96th Tofino Film Festival


ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Tofino Film Festival (French: Fèsta Tofino di Çìnema), often known as the Tofino International Film Festival and popularly known as the Pine Awards is an annual film festival held in Tofino, Zamastan. It features premieres of films from all genres, including documentaries, made across the Coalition of Crown Albatross. Films are subject for consideration for the festival's grand prize, the Pine Award. The Festival and its awards highlight artistic and technical merit in the Zamastanian and international film industry. Films must have been completed in the preceding 12 months and make their premiere at the festival to be eligible for screening. It takes place each year at the Warren Nevisa National Theater.

The 96th Tofino Film Festival, also known as the 96th Pine Awards and the 69th Tofino International Film Festival, will be held from July 6-13th, 2022. It will premiere films of all genres, with the winners in each category being voted on by representatives of participant film coalitions.

Award Categories

Participating nations may submit up to 21 entries, with a maximum of 2 entries per category (with the exemption of 3 for Best Picture).

Best Picture (Pine Award):
- Entry must consist of a plot synopsis, list of main characters & their actors, and (optional) important production or background information. May separately submit up to 3 movies.

Best Actor:
- Entry must be an actor who has appeared in a specifically-cited film submitted to the festival. Entry may consist of details about the actor, such as age, nation of origin, other filmography, and any other relevant information. May separately submit up to 2 actors.

Best Actress:

Voting
Every nation that submitted an entry to any category of the 96th Tofino Film Festival is allowed to submit one vote for each category. Self-voting is prohibited (we want to encourage and uplift others, no self-gloating!). Votes may not be changed once they have been cast. The entry which gains the greatest number of votes within each category will be announced as the winner of that category.

OOC: Entries may be submitted using puppets, but voting is restricted to one vote per player.

Venue
The prestigious Warren Nevisa National Theater in Tofino, Zian, is a live-performance auditorium in the Harland Avenue entertainment complex, located on Harland Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Tofino. The stage in the main building, utilized for award presenting at the conclusion of the festival, is one of the largest in Zamastan, measuring 113 ft (34 m) wide and 60 ft (18 m) deep, with its seating capacity accommodating 3,332 people. The convention center consists of 18 auditoriums for premiering films, and during the Festival there are additional screens set up in surrounding buildings for increased viewing allowance.

Further Information
The start date for posting entries is Tuesday, May 10th. The end date for posting entries is Tuesday, June 21st, although this may be adjusted at the discretion of the host. Voting will take place for 1 week following the close of entries, beginning on Wednesday, June 22nd, and ending on Wednesday, June 29th.

Synopsis of Movie:

During the winter in the Apelis National Park in Pahl, expert tracker and Wildlife Service agent Evan Brown discovers the frozen body of 18-year-old Amber Molson at a remote location. She is barefoot, without proper winter attire, and has a blood-stained forehead and groin. ZIS Special Agent Nataly Carey arrives to investigate a possible homicide, because the ZIS has jurisdiction over murder cases in National Parks, which are allotted Catica First Nations properties. The next day, Carey learns from Amber's father Seth that his daughter was dating a new boyfriend, but he does not know the man's name or where he lives. The autopsy shows blunt trauma and sexual violence and confirms Brown's deduction that the girl died from pulmonary hemorrhage caused by rapid inhalation of sub-zero air. The medical examiner is unable to classify the death as a homicide, so Carey cannot get additional help from her ZIS supervisors.

In sharing the traumatic revelations of the autopsy with Seth, Brown attempts to comfort him over the loss of his daughter, as his own daughter Kaitlyn had previously passed;

I'd like to tell you it gets easier. it doesn't. If there's any... comfort, it's... getting used to the pain, I suppose. Went to a grief seminar in Foreman City. Did you know that? I don't know why. Just wanted the bad to go away. Wanted answers... to questions that couldn't be answered. The counselor come up to me after the seminar and sat down next to me. And he said something that stuck with me. I don't know if it's what he said, or how he said it. He says, "I got some good news, and I got some bad news. Bad news is you're never gonna be the same. You're never gonna be whole, not ever again. You lost your daughter. Nothing's ever going to replace that. Now the good news is, as soon as you accept that, and you let yourself suffer... you allow yourself to visit her in your mind, and you'll remember all the love she gave, the joy she knew." Point is, Seth, you can't steer from the pain. If you do, you'll rob yourself... You'll rob yourself of every memory of her. Every last one. From her first step to her last smile. Kill 'em all. Just take the pain, Seth. You hear me? You take it. It's the only way you'll keep her with you.

Brown discovers that Amber's new boyfriend is Lukas Murray, who works security at a nearby oil drilling site. The next day, Brown and Carey discover Lukas's body, nude and ravaged by scavenging wildlife. Brown tells Carey about the death three years earlier of his 16-year-old daughter Kaitlyn, who was a friend of Amber's. Kaitlyn's body was discovered in the snow, following a party at the Brown house while his wife and he were away. No one was charged in her death.

