Do you Listen to Music too Much?

Postby Forsher » Fri May 13, 2022 10:59 pm

If you've ever done even the slightest amount of people watching, I'm sure you'll have noticed that people have headphones in or on all the time. Now, if all these Audible ads on Youtube are anything to go by at least some of them aren't listening to music, but I think most of them are.

Going for a run? Music.

Catching a train? Music.

Having a bath? Music.

Waiting to drive the get away car? Music.

You get the idea.

But have you ever asked yourself, do you listen to music too much?

Certainly, you don't want to be one of those mainstream lameos that can't go for a walk or a run without their tunes, right? And, well, that's basically the quality of the argument in the Medium post (semi-paywall) Stop Relying on Music. Nevertheless, I think the question is of interest.

For my part... bring on the music. I get bored without a soundtrack. At least, at home. Outside the domicile, I'm rarely tempted. It follows that I really don't think there's any particular reason not to listen to music.

So, what say ye, NSG? Do you listen to music too much? Is it even possible to listen to music too much?

I am not a huge music listener (I don't even own a pair of headphones, if you want some complete horror), but there is absolutely no evidence that listening to a lot of music is in any way harmful. To the contrary, we know that music has physical and mental benefits- benefits that even translate to plants!

So unless you're destroying your eardrums playing it at max volume, play away.

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Not so much I think.

Whenever I am outside, I can't stand it if I wear headphones. I always want to stay vigilant especially whenever I am inside a Public Transport.

At home, that's when I am free to listen to music but I always make sure that the volume is just right so that I can still hear what is happening to my surroundings.

I have noticed this personally, though for me it's more podcasts than music. If you do it often you can make doing work contingent on having something you like going on at the same time. Which eventually risks making the thing you like doing less fun because it's associated with doing boring things, as well as eroding your ability to do basic tasks without layering some other compensatory stimuli over the top.

Unless I have someone to talk to, I absolutely refuse to go into town without music to distract me from the noise, and I don't think that's a problem.

What? Sorry, couldn’t hear you. Music? Uh, the Irish Rovers. What do you mean that wasn’t your question?

Maybe, maybe not.
I do listen to music when I'm bored, but I am considerate
enough that I turn down the volume so that other people don't go crazy due to the dubstep music that I listen to.

I have to fervently state that it is impossible to listen to music too much. It's music, not bloody people.

I can’t get to sleep without having music playing, but I can get through most of the rest of my day without music. I’ll usually avoid listening to it on public transit/in other circumstances where the music won’t be completely audible, because I’m one of those weirdos that prefers to pay attention to music when I’m listening to it. But back when I had speakers it was an essential component of any kind of work; I can’t work without multitasking. (Nowadays I’m stuck without speakers for the foreseeable future, probably indefinitely, but I have stimulants for the work stuff.)

That said, I have been told I listen to music too much, and I probably agree with that. It is a bit excessive to keep music playing all night when I won’t even be hearing most of it. It’s just that when I don’t do that, I also don’t get any sleep.

I listen to music all the time, whether in the car, working, or just chilling in bed. I never listen to music at the expense of whatever I may be doing, so I don't think I do it too much, per se; if anything, listening to music helps me out more often than it distracts me.

Chartreuse is my favorite color.

I'm annoyed that I've been called out so much. I regularly have my Spotify playlist of all my favourite songs on shuffle (and occasionally looping the songs I like the most that day).

Even when I'm on YouTube, I occasionally listen to songs that aren't on Spotify (either through them being unofficially released or the artist being not on Spotify)
