[Q] Why is the [warn] code available to all?

Postby The Orwell Society » Fri May 27, 2022 9:29 am

I was playing around with different codes and the preview function and found out that the [warn] code worked for me, a non-mod. Of course, I didn't post it, but that brought me to a question: If one could get in serious trouble for using the [warn] text and impersonating moderation, why are we non-mods able to use it? Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just remove access to the code for all non-mods?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I decided to put it in moderation instead of technical do to it concerning mods moreso that the code itself.

I believe this was supposed to be something connected with an report system to the mods? maybe to warn them one more time like this and they will send his messages to them? i dont know.

Any time a normal user uses the [warn] code, they would most likely be deleted. If I were to use it right now out of context as an example, I would most certainly get in serious trouble.

The [warn] tag is just normal BBcode and, per this post from Reploid Productions 2015, there's no way to restrict who can and cannot use a specific BBcode.

Yeah, only newer versions of phpBB has that feature. The forum software is pretty old.

This version of phpBB has no concept of BBcode restrictions.
That is, any user who can post can use any BBcode.
Yes, that sadly includes [warn].

On the topic BBcode, if it is already set by phpBB and can't be modifyed by the Nationstates admins, why do we have custom, NS-exclusive code like this?

Code: Select all

We can create new BBCodes like the OSRS and [help] ones quite easily; it's just a matter of going into the admin panel and writing up what the BBCode is and what HTML/CSS that translates into. We just have no way to restrict the ability to use any of them. That's one of the things on the agenda for the eventual forum overhaul, presumably whenever hell freezes over. >_<

That's what I thought: You can't prevent the use of the warn code by locking us plebes out, but you can warn and ban those non-mods who do