Carey, accompanied by Tribal Police Chief Bentley Brockhouse, two sheriff's deputies, and two of Brockhouse's officers visit the drilling site where Lukas works, where they are met by several of the company's security guards and Declan, their supervisor. They claim Lukas stormed off a few days ago, following an argument with Amber, and has not been seen since. One guard mentions they heard about Amber's body being found and Carey states that Amber's name has not been released to the public. The guards claim they learned it by monitoring a police scanner. One of Carey's team notices the guards are slowly surrounding them and draws his weapon. The confrontation quickly escalates into an armed standoff which Carey defuses by asserting ZIS authority. She asks to see where Lukas was bunking, and they resume their approach to the trailer.

A flashback shows Amber in bed with Lukas, in what seems like a loving relationship. Unexpectedly, Lukas's colleagues barge into Lukas's trailer after a night of hard drinking. Lukas's roommate Nate taunts them and tries to sexually assault Amber, which provokes Lukas to violence. The other guards retaliate by beating Lukas while Nate assaults Amber. Lukas's attempt to fight back gives Amber an opportunity to escape, while the group beats Lukas to death.

In the present, Brown has traced the tracks from where Lukas's corpse was found back to the drilling camp. Carey and her team approach the trailer. Brown, looking down at the group from a distance, radios a warning to Brockhouse. From inside the trailer, Nate responds to a veiled warning from Declan by firing a shotgun through the door, wounding Carey. A gunfight ensues at point-blank range, and Brockhouse, his officers, and the deputies are killed. Just as the guards prepare to execute Carey, Brown kills four with his high caliber rifle. A wounded Nate flees on foot. Brown catches Nate, knocks him out with his rifle butt, then takes him to the foot of Ayden Peak. After forcing him to confess to what happened to Amber and Lukas, Brown offers Nate the same chance Amber had: rather than being shot, he can try to stay alive by running to a distant road while barefoot and wearing only lightweight clothing. Nate runs but quickly succumbs as his lungs give out from the frigid air.

When Brown visits Carey in the hospital, he praises her toughness. He later finds Seth sitting outside his house wearing his "death face" paint and holding a handgun. Brown tells Seth the case is closed and the man responsible for Amber's death went out "with a whimper." They share grief over their daughters' deaths. A title card follows this scene, stating that missing persons statistics are kept for every demographic group except Catica First Nations women, whose numbers remain unknown.

Production or background information (optional): According to director Elliot Rileson, he was inspired to write and direct the film because he learned about the "thousands of actual stories just like it": referring to the high number of native Catica women who are victims of assault and/or murder. He wrote and directed the movie to make more people aware of this problem, leading a campaign in Congressional Hall to pass the "First Nations Violence Protection Act". The movie grossed Z$45 million in the domestic box office against an Z$9.8 million budget.

Synopsis of Movie:

The Peon is a 2022 Zamastanian financial-thriller written and directed by Kenelm Bennett in his feature directorial debut. The principal story takes place over a 24-hour period at a large investment bank during the initial stages of the financial crisis of 1992. In focus are the actions taken by a group of employees during the subsequent financial collapse. The film features and ensemble cast including Adrien Dupuy, Helen Emmitt, and Faouzi Zerhouni. The film premiered on January 7th, 2022.

In 1992, an unnamed investment bank begins laying off a large number of employees. Among those affected is Beau Klein, head of risk management. Klein's attempts to speak about the implications of his current project are ignored, but he gives a flash drive containing his work to Lydia Morris, an associate in his department, cryptically telling her, "Be careful." Morris, intrigued, works after-hours to complete Klein's model.

Morris discovers that the assumptions underpinning the firm's present risk profile are wrong; historical volatility levels in mortgage-backed securities are being exceeded, which means that the firm's position in those assets is overleveraged and a decline in their value large enough to cause the firm's bankruptcy could occur in the near future. Morris urges her colleague, Carson Leonard, to return to work with head of credit trading Tyler Morgan; Morgan in turn summons Jude Davidson, his boss, after reviewing Morris's findings. Attempts by the four to contact Beau Klein end unsuccessfully, due to his company phone having been shut off.

A subsequent meeting of division head Andrew Spencer, chief risk management officer Bethany Travis, and other senior executives concludes that Lydia Morris's findings are accurate, and firm CEO Mekhi Pace is called. Upon Mekhi Pace's arrival, after Morris explains the problem, Davidson, Spencer, and Pace spar regarding a course of action. Spencer's strategy, favored by Pace, is a fire sale of the problematic assets, but Davidson points out that this will have significant negative effects on the broader market, in addition to destroying the firm's present trading partnerships. Pace counters that such effects are likely to occur in any case and stresses his desire to avoid bankruptcy regardless of the cost.

After the meeting with Pace, Morgan is informed by Klein's wife that Klein has returned home. Morgan travels to Klein's residence with Leonard and attempts to persuade Klein to return to the firm for the fire sale, but is unsuccessful. During the drive back, Leonard asks if he will lose his job; Morgan responds that he likely will, but, philosophizing on the nature of the financial markets, tells him not to lose faith that his work is necessary. Pace selects Travis to act as a public scapegoat for the firm's overleveraged position and will need to resign after the fire sale, even when Travis argues that she warned Pace and Spencer about the situation over a year ago. Meanwhile, Pace's subordinates are able to coax Klein into cooperating, and he commiserates during the trading day with Travis, his former superior.

