acceptable, though a small additional bonus will be provided for RPs that have interactions between participant nations.

Experience
I have hosted a World Lacrosse Championship, a Sepak Takraw World Cup, an Independent Associations Championship (IAC) - football tournament, a Melayu Archipelago Cup (MAC) - football tournament, and a few domestic football competitions as part of the IFCF.

Sorry for not responding to this earlier, some RL matters caught up with me. With the timeline to the end of CoH and everything more clearer, I will set a hard deadline of the 11.59pm of 26th June Eastern Time. After that, I will convert this thread to an Everything thread (or open a new one if there are a lot more signups) and then set a starting date of 1st July in the morning of Eastern Time.

Sorry for the 1 week delay. As we have 7 signups, the following changes will be made to the format:

1. The format will switch to a double round robin instead of a single round robin.
2. The format will now have the top 4 teams in semifinals instead of having a preliminary quarterfinals.

This thread will be used as an everything thread. Home information will be edited into OP asap. First day of cutoff will be next Wednesday, at 2-3pm UTC time.

Host Note: Due to technical difficulties, the first cutoff will be delayed till this Friday. This will also allow time for participants to submit their respective RPs based on the IC information & my sample roster as provided below.

Inaugural Sarim Bridge Bowl - Host Information

Welcome to Poafmersia! The Ministry of Business and Trade (MBT), through the Poafmersian Tourism Board (PTB), has published various guides to Poafmersia, giving visitors from around the multiverse some information about the Poafmersian culture, heritage, and a guide to the various states and major cities in Poafmersia. The guides are often never exhaustive, and depending on the group of visitors and their purposes, PTB often customise these guides to allow them to be more informed prior to the nation of Poafmersia. In conjunction with the Ministry of Arts, Sports and Culture (MASC), the PTB has published this version of the sports guide - for fans and visiting teams coming to Poafmersia for the Sarim Bridge Bowl.

All about Poafmersia
Poafmersia is a really huge country located in The North Pacific, with a size of 1.78 million square kilometers. Home to approximately 650 million residents, the country is well known for its really idealistic policies and governance system. Many Poafmers consider the nation to be at the forefront of "pioneering government policies", ranging from her environmental policies, her system of governance, as well as building a multicultural society. Even though the majority belong to the Jaffan race, Poafmersia is home to 27 ethnicities in total, according to government estimates. The true proportion of the ethnic groups, however, is not official tracked, under the "Ethnic Protection Act" which forbids collection of data related to ethnicity.

Transportation
Many visitors may find themselves unused to the transportation system in Poafmersia. The nation's emphasis on environmental protection has made public transport the main method of transport for Poafmers and visitors alike. While there are inter-city roads that are open for private vehicles, these vehicles are not allowed with many city limits, including Trimidau Island, City of Mancodas, City of Dalaris, Fiskadaha City, and Holhot, among other places. For small groups who require personalised transport, they would typically charter minibuses or electric taxis, which are readily available in big cities. Otherwise, the rail system or the public buses is the main method of travel.

Between cities, there are inter-city railways, as well as cross-state buses, that allow for travel from one side of the country to other. For smaller counties and townships, there are also shuttle train and bus services that serve these areas. Because such places may be out of the place and may not be as well connected, residents in these places may be more likely to own private vehicles. There are rules and regulations in place governing the ownership of these vehicles, as well as the type of vehicles. Many major inter-city railways have express tracks for express services, that would allow for quicker travel alternatives. There are also 4 high-speed rail services that serve different parts of the country, namely the Mancodas-Fiskadaha Express (between Mancodas and Fiskadaha City); the Trimidau-Dalaris Rail (between City of Dalaris and Trimidau Island); the Holhot-Fiskadaha Line (between Fiskadaha City and Holhot, with selected stops at major cities such as Sarim, Jackinson and Paishi-jak); and the North-South Railway (starting at Madaris, stopping in the outer limits of Greater Mancodas, Fiskadaha City, before moving on to Georgetown, on the inner limits of the City of Dalaris).

