South Americanastan Matchup Does Not Disappoint! Krauts Defense Stands Strong To Make It A 3-0 Start

Image
The Kraut defense swarms Abram Fairbanks after a 4th quarter sack to force a 57 yard field goal

2-0 or not, most didn't see South Americanastan coming in and punching this Krauts team in the mouth to open things up. The defense had surrendered plenty of points in their first two outings, but that had been so far overshadowed by the John Garrett-led offense hanging 40+ on anyone that stood in their way.

Well, Jabyess Hawkins and the media had predicted it - this offense ran a lot of concepts that left defenders scratching their heads, and after a decent drive pushed them inside the 30, quarterback Jimmy Echavaria handed it off to wideout Tanner Wesco on a jet sweep. When that got bottled up, Wesco pitched it back to a waiting Jan Halmion, who'd been trailing behind him. It looked like a triple-option type run, and when Gideon Kearse finally launched to secure a massive loss, Halmion let the ball rip. It was admittedly a bit of a duck, but Alexander Ackermann didn't have the speed to make up lost ground, and it would be running back Sean Forrester who caught the opening touchdown of this game. It's only the second time Ranoria's trailed now through three games, but no one was too worried with the lineup we boast.

John Garrett marched his way down the field with that lethal precision that made him a terror, but it wasn't without setbacks. The Bears defensive line was smaller, but they were fast. And with a pair of massive tackles on Ranoria's side, well, there was a bit of a mismatch. Bill Wisniewski in particular cooked left tackle Vince Vermillion on a first down and brought Garrett down just as he was getting through with his drop steps for a big loss, and Walter Olzmauer would come away with one against an aging Tyler Williams. Garrett responded with a dart of a touchdown to none other than Johnny Farmer over Pat Larson. Larson had baited the throw to an extent, and it likely would have worked against most teams. But when he closed the distance and went to rip the ball away from Farmer, the tight end simply clutched the ball to his chest, locking the DB's arms in, and then tossed Larson aside like a ragdoll with a flip of his hips before trotting into the end zone.

But alas, Barry Chlorid missed his first kick of the tournament. He may be the best placekicker in RFL history, but he's still a Ranorian kicker. The Bears would retain a 7-6 lead in this bout.

Now, as with the other side of the ball, there's a massive size discrepancy between these two units up front. Ranoria's smallest starting defensive lineman ever comes in at 230 pounds in Abram Fairbanks, and they don't field anyone else under 270. And besides Ron Irleaman getting away with holding calls, donkey punches, and even facemasks left and right (it's amazing what you can do if you know where the officials are at), that front five was battered all day. South Americanastan totaled just 31 rushing yards on the day, under 2 yards per attempt, and most of that came on wrinkles in their playbook like jet sweeps. Skilled as their front five were, the sheer brawn and talent of Ranoria's front four was the defining factor of this game as they would combine for 7 sacks and 6 tackles for loss alone.

And hell, props to Jimmy Echavaria for making anything happen while being hit as often as he was. The young passer made sure not to test the Kraut secondary with many deep balls and instead diced them up underneath when he could.

On that note, their next two drives ended in punts. Robert Malone placed the second inside the fifteen, and when Garrett dropped back on first down, his timing was just a hair off. Again, it would be Wisniewski who hit him as he threw, and Red Matrikan was fast enough to snatch it right out of the air. And with a quick drag-slant combo that left the underneath man with a downfield blocker, Jimmy Echavaria only needed two attempts to let his second touchdown strike of the day go, and suddenly Ranoria was down 14-6.

"Yeah, we decided we didn't like that very much," admitted head coach Raul Nieler at the post-game presser, "Those Bears have a tricky offense, and they were giving us trouble. Our bread and butter was struggling just because of their damn speed rushers, so...we ran the ball.

Vice Jackson III had 3 carries for 21 yards in the first half. In the second, he'd get 14 totes and make them good for another 94 with a touchdown to go along with 6 carries and 41 yards for Apollo Esther. The offense was far from consistent - the Bears defensive line came in with plenty of stunts to get their smaller four through and got a few fortunate flags their way after the two teams tussled a bit - but ultimately, on Ranoria's next three drives, they sapped away 16 minutes of gameclock and put up 10 points to take their first lead of the game with just minutes to go.

Jimmy Echavaria had a little over four on the clock to get into field goal range. The implications of Barry Chlorid's missed PAT in the first quarter became very real as he drove his squad downfield, and with a timeout and twenty two seconds left, they had a 51 yard field goal available.

Of course, they decided to take one more play to make things a bit easier on Allan Shepherd. The closer they got, the more margin for error he'd have with his foot placement, and the less time Ranoria would have to try and pull a miracle out their ass in the closing seconds.

Only, disaster struck. Abram Fairbanks was normally a burner off the edge, and he'd been going that route all game long. This time, he took one step to Ron Irleaman's outside, planted, and then came right back in. Irleaman had no chance to react when Fairbanks's arm was thrust up under his armpit and he unceremoniously dumped the lineman onto the ground in a classic hump move. Echavaria's reaction was quick, stepping up to try and preserve what yardage he could, but he couldn't escape the shoulder-to-rib impact that nearly knocked the ball loose.

Fairbanks immedietely got to his feet and celebrated, if you can call whatever primal scream came out a celebration, as the defense flocked around him. The Bears called their last timeout with just four seconds on the clock, and Allan Shepherd took the field.

He had the leg for it, and the kick got past the hurdling mass of Ranorian defenders. Spin looked good, and with the lack of wind in the superdome, it was hard to tell if the angle was right until the last instant when the ball spun harmlessly a foot to the right of the crossbars.

You can imagine that the capacity-crowd in a closed dome sounded like a thunderstorm when the officials gave their signal. The Ranorian sideline celebrated while Shepherd unclipped his helmet and pressed his lips together, frustrated of course at the ending. Jimmy Echavaria - face hidden by a towel - let his shoulder sag a little more when the noise revealed who had won. He'd done just enough to give his team a chance, but in the end they'd needed more.

"Incredible performance by those guys," said John Garrett after the win, "We knew we'd be in for a dogfight, and that's what we got. I've got to give props to our boys up front on both sides, they won that game for us." Garrett, despite his praise, was sacked five times in this outing. With his injury history, beatings like that are unacceptable.

"Sloppy," was all left tackle Vince Vermillion had to say about his play, "We've got a lot of cleaning up to do up front. Can't let our brother get hit like that."

Despite their misgivings, they have a chance to right their wrongs with a rematch against Lisander in what will be the second match of a 3-game home stand for the Krauts.

The wait in the clinic seemed to last forever.

Matt Vargas had received a negative result in his latest SARS 2 novel Coronavirus test, but he needed both the rapid test he'd received over the counter at the local pharmacy and a negative result from the clinic he was sitting in now in order to receive clearance for the match against Delaclava. He was fortunate. He was fully vaccinated and he was asymptomatic, but in accordance with team protocols, he was required to sit out the match against Venmere.

Old protocol, he thought to himself as he recalled the need for the protocol when the virus broke out a couple of years previously. The aggressive approach President Haffner chose to attack the virus with meant it had minimal impact as opposed to perhaps other places where a similar pandemic affected life much more harshly. Fewer than 29,000 Sarzonians perished as a result of the virus, although thousands more suffered from long-term effects of the virus. However, the virus did result in some reforms to the Sarzonian social safety net that have also caused a drop in crime.

For Vargas, however, he was waiting because the Incorporated Gridball Federation didn't see fit to revise their virus protocols. It forced punter Evelyn Sutton to become a placekicker for the day, but Sarzonian national gridball team manager Gavin Davis realised from her struggles against Venmere that he couldn't have her pull double duty as a punter and a place kicker. He also found quarterback Cameron Stallworth was not the man to serve as a reserve holder on place kicks. Davis had two lines on his office phone working. One was waiting on the verdict from Vargas and whether he could kick against Delaclava. The other was waiting for an answer from the manager of the college gridball team.

Vargas was sitting in an isolation booth at the clinic whilst Davis was waiting in his office at Joe Gibbs Stadium for the results. Davis had managed to talk enough people into having a collegiate kicker at tryouts in the event the Sarzonian national gridball team had to make a quick change at kicker. The only question for Davis was whether this particular kicker would be allowed to compete with the national team considering the prickly nature of the most recent communications he had with that team's manager.

