Oh. How is a culture victory? It’s was more about placing party zealots in SCOTUS then the people changing their views. It will be an interesting vote. It will be where we see the true nature of Alito, Gorsuch, Kav and even the CJ with all their comments about established law and stare decisis. At least Barrett dodged the questions rather then lie about them.

Still I get the feeling it’s going down and we will be pastured with MAGA messages and the SCOTUS is actually neutral and did us a favor.

They don't care about people changing their views. They just care about hurting the people they hate.

People don't need to change their views, it's still a win if Roe is overturned. Add to that the rumors that Thomas is going to write the majority opinion for an upcoming gun rights case and SCOTUS is poised to give the GOP a massive shot in the arm in the near future.

I'd argue that it remains to be seen whether there are many movable (and by "movable" I'm also including the concept of base mobilization) votes in an environment where the culture war is this pervasive. Like, yeah, I think anti-abortion voters will probably be excited by the overturning of Roe... but how many more of them are voting as a result of that that didn't already vote in every election? It's not clear that there's much room for movement on the margins, even accounting for the shot in the arm versus fury dynamic. If the margins move, obviously they do, but do we really have an analogous example of that in recent history?

I suppose there's a criticism to be made about the left being associated with the online culture war, and not doing enough to redirect the narrative back to issues they're popular on. That's about it. I don't consider the left directly responsible for whatever cultural grievances you're reffering to.

Oh I see. Cultural was not the right word. It is indeed a conservative win.

The GOP isn’t going to get much of an improvement. Hate is their motivation for the most part. Hate of liberals/left/socialism/intellectualism/whatever. Love of Trump.

The ROE overturn is poorly thought out and there is a shitstorm coming as many legal issues are in play. What does a group say in California do if a Texas woman shows up for an abortion. Do they have to worry about being sued? Is insurance going to pay?, etc., etc.

I am not surprised on the Gun case. There are 4 justices who are only concerned about politics then the law….well…largely….time will tell for the three Trump nominations.

I don’t know about the case you mentioned. Have a link?

Still….even then; I suspect Thomas, Alito, Kav, Gorsuch, and Barrett already decided before the arguments even began.

The US really needs to find a far better alternative to appointing federal justices.

Not sure if this has been posted here, I’ll link it anyways.

Major social media platforms have mostly refused to comply with countries demanding moderation changes. Seeing as this would be much more destructive (besides being flooded with spam, porn, and gore, how exactly are algorithms supposed to promote all users equally?) to the sites than previous times, it’s unlikely they’d go along with it. The most practical response, from a business standpoint, would probably be restricting services from being used in Texas, which hints what the GOP may actually want: a state where far-right platforms like Gab control the market.

Awful (and downright dumbfounding) legal precedents on free press, property rights, and Internet regulation non-withstanding, the Chinese Texan knockoff platforms will be interesting. Big Red Book, YeehawChat, Houstyin…HiliBili anyone? Ok, I’ll show myself the door.

When in doubt, evoke pedophilia. What fuckwits.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

If this happens then the republicans will just replace the court with their guys once it's their turn. No, they don't have the power to do it first (neither do you), and no, you won't be able to permanently prevent them from regaining control.