Davidson, having been convinced by Pace that a fire sale is best for the firm, informs his traders of their task as they arrive for the day. He acknowledges the damage likely to be done to their reputations and careers, but reveals that as compensation, seven-figure bonuses will be disbursed if most of the traders' assigned assets are sold by day's end. As trading progresses, the firm elicits suspicion and eventually anger, and incurs steepening losses, but is ultimately able to close its position.

Subsequently, another large portion of Davidson's traders are laid off. Davidson, despite not himself being affected, is angry, and confronts Pace demanding to quit. Pace dismisses Davidson' view of the situation by recalling past economic crises, saying that such events are bound to happen and Davidson should not feel guilty for acting in his and the firm's interests. Pace asks Davidson to stay on for two more years; Davidson accepts, but protests that he still disagrees with Pace's outlook and only needs the money. Pace also tells Davidson that Morris is going to be promoted.

The film ends with Davidson burying his euthanized dog in his ex-wife's front yard during the night. His ex-wife, after emerging to speak with him, notes that their son's firm sustained heavy losses but resisted bankruptcy.

Synopsis of Movie: Thirst is a period romance film directed by Jwala Adhya and starring Bhima Jadhav, Salani Navathe, and Shakti Randhawa. The musical film is set in the Haduastan of the tumultuous 1950s when Barangadeshi nationalists fighting for the country's independence rose up, urging to separate from Haduastan and calling on foreigners to leave the country. It is a love story about two people who are torn between Karma (the noble deed) and Dharma (the duty).

In 2004, Lady Delaney, a wealthy Zamastanian woman, arrives in Haduastan to donate money to charity as part of Haduastan's Republic Day Celebrations. Before she can hand over the money, she requests a visit to Gutaraaj, where Haduastan's 2 great rivers Haputra and Alaknanda meet to form the mighty Jandus River. At Gutaraaj, Lady Delaney remembers her childhood and narrates her story to the small crowd, which includes a journalist.

Delaney was born in Haduastan in 1937, to Zamastanian citizens living in the country. She had a privileged and peaceful upbringing. In 1935, a young Delaney befriends Vivek, a local village boy, and the two share a joyous friendship. Upon learning of this, Delaney's father forcefully sends her back to Zamastan.

In 1956, shortly after the World War and during the Haduastan Split, Delaney comes back to Haduastan on holidays and again meets Vivek. Their childhood friendship is rekindled and over time the feelings slowly develop into love. Their relationship is tested by the fact that they seemingly belong to the opposite sides of Haduastan's struggle for freedom. Vivek also reveals that he is engaged to be married to Lakshmi.

There is growing resentment against colonialism and Delaney finds herself being targeted by an enraged mob of Haduastani nationalists. She is protected by Vivek, who faces backlash from his family and community, who were part of the mob. Vivek is torn between his friendship and love for Delaney, and his duty to his country and the hatred of the Foreign Influence. Vivek takes it upon himself to escort Delaney to the Foreign Office's High Commission, where safe passage back to Zamastan can be arranged for her. The trip reaffirms their love for each other but Vivek is ultimately forced to choose between his feelings for Delaney and his duty to his country. He chooses the latter and the pair bid an emotional farewell to each other.

In the present, it is revealed that Vivek married Lakshmi, and fulfilled his duties to his wife and country, but always loved Delaney till his death. His last wish was for his ashes to be spread at Gutaraaj, the place where first love blossomed between him and Delaney. Delaney's last wish is also for her ashes to be spread at Gutaraaj, so that, even though they both married different people, she and Vivek can be together forever.

Synopsis of Movie: First King is a historical drama film directed by Nicola Mallozzi. In Offeatia in 753 BC, a flash flood causes the two shepherd brothers Otello and Aimone to be stranded and captured as slaves in Alonga. They are able to rebel and free the other Vott and Sabine prisoners and take the priestess Satnei, who carries with her the sacred fire, as hostage. In a conflict concerning the injured Otello, Aimone ends up killing the Vott leader and becomes the new leader of the tribe.

The group face and defeat a warrior clan and Aimone is appointed king by the surviving old men and women of their pagus. During a sacrifice, Satnei predicts that one of the two brothers will become a great king and build an empire larger than what can be imagined, but to do so he will have to kill the other brother. The tribe assume that the prophecy means that Otello will end up dead for the sake of his brother's greatness.

Aimone refuses to accept a divine order that requires him to kill his brother. He extinguishes the sacred fire of Auro, kills an old priest and leaves Satnei helpless in the middle of a forest. Returning to the pagus, Aimone degrades all the inhabitants into slaves. Otello regains his health and confronts Aimone about his actions. Aimone, regretful, goes to find Satnei, who while dying from having been attacked by wild animals tells him that sparing Otello now means that it is Aimone who will end up dead at the hands of Otello.

Otello is able to rekindle the sacred fire and becomes the new leader of the pagus. He appoints a young woman to watch over the fire so it remains lit, thereby establishing the first Aurol. Aimone, trying to escape the prophecy, heads for the Dara River with a group of men, but is attacked by Alban cavalry and only saved by the tribe of Otello. Aimone then claims the tribe for himself, and threatening to extinguish the sacred flame is confronted by his brother. Aimone induces his brother to kill him so that the prophecy can be fulfilled. On his deathbed he makes peace with his brother, recognizes him as his king, and tells him to establish a city on the other side of the river.