Finally, mercifully, a female voice cut into Vargas's thoughts inside the booth.

"Mr. Vargas?"

"Yes?"

"Hi, we've got the results," nurse Elena Batcheler said, holding a clipboard. She had a stern look on her face and Vargas thought, oh fuck to himself as she looked the type to judge you on whether you used your knees to bend down to tie your shoes or you bent your back. He looked up at her and then saw the frown on her face quickly turn upward.

"You tested negative," she said. "You're clear to return to the team." Now it was Vargas's turn to smile widely. He saw her open the door to the isolation booth and motion with her right arm for him to get the hell out of Dodge.

"DId you hear that?" Vargas asked into his mobile as he had its speaker function set up. He didn't hear a response from Davis, so he texted him, "I tested negative!"

Meanwhile, Davis heard the other line pick up.

"James Arthur."

"Hi Jim, it's Gav," Davis said, half expecting Arthur to hang up on him again.

"Whaddya want?" Arthur replied curtly.

"I, uh, was going to ask if you could send Matt Andersen to us for a tryout."

"Wait, Gavin?" Arthur said as he suddenly realised it was Davis on the other end. "You said you want Andersen to come in for a tryout?"

"Yes," Davis said. "He made quite the impression on the brass when he hit that field goal against Northern Moravica last year. And that field goal against Sadeg State this year."

"Hell yeah you can!" Arthur said, not even attempting to hide his excitement. A college kicker was getting a shot with the national team, and with players who were typically the best of the best in professional gridball, so for a college kicker to even get the call to come in for a tryout was a big deal.

Davis had one other question he was considering asking Arthur whilst he had him on the line, but Arthur's tone of voice when he'd introduced himself dissuaded Davis from asking that particular question.

As for Arthur, he'd watched the three Sarzonian national team matches thus far, in particular, the Delaclava loss. He would easily point to four different times when he would have called a different play from what Davis had in mind, but he was still committed to his job and only his job because in his mind, the IGF Board hadn't gotten their heads out of the collective asses yet.

When the team gathered at Dave Wilson Stadium and were standing on the sidelines going through warmups, Davis would have a decision to make about which of the two kickers he would have trying field goals. At least Sutton was back to her normal role as punter and place kick holder. And Stallworth didn't have to hear it for not spinning the laces."

World Bowl XLIV First Three Games
Maddening Inconsistency In First Third

The first two games of this campaign were excellent, to be honest. Two strong home games, big wins, setting up for success down the road. Then the Grid Corps went and sucked for no reason in the first away game of the season. It's something that I come to expect at this point, but it doesn't make it any less alarming. Without further ado, let me quickly review the first three games of this nine-game group stage.

Home Opener vs Kriegiersien

What more can you ask for in the first game of the World Bowl group stage? A home opener, a hyped-up crowd wanting to see what a relatively new-look team can do. Morale was high going into this game from a fan standpoint. Despite the fact that we lost the last Bowl, and dropped to #8 in the rankings, we still did better than the rest of the field. Drawkian fans will always turn out, as evidenced by the fact that the Base Corps has anybody attending games still.

This game would turn out to be a clinic, and one of the biggest blowouts of the first matchday. The lowly-ranked Kriegiersien squad, one of the worst ranked teams to play in this Bowl, were also trying out a new roster for the first time at the World Bowl level. Rather than using their typical national team of years past, they told their NSCF contingent, Aturim Deephides Stonecutter School, to play under the Kriegiersien flag. An interesting choice, to be sure. The dwarven school floundered in the high-caliber Horizon Conference last season, so expecting them to compete at a high level in the World Bowl may be asking too much. Perhaps it was more of a logistical or money-based choice rather than a competitive one.

Either way, it was clear that the Grid Corps would be taking no prisoners in the home opener. Drawkland would score four touchdowns in the first half, allowing only one field goal. We went 2/4 on two-point conversions to make the score an impressive 28-3 at the half. With the game surely in hand, new head coach Glenn Romano took this opportunity to give more playing time to the second-string players. For a national team of Drawkland's caliber, it wouldn't mean a terrible drop in the quality of play. We'd score another three touchdowns, this time switching to normal PATs, and the dwarves of the Stonecutter School would tack on a couple touchdowns in garbage time.

Dustin Beck looked great in the first half when he played, racking up three touchdowns (two by air, one by ground) and zero turnovers. Jack Hoy was also excellent, getting 100 yards on the ground and one rushing TD. He was at 91 yards at halftime and sat out most of the second half, but Romano gave him a few carries late in the fourth to put him over the century mark. Jackie Morris and Quinn Conrad were the recipients of Beck's first half touchdowns.

The second half featured Caspian Casson's national team debut, and he performed decently. He had a passing touchdown to Jonathan Kimbrough from the eight yard line to start off the second half, and he operated as more of a game manager for the rest of the match. Zeke Kyro Cruz would come down with a pick six off of Thatean Graygrog, one of three turnovers by Kriegiersien on the day. The final Drawkian touchdown would be the first World Bowl score of Mike Banks' career, coming off hot from his great senior year at Cavsar and rookie season in the GLD.

The defense played great all game, highlighted by ZKC's pick six, but filled with plenty of other great moments. The Corps combined for four sacks on the various dwarven players to line up under center, and generally kept the Stonecutters at bay for most of the game, until the final quarter when they switched into prevent defense to avoid overexertion in a blowout.

Overall, you couldn't ask for anything better in the home opener. I went home satisfied, which is honestly a rarity when watching this team sometimes.

Home vs Gyatso-Kai

The second game of our opening home stand would come against the question mark: Gyatso-Kai. This nation has been in Atlantian Oceania for a long time, but they haven't really been relevant in the gridiron scene until last cycle, where they put together an impressive AO Bowl run given their assumed middling status. They're the only unranked team in our group, but given their recent regional performance and the fact that they beat StrayaRoos 40-27 in their own home opener, there was no reason to give them any less preparation.

The final result would feel similar to the opening game against Kriegiersien, but not as dominant of a win. One thing that stood out in the early game was the great defense by Gyatso-Kai. Nakamura Yoshi, the defensive coordinator, had clearly done his homework and put together a scheme that enabled the Boarqupines to keep the Grid Corps attack at bay, at least for a little bit.

The first half was almost a bit of culture shock for the Corps, as they had to go from the relatively porous defense of Aturim Deephides, to the aggressive and motivated defense of the Boarqupines. Their tendency to blitz and take away momentum from the big yardage plays shut down the usually guns-blazing passing attack of the Grid Corps, so a lot of the early play depended on Jack Hoy and the other runners to get yards on the ground. In their first two drives, the Corps would only come away with two field goals, thanks to the trusty leg of David Merit.

Gyatso-Kai would have a perfectly-planned opening drive to take advantage of the aggressive rushing Corps front line and get the ball out quickly with the spread option. Mit Wobet would hit A'den Kato on a pretty post route in the red zone to score the first touchdown of the game. By halftime, the Corps would add on a touchdown from the legs of Jack Hoy and a two-pointer on a wildcat play, but the score was a meager 14-7.

After making some halftime adjustments, Drawkland came out for the second half ready to add to their lead and put the game away. Besides the first offensive drive, the Corps D had done a great job of shutting down the spread and keeping the Boarqupines from moving the ball effectively. The second half only reinforced this, while the Corps offense opened up the field a bit more. Hoy's effective running forced the Boarqupine D to respect the run game, which gave Beck enough space to start hitting some targets downfield. On the first drive of the second half, Beck hit Abram Navis on a nifty sideline catch to get the Corps into the red zone, which was capped by Beck scoring himself on the read option.

The two-pointer would be no good, but the Corps still balled out for the rest of the half. Gyatso-Kai would only manage one more field goal in the third quarter, and that would be the last time their offense scored. Drawkland would add another Merit field goal, and Beck would get a passing touchdown to go to Kimbrough midway through the fourth, with a two-pointer to bring the score to its final resting place at 31-10.

Two home games, two solid wins ... and then we had our first road game.

Away at StrayaRoos

Let's just get this out of the way. This, the away tie against the best team in the group that isn't us, is technically the hardest game on our group stage schedule. Theoretically, this was our highest chance of losing. It would make sense for this game to be a loss, but not in such an ugly fashion.