Culture
Poafmersia is very welcoming to foreign visitors who are exploring the country. The people's openness to visitors was something that couldn't be taken for granted a decade ago - when Poafmersia was largely isolationist. Sports has been a major avenue where Poafmers have gained exposure to foreign nations, especially in football, which is the most popular and successful sport in Poafmersia. Other major sports include volleyball, hockey (both field and ice hockey), badminton and aquatics, though the skill level of the sportsmen largely varies.

In Poafmersia, racial and gender stereotypes are frowned upon. In many sports, men and women co-exist in national leagues, and gender neutral terms are largely preferred. As such, conversations that crosses the racial and gender lines will probably get you into trouble, so visitors should be careful of that. Care for the environment is something that is extremely unique in Poafmersia. Visitors in hotel rooms would be expected to sort out their waste between recyclables and non-recyclables. At restaurants and dining places, food wastes are chargeable, and diners are reminded to request for smaller portions if necessary. The country has largely eliminated use of plastic cups, cutlery and bags. At shopping malls, people bring recyclable bags or buy paper bags; at drink stalls, people bring their own bottles and tumblers. Visitors to Poafmersia are also expected to abide by these environmentally-friendly guidelines, and there are reminder announcements played at major ports of entry.

Host Location - Sarim Convention Centre (SCC), Sarim, Tikahs
Tikahs, the center of Poafmersia, home to Fiskadaha City, the capital of Poafmersia, is also the main financial hub of Poafmersia. This state is the most developed state in Poafmersia. Home of many developments, many financial headquarters, and offices. Tourists would mainly want to come to Tikahs for the amusement parks, the casinos. Businessman would come for Tikahs' numerous conventions, the various business meetings. It is also the main entry point into Poafmersia (through the Fiskadaha International Airport).

The tournament will be held at Sarim Convention Centre, which is also the typical host venue for the large-scale domestic bridge tournaments. Located 90 minutes by bus from Fiskadaha International Airport and 3 hours from the main city centre, Sarim Convention Centre is one of the 2 main MICE event locations in Poafmersia (the other being the smaller Mancodas Exhibition Centre), with Poafmersia aiming to use these 2 locations to set up a MICE tourism sector in the country. Sarim Convention Centre is part of the biggest tourist complex in the city, comprising of the Shoppes @ SCC (a shopping mall focusing on luxurious goods), the 4,500-room Jefferson Hotel, as well as the Goldlocks Casino. Sarim is also where the biggest belt of casinos are located in the country, so to Poafmers, having professional players play bridge in SCC is widely seen as a "peaceful gambling" option when compared to the chaos in the casinos.

For visitors who are interested in watching (kibitzing) the games, they will be replayed live online at bridgesim.pf, an online site developed by the PBCA for players to play bridge online.

About Contract Bridge in Poafmersia
Membership in the Poafmersian Contract Bridge Association (PCBA) has risen by tenfold over the past 3 years, with the number of full members at a staggering 17 thousand members as at last count. This has led to the formation of city-based sub-associations. At the last PCBA Extraordinary General Meeting, there was also a plan approved for a nation-wide Poafmersian Bridge League to replace the annual Jefferson Bridge Cup, named after Harley Jefferson, the late founder of PCBA who started the sport in the country 2 decades ago. This Poafmersian Bridge League would allow for multiple smaller tournaments and more frequent league games to help the players practice their bridge skills.

Poafmersian Team Roster
For participation in the Sarim Bridge Bowl, it was taken from a selection camp comprising the top 3 teams in the 16th edition of the Jefferson Bridge Cup. A team comprising 3 pairs of players and a non-playing coach was selected as the Poafmersian representatives in this tournament.