The tribe cross the Dara River and burn Aimone's body on a pyre. Otello swears to build the world's largest and most powerful city on his brother's ashes. He gives the city the name of Vogoci.

During the end credits, an animated map shows the expansion of the territory subject to Vogoci up to its peak under the emperor Lino in 117.

Synopsis of Movie: The film documents the life and political career of Martin Beiter. The documentation shows important places in Beiter's life, archive photos and interviews with contemporaries. Rare old home videos of the Beiter family are also shown for the first time.


Martin Beiter is born on January 10, 1945 as the only child of the entrepreneur Leopold Beiter (1904-1989) and the housewife Greta Beiter (née Helbeing) (1907-1994) in the capital of Metakumburg Behringen. Between 1951 and 1955, Beiter attended the elementary school and from 1955 to 1961 the regular school in Behringen.

Beiter won a seat for the 14th Besmenian Federal Chamber on the Metakumburgian FBBP's state list in the 1972 Besmenian federal election. During his time as a member of parliament, he was particularly known as an excellent speaker and opponent of the blue-orange coalition led by Robert Gleitzmann. He found high recognition among senior FBBP politicians such as Jürgen Rothmann (FBBP chairman, 1968-1980) and Günther Traubert (Vice President of the Federal Chamber, 1976-1980). After the resignation of Roland Wasste, the chairman of the FBBP parliamentary group in the Federal Chamber, Beiter was appointed his successor in 1979.

After Jürgen Rothmann announced on July 10, 1979 that he would resign from the FBBP chairmanship in 1980 and not run as candidate for prime minister for the 1980 election, on July 15, 1979, during a press conference, Beiter announced that he would be for the office of FBBP chairman to apply. He competed against Theoberg Braun and Georg Wallmann. The election took place at the FBBP convention on March 22, 1980. With around 532 out of a total of 970 votes, Beiter achieved an absolute majority and was thus elected as the new party chairman and prime minister candidate of the FBBP.

The 1980 election campaign was dominated by the feud between Beiter and Gleitzmann. Beiter criticized Gleitzmann's resistance to Besmenian's accession to the Coalition of Crown Albatross, while Gleitzmann criticized Beiter for being too young. After the election, a minority government was formed with the Social Democratic Union. In the 1981, 1985, and 1989 elections, the FBBP-SDU coalition is reestablished. His 10-year premiership, was marked by a modernization of the Besmenian society. Under Martin Beiter, civil service was introduced in Besmenia, tuition fees were abolished, equality for illegitimate children and equality in marriage and divorce reform. Also under Beiter, Besmenia became a member of the Coalition of Crown Albatross in 1982, and was a co-founder of the Alliance of Nortuan States in 1989.

During an election campaign for the 1991 Maurenmark state election on May 5, 1991 in Melmingen, Beiter was assassinated] by the mentally ill Michael-Joe Lammer with two revolver shots. In the hospital in Melmingen, Beiter is declared dead. His death causes grief in Besmenia and internationally. After Beiter's death, the Martin Beiter Memorial Day was established in Besmenia, on which the Besmenians commemorate his death on May 5th.

Synopsis of Movie: Askel Brown, Caspiaa's most successful headhunter, supports his lavish lifestyle by stealing paintings from his clients; his partner, Ove, works at a surveillance company and deactivates security at the victims' homes, allowing Askel to swap the art for a counterfeit. Asked to dinner by his mistress, Lotte, Askel declines and ends their relationship. Askel's wife and art gallery owner, Synnøve, introduces him to Clas Greve , a former executive for GPS tech company HOTE, who wants to work for Pathfinder, for whom Askel is recruiting. Synnøve reveals that Clas has asked her to authenticate a lost Rubens painting he inherited that is believed to be worth millions.

Askel takes Clas to lunch to discuss the job, and soon learns Clas used to be a member of Pathfinder a special forces unit that specialized in tracking people and winner of the Euronian Military pentathlon. Despite his misgivings, Askel meets with Ove to work out details on stealing the painting. Askel manages to steal it from Clas' home, but he discovers Synnøve's cellphone beside Clas' bed. Later, after a seemingly successful meeting with Pathfinder, an upset Askel flippantly informs Clas that the company may be looking for someone else to fill the position.

The next morning, Askel finds Ove in his (Askel's) car, apparently dead from a poison syringe embedded in the car seat; when Askel dumps Ove in a lake, the water revives him, as he did not get a full dose of the poison. Driving Ove to his cabin, Askel puts him in bed and ignores his demands for medical attention, as he does not want the police involved. Ove pulls a gun in response, causing a shoot-out where Askel accidentally kills Ove. Finding Clas has followed him to Ove's cabin, Askel narrowly escapes after a scuffle. Trying to lose Clas' tracking devices, Askel switches his car for Ove's and throws his clothes in a lake, changing into Ove's spare uniform and fleeing to a farm where Ove used to stay. Clas tails Askel to the farm with his dog and murders the farmer, but Askel evades them. Trying to escape on a tractor, Askel is attacked by Clas' dog, which he kills by impaling it on the tractor's forks. Askel, believing Clas is chasing him, drives erratically and falls from the tractor, only to find his pursuer is a stranger wanting to help.