The game was held at Estadio La Menai in Menai, StrayaRoos. The open-air stadium is home of one of the best gridiron franchises in recent StrayaRoos history, and perhaps they were hoping that success would hold over to their national team playing games in the same venue. Being winless so far, the StrayaRoos players were desperate to stay in the group race. Prior to the game beginning, a deluge of rain came and made the field incredibly sloppy. Not many Drawkian fans showed up, and the few StrayaRoos fans who braved the rain were as loud as they could be in the echoing venue.

The StrayaRoos national team has two names, the Koalas, and the Taipans. The former mostly refers to their soft or weak style of play, while the latter shows what they can be with more tenacious play on the field. Unfortunately for the Corps, we received the latter. The Grid Corps hasn't had to play in bad weather for a few cycles now, especially because Metro Arena, where our home games are played, is an indoor venue. Thus, this was a slopfest where the Corps played like dogshit.

The Taipans would take an early lead with a field goal on their first drive, but the Corps couldn't manage any points until a field goal as time expired in the second quarter to bring up halftime. Meanwhile, StrayaRoos had managed to score a touchdown in that time to bring the score to 10-3. The second half would be more of the same, with the Corps offense being completely out of sync and the sloppy turf being almost impossible to move the ball in. The defense put in work but couldn't stop a second StrayaRoos touchdown from doubling the lead.

Eventually we'd score another field goal, and Beck would finally find Jackie Morris on a passing play, but it was too little, too late. With the score 17-13, the Taipans were able to just run out the clock to prevent Drawkland from having a chance to take the lead before time expired.

What's Next?

So, suffering our first upset loss in the campaign is never fun, but I'd rather we take a couple losses here than in the playoffs, if possible. This loss can either be a small blip that we ignore and go on to win out, or it can be a season-defining turning point that leads to worse consistency. We'll be going into a tough road trip, starting with the loss to StrayaRoos, but we beat both Kriegiersien and Gyatso-Kai pretty convincingly at home. We can surely beat them on the road as well ... if everything goes to plan.

There's still more to go, but we'll see how everything turns out. Hopefully we'll be 5-1 by the time we have to hit the road to Ranoria. corpsguy725 out

Four games in, four wins: the Dragonflies keep showing themselves as a resilient team that needs to be in the knockouts. While there was little surprise as to that the Ko-orenites would win some, but there's more surprise in how well this era of players holds up to the immense standard of the past. Dropping to fifth in the world rankings, changes at quarterback, a lack of continuity at the offensive skill positions, and missing the biggest names on defence, the current crop of players catches a lot of flak. They have to get back into that top echelon of teams, or else.

Dominating defence is once again the name of the game, but without stringing together shutouts this time. Greater Cebu managed a touchdown (in a 31-7 win), New Gesem emerged as the runner-up candidate by scoring three in a 23-3 win (for us), Bendicion also managed a field goal (14-3), and Greater Cebu got the unconverted TD in the opening game as well (23-6). Four games, two touchdowns allowed, and all were wins by a score or more. We're cruising, but we're not putting together massive offensive drives. A team we'll always compare ourselves to, Ranoria of Group A, also has its ups and downs. Only HUElavia is scoring at will, it seems, but not without its problems (as the one-score win over the 4th placed team in that group will tell you).

Yes, we're controlling the ball, and we're looking good doing it, but we can't say we're a true contender yet. Masman has too many of his drives stall out in the games he's started at QB, though his accuracy and rapport with the receivers is fine. The playcalling is solid enough, the blocking is fine, but as always, it's the little things. A drop here or there, as you're trying to cross the halfway line. Even if you stall out there, the punting unit will pin the other team down near their goal line, and the defence will bail you out, but it could be so much simpler if you turn those drives into field goals and field goals into touchdowns. The offence has kept its turnovers down, which is 50% of what we ask of the offence, to be fair. In the games Arerira has started, you can tell that he's used to the conservative just-move-the-chains-a-bit play calling, but he's also having trouble. It's more crowded around the line of scrimmage with the addition of the tight ends, and both QBs are having trouble reading that. Add to that the lack of good one-on-one receivers, and you've got yourself a very containable offence.

The defence, meanwhile, is doing its thing. Jauffret has his men line up as a 3-4 defence more often than not, though that doesn't mean much if any of the four linebackers can take on just about any role outside of cornerback, pretty much. Binnenmars is playing far more snaps than Aurisea at free safety, which is not entirely as expected, but Jauffret needs an enforcer at that position to prevent anyone from making it past the second line of defence, rather than a hit-or-miss rookie. Turaundhinthen, his colleague at the safety position, is more or less the same, so most of the time, the Dragonflies are lining up 11 players, close to the line of scrimmage, with no way for the opposing QB to know where the pressure is coming from. Perhaps the biggest impact is coming from Hagendoorn, who was selected as a slightly different version of a weak side linebacker, but has played his part to perfection. Not the biggest name on the roster by far, but a very important building block for next World Bowl with Ezekiel, Fokke, and Henry all threatening to retire. The cornerbacks are near-flawless, as a duo, or if there are three of them in a nickel defence. Jennings makes everything look easy, Vigouroux has a great read on routes.

Week 4 EX Jaranethan 18 19:00 - Noordrug Astronauts 9-35 Mawryshire Centaurs (The Glacier, Launott att. 28000/28000, 9C Clear)

Week one, an out-of-division game with six teams getting their home opener. The rivalry duo of Aerellen and Noordrug play at home, both winning by a huge distance over another rivalry duo, from the huge cities of Greencaster and Willowbourne. The Mayara teams open versus teams that hope to turn the corner and string good results together, and at least one of them succeeds. The Wolves trip up, more than once, and only manage a field goal as the Admirals escape with a massive win. The southwest always has worse weather, and Eaglebury and Mawryshire are too typical even for this late-summer evening. Home teams are nearly perfect this week. The Centaurs show a bit more of their preparation and gameplan by upsetting Sterrenwolde 34-10.

Week two features only divisional games. Sterrenwolde runs into a second straight defeat, putting their plans on hold. The Caspians drop 53 on an unsuspecting Noordrug squad who looked so capable the week before. We do have our second one-score game of the year in a close Admirals-Aerellen bout. Week three features mostly bad weather, missed holds, messy kicking, and a lot of drops. We see the Wolves (a run-first team) and the 65ers (also good at running the ball) settle for a 6-3 final scoreline, Greencaster and Noordrug combine for under 20 points, Sterrenwolde lose again and are in damage control mode just three weeks into the season, but one team has figured it out (and it's not who we expected): the Mayara Destroyers climb out to a 3-0 start with a 52-7 win!

Week four sees our third (out of six) out-of-division games, where Sterrenwolde get their first win, a 23-12 affair over another struggling team. The Destroyers run into their first loss, and it's a bad one: 17-3, near shutout, to the 65ers. Aerellen and Eaglebury, pretty much the furthest-apart teams, put 74 points on the board in stable conditions in the northeast, and the weatern is cooperating everywhere outside of the south coast, where Greencaster lose to a team they view as their rivals (that's not viewed as such in return), Aminey.

Vandaele, Phoenixes cruise by Venmere
Jackals WR continues to rack up touchdowns under radar

No doubt the Venmere football team, playing in its first World Bowl, did its best to study up on international superstar quarterback Taurus Wright.

They forgot to do their homework on Justin Vandaele.

The 29-year-old wideout, playing in his second World Bowl, racked up 214 receiving yards on 11 receptions - both international career-highs - and two touchdowns as Delaclava showed some better form in a 30-13 victory in Orton City.

"I swear, it's like some people think Taurus Wright throws the ball to himself," said coach Frank Newman in the post-game press conference, shaking his head slightly. "But right now, we have the best receiving crew in the world, and Justin Vandaele is better at what he does than anybody else."

Vandaele, who has six years of professional experience following a successful career at St. James, is particularly noted for his raw downfield speed but has made improvements as a route-runner in the past few years and is widely regarded as the best of his kind in the DGL. He certainly gave Sampson Peterson fits all game, burning him for a 55-yard touchdown on the first drive of the game and setting tone for a game that the Phoenixes led 17-3 at the half.

"He's one of the guys that makes my job easy," said Wright, who finished the game 24 of 33 with 354 yards and the two touchdowns to Vandaele as well as 14 rushes for 72 yards. "A game like today just goes to show there's nowhere to hide against us. We play complete game for 60 minutes and that's what it takes to hang with us."