Partnership 1: John Hopkins, 28/Sarah Hopkins, 28
The Hopkins twins are four-time winners of the mixed pairs category in the Jefferson Bridge Cup, even clinching the overall top spot in the matchpoint pairs tournament at the 15th edition of the Jefferson Bridge Cup. They are widely considered as the masters of the Strong Club bidding system in the country, having done extensive research into how to modify the widely-played Precision system to counteract against aggressive pre-empts and awkward minor suit bids. Though their exact system is not well documented, they did release a "lite version" of their bidding system document for reference.

Partnership 2: Mark Heckerin, 28/Johnathan Sandsworth, 27
Best buddies since college, they were introduced to bridge in college by their fellow friends. To climb all the way to the top of the playing field was not something that expected when they started 8 years ago. But after pulling a series of shock results against many top pairs, their partnership came into the limelight. Heckerin is widely known for his card play skills - especially when identifying the trick know as "the squeeze". Sandsworth, on the other hand, is well known for inventing the Sandsworth transfer system - a system which involves transfer overcalls in competitive play. Apart from that, they mainly play a standard 2/1 bidding system.

Partnership 3: Joe Dickson, 56/Biden Ryklian, 54
Dickson and Ryklian is considered a pair of the "old guards" - the close friends are one of the 5 pairs across the nation that have participated in every edition of the Jefferson Bridge Club. Which also explains their rather conservative play style - they always joke that they are unsuited to play matchpoints against the really aggressive "younger generation". However, in an IMPs team format, you can count on the two for their stability - typically they won't make big mistakes that cost the team big swings, but against equal level opponents, they might not always be able to squeeze out that one or two overtricks that you would need to get that 1 IMP. Typically, that isn't much of a problem. And their understanding of each other's bidding habits often negates those overtricks in games, since they survive hugely competitive auctions really well. They mainly play a standard 2/1 bidding system, without much frills.

Non-playing Coach: Sandra Handris, 41
She wanted to participate in the tournament, but her husband, who happens to be her main bridge partner, has work commitments. Nevertheless, she took up the role as the non-playing coach for the team. Her strong instincts during defence made her one of the more feared opponents in the Poafmersian bridge scene, as any declarer mistakes would be quickly caught by her with the correct tricks. She is a strong advocate of bridge tempo, utilising the entire notion of tempo to disrupt the opponent's card play and thought process. Maybe it also relates to her job as a counsellor and psychologist by profession.

Interview with Barbara Button, the coach of the Kriegiersien Bridge team.

“Your team lost and won a game each clearly. It is my understanding that in the match against Græntfjall you attacked one of the opponent players verbally? Is that true?”

“I wanted to break their concentration and reminded them, among other things, of the last Handball match between our nations.”
“Doesn’t seem to have worked though? And isn’t that unfair?”

“No. This is a mind game, like most sports. I don’t see any problem here.”

“The last Kriegiersien championship ended in a brawl and many injured, the title defender bitten by the dog of his 89 year old opponent before latter got a heart attack while swinging his staff at a ten year old kid. That is why the Top Players couldn’t attend here, because they are in the hospital.”

“Yes, this isn’t some girly sport like football. And if you see how disgusting certain people are forcing and bid...only natural that you have to react to that…”

“At least here is no alcohol involved.”

“I think that takes away much of the fun, skill and excitement. One schnapps after every discard shows who has stamina.”

“Don’t you think you are overdoing it? It is just a card game.”

“How dare you to say that? They can be happy that we don’t play it like in Kriegiersien as full contact bridge. We are following the international rules and customs. And we will win this. Mark my words!”

“Please put your finger away from my nose.”

Sorry for the 12 hour delay. With that in mind, the next cutoff will be at the end of the cutoff period, at around 3pm UTC/11am Eastern. From this round, I have also included the IMPs translation for reference. Typically, one side making game (3NT/4 Major/5 minor, a common contract to reach with the partnership reaching 24-25 points or more) while the other side going down 1 will cause a 10-12 IMPs difference.