Waking in a hospital, Askel learns the police think he is Ove, and arrest him for the farmer's murder when he tries to escape. Driving to the station, the officers pull over to block a truck reported stolen. Remembering that Clas developed a nanotechnology gel that is very difficult to remove, Askel realizes that he is being tracked through GPS gel rubbed in his hair by Synnøve, and Clas is driving the truck; despite Askel's protests, the officers ignore him, allowing Clas to ram the car off a cliff. Playing dead until Clas leaves the scene, Askel shaves his head and hides his hair on a body, then swaps clothes with a detective's disfigured body to fake his death.

Askel turns to Lotte for help, only to discover she has always worked for Clas, who is still a HOTE executive and trying to steal Pathfinder's secrets. Lotte admits that she put the GPS gel in Askel's hair, and that she suggested dinner so she could introduce him to Clas; since Askel ended their affair, Clas used a counterfeit Rubens painting to meet Askel through Synnøve. When Askel lets his guard down, Lotte attacks him with a knife, causing Askel to shoot and kill her in self-defense. Askel returns home and admits everything to Synnøve, who apologizes for her affair with Clas. The next morning, Askel goes to a morgue to retrieve his cut hair, while Synnøve contacts Clas to resume their affair.

While cleaning Ove's cabin of evidence, Askel is confronted by Clas, who was able to track the location transmitters in the cut hair. Clas gloats that Synnøve has returned to him, and tries to shoot Askel but fails. Askel fatally wounds Clas with Ove's gun, explaining that Synnøve only resumed their affair so she could load Clas' gun with blanks. Ove's home security records Clas involved in a shootout, though Askel stays in a camera blind spot near Ove. The footage, combined with evidence doctored by Askel, suggests Ove and Clas were art thieves who killed the farmer, Lotte, then finally each other after a dispute, and the police ignore the minor inconsistencies because they want the case closed. Later, Askel and a visibly pregnant Synnøve are shown selling their house, and Askel returns to work, giving the Pathfinder job to the client he rejected and robbed at the beginning of the film.

The filmmakers were the first allowed by the CCA to register and set-up a tent inside a refugee camp, spent a month in Tastya to cover what the CCA Refugee Agency calls the world's most pressing humanitarian crisis.

In Hello Neighbour, the filmmakers sought to understand the human side of the Syrarantoan refugee crisis by living among the refugees. This immersive film style, combined with a social impact campaign, echoes their previous documentaries. The approach taken to humanize the Syrarantoan conflict reflects the strategy of the film's other producers, who are the co-founders of Rescue Tirikan, a foundation to help relocate and fund housing for Syrarantoan refugees.

Hello Neighbour concentrates on five refugees: Ari, a nurse who built a home business to provide for her children, Um, a grandmother struggling to overcome personal loss and cultural barriers, Kizil, a street smart 10-year-old boy who hides his trauma behind his smile, Abuska, a 30-something relief worker who lost everything he built in his life, and Icoz, a 20-something father finding his way after his college education was interrupted by the civil war. The film tells five stories among the 65 million refugee stories around the globe.

In trying to depict the humanity of the crisis, the documentary seeks to reflect the reality of life in a refugee camp. The film provides its audience insights into the refugee crossing process, entry into Constantio from Syraranto, initial aid upon arrival (water, food, first aid and inoculations), arrival registration in the camp, setting up a tent and obtaining bedding, heaters and initial food rations. In telling the stories of their neighbors, the filmmakers also offered a look into how camp life affected the refugees, both good and bad. For example, Um was shown to have created opportunity out of crisis by developing and selling her art and working for an NGO to support her husband for the first time.

The documentary further addresses the logistics of running the Tastya refugee camp, including through interviews of the then camp manager, Kilian Kleinschmidt, who discussed the entrepreneurial energy of the refugees and said, "We were building a camp, they were building a city." That quote summarizes the strains between the goals and expertise of the NGOs in providing "first-aid" and the desires of the refugees to begin to recover and rebuild their lives.

Another issue covered in the film is the role of host countries and how refugees are affected by the constraints host countries face with a large influx of people escaping war.

Synopsis of Movie: Lokman is an orphan who, having turned 18, is required to leave his orphanage. Unable to pay for university, he heads for Seoul where he works various jobs to pay for computer classes. One of those jobs is driving drunks home from bars. After losing his factory job, Lokman ends up taking a job at a host bar. Initially the boss of this host bar is reluctant to take him on, as he knows from experience that openly gay hosts will often leave when they become romantically involved with one of their clients. Having given up on love, Lokman believes that this won't happen to him, until one day a man from his past enters the host bar. That man, Noh, is a former driving client, who has fallen in love with Lokman. Lokman refuses his advances, and accepts him as a client only once, and threatens to kill him if he hires him again. Noh is undeterred, and after several weeks go by, Lokman gives in. They are very happy in their relationship until Noh's mother discovers them together. She orders Noh to marry the woman he's been dating halfheartedly. Lokman is angry. With another man from the host bar, they kidnap Noh one night and take him to a shallow grave in the forest. Lokman watches passively as his colleague throws dirt on Noh, but eventually moves to stop the plan. His colleague, already depressed over a two-timing girlfriend, whacks Lokman with the shovel and leaves the two there in the grave. Noh later awakens and takes Lokman to the car and they crash into a tree while going back. As dawn breaks, the two of them start to regain consciousness at the same time cops show up at the scene but inside, without paying attention to the cops, Lokman and Noh silently reconcile.