Noah Simmons added a 7-yard rushing touchdown in the second half and Kieran Conley rebounded from a poor game against Kyhun by making all three extra points and converting field goals of 27, 37, and 34 yards. For Venmere, Mike McKissic caught a 13-yard score from Devon Halsell and David Price made field goals of 45 and 29 yards.

The week's results leave Delaclava as the only undefeated team of the groups who will play their final three games in South Newlandia. The Phoenixes will attempt to preserve that distinction when they take on Sarzonia at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock. The Phoenixes won the first meetup 24-7.

World Bowl XLIV
Kriegiersien Football team beats Drawkland in Chaosgame 13-12.

Kriegiersien 13–12 Drawkland

It is now still anyones game in Group C.

The victory was a big upset as Kriegiersien has the most unconventional team in the group and was destroyed by the favourite in match one.

Dudagog was the player of the match, making the decisive touch down looking unstoppable if less then 5 players were attached to him.

Even his teammates who have shown much disgust to the orc showed him some sort of regard after the match.

“He is a survivor, I respect that”, said Kicker Tungdil, one of the more liberal dwarves of the team.

And he really is. Dudagog is the only player of the former World Bowl team who is still traceable.
He even won the trophy in Kriegiersien Football, a sport that is still known for its heavy death toll.

Played with heavy tanks and Artillery in its final state before the reboot, the rules were restricted after one quarter-final 22 years ago ended with a nuclear bomb as ball that not only obliterated both teams but also the city where it was played.
Since then it was hard to find host cities for the matches, before all weapons were restricted to limited vehicles and firepower per side.

Even some people call this new version too tame, the sport is still loved in Kriegiersien and every year a team raises the Trophy as ‘Galaxy Champion’ after winning the Kriegiersien Championship in Kriegiersien Football, which is only played in Kriegiersien and Zombiestan.

Dudagog triumphed here with his team “Killaz” with one touch down and ripping of and stomping the heads of three players.

With three light injuries for opponent players in his first game against Drawkland he was here much more cautious trying to arrange with the rules.

How the team will move on in the next two matches will be much in his big hands.

With news that both* of the candidates in the forthcoming Kavanese Presidential election will be attending the Kumquats’ final home game in Week 6 against Banija, we take a look at where the candidates stand on the issues and how that relates to handegg.

Image

* Of course, there are many third party candidates, representing extreme, bizarre fringe positions like having a national health service or banning handguns, but in the duopolistic Kavanese system none can afford tickets to the game.

Part 3
High Schools in Chromatik High School Gridiron - Origins Behind the Unique Mascots, Part 4

Urrhed Island
Emerald Conference
Staramara Tech High School Battle Angels - Staramara Tech High School is a technical high school, but it's also got a hidden gem - an extensive anime program. Battle Angel's Fury is a prominent anime produced from the graduates of Staramara Tech High School - so prominent that it was chosen as the school's mascot. The suit that the mascots get to wear looks amazing on the field as well - the high school's mascot costume has actually won costume contests in conventions.
Block High School of Tor Wights - A wight, of course, is an undead monstrosity with magical abilities. Block High School is a high school that takes up an entire block; they teach all the major subjects, but also things like video game design, tabletop role playing design, fantasy lore, and the like. When asked what fantasy creature was the most fearsome, the Wight won by a landslide due to its undead magical horribleness.
Qet School of Ornithology Albatrosses - An albatross is a very large oceanic bird, and there are lots of them on Urrhed Island, especially near the city of Qet. As a school devoted to studying birds, Qet School of Ornithology had to pick one; they didn't want to pick a fearsome bird nor a comedic one, so they found one that was natural to the area and brainstormed a way to make it into a mascot. Their representative on the field is a rescued albatross that can't survive in the wild by itself - lovingly dubbed "Henrique" by his handlers. Henrique the Albatross is only fifteen, and with most albatrosses living beyond fifty years, will have the opportunity to be one of the most beloved living mascots in Chromatik sports.
Tor High School Shooting Stars When you get to Tor, you can see the stars out at night - including the shooting stars that do show up at various times of the year in the Chromatik night sky. The Shooting Stars are a way to pay homage to both the fact that stars both rise and fall in life, as well as the fact that there are meteor showers from time to time. It's a pretty sight to behold, indeed.

Silver Conference
Central Tihon High School Knives - Knives are very useful tools - used in cooking, crafting, or in defense. Central Tihon High School had some interesting choices when it came to picking their mascot, but chose the name of Knives because the mascot itself is cool - a serrated knife costume can be very intimidating - but also because the school tries to have graduates that end up being very useful members of society. It's an interesting choice, but an understandable one.
Northern Urrheddiao High School Royal Purple
Southern Urrheddiao High School Gold - Royal Purple and Gold. Remind you of anything? Yes, those are the primary colors of Urrheddiao of the Red League. It makes sense that the high schools would pick the colors of their major club, but how did North get royal purple and South get gold? Urban legend says that the two schools' presidents played rock-paper-scissors for it, but the actual truth is that Urrheddiao the club picked which one would get the name Royal Purple and the other Gold. The Gold won in terms of the actual mascot, as they have utilized a golden retriever named Goldie while the Royal Purple have a man dressed in a purple suite of armor. As a pairing, the names make sense, but it's also an example of how sometimes, it's not that complicated.
Tihon Elite Academy Fog Wall - How did a school get the moniker, "Fog Wall"? A wall of fog can be so impenetrable that it makes things impossible to see; the promise is to have such a defense and a presence that will make it impossible for the other team to score. Tihon Elite Academy has one of the nation's only high school-level meteorology programs, specializing in weather forecasting. Instead of going for typhoons, cyclones, or the like, they stuck with the suffocating, moist nature of the fog wall.

When you have one of the top quarterbacks in the competition, there will be games in the Group Stage that are absolutely carried by them. This was one of those games. Contributing 183 yards on the ground with two scores and adding another score through the air (going 15 of 19 for 194 yards), Sarai Gwenderyn accounted for 377 yards of the Iron Legion's 425 as Chromatika took control of the game early and didn't let United Adaikes come into the game at all. With Mon Sold clipping Kohnhead, it means that Chromatika is tied with Kohnhead atop the group - behind by virtue of head to head record, with the second of their three matchups on the horizon.

Chromatika will be hoping to return the favor that Kohnhead paid to them on the first match of the Group Stage. That defeat showed Chromatika it still had work to do; this will be an opportunity to grab hold of the group, almost halfway through.
Lightning Doesn't Strike Twice
Part 4: The Quorum

Three months before the World Bowl
Chromatik City Field, Chromia, Capital District, Chromatka

Chromia City Field in Chromia was the home of the Chromia Central College University Comets football team and the Crossroads football club of the Red League, but it was also the home field of the CCCU Comets in the CCGC, the Chromatik Collegiate Gridiron Conference. As such, it proved to be a decent place that the Chromatika Iron Legion could use when it came to practice, or even tryouts.

Today would be the day that the Iron Legion would pick their Kickers for the next World Bowl. The team had announced that it would allow two kickers to be on the roster, and also that there would be tryouts, meaning that James Dior and Michelle Breille wouldn't automatically be voted in.

The first to enter the stadium was James Dior, the starting kicker for the Staramara Tech University Lava. As a team that lived off of field position and punishing runs, Dior had a lot to do with the Lava's scoring, consistent within forty-five with a decent leg and being almost automatic when it came to extra points - though almost everyone on the list of people being considered could say that they were automatic when it came to extra points. Dior's right leg was very reliable, and he'd had the experience of being the starting kicker in the Iron Legion's semifinal run last time around as well.

Next, his domestic collegiate rival, Michelle Breille. There had been a time when she was Sara McAllister's understudy, working on her accuracy while already having a rocket leg. Now, she was the kicker for the NSCF Champions, with consistency on high-pressure situations, the ability to nail kicks from beyond fifty, and a great love for the sport.

Then, the Ranorian contingent arrived. Shirley Woo and Jang Bo-Ah had both made a name for themselves, proving to the RFL that the future of kicking was Chromatik; they were considered longshots because they weren't as well known as the Chromatik duo, but to kick for Richardson or Cold Hill was no joke, and the fact that they were proving to Ranorians the value of the kicking game made them the perfect ambassadors of the sport to one of the biggest markets for the sport.