Round 3
Gortolekua 1.56–18.44 Poafmersia (Poafmersia wins by 43 IMPs)
Delaclava 15.19–4.81 Kriegiersien (Delaclava wins by 21 IMPs)
Sarzonia 16.26–3.74 StrayaRoos (Sarzonia wins by 27 IMPs)

Round 4
Kriegiersien 5.2–14.8 Sarzonia (Sarzonia wins by 19 IMPs)
Poafmersia 17.97–2.03 Delaclava (Poafmersia wins by 39 IMPs)
Græntfjall 2.28–17.72 Gortolekua (Gortolekua wins by 37 IMPs)

Sarim Bowl Round-robin VPs
1 Delaclava 55.96

Another Interview with Barbara Button, the coach of the Kriegiersien Bridge team.

"So, you lost two further duels. What do you think about that?"

"I guess we tried too hard."

“What do you mean?”

“Somehow you get a penalty when you are shouting at your enemy..”

“You mean opponent?”

“..your enemy and laugh into their faces after the first trick..”

“Is it true that you have been given a warning in the last match and are in danger to getting booted?”

“They can try, I will fight like...oops..”

“She has fallen over. Can someone help?”

An hour later...an interview with Bob Builder, the new coach of the team.

“First congratulations to be the new team captain and coach. Do you feel prepared for that?”

“Thank you. I was always prepared. We will do it now in a behaved manner.”

“Your predecessor is said to have some problems with alcohol, this seems to be a common theme of Kriegiersien athletes in the last time. How is she?”
“Far away. I am sure the team now can focus on the game itself. I have already given them advice how to work together and stay strong. I think now we will improve.”
“Any special guidelines for your players?”
“Our opponents aren’t playing very aggressive, on the contrary, very calm. Maybe we have to copy this style. Or just come up with better tricks.”
“What does that mean?”
“Actually I have no idea. But we will surely find out. But first we are going shopping together, Lord Veder has invited us to spend some money to lighten up.”
“Have much fun there then. Last question: Did you know that the servers crashed because so many people in Kriegiersien watched the online stream?”
“That is great. I mean that so many people are watching us playing with cards.”
He leaves waving with a big shopping bag in his hand. The interviewer shakes her head after he is gone.

“What a clueless freak. Oh… are we still on?”

OOC Note: Due to RL delays, and in consideration of the late cutoff of the last one, I will be delaying every cutoff by 24 hours. This means the next cutoff for Round 5&6 will be on Wednesday, or in 20 hours time. I will also be working on some RPs to introdyce contract bridge rules and some tricks, based off personal RL experience and some reference to real-life games and writeups.

Another interview with Bob Builder, the now not that new coach of the team.

“Your team won against StrayaRoos convincingly. How did you do?”
“I gave the team pep talk, told them that they did good, that they have it in them… after a while they smiled at me and gave me a Rubik’s Cube. And when I was done with it they had won.”
“Your last game is against the host, the first of the table, Poafmersia. Do you think you can win this?”
“I am sure that they can. And if not, they will have learned something. As far as I understand it we need just a few more Imps. Even though I don’t understand why collecting small demons is involved, but that seems to be typical for card games. You gotta catch em all!”

“I wish your team good luck.”

Notice: Due to personal RL life schedule clashes over the last 2 days, and potential problems on alternate weekday nights due to personal events, I have made the further decision to delay the schedule of Round 7 & 8 to 24 hours later. Thereafter, scorination will resume as per normal, at a slightly earlier time of 1-2pm

Introduction to Contract Bridge, originally published as 30 days of Bridges, is a series of articles published by the Poafmersian Contract Bridge Association (PFCBA) for the major newspapers in the country, as part of a series on the various sports in our nation. The version as published here is a concise version of the entire series, made just enough for newcomers to understand the sport and learn some basics. The original series comprised of a month's worth of articles, which also included introduction to various bidding systems like Precision, Polish Club, as well as some cardplay techniques like the squeezes and endplay. Should there be another opportunity, those advanced articles will be released in a separate series.