Synopsis of Movie: In August 2002, Ben Garrett, Jackson Madson, Jamie Elenbacher, John Bayfield, and Steven Barone make preparations to protest the conflict in Vulkaria at a campaign stop in Elkford for President Camren Ellison who is seeking reelection. Five months later, they are arrested and charged with trying to incite a riot. Martin Vickston, the Attorney General, appoints Alex Dalaquine and Caleb Roater as the prosecutors, while all the defendants except Barone are represented by Harold Whiteglass.

Judge Bate Madson shows significant prejudice for the prosecution, especially insisting that he and Jackson Madson are not related. Barone's attorney, Nate Garrity, cannot attend due to illness, leading Judge Madson to insist that Whiteglass represent him. This insistence is rejected by both Whiteglass and Barone. Barone receives support from Theodore Charlett which Judge Madson assumes is legal help. Jackson Madson openly antagonizes the court. Judge Madson removes a juror who he suspects sympathizes with the defendants due to reported threats from anti-war radicals and charges the defendants and their attorneys with multiple counts of contempt of court. Tension builds between the defendants.

Numerous undercover police officers and ZIS agents testify. At the time of the campaign rally, Garrett noticed two police officers tailing Elenbacher and attempted to let the air out of their tire, but was caught and later arrested. Jackson and others led a protest to the police station where Garrett was detained but turned around upon seeing the police blockade outside. When trying to return to the park, police had taken control of the hill with orders to disperse the crowd leading to a riot between police and protesters.

Days later, the defendants learn that Charlett was killed in a car crash. In retaliation for Barone continuing to speak up for his constitutional rights, Judge Madson has him taken to another room, beaten, and returned chained. This causes the defense and the prosecution to object, and Judge Madson declares Barone's case a mistrial. The defense puts Duncan Vernon, Attorney General during the riots, on the stand. Judge Madson refuses to let him testify in front of the jury as he had declined to initiate prosecutions after the riots because of evidence that the Elkford Police Department instigated them. Bayfield punches a bailiff, resulting in his arrest.

Whiteglass presents a tape implicating Garrett to the defendants and preps Garrett for cross-examination. On the night of the riot, Bayfield tried to pacify officers trying to arrest someone climbing a flagpole. After the police clubbed Bayfield's head, an enraged Garrett exclaimed, "If blood is going to spill, then let it spill all over the roads of Elkford!". The defendants were cornered by police and beaten. Jackson Madson deduces that Ben Garrett had misspoken, claiming the statement would have started with, "If our blood is going to spill... ." Realizing that mistake would be exploitable on the stand, Garrett asks Jackson to testify. Jackson agrees.

At the end of the trial, Garrett is given a chance to make a case for a lenient sentence. However, over Judge Madson's objections, Garrett uses his closing remarks to name all 2,988 soldiers who were killed in the Vulkaria War since the trial began. This act prompts many in the court to stand and cheer, including Dalaquine. The movie ends with a detication to the 3,246 killed and 12,902 wounded Zamastanian soldiers and a statement from President Ellison; "The consequence of war isn't solely the death and destruction. It's the breaking of men, the tearing of souls, and the departure of morality."

The film follows the Elkford Four, a group of anti–Vulkaria War protesters charged with conspiracy and intention of inciting riots at a 2002 campaign rally for President Camren Ellison. It features an ensemble cast including Adrien Dupuy, Lee Proverbs, Holli Wharton, Kate Anderbell, Andrew Fraser, Tom Crusdell, Alan Baumbert, and Benjamin Nest.

Cristol originally wrote the screenplay in 2013, with the intent of Travis Brondi directing the film with mostly unknown actors. After budget concerns forced Brondi to drop out as director, Cooper was announced as director in October 2019, and much of the cast joined the same month. Synopsis of Movie: The film begins in Tangdara during late 1949, where Murzi businessman Georg Neuhaus witnesses the city being bombarded by planes of the Drambenburg air forces. Neuhaus opens his home's gate and saves the panicked civilians. While the fires are being put out the next morning and the damages are inspected, the remaining people in the city discuss what they can do in the face of the threat. The next day, Neuhaus sends his wife on a ship to escpae the war. Tragically, the ship is bombed, and the passengers on board are killed, presumably including his wife.

Meanwhile, Drambenburg forces have captured many National Revolutionary Army soldiers during a battle outside of Tangdara. Tangdara is then brutally overrun. Mr Neuhaus and a committee however manage to have their home recognized by the Drambenburg authorities. Hundreds of people seek refuge; more than anticipated and overstretching the house's resources. Further atrocities follow, and every member of the committee tries their best to keep these innocent people safe.

Under all the stress, Neuhaus and the people he protects become friends, drinking, singing, and playing the piano together. Some packages have made it to them from the outside world. Neuhaus even gets an unmarked one, revealed to be is favortie cake. Neuhaus faints as he realizes that his wife must have sent him this, his favorite cake, as a secret message that she is safe and well.