Stepping in five minutes before the tryouts began was one Dwayne Markseon, the architect of the long kicking game for Northern Moravica University, proven commodity with strength while also being decent at all ranges, having kicked game winners for the Cougars.

The last of the kickers to show up was Lauren Schiavonne, the special teams player of the year in the CFL. Going 33 of 33 with 10 for 10 beyond 50, Schiavonne was the best chance for a non-collegiate kicker to make it to the squad.

When the appointed hour came - 4:30 on the dot - the gathered six looked around to see who would be the one actually testing them. There was no Vera James. There was no Niles Crescent.

Instead, stepping out of the tunnel, dressed in workout clothes, holding a ball, was these kickers' role model and hero.

Sara McAllister Drumov. In the flesh.

NSFB: Certainly A Close One...Too Close

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri May 13, 2022 5:29 pm

After we fell in HUElavia by 19 points, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia were entering the 2nd part of the World Bowl group stage at 2-1 and looking to bounce back. That defeat in HUElavia was certainly rough but now, the focus was on trying to prove that TJUN-ia can fight with them when they come over to our turf. Gus McKerrin wanted more drive and more passion from his team in order to make some more...statements, starting with Rocky Canada back in the Field of Dreams in The Gardens of New Washington.

This game ended up being one of the most stressful controlled wins in our history as the Jaguars were the better team, but Rocky Canada found ways to make the scoreline a little bit iffy at times. They managed 31 points tonight, with Sydney Garrett once again staring for Eugene Farrell's...Wolves? Maybe. Garrett found both Barry Greene and Theo LaVoie twice for scores while the kicker managed a perfect night - 5/5 overall, all 4 PATs and a FG as well. As for us, we managed a controlled 36 where we essentially took control of the game early and let Rocky Canada back in a bit too much. Jake Griffin found the endzone 4 times as well via four of his fellow starters - Hubert Valois, Jack Davidson, Chris Davidson and Vinny Mac - while kicker Chi On-Ma ended up with a mixed card - 6/7 overall, 3/4 PATs and 3 FGs too. In the end, the performance was good...but only winning by 5 does not do well in the optics.

Our final road game of this group stage is coming up already, with Theofficaljapan on the horizon. Let's just hope for a good time in Nippon, shall we? GO JAGS!

For some of the top squads in World Bowl XLIV, Matchday 3 proved to be the day of upsets. World #17 HUElavia destroyed fellow uppercase-loving country, #3 TJUN-ia, by a score of 29-10. The #24 StrayaRoos Taipans survived the #8 Drawkland Grid Corps, 17-13. The unranked Mon Sold Strikers snuck past the #13 Kohnhead Brains, 34-32. But perhaps worst of all, the #12 South Newlandia Elephants stomped the #6 St. Kanye Surge, 35-9, with the help of not only their tenacious defense, but also an unusual heat wave that swept the Elephant Valley region.

Said heat wave put starting Surge quarterback R.J. Linetti out of commission for half the second quarter and the entirety of the second half, as he got carted off the field due to a heat stroke. Recent Memorial Bowl champ Tim Hunt stepped in under center, but his World Bowl debut was a rough one as he completed only 17 of 29 passes for 168 yards, zero TDs and two interceptions (one for six points). That's an abysmal passer rating of 46.34. "I was thrown into the fire - quite literally, I'd say," Hunt told reporters after the game, which saw the Yeezies drop to 2-1 but still lead Group H on point differential. "Not how I wanted my first outing to go, but what's done is done, and I hope we bounce back in the weeks to come. At least we have two more chances to get back at SNL, and at least this didn't happen in the playoffs."

The Elephants racked up fourteen quick points from two touchdowns on the air. The first was a pass from Robert Stein to tight end Dhruv Valentine for 14 yards (quite fitting giving the latter's surname, don't you think) on the team's first drive. The visitors tried to equalize, but Kyle Dorn forced a fumble on Linetti, which was scooped up by Pascal Melendez, and a few plays later, Stein would connect with wideout Olaf Ramsey for 37 yards.

1Q STK field goal Rasputin 53 SNL 14-3
With the offense proving sluggish and the defense not making stops, it was St. Kanye's elite (to some) special teams unit that provided the lone bright spot for the team that day. James Rasputin booted one from beyond midfield to put the Surge on the scoreboard late in the first period of action.

2Q SNL Downs 5 run (Corbett kick) SNL 21-3
Chris Florence's punt pinned the Elephants at their own eight-yard line, but it didn't matter, as they capped off a long drive with a short run to the end zone by fullback Mark Downs. On the Surge's succeeding drive, Linetti would complete a seven-yard pass to Bruce Dobler, then a four-yard pass to Hussein Jeffers, and then collapse from the heat, prompting head coach Jeff Delphine to call a timeout and replace him with Hunt.

3Q SNL Reed 17 run (Corbett kick) SNL 28-3
The home team widened the lead even more with a Giovanni Reed TD early in the third quarter. "28-3? Teams have come back from such a deficit, so why not us?" Coach Delphine told his players during a timeout, with most of them already hanging their heads. Unfortunately, they would not get the chance to do so.

3Q SNL Pruitt 49 interception return (Corbett kick) SNL 35-3
Inspired by his coach's words, Hunt came out hot on their next drive, as he completed three successive passes for first downs. However, the fourth sailed over Dobler's head and into the hands of Elephant cornerback Valentijn Pruitt, who took the pigskin the other way for the pick six. Hunt apologized over and over to his teammates, only for Justin Varley to come up to him and pat his back. "It's fine. Everyone makes mistakes," the linebacker said. "If we don't, how will we learn anything, right?"

4Q STK field goal Rasputin 38 SNL 35-6
4Q STK field goal Rasputin 31 SNL 35-9
It seems Rasputin was on a different island from the rest of his teammates, as he still kept sinking his field goal tries. "I know it's far from enough, but it's my own little way of helping this team, given how big a factor point differential is in this competition," he said.

The Surge and Elephants caught each other at 2-1; the Quebec and Shingoryeo Grim Reapers also matched their record, winning 27-14 over the State of Imperial Russia (0-3). That concluded the first leg of the triple round robin format of the group stages; there will be a week's break before Matchday 4 kicks off with the tournament opener venues flipped. That means St. Kanye will be visiting the SIR, with Linetti, one of the team's ace players, expected to be back in action, while the Quebecois will be in South Newlandia.

Aside from the upsets mentioned earlier, here are some of the results from the other groups.

- In Group A, the defending champion and co-host Ranoria Krauts (3-0) outlasted the debuting South Americanastan Bears (2-1) in a battle of previously unbeaten sides, 16-14.
- In Group B, Bendicion (1-2) won their first game of the tournament, defeating Greater Cebu (0-3) by a score of 32-24.
- In Group E, the Banija Serpent Eagles dismantled Kavanis 54-26; both now sport 2-1 records.
- In Group F, the Sarzonia Stars followed up an opening day loss with back to back wins, their latest being a 26-nil beatdown of newcomers Kyhun (0-3).

Expansion in Route- 8 GFLB Expansion cities chosen as the league goes international

Image

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- The Gridiron Football League of Banija has decided to officially move forward with plans to expand the league by 8, to 24 total teams. Well, it had already been decided a while ago to do that. But the 8 expansion cities have been chosen by the GFLB. "We have chosen 8 cities that, we feel, will embody everything that we're trying to do in the GFLB." Said the GFLB Commissioner. "We have long believed that expansion is the best way for us to accomplish our various goals as a league, and for us to have the biggest impact we could possibly have as a sport.

No need to wait at this point, right? What are the 8 cities that the GFLB has chosen to expand into?

International Expansion Cities
St. Jakob Honey Badgers. St. Jakob, Teusland, Metro population of 4 million
Mar Sara Night Elves. Mar Sara, Valanora- Metro population of 1.25 million
Port Stovine Sea Turtles. Port Stovine, Northwest Kalactin- Metro population of 5.5 million

And officially, the GFLB has chosen to expand into three international markets. Like we said before, St. Jakob was an obvious choice. THere's the geographic proximity, the league's been playing games there for a few years, etc... And the city size, which is a city well populated with a Banijan migrant population. Of course, locally source ownership had to be found, and it was. The GFLB Commissioner is excited at the prospect. "St. Jakob has been a partner city for this league for a few years now, and we firmly believe that it is capable of having a successful gridirion team here, with an engaged fanbase. We've built the groundswell of support here, and fans are going to be packing the house here in Teusland."