Introduction to Contract Bridge - The Basics

Bridge. Not the structure which we use to get across drainages and water bodies. It is a type of trick-taking game, where 4 players, comprising of 2 pairs, will work togethe to collect as many tricks to fulfill their contract (what they bidded). Like most trick-taking games, it is played using the 52 cards in a poker deck (except the jokers). However, in this game, it is not an individual effort to reach the goal, but rather, an effort across a partnership (or even multiple partnerships) in order to reach the goal as determined by the contract. In this game, there is also an aspect of a "bidding phase", something that isn't quite the same as compared to many trick taking games out there.

To understand how to play bridge, it is important to have knowledge in both phases of the game. The first is known as bidding. It is where a partnership will make bids in order to achieve the optimal contract. You can think of contracts quite literally. In the literal sense, a contract is an agreement by one party to provide a particular good or service. The same applies here - the partnership is aiming to bid for the optimal contract, to showcase how many tricks they can take using their cards. Contracts start from 1 of Clubs - the smallest possible bid. This is followed by 1 of every suit in the standard order - Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades. The suit in the bid reflects the trump suit - basically, the suit which is always the biggest in any trick. After 1 of every suit, there is this thing called the No Trump - which means the partnership doesn't want to play with any trump suit. This is followed by 2 of every suit, 2 No Trump, 3 of every suit, 3 No Trump...you get the idea. Bidding a contract of level 1 means the partnership agrees to take 7 tricks, level 2 means 8 tricks, all the way till the maximum of level 7, or all 13 tricks. Unlike in other trick taking games, where 13 tricks is rare, in contract bridge, achieving 13 tricks is very possible depending on the cards dealt to the pair - we will talk more about it in the cardplay section.

Even among the 35 contracts available for the partnership, there are also various "tiers" of contracts. In particular, they reflect tiers of scores that are dictated by a common scoring system. To explain this entire scoring tier system, we first have to explain what are "Minor Suits" and "Major Suits". Basically, clubs and diamonds are placed in the first category while hearts and diamonds are placed in the second. Major Suits are generally worth more than the minor suits, due to the way the scoring system of bridge was set up. As such, bidding is typically major-oriented, as we will explain in a later article.

To go back to the topic of tiers of contracts, there are 4 main tiers - part score, game, slam, and grand slam. We start from the biggest, the grand slam. These are level 7 contracts - partnership says they are able to collect all 13 tricks. Because of the difficulty of doing so, the score for such a contract is really huge as compared to the other tiers. This is followed behind by the slam, which are level 6 contracts. Still quite a lot of points to grab here, but there is a certain gap between slam contracts and grand slam contracts. The game contracts are the more common contracts in tournament play - this tier of contracts award quite a healthy amount of points and they are easy to reach. To reach game, one would have to bid at least level 3 with no trumps, level 4 with majors, and level 5 with minors. Now you can see the difference - majors are definitely preferred, with no trumps slightly behind. No trump contracts are an art of their own - while not easy to play because of a lack of trump suit, no trump games have lower requirements and should be a better alternative to minor games. The rest of the contracts are known as part score contracts - they award little, but making the contract gives positive points, and positive points are better than negative points, so, well, they aren't too bad.

With the 4 tiers of contracts in play, it is than very important to make sure the partnership bid for a correct tier of contract. At this point, without any sense of what the points table is, it is difficult to imagine the level of reward. Have a link to scoring summary to notice the huge difference made.

In the next article, we will talk about some basic bidding using the common 2 over 1 system, which is the basic system that everyone in Poafmersia will start learning from.

The Tim Krieg Times
(former The Timey Times)

Scandal!!!

Scandal at Sarim Bridge Bowl

The Kriegiersien team awaited, after beating Gortolekua, to play round 10, but it never came.

Instead they played Round 8 again and lost against Delaclava.

The humble players from Kriegiersien reacted with “I don’t know what you are talking about you [..]” (Veder) and “Oh, but that was just a small formatting error[..]” (Schimmel), but we know what that is.
A mean attempt of the hosts to break the concentration of our glorious players. But don’t let yourself be confused, guys.

Gogo Bridge Bowlers!
Forza Kriegiersien!