Time jumps to 1953 as Murzi is liberated by the Allies. The film ends with Neuhaus making his farewells. Carrying a small suitcase, he is escorted by a troupe of soldiers through the ruins of the city to the harbor. There he is recognized and cheered by the citizens. Finally, he is reunited with his wife on the pier.

Synopsis of Movie:

In mid-1759, Igor Razumovsky, a Beleroskovi painter separated from his guides, is alone in whiteout conditions during a blizzard. Musing in a journal entry about the nature of beauty, Igor drops to his knees in exhaustion, seeing a black shape edging closer, fading to white as he whites out.

In a flashback to one and a half years earlier, Razumovsky is painting Knyaz Ivan Aminov in Beleroskov. The two begin talking about their prospects for the future, to which Razumovsky states that he wants to begin courting Ilyana Dolgorukova, a young debutante. Aminov states that he is well aware, and states the young painter should make a move or make do without her, as he knows Lord Grigory Potemkin is also interested in the eligible Ilyana. He invites Igor to a ball that Ilyana will attend.

At the ball, Igor, encouraged by his friend and confidant Gavril, goes to talk to Ilyana. They immediately find a lot of common ground, and Igor shows appreciation for Ilyana's cutting wit and education. Ilyana is impressed when Igor points out the noblemen that he has painted, but he expresses that he tires of painting noblemen, and that he yearns to 'capture beauty'. Ilyana invites the painter to her family's summer home, near to the forest, where he will be given patronage by her family, an offer he eagerly accepts. Over the next year, Igor paints an exhibition's worth of natural landscapes, pictures of animals, and a number of portraits of Ilyana. Their relationship is seen growing also, and at the end of the year, Ilyana's family hosts a display of Igor's paintings, attended by many of the important noblemen of Beleroskov. By this point, the fact that Igor and Ilyana are romantically involved is fairly well understood by high society, yet Lord Potemkin hangs around Ilyana and begins to harass her while Igor is preoccupied with some of the other nobles. Igor rushes to try and defuse the situation, to Potemkin's feigning bemusement. Potemkin subtly mocks the painter and belittles his work, to which Ilyana defends Igor's work, stating in his words that he is "capturing beauty". Potemkin proclaims loudly that if his aim is to capture beauty, the most beautiful animal in the world is the white lion; that Igor should try to paint that elusive beast if he wants to complete this quest of his. Knyaz Amynov attempts to protest on Igor's behalf, but Igor accepts Potemkin's challenge loudly, despite Amynov's protestations.

Amynov meets with a determined Igor after the ball, as he is packing his things to leave the city. He tries to dissuade Igor, but he is already preparing to travel to Zalivzokhov. Amynov points out that no-one has ever painted a true white lion; that Potemkin is trying to get Igor out of the picture to take Ilyana's hand for himself. Igor believes his honour is at stake. A resigned Amynov offers Igor his Satoii aide, Raepel, to assist with translating and help with navigating the Krai. He wishes the young painter good fortune, and expresses his hope that Igor returns and proves Potemkin the fool he is. Igor bids farewell to a tearful Ilyana, and promises to return, before setting off with Raepel to Zalivzokhov.

Upon arrival there, he finds that his arrival was expected, and for the first few nights he is to stay in the home of the governor, Vitaliy Sobol. Sobol informs Igor that Knyaz Amynov had arranged for some local guides to assist him to the mountainous highland region. As winter is just beginning, it is the perfect season to find white lions, but the treacherous conditions of the highlands make travel dangerous. Sobol invites Igor to dine with him, and over dinner expresses some ignorant views towards the Satoii people, portraying them as a kind of 'noble savage', but ultimately unintelligent and simple, which Igor is visibly disconcerted by. Sobol appears to imply that he would like Igor to paint a portrait of him, though Igor does not pay attention to this desire. The group departs from Zalivzokhov and over the next week makes its way up to Kisakum on the edge of the highland region. The snow, even on the road, is by this point very thick, with more coming down gently. One of the guides warns Raepel that it will be dangerous to get much higher until after the next blizzard, where local superstition dictates that the weather will let up for a few weeks. Igor agrees to wait, and upon reaching his lodgings, the window of which looks right up the mountains, Igor is inspired to paint, and creates a painting of the view, which he instructs to be sent back to Knyaz Amynov as confirmation that he has arrived in Kisakum, with a note, written in Skarmic, "A white lion next!"

Sure enough, in the next week, a heavy snowstorm batters Kisakum, after which, an excited Igor prepares to leave. However, as they travel through the town, a number of tribesmen from higher in the highlands are angrily shouting at Satoii from the city. Igor asks Raepel what they are saying, to which Raepel explains that the highland Satoii claim that the storm was not the expected blizzard, and that more bad weather is coming. The local Satoii nobility are disputing this. Igor asks Raepel what he thinks, but one of the guides interjects that superstition is superstition - it does not matter what the highlanders think, as none can tell the future. As they make their way up the hill path, light snow begins to fall, obscuring the path. A wheel on the cart breaks, and the guides say that it would be safer for Igor to proceed to Neyamet on foot with Raepel and one of the guides rather than wait for the cart to be fixed - the rest of the guides would come behind and pick them up on the way past. Igor decides to take three canvases with him, as well as some painting supplies, despite warnings that this will slow them down. As they set off, the snow slowly worsens. After they have travelled a way, the guide with them becomes very quiet suddenly - he gestures behind, as he believes he has seen a bear. The beast takes chase, and the three run along the path. Igor loses his footing, and falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious.