The second international city was one we mentioned- Mar Sara. It was questionable whether the newly formed Night Elves would ever get launched. Mar Sara has proven that they support the sport at a collegiate level, with Mar Sara Tech, but that doesn't mean they'd support it at the pro level, right? But without professional gridiron, the GFLB said it was too lucrative a market not to take the risk. "Many may say that there is no way professional gridiron can be successful in the Eternal Empire. They say there are too many challenges, both economic and culturally, for this to work. I disagree. We've done our extensive research, and we've seen support for the sport. Obviously it is going to be fiercely competitive, but we firmly believe that we can keep a relevant team there for the course of the season.

And lastly, we have the Port Stovine Sea Turtles. This wasn't even on our radar when we had our potential list. The capitol of Northwest Kalactin. Recently re-committed to AO, a city with a gridiron scene and a Banijan migrant population. Why didn't we talk about it before? Well, we thought that the domestic scene was too strong. But clearly, we didn't do our own research. Despite the popularity of the sport in the country, they lack their own professional gridiron league. "It was a surprise when we discovered that, we won't lie." The GFLB Commissioner said. "But quickly, that vaulted them up our list." They pursued the GFLB hard after that, and there were plenty of back door conversations.

And here we are. THe GFLB considered more international expansion options, particularly from Busoga and Efnakia, as well as other places, but ultimately decided to limit international expansion to 3. "We have to stick to our Banijan core, of course." The Commissioner said.

Domestic Expansion Cities
Bwubanza Ostriches: Bwubanza, Bunyoro. Population of 1,272,830
Isipongo Wild Boars: Isipongo, Buganda. Population of 798,000
Igulu Bush Elephants: Igulu, Hangaza. Population of 732,302
Mukeruzi Hyenas: Mukeruzi, Ankole. Population of 657,220
Kosactus Red Vultures: Kosactus, Moravica. Population of 654,020

And then, the domestic options! 5 cities picked. Unsurprisingly, they picked the bigger cities on our list- no city with a population less than 650,000 was chosen. But the Commissioner is excited about the possibilities in all of these cities. "All of these cities offer a new, unique vantage point for the league to operate." He told reporters in a press conference. "We're going to have some good and fun teams all over the country as a result of this, and I believe that these teams will be competitive sooner rather than later."

And there you go. The league is expanded. How will alignment work? How will scheduling work? Come back at our next update to discover all of those juicy details.

Phoenixes remaining calm despite Stars loss
Delaclava still at top of table after perfect run ends

Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.

An early rushing touchdown by Ty'Relle Clinton was sufficient for a game's worth of scoring as Sarzonia throttled the Taurus Wright-led Delaclava offense in a 13-3 victory at Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock.

The loss snapped an 18-game winning streak for Delaclava in World Bowl preliminary matches, the longest active streak in the competition. After a 30-27 home loss to the Stars in the third game of World Bowl 42, the Phoenixes won the final five group games of that campaign before winning all ten in World Bowl 43 and the first three of this competition. The streak included two wins each over Sarzonia, Drawkland, Buffalostan, and Kohnhead as well as a win over Banija.

"This is what's normal," coach Frank Newman reminded the assembled media after a press conference. "You're supposed to go through the gauntlet in the regular season and lose a game or two. What we were able to accomplish for so long was incredible, but we got the worst of it today. It happens."

Wright, who finished 18-of-32 for 243 yards and two interceptions, lamented the missed opportunities in the game.

"We just couldn't get a lot going in any aspect of the offense. They got to me and to Noah a lot more easily today. I just didn't have the timing to unload out of the pocket and that's on me. And the few chances in the red zone we had, we just didn't convert, and that can't happen.

"13 points allowed on hostile ground is really a great defensive performance. If we can't beat that on the other side of the ball, we deserve the loss."

Perhaps the most painful missed chance came towards the end of the first half. On the previous possession, Kieran Conley had made the score 7-3 with a 39-yard field goal, and the defense forced a quick three-and-out off a sack by Thomas Schuttler. The Phoenixes threatened to hit paydirt and take a 10-7 lead in the locker room, but Will Donnelly timed it perfectly and jumped the pass from Wright to Justin Vandaele to come down with the interception.

"That was a tough turn of events," Vandaele admitted, "that we just weren't able to come back from."

But Wright insisted that the Phoenixes are as sure of their title hopes as ever.

"This changes nothing... we learn from our mistakes and clean up like we do after any other game, win or loss. And this wasn't even our worst game of our tournament - it just came against a better team and we just didn't have enough for them... We're pissed, but we're not worried yet. I know we want this one back when we get to neutral ground, but the approach is the same - Kyhun is next and we're going to go win that game before we do anything else."

And Newman saw the matchup in a loud, packed stadium as a good learning experience. "Our north star is Ranoria, and we're probably going to have to go through them to win the whole thing. If we want any shot of taking it to them in Ranoria City, in front of a crowd that's going to be even more against us, then we need to get those games like today where we play good teams in tough situations.

"I know we didn't win today, but I think we got closer to winning the big one, and that's why we do this."

THE HALIFAX TIMES
AFTER TWO HEARTBREAKING LOSSES, BEARS KNOCKED DOWN TO 2-2

ANTHOR - The South Americanastan Bears took a close loss to Anthor yesterday, putting their record down to 2-2 after a promising start to the season. The 33-29 loss puts South Americanastan in a tie for 2nd place with Anthor behind Ranoria, whom South Americanastan played last matchday, taking the Krauts the distance in a 16-14 loss due to a missed Allan Shepherd field goal. South Americanastan will face off against Lisander next week, hoping to get back on track and pull bring themselves back above .500. Bears quarterback Jimmy Echavaria, when asked about both losses, had this to say:

"To be honest, I'm proud of how the team has played these past two games. After a start like we had, it's sometimes easy to forget that this is our first year in the World Bowl and we're in a group with 3 top-class teams. We took Ranoria and Anthor down to the wire these past two games, and that's really all you can hope for in a group like this."

Echavaria, who passed for 279 yards and a 2 touchdowns in the loss, has emerged as one of the leaders of the team over the preliminaries, and has shown substantial development over the season. Unfortunately, he has lacked support from the run game (In the game against Ranoria) and/or the defense (In the game against Anthor). The struggles of the team were put on full blast last game, and Jack Wall did not have much to say when asked about it, other than:

"That's just how things shake out sometimes. We're confident in both sides of the ball and think we can rebound against Lisander."

Whether the Bears can rebound against Lisander is yet to be seen, and until then, questions will continue to swirl about the team's consistency.

Times A-Changin’, pt 4
Athletic recruiting in New Gesem resembles athletic recruiting in many places across the multiverse; children participate in school-sponsored athletics, where they are scouted by college athletic programs, which typically offer scholarships to the best players. The GCAA limits the number of scholarships which may be offered for any given sport. This number varies for different sports, but for football, schools are typically limited to fifty-three scholarship players at any one time.

The GFL’s annual draft, held every April, is the primary means of entry into the ranks of professional football in New Gesem. Players must be a minimum five years removed from high school graduation or possess a bachelor’s degree in order to declare for the draft. Graduating seniors who are not drafted may be signed by GFL teams as undrafted free agents, a practice that is much more common following the recent revisions to the GFL’s roster rules. The vast majority of players drafted come from the eighteen GCAA D-I college programs; rarely, a player from a D-II program will be drafted.

In addition to GCAA football, New Gesem has a robust junior college system which provides numerous players to D-I football programs, many of whom go on to be taken in the GFL draft. Juco football is also a draw for fans in its own right, owing to its low ticket prices and the allowance of alcoholic beverages at games. Juco sports in general are closely associated with the Gesemite fraternities; where the board of a four-year institution cannot have a majority of members from a single fraternity, two-year institutions are under no such restrictions and as such are frequently owned or sponsored outright by individual fraternities.

The recent entry of the New Gesem Pilgrims football program into the scene, as well as the entries of the University of Alexandroupolis Redbirds and University of Constantinople Binturongs into Nationstates College Football, has disrupted the norms in athletic recruiting in a few key ways. Prior to 2014, athletes who transferred schools were ineligible to play for their new school and could only switch their eligibility by declaring a major that was not offered at the previous school. With the athletes suddenly becoming aware of the NSCF transfer portal, the GCAA voted in to eliminate the restrictions effective immediately in an effort to curb the tide of Gesemite athletes transferring abroad.

With the de facto creation of a GCAA transfer portal, as well as the entry of Gesemite athletes to the NSCF transfer portal and the force majeur revision of GFL roster rules going into the 2014 fall season, the role of the Pilgrims program is expected to shift substantially. Instead of taking on “spare parts”, those who fell through the cracks of collegiate and professional football, the Pilgrims are expected to target three groups primarily; undrafted free agents looking to improve their stock, junior college alumni looking to be recruited by D-I football programs, and high school seniors looking to play a “greenshirt” season. By signing primarily from these groups, the Pilgrims hope to become the premiere destination for GCAA and GFL scouts, as well as scouts from foreign colleges and leagues.

Postby Sarzonia » Sat May 14, 2022 1:07 pm

The pageantry of the match between Sarzonia's national gridball team and Delclava's was far greater than what anyone would expect for what merely was the fourth of nine group stage matches during the 44th World Bowl.

Sarzonia was holding this match at Dave Wilson Stadium, easily the most important sporting venue in the country, instead of its normal home venue of Joe Gibbs Stadium. That venue will host the home finale for the Stars against Venmere, but this one was going to contain some of the biggest group stage drama in this competition.

Sarzonia would come away the winners, holding the second ranked team in the multiverse to a mere three points courtesy of the right leg of kicker Kieran Conley. It was a performance for the ages for the Stars defence, which harassed quarterback Taurus Wright into an 18-for-32 passing performance for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive coordinator Tyler Paige transformed his defence from one that blitzed often and tried to make a living off knocking quarterbacks on their duffs all match into one that picked its spots to apply pressure. They did just that, but Wright was unable to find the openings and passing lanes he did in Delaclava's opening 24-7 win over Sarzonia.

"We saw some opportunities to apply pressure on [Wright] and it worked," said linebacker Artem Roshovski, who got one of the sacks against Wright and forced him into the drive-killing interception by Will Connelly on a pass intended for Justin Vandaele. "Wright's one of those guys who can beat you if you miss an assignment, and we made it a point to focus on our jobs."

So, too did the offence. Following a three-and-out on the opening drive that saw quarterback Cameron Stallworth miss both pass attempts, Davis decided to rely on the running game and Ty'Relle Clinton on his team's next possession. He did just that. Clinton ran the ball eight times out of the 11 plays Sarzonia ran on their next offensive series. He garnered a nice 69 yards on the drive and capped it off with a four-yard touchdown run to give the home side a 7-0 lead. Matt Vargas made the extra point, but grimaced and held his left leg after hitting the conversion. He limped to the trainer's tent and Matt Andersen lined up for the ensuing kickoff. Manager Gavin Davis said Vargas would be available against Venmere, adding that he kept Vargas out after a slight hamstring tweak as a precaution.

"We had a good kicker to use in his place," Davis said. Andersen hit field goals of 28 and 44 yards to provide the final margin for the Stars, as they largely relied on Clinton the rest of the way. He finished the day with 27 carries for 154 yards. Stallworth finished the day 14-for-19 for 172 yards, but more importantly, he didn't throw an interception.

However, the biggest star of the day might be defensive coordinator Paige, as he watched his defence frustrate the Phoenixes, in particular in the red zone.

"You don't play a team like Delaclava as much as we have over the past few editions without knowing something about how to game plan against them," Paige said. "We saw a few things we wanted to exploit and I've gotta give our players credit, they followed that game plan to damn near perfection."

Delaclava (3-1) may still be top of the Group F table due to point differential in the head to head series, which favours the Phoenixes 27-20, but Davis said he felt the Stars were the ones with momentum going into the final stretch of the second of three legs.

"Oh, no question. Delaclava are one of the best teams in international gridball and we showed we could stand toe to toe with them," Davis said. "Would we have liked to have done better on our scoring chances? Sure. But we were able to move the ball against one of the best teams out there, and that's gotta count for something."

**********************************************************************************************************

James Arthur smiled when he saw the score flash on his mobile phone. Sarzonia 13-3 Delaclava. The Stars improved their record to 3-1, keeping pace with the Phoenixes. The offence was still not looking like it was hitting on all cylinders, but they looked about as strong as they have all season.

He turned to a memo sent by the Athletic Department. He was supposed to have lunch with the athletic director and his defensive coordinator Chris Hoskins, who had turned down another head coaching position. Arthur wanted Hoskins to become a head coach or manager somewhere, and he was beginning to wonder why Hoskins wasn't so keen to move on from Woodstock. Suddenly, his office phone rang.

"James Arthur."

"Mr. Arthur, this is Joyce Brundridge from the Incorporated Gridball Federation," came the voice on the other end of the line. Arthur rolled his eyes and lifted the receiver from his left ear a couple of centimetres as if he were going to slam it on the phone to end the conversation. For some reason, however, he slowly returned the receiver back to his ear.

"Yes?" he said impatiently, as if the call was keeping him from important business.

"We're sending over another contract offer," Brundridge said. "Same financial terms as the last one, except,"

"Except what," Arthur jumped in. The last contract had good financial terms, so if this was doing something like taking away holiday leave or some other benefit, he wasn't interested.

"Except you'll be able to keep your job at Woodstock University if you want."

NOW Arthur was interested. He leaned forward in his chair and his right eyebrow raised ever so slightly for a moment.

"I'll be able to keep my job?"

"Absolutely. The Board of Governors voted to allow you the same courtesy we allow the other coaches on staff.

Now Arthur was interested in taking the job. The only problem he saw now was that he wouldn't get a chance to install a new offence with the team roughly halfway through qualifying. He knew the players from the perspective of a gridball coach knowing players on various other teams, but not with the same familiarity he would have had if he'd already been on Davis's staff.

Finally, someone floated the idea of Arthur becoming an offensive consultant for the rest of this World Bowl with the proviso that he would then become the offensive coordinator starting with World Bowl XLV qualifying. There was even the thought of considering Arthur for the top job if the Board felt that was necessary. That is, if Davis himself didn't decide to stay or the Board didn't hire the suddenly hot commodity of defensive coordinator Paige.

All of that was for another day. For the present, Arthur was going to have to make the short drive to Joe Gibbs Stadium to meet the rest of the Stars.

High Schools in Chromatik High School Gridiron - Origins Behind the Unique Mascots, Part 5

Heartland District
Breadbasket Conference
Anfanhar High School Mystery - Who doesn't like a good mystery? But how did "Mystery" become the mascot for Anfanhar High School? Of the five most famous mystery authors in Chromatik history, three call Anfanhar High School their alma mater - Joyce Kimball of the Anastsia series set in the Chromatik Party era of Chromatik history, Marshall Burn of the Galaxy of Suspense series, a set of books about the doings in a custom universe, and Jaire Poole, the author of The Red Spot, a suspense horror mystery thriller about a pocket dimension set in the woods of Mt. Niar and Mt. Baker. Also, it's a lot of fun to have a man in a question mark mascot walking around, right?
East Shantarr High School Order - By Order, East Shatarr means the scales of justice, not an order of like minded individuals. Not many Chromatik high schools focus on having programs to help pre-law students, but East Shantarr is one of them, with a 91% success rate of landing a student in one of the law programs of Chromia Central College University, Pùr State University, and University of Myana. They have a bronze and gold-plated massive scale that they carry around to signify the mascot, lovingly called "Themis".

Dairy Conference
Crix Arts Institute Artisans - An artisan is a person who makes a living off of selling arts. Crix Arts Institute specializes in arts that are done by the hands, whether it has to do with sculptures, pottery, oil art, canvas art, or the like. As an arts institute, it doesn't have many other programs except the bare minimum to help someone graduate. A rather generic mascot when it comes to this list, but a fun one regardless, with the on-field representation being someone in an artist apron brandishing a brush. Interesting, no?
Cheonju High School Red Devils - Cheonju is a Korean-speaking city, and the Red Devil has a huge presence in Korean lore for the longest time. The Red Army are one of the most vocal fanbases in Chromatika, and the Red Devils are a proud bunch who love to speak out in support of their school and community.
Lorentine Central High School Majestics - What is considered majestic? In this sense, Lorentine Central means the majestic filagree of calligraphy. Why bother have a calligraphy program at all? Pretty scripts and ways of writing matter in some fields - and Lorentine High School monopolizes that. Besides, who doesn't want to see someone dressed like a fancy fountain pen?
Cheonju Korean Institute Condors - Another bird mascot, a condor is a majestic bird in flight, but effectively a vulture. Vultures are needed in ecosystems while also carrying an intimidating physique. Choenju Korean Institute actually has a Condor named Benjamin that they have as their mascot, from the local Choenju zoo. Benjamin is a majestic creature.