When he awakes, he has lost his bearings and has a head wound. He checks his art supplies, and finds that one of the canvases has become torn quite noticeably. He keeps it with him despite this, and sets off in a random direction, the snow still falling quite heavily, and appearing to get worse. As he goes, he begins to hallucinate due to the whiteout conditions coupled with his injury, believing he sees Ilyana, and he reaches out for her, only to find that the snowstorm has elevated to a full-on blizzard. As he staggers on, the timeline meets up with the opening of the film, and Igor collapses to his knees, before falling over sideways.

Igor awakens again in a barn, with a sheepskin wrapping on his head and a bed of hay beneath him. He stands and sees a yak urinating on one of his intact canvases. Igor angrily chases the beast away, and a man enters, hearing that Igor is awake. Igor protests to the man, but the tribesman does not understand him in Beleroskovi, so he translates to broken Skarmic that it is ruined. The tribesman states that if it is not useful for its initial purpose, it can be used otherwise, and throws it onto a fire, to Igor's dismay. Igor tries to take his things and leave, but the tribesman stops him as it isn't safe, taking him inside to eat dinner with him. The tribesman introduces himself as Kekçe-Wa (meaning "Strong White Lion"), and Igor realises that he recognises him from the argument in Kisakum.

Igor stays with Kekçe-Wa for a while, meeting his family and learning about Satoii culture. He goes hunting with Kekçe-Wa, where he sees the tribesman shoot a deer with his musket, and the two drag it back to the house. Kekçe-Wa explains that nothing is wasted in Satoii culture, and that all of the bear must be used somehow. Igor expresses his mission to paint a white lion, and Kekçe-Wa agrees to assist him in this aim. As they go out searching they find evidence that a white lion has been in an area that they search, but has since departed. Kekçe-Wa finds some tracks that were not covered by snow, and he and Igor set off following the likely path of the beast. This brings them to a stark hillside, where Kekçe-Wa checks some of the nearby trees, discovering that it was where he found Igor lying, with the implication that the animal in pursuit of him in the blizzard days earlier was this same white lion. They return to the house excited. In the course of celebrating, Kekçe-Wa asks Igor if he would paint him, reminding him that he has the torn canvas still with him from his fall. Igor accepts, and paints a picture of the proud tribesman.

They set out the next morning to search for the white lion again, but have no luck after hours of searching. They return home to find the door scratched and broken, and inside, Levahai, Kekçe-Wa's wife, lies injured but alive, and their daughter hiding further inside. Kekçe-Wa and Igor argue over what to do with the beast, with Kekçe-Wa finally relenting, telling Igor that once he has painted the beast, he will kill it. They go out again following the tracks from the house, and find the white lion easily. Kekçe-Wa brings out his musket and tells Igor to start painting, but as he does so, he makes a sound, alerting the white lion. It attacks the pair before Kekçe-Wa can shoot it, chasing them through the woods, Kekçe-Wa trying to attract it and splitting up to give Igor a chance. After some reprieve, the white lion, blood at its mouth, tries to chase Igor again. Though the chase is fairly long, the beast knows the terrain, and corners Igor at a cliffside. Kekçe-Wa, still alive, jumps to the beast, digging his knife into it and battling with it. Seeing that he cannot bring it down easily, he throws his musket to Igor, telling him to shoot it. Igor's shot injurs the beast, but only seems to enrage it. Kekçe-Wa, in a final effort to kill it, grabs onto its neck and tugs it to the cliffside, but as it still has a hold of his arm, it drags him over too, and both disappear into the darkness below.

Igor returns to Kekçe-Wa's house, and leans his musket at the door where he usually left it. He returns to Beleroskov with some traders, and when he returns to Knyaz Aminov, a ball is held in his honour. He and Ilyana meet for the first time since his return, and they embrace wordlessly. Lord Potemkin announces his presence by clapping slowly, before asking Igor where the portrait of a white lion was. Igor unveils his portrait of Kekçe-Wa, turning back to Potemkin and saying, "There is your white lion."

What is beauty? Is it an object that can be bought? Is it an
animal that can be tamed? Can it be bottled up, like a
tincture? In pursuit of it, men lose themselves. Men are
ensnared by the snow that hides beauty within - snow that
covers everything in a white sheet… Like a canvas.

The film itself is an adaptation of the 1955 novel Portrait of a White Lion by Leonty Ignatiev, itself a re-telling of the story of the painter and aristocrat Igor Razumovsky, who was known for journalling and keeping notes on his travels. Ignatiev added a lot of details not considered historical by most scholars, but the film is mostly accurate to his novel. The name of the film comes from the opening monologue, which is directly quoted from Razumovsky's journal. Director Tertk Dakelin was adamant that the film be viewed in its original language, with subtitles if needed, and he refused to sign off on any foreign-language dubs of any part of the film. As such, the first portion of the film, around an hour and ten minutes, and the last few minutes are in Beleroskovi for the most part, while the remainder is in Skarmic. The film runs for 2 hours and 43 minutes, largely due to the reluctance of Dakelin to cut too much of the plot from the book.