Revenge? Revenge. For a quarter, Kohnhead stayed around, capitalizing in a very good opening drive and a rare turnover from the Iron Legion.

However, the peace wouldn't last.

Chromatika scored fifty-three points - the most in the campaign so far, including two defensive scores - in the way to frustrating Byron Joseph, and the Iron Legion leveled the Kohnheadian Quarterback five times throughout the game to get atop Group G and split the series so far against Kohnhead. Sarai Gwenderyn was brilliant, going 21 of 24 for 291 yards and 2 scores, while Lana Rhodes and Rowena Hastroff combined for 131 yards and a score apiece.

However, it was the defense that truly shined, with Park Mi-Hyeon and Paul Mattieu each scoring one apiece while battering Joseph.

Now, Chromatika faces Mon Sold, a team that is on the rise after defeating both Kohnhead and United Adaikes. Mon Sold only lost by ten to the Chromatiks the first time arounnd.

Three months before the World Bowl
Chromatik City Field, Chromia, Capital District, Chromatka

Noticing that everyone was staring at her - and she couldn't blame them given all that'd happened - Sara decided the best way to go forward was to just begin.

"It is wonderful to be here again," she commented, "An a privilege to be in the position of picking the kicker for the Chromatik National Team. As you all know, kicking is a huge part of the game, and the Iron Legion absolutely relies on their kickers coming through on the PATs and any kicks from below forty yards. You need to be able to gauge the wind, provide substance from distance, and most of all, make sure that the kicker is ready for high-pressure situations."

"All of you were brought here because you've shown tremendous pressure in your past seasons. Chromatika has proven itself to be one of he better nations in the world when it comes to special teams, and it is very important that we live up to that reputation. I know that I disappointed everyone by stepping away, but now I have an opportunity to help you all, and that's why I am here. Questions?" With that, Sara prepared for a barrage, and was not disappointed.

Michelle Breille wordlessly came up and gave Sara a hug, quietly sobbing. The last time that Sara had seen Michelle, Michelle had been a scared underclassman that had been so apprehensible about taking over for Sara. Now, as Sara comforted her, Michelle brushed aside her tears.

"Welcome back, Mac," she whispered weakly.

Clearing his throat, Dwayne Markseon inquired, "Are you better now, Ma'am?"

"Oh, it's just Sara, Coach, or McAllister," she answered, "And yes. it's more under control now. Not well enough that I can join the squad altogether, but well enough that I'm on the team as the special kicking coach."

Jang Bo-Ah inquired, "How will these tryouts go?"

"We will have a competition. All of you will kick five extra points, then at ten designated spots under forty. Then, we will have a competition to see how everyone does beyond forty yards, up to fifty-seven. The goal is to cut the field down to two - a starter and a reserve."

"Are you sure you don't want to play?" offered Lauren Schiavonne.

"I can kick with you if you'd like," Sara offered, smirking, "Would you all like that?"

A chance to face off against one of the best kickers in Chromatik history? Who would say no to that?

With a chorus of nods, Sara started to jog down the field, putting up markers on where everyone would kick.

This was going to be fun.

World Bowl XLIV

StrayaRoos 13–31 Kriegiersien

After the victory against StrayaRoos the last match against Gyatso-kai will decide who of the two teams gets the play-off spot.

For many viewers it is a surprise that the dwarven team who lost most games at the NSCF was able to perform that way at the World Bowl.

Some say that it is the orc Dudagog who makes the difference. And his runs seem to indicate that. But how is it possible that a player who was good, but not the decisive factor for the previous National Team, is able to make a difference in a team that neither likes nor accepts him in his midst?

Analyst Doctor Fred Feaverdream had the answer:

“While other teams are using massive statistics to overanalyse the match, the raw approach of the dwarven team is strengthened by the unknown element in the group. By likewise hating him and admiring his skills they use him in the way needed. They protect him enough to be able to perform, but also give him the freedom to be an unexpected danger that can’t be monitored all the time.
It is a symbiosis with a parasite. A genius novelty of a tactic. Fascinating.”

Most people call it just luck.

NSFB: A Key Win Before Part II

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun May 15, 2022 6:15 am

After a tight and twisty game against Rocky Canada in New Washington, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia were 3-1 in a group that was certainly feeling tougher and tougher the more games are played...and that's certainly a bit concerning. Sure, we only have one loss but HUElavia are just dropping points on everyone in this and we need to catch up one way or another. Gus McKerrin knew that too and hoped to in Theofficaljapan things can improve to a point where winning this group may not be out of the question at all. Everyone knew they had to keep going...and so they did.

No one really knows much about our opposition, but this game was a bit of a defensive slugfest despite being 0-4 so...good on them! They managed a FG at home so I guess they can take that to heart when they look back at this contest. As for us, it was only the 2 TDs but that ended up being enough...Jake Griffin finding Jack Davidson twice and Chi On-Ma hitting both PATs for the 14-3 win. Not the best game from us, but in the end that wasn't the cause for our attention - Rocky Canada had beaten HUElavia 10-9 on the road. The gap was now only PD.

So, the final home game of this campaign will decide who will have the advantage entering the final third in Ranoria. The Field of Dreams is going to be packed for that one...but who will rise about the other before Winterfell? GO JAGS!

World Bowl 44: Quarterback Rankings Part 1: The Top Tier
by Vick Hamilton

Hello there and welcome to the first of 3 editions of our World Bowl 44 Quarterback Rankings! We should note that this is an entirely biased outlook and, regardless, if the defining list of who's the best among all quarterbacks. Now, we will only be including World Bowl starters, so fan favorites like Amazu Chibuzo, Diamond Rhine, or Simon Gacek aren't going to be included here. For the start, we're don't really have much separation between any of these three, so please be aware that we're splitting hairs at best.

1: John Garrett, Ranorian Krauts

It'd be a tough sell to put anyone else at the top after he's led this formerly hardwareless team to the pinnacle of gridiron in 2 of his 3 seasons at the helm. Farmboy has a surprising lack of titles at home, but he's a dominant player under center and it'll take more than one loss in the group stage to move him front his spot here, precarious though it may be. He’s not the biggest or the fastest among the plethora of talented signal-callers leading their teams in this competition, and he doesn’t even have the biggest arm. But for now, he’s the guy everyone else is chasing.

2: Taurus Wright, Delaclava Phoenixes

Like we said, we’re splitting hairs. Wright has eviscerated any defense unfortunate enough to get put in front of him in the last few cycles with his legs and a cannon for an arm. With him under center, the Phoenixes were the only team in Word Bowl 42’s knockouts to even come close to knocking off Ranoria - but painful as it is, they lost in the semifinals to that squad in each of the last two tournaments, and that’s really the only reason we feel he’s under Garrett here.

The feeling among pundits and fans alike is that this team is either poised to finally break through or that they’re destined to slip a bit. We here at RSNN know better than to bet against this guy. Whether it’s substance abuse or an 11 man lineup of world-class athletes, Wright can handle whatever obstacle is in his way. Deleclav fans have patiently waited for another championship, with their title drought extending back to securing gold in World Bowl 15. You don’t think this guy’s actually gonna let that stretch get to 30 editions, do you?

3: Dustin Beck, Drawkland Grid Corps

The premier dual threat in all football - we’d say anyway. Of course Wright up there has gashed defenses with his legs too, but we’d give the slight edge to Beck in the mobility department. Coming off a runners-up campaign, the veteran signal caller has consistently managed to overcome adversity - be it making the final after barely scraping their way into Word Bowl 43’s playoffs or just having to endure a coach like that hack Quentin Averfel who they finally dumped. Beck’s not long from getting into the twilight of his career, so the question remains - how much more will he add onto the legacy of Drawkland’s World Bowl resumé?

Hint for next week: expect to see multiple players who have played for Ranorian teams at some point. Any guesses?
